Ok. So on Fanfiction.net… can we have a way to rate the overall stories, and the chapters? Like… a 5 star rating like what you see on Amazon and Netflix… then you can look at the ratings for a story, and sort by “revelance” (or how good the ratings on a story are) That’d be great!!! That would help me a lot on whether on not I want to spend my time reading a fic.!!! Thanks for reading this!! I hope we can start rating stories and chapters soon!!! :-)

Narisse, your idea is great. It would be really useful if we could rate stories, specially in the most popular categories. When there are a thousand fics, is hard to find a criterion to start to read.

I disagree based on small-fandom experiences. It can be too easy for people to unfairly rate a story based on stars, and in small fandoms this can badly skew results. Say if three people rate and one person gives an unfair rating, that can hurt the author. In amateur fanfic I think it’s better to leave to reader choices and reviews rather than have a quick-and-easy popularity contest.

Well… That’s true… but it’s easier to tell whether or not it’s good.. and you can always check the number of ratings, which will help tell you whether it’s skewed or not… And you can read some of the review + the ratings, and the two combined will give you a better idea as to whether it is a good fic. or not. So, despite the few negatives, it’s still worth the rating system!!

@ The post above mine… I don’t believe it will be easier to tell whether a story is good or not. Unlike Amazon and Netflex most of the people rating the products and the movies aren’t making and selling the product themselves. There is also the problem with the fact younger and less mature members will rate things based on like and dislike and since they mostly read what they like a poorly written story may have dozens of five star ratings causing it to have a rating above four simply because the reader likes the pairing, or some other silly thing.

I’ve unfortunately seen how well the rating system works over at quizella. I doubt I’ve seen a story that is under the rating of four. On top of this the rating system would be abused by cliques. I’ve seen some of the younger writers gather in mass and review people’s stories without really reading them just so said person would review their story. If we had a star rating they would be rating any and story with a five in hopes that someone else will give them a five too. Not to mention they wouldn’t be rating on quality but whether or not they liked a fanfic. I critique fanfic too and there have been a few times I’ve had some writers threaten to gang up on me with their friends so it would be a way to revenge flame without leaving a review.

Well… can’t you report the people threatening you? (that is one form of black mail– even if to a small degree) And that is a good point… but it quite annoying to have to constantly sort through junk to find GOOD fanfics…
Also, you can often tell from the reviews the people rating leave, as whether or not they are GIVING a good insight on the story. Maybe if it was REQUIRED to leave a review if you rated a story… if it’s something simple, with un-capitalized words, brief, and maybe a few misspelled words, then it is probably not a trust-worthy review. I have TRIED using reviews to figure out if a fanfic is good or not… they are usually not very insightful, unfortunately.
I still like the idea of rating stories… although there are also many disadvantages.

what i mean by “reporting” is, can’t you report them to the people who run fanfiction? Then they could be suspended from the sight…

Heh, I’ve occasionally looked for something like this from you guys. It’s nice to see it become a reality. ^.^

(Side Question: I had asked before about “Combining” FictionPress and FanFiction Accounts. Is this a thing that may happen at some point? Or is it already there and I have missed it? The feature I’ve seen looks to create a “New” account at the sister site using the other site’s credentials.)

I have always wondered, who *are* you? I mean, who runs FanFiction? It’s been such a big part of my life for so many years, but I’ve never seen any information about who it is who runs the site. Whoever you are, I’d like to just say “Thank you!” for all the work you’ve done to make this site so amazing.

To agree w/ jessicakreaby, THANK YOU! I just made an account a month or so ago, and have started a story of my own, w/ 8 chapters so far! If your site hadn’t been here, I probably would have just typed a chapter or so and deleted it, but now I have a place to put it and get feedback. Thank you, I appreciate the chance to post it to other people, and if you want to look at it, I’ll be using my Pen Name for this comment! (:D)

This so epic! I’ve been on FF for years, and have hardly ever seen any sort of improvements (except for the v2 platform thing). And over the years, I’ve always wished FF could change a bit, maybe look more modern (because you have to admit, the site looks kind of unappealing) and add some featured I would love to have, like, I dunno, a chatbox for each fandom and ratings for stories and the betareading section could be improved (like people who need betareaders could make a profile of their own too) and collaborations could have both the authors’ names next to the fanfic and you can gift fanfictions to other users and have tags and type your story on the site instead of uploading it and have color and fonts (at least for profiles) and seriously I could go on and on. O.o I know I should just email, but I’m scared my ideas could be crappy.

I also have some stuff I wish you guys could change, like I wish they site would allow us to have links in our profiles again. :( And for Guest reviewers, please allow them to be able to have usernames instead of labeling each and everyone of them as ‘Guest’. Because I’ve actually gotten to know some of them, and my little sister is a Guest reviewer too, so how would I know who is who? Also, the Image Manager section could be improved. Not to mention it would be nice if users got a warning before their stories are removed because I’m heard some complaints about this…

And just like the above, I’ve always wondered who actually runs FanFiction and Fictionpress? Recently, I heard the sites got new admins which is why there are so many changes (and the site is finally getting an actual personality). It would also be nice if you guys got a Facebook page because I’m not allowed to go on Twitter.

Anyway, you people are AWESOME and continue doing the work I’m seeing you doing! ;) Like is said so often in reviews, keep it up and update soon! (Oh this is so long.)

Did you know your Twitter feeds not working?

Anyway, as to the guys asking who owns FFN I suggest Googling it and clicking on the Wiki link like every normal person.

And I also like the rating idea. It could be like on Ficwad.

Also, please stop deleting stuff without looking! Some of the story’s I’ve noticed gone are great and not in breach of TOS anyway, while others that are still great get deleted too for an infringement they might not be aware of. If you have a problem with a story you should take the time (which we authors do to write for your site) to discus the matter with us. Plus your ‘rules’ are so loose when it comes to ratings its near criminal. M (16+) so how can you say not too much violence? Have you not watched or read hardly any of the fandoms your site caters for? Most of which isn’t even rated that high and has visual violence!

    07/08/2012 at 5:06 pm

This is a great idea. :) Also, I have to respectfully disagree with the comment that said the site isn’t modern enough or whatever. I think FFN looks good as it is; clean and easy on the eyes.

    • Silverstream

      07/17/2012 at 8:07 pm

Completely agree with DC111. I’m not saying that we cannot add improvements, it’s just that the site is perfect the way it is. I honestly think that adding ratings for stories would be great- to know if the story is worthwhile, but if a writer is writing to get better and their ratings are terrible…well, it’s not really great for your self esteem. I started writing because it helped me control my emotions a bit better, and if someone gives me one star out of five, it’ll be like crushing the feelings and the heart I had the courage to type up. Most of my stories are actually based on things that I have been through in the past. I’m not saying that we should not critique each other, I just think that rating a story badly is like leaving mean review.
Anyways, I really love fan-fiction, and I would like to thank whoever runs it. You don’t know how much this site means to me :D

Are you considering adding NC-17, R &/or X ratings for authors to use on their stories? I know many authors have moved to other sites because of your recent purge. I think it’s shame that so many great authors and stories are now scattered around the internet.

It would be nice to see new ratings added as part of this sudden move to upgrade the application.

    • yemi hikari

      07/20/2012 at 9:30 pm

Probably not. The rating has been gone for ten years now because a kid got a hold of NC-17 material and their parent found out. There are actual laws in place that say you can’t provide this material to minors. While you can card at a game shop you can’t check to see if people are giving you their real birth date on the net for sites like this.

I love the idea of rating stories as well. That way it wouldn’t be nearly as difficult to rummage through the not-so-good stories to find the high-quality ones.

Another idea is to have a ‘warning’ list. A story can be rated T or M for many reasons, and I find having to read the warnings in a summary is annoying and distracts me from getting to know the story in the first place. If there could be checked labels for what a story is rated T or M for (violence/gore/torture, character death, rape, strong language, etc etc), it would be very helpful so the author wouldn’t be bogged down by having to constantly give out their own warnings. Just an idea.

      07/12/2012 at 7:03 pm

Yes, I like the warning label idea!!! I know on one of my own fic.s I’m going the “warning” in the description… and it would be much better to have a label to put it in!! Thanks for supporting my idea as well ^-^

      07/20/2012 at 9:35 pm

I’ve seen how the rating system on quizella works. It will turn into a popularity contest rather then a reflection of quality.

While that would be nice I have one story which I couldn’t reveal why it was rated the particular rating as it would have given away the plot. I had to warn as the subject matter cropped up in the story.

  14. Lisa

    07/08/2012 at 8:25 pm

yeah I agree I would like people to have warnings before there stories are removed, that way they can warn everyone else. Honestly I don’t understand why you guys are removing stories. The point of fanfiction is to allow us to…how you guys put it “unleash our imagination” well you aren’t allowing author’s to do that, in fact you are limiting it, a lot of people, and author’s I have grown close to over the years have moved away from Fan Fiction and with their stories as well. I been a part of Fan Fiction since I was in 8th grade…I’m a Grad School Student now in a University. So I been with FanFiction for a long-long-long time. Please. I beg of you do not delete any more stories, there were a lot of stories I have been reading, that have almost finished that ended up being taken down either from the site or from the author’s fear of it being removed….please stop this. I don’t care who runs this site, honestly I don’t. I just want to whoever is running this site to take in consideration the authors. Why not have a boundary…if the story is rated M, or MA then a person under the age of 16 or 18 can not be allowed access to that story? that sounds fair doesn’t? Also I back in the guidelines i read “Intended for general audience 5 years and older. Content should be free of any coarse language, violence, and adult themes. uitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.” and so…back when I first joined Fanfiction a person under the age of 16 was not allowed to join fanfiction…so now 5,9, and 13 years can join? It’s not fair that you guys are doing this to the people who have been with FanFiction for such a long time, and then you spring this on them. I say bring back the old rules where 5,9, 13 year olds are not allowed to join so that way we can write our stories the way we want…or like I have suggested if you are allowing those age groups to join then restrict access to M and MA stories from them until they reach the proper age.

    • Silverstream

      07/17/2012 at 8:18 pm

I agree with Lisa. It is not fair to be taking down stories after the author has put so much time and love into them. M rated stories should be restricted if needed but not taken down. No matter what the story is about, it is surely dear to the author. As Lisa stated, we are here to “unleash our imagination”, no matter what our imagination conjures up.
But I disagree with the statement that young children should not be allowed to join. There can be a age restriction (13+, 14+, etc.) but people over thirteen are the young writers that are using this site to improve, and you shouldn’t take that away from them.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you take my view into consideration :)

      • yemi hikari

        07/20/2012 at 9:58 pm

It’s not the M rated stories that contain only M rated material that is the problem, but the M rated stories that contain MA material. Somewhere I read about a gaming company that got in trouble for trying to get an MA game a lower rating just so they could sell it to minors. This site can’t verify people’s age like a game store can so they can still get into legal trouble for MA content as can the person posting it.

That also said, there is more to writing then doing whatever the imagination conjures up. With that logic a person should be able to slap words down and it be not open for critique.

    • yemi hikari

      07/20/2012 at 9:50 pm

I don’t like it when people don’t understand the meaning of the sites motto. To “unleash your imagination” doesn’t mean “do whatever you want”. A good deal of the rules are there for legal reasons. For the ones that are not do not restrict a persons creativity but force the person to use their creativity in a more professional manner. As for the MA material… you do realize it is against the law to provide minors with that kind of material? Even if they implemented a age verification system they can’t check ids like game stores that sell MA material. And five and nine year olds aren’t supposed to have accounts on the site. You have to be thirteen or older.

      • Silverstream

        08/19/2012 at 11:44 pm

You’re right about the M and the MA story sentiment. But I disagree with the professional creativity sentiment. Who knows, maybe it’s just me, being young and foolish, but I think that our imaginations should be allowed to be expressed however we want, as long as it’s not in a violent or offensive way. And I think that stories with MA material (and I have come across quite a few) should be restricted, not taken down.

        10/27/2012 at 3:42 am

@ Silverstream – I think it is more along the lines of me having heard the argument from a few writers about how they should be allowed to use what ever grammar they want because grammar rules restrict their imagination. Rules actually don’t restrict imagination, they instead help in reigning in said imagination to make something worth while. It’s kind of like how I’ve also heard people say that their stories are ruined because they aren’t allowed to use copyrighted lyrics in them.

This is awesome! I agree with everything that has been said so far. So glad to see this happening! I think the feature I would absolutely love to see in the future is the disabling of the copy/paste function. With the rampant plagiarism that goes on these days, having this protection would really go a long way.

And of course, thank you guys for all your hard work! :)

i disagree on the copy paste, simply because i may really like a story and wish to read it at my leisure. i lack an apple device like an ipad or itouch/phone so i am unable to use the app that i have heard about that lets you do that. so yeah i say keep cut and paste. shame that people actually plagiarize on this site though

I know that I have been blamed of plagiarizing when I was simply re-vamping my own story :( I’m just glad to have my reviewers that stick up for me :D
If you could disable the copy/paste function, I think it would make everyone’s lives easier.
      Thank you :)

While I understand your reasons for wanting to disable the copy/paste ability on the site because of plagiarism I don’t agree with doing this as it restricts those who use the copy/paste feature for reasons that constitute fair use.

      • Fiona

        07/21/2012 at 8:20 am

Fair use? I don’t understand what that means, really. Mind explaining?

But I think disabling the copy/paste function is a great idea. Not only will it lessen the chances of plagiarism, but it’ll probably help keep people from leaving FP and moving to sites that don’t let you right click, like Wattpad or Inkpop. Because that’s seriously what I’m thinking of doing. A lot of my online friends are with me on this. Even though we’d like to stay on FP, we can’t risk having our work stolen and posted elsewhere/sold to people. It’s not right. And I dread the day someone comes to me and tell me they’ve seen my story on some other site.

And the whole fair use thing. Sorry, it just bugs me. Those words. But how in what way is copying someone’s work and posting it somewhere considered fair use? Sure you’re not making money, but it’s still someone else’s. Meaning the praises/insults/etc you receive truly belongs to them. I just don’t understand. And it bothers me. No one should have “their own” copy of a story. Unless you’ve asked the author specifically for THEM to send you the story and they’re cool with it, then it’s okay. But without the author’s awareness? Nope. Not fair.

      • MJ Watson

        07/22/2012 at 4:26 am

He/She doesn’t mean to publish someone else’s work, but to copy it to word etc. so that they can read it while offline. However, disabling copy/paste is a stupid idea anyway! There are programs that can copy multiple chapters in one go. So there’s no point! And if you disabled all of that, what is someone had lost all of their work because of computer failure, and the only copies are in FFN etc.? Then they can’t even retrieve their stories without spending hours copying.

Hi, this is indeed much better. And I myself have wondered who ran fanfiction.net all this time. Anyway, This website has provided me with great reading material and has made improved my writing skills rather dramatically. And has gotten me back to doing one of my favorite things , writing stories. So for that thank you.

I have noticed quite a few stories have been deleted recently. I am aware that this is the case because of inappropriate content in a great deal stories. And that I understand perfectly and agree with one-hundred percent. But, recently I was searching for a story I particularly liked, and to my dismay I found it was deleted, as well as the author. This concerned me because the story was not at all inappropriate, it was actually very PG in content.

Also, in the search in the selecting the characters option, could you make it so it only does stories with the one character by themselves and not just every story the character is in.

Those are pretty much my only concerns/suggestions, everything else is great and your improvements so far have been good. And I really enjoy using you website and appreciate the work that’s put into it to make it as great as it is.
    Thank you

I think it’s great that this site will be participating in networking like this. Having the updates listed on the homepage is great, but being able to get more details, and be able to give feedback in a more interactive setting will also be great improvements

I also am looking forward to a better troubleshooting in result of this. Being able to see the questions fellow writers will ask, and if their problems are fixed, that saves me from asking the same questions! I think that will be both a relief for not only myself, but for your end as well. It also helps me feel as if my question is noticed; sending in the email from the site never assured me if it was acknowledged or not.

Great job you’re doing so far on here! I’ll be keeping track of this blog, that’s for sure :)

I have been a writer on your site for an awhile. I love it, but I hate the changes. Stop trying to take away all the M rated fics, writers do their best to make these stories and you’re telling them that their hard work is not good enough. It’s not asking much for you guys just to please back off a little bite. A lot of the fics I like are M rated, and it’s the job of the adult to make sure that their kid isn’t reading the M rated stuff, so please don’t take it out on us.

    • yemi hikari

      07/20/2012 at 10:06 pm

If a fanfic contains M rated material and not MA material it shouldn’t be deleted. People don’t like finding MA material in a fic that is supposed to be M rated. Not to mention a parent who has given their kid permission to read M rated stuff shouldn’t have to worry about them finding MA material simply because someone lable an MA fanfic as an M rating. And yes… parents have a right to complain about such material because it is MA not M.

I think the one thing FF should improve on is the contrast Light/dark thing. I love the fact that you could do it while reading stories but wouldn’t it be better to have the same thing when you’re browsing an authors profile and such? I have many late nights reading on FF and when I finish a story and go back to the author’s page, my eyes get murdered… It’s just a thought.
An app would be great too…. Not the mobile version, like an actual app. Where you can update your stories and such on your phone. I update from my phone sometimes already, but it’s a bit tricky.
well… yup that’s it. I love FF too much already, these are just suggestions:)

There are 2 things that I just don’t understand why they are there, both of them are guidelines you put that I was hoping you could explain why they were put there in the first place
    1) Why no interactive fiction?
    2) Why no script format?
I just can’t see what purpose these serve, I was hoping you could shed some light on them

      1. The same reason “second person” and “non-historical, non fictional characters” aren’t allowed. They don’t want the younger readers self inserting themselves into certain stories.
      2. Quality control. Chat format and script format are to similar to each other, a good deal of the script format doesn’t even follow the rules for writing script and many writers use it as a lazy way to write a story and get stories out fast. No, it isn’t fair to the people who use it properly, but you can write a script format as a regular story easily. Not to mention you can add more to it. Plus, people argue whether you can count script format as a story because a script is supposed to be visually adapted while the regular stories are able to stand on their own.

Again – PLEASE get rid of the auto check marks in the review section. They are not helpful but are causing headaches. I’m now following all of my favorites which I didn’t want to do… I get notices on both… I’m following authors I didn’t want to follow and either I get to waste time fixing something you caused or you can simply remove the darn check marks… NO ONE wants them.

Hi! I love Fanfiction and I’m a reader and author on the site. I was wondering if there could be an option, as a reader, to seperate the reviews of a story by chapters. It’s small, I know, but I’d like to see reviews for a certain chapter without search through 20 pages or so. Thanks for working hard to make Fanfiction and Fictionpress such great sites!

You already can do this. Check the “chapter filter” option on the review page.

Sorry. I should have been more specific. I meant on the mobile site. Is there a chapter filter on there? I may have overlooked it. ^_^’

How about changing the site back to how it looked before you did all this? It looks ugly. I don’t like the pictures next to the story title or the way the review box looks now, and I am actually getting headaches from reading stories now.

I think the review pop-up box was best. This new one is shoddy and reminds me of all those primitive sites.

Its easy, just click on your messages and it says delete in blue on each one. Happy deleting. Unless they’ve changed it since yesterday lol!

Just wondering if you would be able to add a co-author option on to stories, that would also link to the other author’s profile.

I would LOVE that as I have a story I have co-authored with someone… or a series that is. And I’m thinking of doing some with my brother.

Are storymarks ever returning? I loved the option of creating a list of “to read.” Although there was a MAJOR glitch where sometimes they would all just disappear unexpectedly. I started to keep a paper list where I jotted them down. But having the storymark list, where you could just click and go to the story, was really great.

How about changing your slogan from “Unleash your imagination to “check your imagination at the door and post what we tell you to.”

Hello…I would like to bring to attention something i’m sure people moan about. But i have a Legitimate complaint. The Critic’s Union is a bunch of flaming troll’s. If they did what they say they do. It would be just fine. But they are going after ANY m rated story not just Porn stories.

Hear you there. I have seen at least 20 stories that had no porn in them, nor are were they plagiarized that they attacked. Several were just because they were bad grammer (English wasnt their first language) and now they have left the site as well. If you watch their board you will see. Reported, reported and reported, but they never leave a review. Something has to be done about them or else they are going to lose more good authors and i would hate to see some like Ror, Radaslab and robst be run off or just leave.

I would love it if you would actually get programs that worked or had someone going thru each category to weed out the people that are breaking the rules by doing such things as using real people’s names in stories (happens a lot in the TV show section), asking for characters in a story instead of actually writing the story (again, in the TV Show section), and the stories that are still being posted in script format.

You go on and on and on and on about people violating the M rating and uploading material that is actually MA, but at the same time they are the LEAST amount of the offenders on the site. Bad grammar, massive spelling errors, clear site violations, etc are rampant on the site and reports are pretty much ignored.

Just allow the MA stuff. Put in some sort of filter for it if you’d like, but honestly, very few ‘kids’ come onto the site and the stories that are of a more MA rating wouldn’t interest them in the first place. I rarely ever see a story that truly fits a K rating unless it is just pure, utter sap without any sort of substance. Most of them should be at LEAST a K+.

Honestly, kids can see and hear worse on television anymore than they’ll actually get on here and read. At the same time, by not focusing on the people that are violating Your Own Site Guidelines in larger ways, you’re losing some of the best authors that you have because they are choosing to not belong to a place where larger things are overlooked in favor of picking on the few.

I get that you guys have a big job, but sometimes it’s better to lighten up in some areas to keep the quality and tighten up in others to improve the overall quality. I would gladly trade Quality over Quantity any day.

Contrary to what you say, quite a few kids do come on this site. And contrary to what you say, kids are already getting their hands on the M rated material despite the fact their parents wouldn’t be pleased with this. People have also found that the best way to report the mass amount of rule breaking fanfics and to get the site admins to deal with them is to send in a massive list.

Hey, you know what FFN and FPC users should be able to do? Remove all reviews, not just Anon ones. I find some really mean, and not just critical, reviews that cannot be removed because they were posted by an actual user. Yes, I know actual users can be banned, but that takes time. Removing reviews is immediate.

It’s very easy. You click log in, it prompts you to create an account and set up a screen name, and it sends you a verification e mail and you create your profile and you can start writing and reviewing.
