7/8 Status Update 2

08 Jul

We just pushed out a large update which fixes a few bugs and preps the site for upcoming upgrades.

Updates

  1. Reverted guest review system to previous setup where one can enter a name instead of using the default “Guest” name tag. Please note authors should not trust the name tag from guest reviews since everything in a guest review is from an unverified source.
  2. Today’s update included tremendous amount of changes under-the-hood and if you see a broken link somewhere, please notify us immediately.

Bugs fixed

  1. Forum alert un-subscribe links in email alerts.
  2. Community links in community alerts.

Unfortunately the review remains, but you can block them from reviewing again, it’s not perfect but better than nothing. There is also an option of reporting the abusive review to the Mods, but as you have found out the Mods don’t always respond very well.

I think they should let you remove your own signed reviews because mistakes can easily happen.

Yeah, I’ve yet to receive any notification from the MOD’s and therefore dont see the point in bothering to report the abuse, even though I did TWICE!! I shouldn’t have to have those reviews out thee for others to read. They need to be removed. Period!

…Am I the only one who has at least one review missing? One of my newer fics says that there are twenty-seven reviews, but when I go to look at them by chapter I count Twenty-EIGHT Where is my last review?

You say that a guest review is untrustworthy and unverified, yet signed in users of Fanfiction can spout as much rubbish and rude comments as an unverified user yet you cannot delete a signed in review like you can with an guest one and they do it knowing that you can’t. I think you need to rethink the reviewing system.

I second this. I’ve been complaining alot about the reviewing system as well. It doesn’t take long for a user to just sign-up and leave trolling signed comments. At least you can remove guest’s ones…

I really don’t understand why we can’t go back to being able to choose to block anonymous reviews. It’s now so much more easier for flamers to get away with harassment because authors can’t block them, because they had to be signed in to review.

I agree. I understand that you can delete the anon reviews or moderate them and prevent them from being published but what if the writers don’t want to read the flames at all? There’s nothing worse then opening your email to find anon hate. It wouldn’t stop it all together but it would cut down on it. The flamers have a lot more protection than the writers which is pretty sad.

I second that. I’m being targeted by very deranged people who are openly insulting me rudely because they don’t like my fics. And those SOBs don’t sign in, they just leave a GUEST review and get away with murder!! SOMETHING must be done about this! I want to be able to BLOCK GUEST REVIEWS AGAIN!!!!

Some of us have been asking that question for a while now and Xing still hasn’t given us the courtesy of a reply, so here’s hoping you’ll get the answer to your question. So how about it Xing, do you have an answer for us or are you going to ignore us again.

    • ~Cherry!~

      09/09/2012 at 4:36 am

Once in a blue moon does Xing reply as comments. I don’t think he even reads them which leaves me to wonder why does he allow comments at all? Why not just post updates if you don’t reply?

      • Graham King

        09/09/2012 at 4:51 am

I’ve seen Xing reply to questions very quickly when it suits, that’s what annoys me most. Even if it was just a message to say ‘sorry we can’t do anything at the moment.’ or ‘We’re looking into that for future updates.’ would be appreciated, the fact that we are ignored shows a lack of courtesy.

        09/09/2012 at 11:03 am

Oops that’s what I meant. Once in a blue moon does he reply to comments which he chooses. He ignores 98% of them!

The sad thing is that FF.Net was one of the safest places to post your stories, between being able to block both anonymous reviews and even registered people who hassled you. Yeah there are ways around such safeguards, making more then one account for example, but overall it really cut way back on the hateful flames. But now FF.Net seems geared more to the flamers, even with the optional 36 hour wait for anonymous reviews to be posted, the author themselves still has to read the hate. And now a days, at least for me and I think for others, we really don’t need that kind of negativity.

So please give us back the ability to block anonymous reviews!

Doesn’t checking no in Moderate Guest Reviews in your Accounts settings have anonymous reviews disabled?

      • Graham King

        09/09/2012 at 11:30 am

There is no option to block anonymous reviews, only to moderate ‘guest’ reviews

      • Wispr

        09/09/2012 at 12:32 pm

Graham King is right and thus you still have to read the flame, or at least enough to recognize it as a flame. Thus as things stand its a flamers paradise here with how the new review system works in their favor… :(

I agree with that ff was a fun place and everyone got a long pretty well till some of the changes were made
ff needs to go back to what it use to be

      and we need more mods

ffn also needs do more about the flaming and bullieing going on.

I’m willing to help if I can. I’m sure a lot of people would be willing to help out if they needed more people for mods and other stuff.

I really wish they gave us the option to moderate signed reviews. I don’t want my readers who like my story to see that one flame from a signed reviewer. And I certainly don’t want to keep having to see/ be reminded of the flame when I go to read the new reviews. I also wished they would bring back the blocking of anonymous reviews, but still keep the moderate anonymous reviews feature. That way, people who want to completely block all anonymous reviews can, and those who don’t can still decide which guest reviews they want or disapprove of.

    • Wispr

      09/11/2012 at 5:20 am

I like you idea if they bring back allowing us to block anonymous reviews that we still have to ability moderate anonymous reviews. Sadly I’m really beginning to believe that FF.Net is leaning towards wanting to attract more flamers and such like minded people so I really doubt we’ll see any kind of going back to protecting the authors like before.

I realise this is an older thread, but my issue is relating to reviews.

I have just tried to leave a review on a story in my favourites list, but it was rejected because “someone else has already left this review. Please try again and be more descriptive or imaginative”. What????

If this is now the norm, it is completely rediculous. Most peole leave the same sort of review ‘thanks for the update’, ‘great chapter’, ‘loved it’ etc. Reviews are going to go through the floor if this is the case. Consequently, authors will not want to write if they get no reviews :(

    • ~Cherry!~

      09/30/2012 at 1:50 pm

I’ve never heard of that. Did you review the EXACT wordings of another? Or was the person who left the same review yourself but didn’t go through?
I think it is a bug because if it was an update we’d be told about it.

Agree with everyone so far about anon reviews. We need to go back to the option of being able to approve them (or better to not even allow them). In some cases it isn’t just one bad review or a flame, it can turn into bullying and harrassment, and there’s nothing the author can do to escape seeing them. In their email alerts as well as on the site. :(

Please, please, please bring back the option for having only signed reviews! I do not like not being able to communicate with the people who review my fics. I have found it also has kept them more accountable for what they are writing in their reviews. Other authors may not care, but I really aprieciated having that option. Having it removed from my profile without my consent really upset me. If you are going to allow anonymous reviews, please at least make them have a valid email address!

The guest reviews are pissing me off. They are just trolls trying to get you mad half the time, and it’s starting to work. I refuse to leave fanfiction and fiction press but there has to be a better way for the guest reviews. I don’t need to see “HATER” Each and every time I update or post a new story. I am about to call the cops.

      12/18/2012 at 11:07 am

I hate guest reviews too. Though, I don’t get many haters. Its annoying to get a review asking something from me and not being able to respond. Plus there are some seriously silly haters out there reviewing with hate just for hates sake. If they don’t like something WHY oh WHY do they keep reading? They keep going just to hate some more… most times showing that they aren’t even reading properly, or they expect the main plot to be obvious from the get go! I know I can moderate my guest reviews, which is nice, but forcing them to sign in so they can be reported would be very nice, thank you.

Love the site, by the way,

      Adam

@ Kirrie, as you can see many of us have already asked that question, what i want to know is why no one from the Mods is willing to join this discussion or even just tell us it can’t be sorted until the next upgrade, they seem to be able to answer others

When I found out about the new “review system” I immediately thought about the flames, that they would become a lot easier to be posted, and now I’m glad to know that at least it’s not only me who has been trying to get an explanation from the Mod over and over again, meeting complete silence as a response.

Funny enough, for us to post any comment on this very blog here we’re forced to identify ourselves! There is no “guest member” option, and I wonder why!

It’s a pity Fanficion net is adopting this policy – it’ll eventually send away many of its signed members; fanfiction writers who are exactly the responsible ones to bring others to access their website.

  22. speklez

    12/26/2012 at 12:53 pm

I can see this is an older posting but it is only very recently that I have begun having issues with ‘guests’ and each and every one of them is worst than the last and this is the only place I have found to, perhaps, maybe get a response. Now, I have extremely thick skin and it takes a lot to get under it, but some of the anon reviews I have been getting would make the Devil cry. I have tried reporting but am getting no response and there is no way to respond to the reviewer, signed or otherwise. I remember when they first started allowing guest reviews again and the reason they gave was people were complaining about the lack of reviews by readers that didn’t have an account, so they took away the option to block them so the review count would go up. It’s a bunch of bull crap. If the Admin feel that anon reviews are necessary, than at least allow the author the chance to respond to them and tell the reader to stop reading the story if they have so many problems with it at the very least. Does FF.Net not realize that they are creating their own competition with the other FF sites by doing this? That authors are leaving them and going to AO3 or TWCS where the Admin actually care about and protect their authors from this?

    • Andrea

      Hi, speklez.
I’m writing you this message to thank you for mentioning AO3 and TWCS on your post. I’m considering the possibility to leave Fanfiction net and have been wondering where I would post my stories, wondering where I could have the respect that once Fanfiction net used to have for its writers. I’ve accessed these two websites and they are indeed an option.
      Thank you again!

“Does FF.Net not realize that they are creating their own competition with the other FF sites by doing this? That authors are leaving them and going to AO3 or TWCS where the Admin actually care about and protect their authors from this?”

See, that’s the rub: When it comes to Author Rights they look the other way. AO3 was created specifically because FFn refused to LISTEN to its authors. Some folks got testy when I raised this point a few months back in other blog postings but it’s the TRUTH.

Telling people “If you don’t like how we do things, go somewhere else” will just reinforce the existing belief most disgruntled athors have that the Admins could care less about Author Rights and by extension, their stories. Silence is no longer acceptable in my opinion. We’re not wrong to expect a site as big as FFn/FP have some level of accountability at the top.

The criticism from people like me and Speklez shouldn’t be a surprise given we had NO means of communicating until earlier this year. The site’s 10 years old. In the real world, when people feel they’re being ignored they go elsewhere.

I think it would be nice if, at some point in time, there will be an option (much like the deletion of anonymous reviews) that deletes reviews by registered users, including one’s self. Unfortunately, my story “Fruit of Forbidden Love” has some irrelevant reviews, due to the fact the person I was speaking to is completely new to FictionPress and never registered (i.e. a conversation that should have been in PM but couldn’t). It makes for a hilarious read, though. Ha, ha! But it perturbs me at the same time, for I wish to keep reviews strictly pertaining to my story itself and not about something else. I like to keep thigns tidy and professional, when I can. xD

Hey, you’ll have to just up and report those reviews as accidental spam. If they did let us remove any review we want, no-one would have ANY criticism because they would remove it. Though, for some reviews I’ve wished to remove because they’re irreverent slams that half the time don’t seem to have read… or at least understood/taken notice of the story content correctly, leaving me wondering whether I sometimes get five year olds reviewing.

I absolutely detest the guest review option. Since it was implemented I have received so much spam on my stories and I cannot report them because they are “anonymous”. I have the guest review moderation option turned on but I still have to act on these spam reviews when I should have the option of not accepting them at all. I decline to accept anonymous reviews for a reason. I repeat, I hate, hate, hate the guest review option.

I have a question that concerns people who have accounts leaving rude comments. I know the reviewers have the right of way and all, but whats the deal with the admins not putting more pressure on them? I mean, we all love the same fandoms, but there are people on ff.net that are leaving crude, badly grammar comments on some well written stories just because its something that they don’t like. Some of these ‘reviewers’ don’t even have stories of their own, not saying that they should but it would be nice to see something so we can judge wither or not they’re just trolls. They also refuse to have PMs sent to their inboxes. I think thats unfair, because its like the admin is trying to protect them. And they aren’t just harassing people who like slash or femmeslash, but those who write certain straight pairings and sometimes gunning after people who reviewed the stories before them.

Criticism is fine, I welcome it when I write and post my stories, but saying to someone ‘Hey shoetingstar shut up you bitch like i said im always right i dont care . And this fic sucks deal with it troll. Cassie was lame and boring and dean is better then her too. Shoetingstar you better shut up bitch bye troll.’ is not criticism. This is an actual ‘review’ someone posted. You don’t have to agree with what someone wrote but you don’t have to be so rude about it. If you don’t like it, then don’t read it. A simple solution that many feel that it doesn’t apply to them. I know the admins have a lot on their plates, but if someone is getting reported by multiple people then shouldn’t they investigate?

    • merlinrecon

      03/15/2013 at 11:35 pm

I totally agree. I’ve had some rude reviews dealing with femme slash, just because its femme slash. I had once had a rude review stating that I should put a femme slash under M just because its femme slash even though at that time had nothing M about it. If that’s the case, anything dealing with love, boy meets girl should be M. Which by their logic would mean that most teen cartoons should be rated M (18) etc., they’re morons.

I’ve also had reviews asking questions yet they’re blocking PM’s so I can’t reply and I don’t intend to clog up my story pages (the next chapter) with review replies. If a person messages us, PM or review, that should NULL their blocked PM for us to reply.

Also, WHY can’t when we hit reply from our Email alerts (reviews) and have it automatically write in what we’re replying too? Its annoying because who WHO goes to their story to read reviews. And if its too long to fit in the alert, press reply and it shows you the full thing, so why can’t it automatically know what its replying to like it used too?

        04/22/2013 at 5:49 pm

I love femm slash there are other sites for that type of stuff and you will be more then welcomed to add at other places but yes I argee we should have the right to remove some reviews if the person is being rude ect

maybe a form or something to fill out and send to a mod
and if they think the reviewer is being rude or abuseing then the reveiw gets taken off

My feeling about feedback and fanfic is now and has always been: if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. As writers, we ask for freedom to write yet want to deny that same freedom to readers. If a story is good, it’s good. If someone is a troll, they’re a troll. Get over it. Fanfiction used to be a free-for-all and should remain that way. What I dislike is the when a writer is so insecure or pompous that they seek to eliminate all negative reviews (whatever they may be), use Author Notes as a personal (often psychotic) soapbox OR jack up their “numbers” with sock puppet reviews. Again, I’ve seen it all in multiple fandoms. I say change all name-without-account reviews back to the Guest reviews that they are. It’s more honest that way.

      03/22/2013 at 1:13 pm

Negative reviews are not a problem. I actually like them b/c they can be useful. Bit bashing/trolling someone isb just wrong. Most of the time, the reader doesn’t even read the story. They read the summary, click on the story, review with “this suxs! Gays r wrong and ur sick!’ Or ‘How could you think she would love him? He/She is the bad guy you idiot! This is hortible!’ And ending it “I’m always right” or something like that is not helping anyone. You think a story is horrible? Fine thats your opinion I can’t change that. But if you don’t explain why or judge it because of one or two things without actually reading it, then how does it help anyone? I don’t like people who belittle and bully just because they don’t like something the other does. Free speech is nice and all, but a hostile frer enviorment is also everyones right

It’s not criticism I object to it’s abuse, why should I have to have anonymous abuse posted on my page. I delete all guest reviews under the new system whereas before I would only get signed reviews.

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom to abuse people

  29. luxartisan

    03/22/2013 at 9:39 pm

@ Graham King — Of course, you’re right about the abuse thing…but what constitutes as abuse? To one person it could be as simple as “I didn’t particularly enjoy this.” To another it’s “ur the worst fkg writer eva.” Who decides? In a free forum like ff.net you’re going to get all kinds of people. That’s life. To assume you’re going to be protected by the admins is unrealistic. That’s not their job. But I do hear you. Considering how much controversy this seems to create, I’d be fine with the elimination of Guest reviews altogether. They seem to create more trouble than anything else. I’d even go so far as to suggest no public reviews at all. Back in the day (pre-2000), you sent the writer of a story you liked a review via an email link. That was personal, identifiable and led to genuine contact between people. I’ve made real friends over the years that way. Here, I notice that a lot of authors don’t even respond to reviews or faves or follows and that’s just rude. Seems like a big popularity contest to me instead of a sharing of good writing habits and fostering respect for differing viewpoints. OK, enough rambling. I’m outta here.

I’m writing a joint fic on fanfiction.net (where I’m collaborating with another fanfic user), is it possible for the other collaborator to also get notifications regarding reviews? Thank you.

You can forward the Emails using your email client, but otherwise, set up a new email address and both use it through Thunderbird.

This is what some one using guest review sent me

After reading your profile, I do have a question for you: Did you inherit this account from your older sister or are you simply this mentally retarded?

This is why some us have been asking politely to be allowed to block guest reviews

I received this review via the guest review feature:

“:I told you to stop making these freaking stories they freaking suck. You
stupid ignorant troubeled author. Btw I think my little brother could do
    better than you. Hahahahahaha!”

The guest review feature encourages no one but trolls, as can be seen.

Again, this is the reason why writers should be able to block guest reviews.

Sorry, it got cut off. I seem to be having trouble receiving any reviews. It thought was just being paranoid when this happened to one of my stories in Dishonored, but now, it’s happening again with one of my more popular stories in FFVII. Is something going on?

Yeah, you’re writing in Dishonored (still haven’t completed lol) and FFVII LOL! Try Harry Potter! Na, just kidding around. It happens to the best authors. Occasionally we write a chapter or worse, storry that our readers don’t feel like commenting on. Don’t worry about it and write something to catch readers attention next. XD

    Hello;
apparently I’ve had for days (and some contacts too) problems with our email notifications. The notifications don’t arrive and we have the bot account as safe (not spam): is there any way to know if specific cases or in general?
    Thank you.

I suggest that the ‘auto review response note’ is actually suppressing reviews being posted. I do not respond to every review posted on my tales, but perhaps 95% I do. Since the ARRN has been activated I sense a drop off in reviews on ALL stories. Authors need feedback and FF is the spot to get it. How about turning that feature of for a month and see what happens?

I don’t mind anon reviews at all. If people want to leave me a negative comment on my fics and feel safer doing that anonymously, fine. As long as I have the option to delete them if I want.

But I also want the option of deleting signed in reviews. I’ve commented on my own fics sometimes as a means of replying to anon reviews but I want to delete them now because they just give an inaccurate review number. Please give the option to delete all reviews if we choose. PLEASE.

No, I barely delete reviews even if they are bad. Don’t think too much on them because for every shody and useless review the average person will get 5+ useful reviews. We don’t write for the praise. Just think about how much hate ‘professionals’ get and they cant make them ‘reviews’ go away.

They should let you remove your own reviews! I commented on the wrong story saying that I like it. I commented on a flipping M rather than a K+. They should make this possible

I post on http://www.fanfiction.net and using the ‘handle’: The Light From Within. Why do I have to accept guest reviews? IF I don’t want them accepted on my stories, that’s my choice. Why does the site allow guest or anonymous reviewers to ‘review’ your story, print their profane remarks so that later after many others have read them, you delete them? I don’t want the unknown reviewer to have the ability to post on my story. That enables him/her to vent and I’m the one to have to accept it! It’s not right. What’s wrong with having only those who are registered with this site to be allowed to review? I’ve had to delete many profane ‘reviews’ from ‘guest’ ‘reviewers’, and I feel it makes me, the writer, look bad. I’d even be comfortable with having just the ‘guest’ or ‘anonymous’ review being viewable ONLY to me the writer of the story instead of to everyone else. Can this site help?

I wish the site would re0instate the means to disable anonymous reviewers because a friend of mind is being hounded and harassed by an anonymous reviewer who was blocked when they used to sign in. It’s getting so bad she’s thinking of leaving the site permanently which isn’t right. The way it is now only protects the flamethrower. She has written the moderators of the site and nothing has changed. Something must be done to return the power back to the writers regarding whether they want to allow flamethrower reviews or not.

My friend has received another harsh review that now threatens her. Writers shouldn’t have to put up with this when they post a story. She is thinking of leaving the site because nobody will do anything about it. This person at first logged in and left a nasty review and my friend blocked her. Now she is leaving these same reviews under anonymous names or as a guest as with her last one. Please re-install the means by which us writers can disable receiving anonymous reviews ourselves. Moderating such reviews doesn’t help because the writer still sees the reviews before deciding if they want to delete them. We should be able to disable them so that we cannot receive them at all and a person must login in order to leave a review. Below is the latest review she received.

    YOU ARE PURE SHIT!

    I don’t give a fuck if your a professional writer or not…

    YOU SUCK!

You don’t know anything about being pregnant! You shouldn’t be on this site at all and I will not rest until you’re gone!

    Please go away… Please?!

I implore you… Go the fuck away!

I hope you die a horrible death! I don’t care how many readers review you and say they like you! YOU ARE SHIT! YOUR STORIES ARE SHIT! IF YOU CAN’T GET IT RIGHT…STOP!

One of the changes that your site made several months ago has resulted in a marked increase in abusive behavior against authors.

You wouldn’t allow a writer to post a story without being a registered member of your site, yet you allow “guest” reviewers to post vile, abusive, threatening and offensive reviews. Authors are subject to your terms of service and there can be recourse should they abuse them. Guest reviewers can say whatever they want with no restriction or consequence – in my opinion, by allowing this Fanfiction.net is in violation of its own TOS because in essence FFN, by allowing these guest reviews, takes on the responsibility for these reviews.

I thought the goal of this site was to provide a safe creative outlet for writers, but allowing non site members to post anonymous reviews removes a major layer of safety. Several authors, wonderful writers, have stopped writing on this site, some stopped writing altogether because of the mental anguish brought on by the un-censored abuse. At least when a member posts a review the author has the opportunity to respond or ask FFN to intervene.

I am amazed at the level of cruelty and depravity unleashed in some of these “reviews” – none of it deserved. Even if the story was absolutely horrible, this type of abuse is unacceptable. Bullying should never be acceptable. Someone with something valid to say, will join and log on.

Please consider eliminating the “guest” reviews. Please make fanfiction.net a safe place for writers and readers – stop the mean spirited bullies from ruining your site.
