Thank you for solving the e-mail alerts issue! Drove me crazy seeing it all the time. Not sure about the timed-out connection though, I’ll check in on it :D

I’m still getting the connection to the server has timed out page. Is it because there are too many people on at once?

Still having problems. If I’m lucky I manage to get past the homepage. Just now I even got to first chapters of stories but no further. Log on still impossible. FictionPress homepage doesn’t even open.
FanFiction and Fictionpress are the only websites that I have problems with.

Hi, I’m not really having a problem (yet) with any of the bugs, but I do have a request you could probably look at when you have time?

Would it be possible to give us the option to turn on/off the image covers for stories? Like some people have said, they can be really distracting when searching for a story to read. That…and some people don’t truly follow the ‘avoid using suggestive images as covers’ thing. I hope you decide to think about it!

Thank you for your hard work!

I’d like to second MMC’s request. I didn’t like the story covers when they were introduced, but I’ve learned to ignore them as I browse. Having the option to hide them would be nice. Thanks.

      07/22/2012 at 11:33 am

Despite the fact I really LOVE the cover art, I second this. It could be a feature similar to the ad block program we have to agree to every day. I know the site has a rule that is supposed to prevent people from posting images that can induce seizures, however there are going to be people breaking this rule and some people have it bad.

That, and add a place we can report images that is separate from reporting the fanfic. I’ve seen people posting stuff that doesn’t constitute fair use and I’ve seen people posting suggestive images too.

    • ShikiKira

      07/22/2012 at 10:57 pm

I second this suggestion too. The cover art doesn’t really bother me, but it just seems to waste space or some authors post suggestive or worse images.

      07/23/2012 at 6:45 am

Ditto. I don’t really cares much about story cover when it comes to online reading. They serves no useful purpose. This story cover function is a useless veneer. A gimmick.

      • konarciq

        07/23/2012 at 12:13 pm

I’ll second this, too. I’m trying to learn to ignore them when browsing for a story (it’s the titles I want to look at, not the cover), but I still find them rather distracting. Pictures simply *do* attract more attention than written text. An option to turn the visibility of the covers off and on would be very helpful indeed – and much appreciated!

Besides, they may be fun to look at and to make, but I wonder how many of us are *not* lying when we check the box that we own this picture…

      • MMC

        07/23/2012 at 12:25 pm

Glad there are people who would also like the option. :)

Xing, I’m going to add another reason why I think it would be useful to have the on/off option for cover images: having the images off prevents image spoilers for fandoms with still/ever growing plotlines/stories. I just came across a spoiler image for my fandom…and needless to say, I was NOT happy that it was ruined for me when the video game for my fandom has not even touched North American shores yet. I feel like a pivotal point/event of the game story had been shoved in my face before I even had a chance to play through it.

So basically what I’m leaning towards, again, is that having the option to turn off cover images would REALLY help. Here’s hoping you are still considering it… Thanks!

@ konarciq – I’m not lying, but then I do my own art work for each and every single one.

        07/24/2012 at 5:29 am

To Yemi Hikari: good for you :-) I’m sure there’s lots of people who do indeed own those pictures, but with myself being mostly active in the TV show section, I sincerely doubt if all those pictures of the characters are indeed owned by the authors using them for their cover.

The problem is of course that when writing a story about those characters, the most logical thing to do is make a cover featuring those very characters. And what other pictures are there of them that we *do* own?

      • yemi hikari

        07/24/2012 at 11:37 pm

@konarciq – While that is the most logical option they would actually attract more attention if they thought outside of the box and choose a picture that actually fits the plots story line. For example, if you’re doing a Harry Potter fanfic that is about a brand new first year student why not do a picture of a steam engine? There are plenty of pictures that are free to use for that subject matter. Or if you have a title containing the word Rose, do pictures of roses. These pictures actually attract more attention then covers of the characters unless it is a cover with the characters doing something.

I’ve been having problems posting on the forums as of yesterday. When I type out my post and then press the Post Reply button, the page will refresh and everything I’ve typed will be gone, and the post wouldn’t be made. I’ve discovered that pressing Back in the browser will bring the text back, and then when I press Post Reply everything goes as normal, but at the same time it’s irritating and in some cases frightening (all that typing gone!) every time it happens.

I’m using Safari currently, maybe FFN isn’t agreeing with it?

I had a similar issue earlier when trying to report a non-story. The captcha was clear and easy to read and I was careful typing it in, but was greeted with the ‘invalid security code’ error. After a few attempts, I hit ‘new code’ and it worked.

Try refreshing the log in page. I had a problem with that one time where it wouldn’t recognize the code I kept typing in because I got the first one wrong. When it felt like I was just coming in there it worked fine.

I am having the same problem as favonfilla (above). I try logging in, but the captcha is preventing me from accessing my account. I’ve tried “new code” many times as well, and it still doesn’t work. I’ve even tried resetting my password, but I think the captcha is the main source as it’s not letting me do that either.

I JUST CAME UP WITH A GREAT IDEA!!!! Everyone wants a Yaoi/yuri/het filter. I’ve got something better, a exclusion character filter, or better yet two of them. This kills two birds with one stone. The reason why we want this filter is so that we don’t have to dig through hundreds of samesex pairings or a certain pairing that someone hates.

Allow me to give an example: In the Naruto archive, with the character filter Naruto U. on, there are 75000 stories, with the filter Naruto U. and Sasuke U. there are 29000 stories, nearly half of the Naruto U. archive. There are some days when one has to sort through 5-7 pages of fiction just to filter out what i’m not going to read, and every time i see a certain pairing, my rage rises.

    • yemi hikari

      07/22/2012 at 11:38 am

The yaoi/yuri verses slash filter would actually work better because not all the stories labeled Naruto/Sasuke are slash fanfic. They’re just the main characters.

      • yemi hikari

        07/22/2012 at 3:43 pm

Actually, I’ll add that it would have to be a slash/het/both/none feature to really work.

    • Why must you complicate things?

      07/23/2012 at 7:01 am

I JUST CAME UP WITH A GREAT IDEA!!!!

      By filtering.
      1. Change genre to Romance.
      2. Select desired character (Naruto U.) in character tab A.
      3. Select desired character (Sasuke U.) in character tab B.
      4. Hit ‘Go’ button.
      5. Profit!

      Using search engine.
      1. Type name of desired characters (Naruto/Sasuke) along with the word to indicate preference (yaoi/slash/mm/etc) in search box and hit enter.

      • cmcwiki

        07/24/2012 at 1:08 pm

you are missing the point. the idea is to NOT have to find those pairings

      • yemi hikari

        07/24/2012 at 11:40 pm

Lol! Missed the point big time. I write Gin+Ran=Toshiro and I can go and look for fanfics with Gin/Toshiro or Ran/Toshiro as the main characters and most of what I get is romance between the two main characters, not what I am looking for.

I don’t mind the new changes but may I make a suggestion? Would it be possible have an adult only section that is limited by a password or do some sort of age verification thing? This would solve the rating issue, and keep people happy. One easy way of doing this could be by having the user email a photo of themselves to you with a paper stating date of birth or something that way you can see that they are the age both on paper and by photo. I don’t know if anyone else would think this is a good idea but it would stop authors from leaving the site. I happen to know of at least 20 people who are moving their work because it may get removed, and I am very close to being one of them.

Now I’ve been a member of FFN for years, since it first started, first as a lurker and now as an author. While you encourage the use of the imagination, which is great and allows us to be artistic so to speak, you are actually limiting our creativity in a way that can actually change an ENTIRE story. Normally I’m not one to complain or give suggestions (unless betaing) but this has been bothering me for a long time, and I know for a fact that its bothering a lot of others.

Another idea if you do an adult only section, or even only allowing confirmed users to read certain ratings, make it so that unless you are a registered user then they can’t read it and if registered they have to be able to confirm their age with a pic and piece of paper in the photo stating their email, username/profile link, age and date of birth. Personally I think that’s a lot better than removing the stories that people have worked so hard on.

PS: Thanks for fixing the bugs mentioned in the original post. Sorry if this was the wrong place to pose this idea but I wasn’t sure where to send this.

      07/24/2012 at 12:15 am

I remember back when FFN hosted NC-17 rated stories. That was what? 10 years ago? I have no connections with the site, but I highly doubt they will create an adult-only section. There are too many legal issues at play and many advertisers don’t want to be associated with ‘risky’ content.

As for providing photographic evidence of age, that would be opening up a whole other can of worms. Who is to say users won’t simply steal a photo from the web and submit it? Not to mention there are teenagers who look to be in their 20s and people in their 30s who still get carded purchasing alcohol. What’s next? Providing a government issued ID and a credit card for verification?

If you feel you need to have MA rated material to tell your story, there are other places to post it. There are other fanfiction archives that allow just about anything, blogs, fan communities, etc.

Sorry if I come off snarky, that’s not my intent. I’ve seen a lot of users requesting a MA rating, but I’m fine with things now. There are other outlets to post/read adult stories if one so desires.

      • yemi hikari

        07/24/2012 at 11:46 pm

I wasn’t around ten years ago but I heard a lot of the members edited their MA content so it was M rated and then put the MA content up on another site that did allow it. While it took time to do, apparently it wasn’t impossible except for the really high end MA content.

@yemi hikari – Good point. I’ve read several T rated stories where the author lets readers know to visit his/her blog for scenes with graphic content. It seems to be a good compromise.

    • yemi hikari

      07/24/2012 at 11:42 pm

It isn’t likely for them to make an adult only section as there are laws in place to protect minors from adult content and FFN can’t check ID like a game store can. Yes, they can send in copies of stuff but even that can be forged or stolen and unlike seeing the ID in your hand, seeing a copy doesn’t have the same effect.

Hi, this is a general feature request, but I couldn’t find an email to send it to anywhere… I would love if there could be a view entire story option rather than having it chopped into chapters. I really like reading complete stories with multi-chapters but I don’t always have internet access. Being able to open the page and read it in one shot without constant net access would be wonderful. Thanks for all the new features that have been added recently. I really enjoy them!

The MA rating isn’t likely to come back as it is illegal to provide a minor with MA material. Checking a persons age isn’t like checking it at a game store selling MA rated games either, simply having an age verification isn’t enough and any copied ids sent in could be faked. There are other sites that allow MA material and MA material can be edited down to be M rated material most of the time.

I haven’t had any trouble with the bugs, but I’d dearly love to know the rationale behind the decision to make popularity the default category filter. This is incredibly annoying and illogical. Yes, I am aware that I can change to alphabetical with a simple click of my mouse, but I’m confused as to why this should be. Wouldn’t it be more logical to have alphabetical as the default and popularity as the secondary filter?
As it is, the setup is extremely annoying and looks incredibly unprofessional. I could possibly see the advantages of this from a mobile standpoint, but I use this site from a computer as well as from mobile devices, and it’s still annoying.
I’m sure this will be taken as an attack, but I’m publishing it here because you have not bothered answering my emails and I have yet to see a reasonable explanation. I will say that it’s quite damaging to your product and is making me seriously weigh cutting my ties with fanfiction.net (since 2000 btw) and move to more sensible archives.
Not expecting an answer, but cheers anyway…

I don’t mind the default sort filter being by popularity. I just wish selecting ‘all’ would stick. For example, I’m browsing the movie category and opt to sort by all. When I head over to TV shows, it defaults to popularity. When I go back to movies, the categories are sorted by popularity again.

It would be nice if our selection ‘stuck’ until a cookie was cleared.

As for the recent upgrades being damaging, FFN is still the most popular fanfiction site on the internet and the best, IMHO. I’ve had mixed opinions on some of the changes, but I eventually get used to them. :) Sans anything drastic, I have no plans to leave.

Logically speaking the fandoms that the most readers frequent are going to be the ones that are most popular. By sorting it by the most popular fandoms most of the people won’t have to go and dig for their fandom anymore. Particularly since the “all” lists are getting kind of long and its easier to look by popularity or by the letter unless you’re looking at the over all picture to pick out what you read. And I doubt few people really go around doing that.

    Hi

I subscribed to a community my friend started, and I know of at least four other people who subscribed it as well, the same day it was created. So I guess it’s a bug.

I’d also like to ask if it would be possible to make the covers bigger, like real covers, at least when you click on the story and start to read (instead of ugly small picture plastered on the top of the page all the time).

If they had bigger pictures then it would make it easier for people to steal the art work. They purposefully blur out the image when someone copies the link so that people can’t copy that way either. Also, a lot of these pictures aren’t ugly because they are small. Picking a good composition factors into this.

Thank you so much for fixing this! I’ve had this problem consistently for about four months and it’s finally working properly again. :)
