Larger Covers

03 Aug

Changes

  1. Clicking on the story cover within a story will now showcase a much larger cover image.
  2. Removed most of the underlines for site links for a much cleaner look.
  3. Tweaked forum ranking icons. The previous icons were a little too bland and a little too serious.

PLEASE, PLEASE bring back the color changing links I HATE the new format, it’s making it extremely difficult to see what I’ve already read, and which authors I like (as I only click on an author if I enjoy their work). I’ve been on ff.net for over 10 years, and read in far too many categories to actually REMEMBER every single title and/or author I enjoy, so this new format is making it very difficult to find the stories I enjoy, or simply things I haven’t yet read.
I simply don’t understand why fan fiction site would remove this ability.

Thirding (fourthing? fifthing?) the request to have visited links appear in a different color. It is beyond tedious to have to hover over every single link to see if I’ve read a fic before.

Also just to point out yes you can hover over the link with your mouse but I was using my tablet today and there is no mouse…. very hard to hover over the link to see if I visited it? Even the mobile version of the site didn’t use the change color for visited links. So that means all those people with tablets, IPads, Kindles, etc do not have a mouse so they can’t move their mouse arrow over the link to see if it changes to red to know if they visited the link. Yes when I touched the link and it opened the link for a moment the link stayed red but once I touched the screen or went to a different link it turned back to blue. Please bring back the color change or make it an option or something. Thank-you

You took a perfectly easy way to keep track of whether or not we’ve read a fic, and exchanged it with something that makes little to no sense and is confusing my memory-addled brain more and more each day, all to make the pages look nicer. This comes down to two things. 1) We’re not here to look at the pretty pictures like we would if we were on DeviantArt. We’re here to read. 2) Please, rectify your gaining a level in stupidity and put it back to normal, as common sense is saying that was a bad judgement call.

We would still be complaining about the links whether the site had cover art or not, not to mention the cover art has been in place LONG before this change was made. That’s two different issues.

        “We would still be complaining”

Truer words were never written. :) No matter what the site administrators do, there will always be complaints. Good, bad or indifferent, they can’t please everyone.

Another complaint about not showing which links are in your browser history. It is quite useful in finding fics and authors you haven’t yet read (or those that have expired from the browser history).

I have really liked all the changed to fanfiction.net except for the color changing one. I used that as a guide to see which sotires I have read and which ones I needed to check out. It was also a helpful tool to easily skim to see if any stories i had been reading was updated. If there is anyway to bring this back PLEASE do! I am lost without it! Everything else is great I think the site had benefited greatly!

Sorry, but I really don’t like the new way for uploading chapters. The other way was much simpler. What was wrong with the way we were doing it before?

    • yemi hikari

      08/05/2012 at 12:28 pm

The fact someone can upload a new chapter rather then replacing an older chapter with a new one by mistake. I actually did that for a chapter I was trying to make easier to read for me and the readers.

I’m… not entirely sure how I feel about all these changes, but I definitely like the icons that you can add to your stories and communities.

Though I like how the links and whatnot were before – if you can understand what I mean, but I can adjust to the change, eventually. Though I wished you kept the… purple-lining-thingie when you hover the cursor on top of…. BAH. Never mind, I don’t think anyone can understand what I was trying to describe…

i am new to fanfiction and i dont know how to publish a story yet, i’m sorry for using this comment site as a use of help seeking, but i need to know, i have a really good story to publish. But whenever i click the publish button it always sends me back to that same page. :( please pm me if you have an answer! :) x mn1

The publish button is a category button. When you push on it you need to then pick one of the buttons below that to get started.

The lines help to separate everything and make it easier to search through stories, please put it back. And i can’t see which links I’ve been on now since you’ve removed that.

Thanks for all the work and everything but these things really aren’t helpful.

Angle brackets are used in the HTML coding. To give an examples, indicates to begin bold text, indicates to end bold text.

I’m not a programmer, but I believe trying to code a page so angle brackets in a forum appear is a big pain in the butt. In the various forums I frequent, never appear in messages. I hope they show up for this post. :)

Will someone else with more knowledge on the subject chime in?

Oops, they didn’t. I’ll post again, using parenthesis to represent angle brackets. Hopefully, this is a good demonstration why they can’t be used. :)

Pretty much what Guest said. The “>” and “<" symbols are used it html coding. Programming so they appear IS a pain in the butt and I know this from what little HTML I’ve done.

Please, bring back the violet (or whatever color) for the visited links. Now there’s no way of figuring out if you’ve already read a story. We’re going crazy.

This is a bit off topic, but I’m having an issue with the line breaks when uploading a story. Some are working, some appear half way through my writing and some don’t work at all. It’s very frustrating.

For the color change issue for Google Chrome you can use an add on called “Change Colors”. When you’ve installed it go to any Fanfiction.net page and it will have a small icon for Change Colors, left click on it and Apply Override Domain. It will change the background black with silver writing, (it kind of looks cool, and seems easier on the eyes). However, the blue links now turn PURPLE! Yay! Awesomeness. I don’t need to complain much any more.

By the way, what’s the deal with the ‘making’ pics larger? I thought it would have meant like you can make the fonts bigger. Also, about owning the pic(s)? Seems a bit odd as most of us don’t own the pics we use for avatars, we just find them hanging around the net.

Actually… if you don’t own the picture you’re using as an avatar and permission to use it as an avatar has not been given the artist who originally created the work can report your avatar to the site admins for removal. The site admins possibly didn’t bring it up when they implemented the avatar system because this is considered proper etiquette on the net that is rarely if ever brought up but assumed that people know.

Okay not cool, for some reason my stories aren’t turning purple when i click on them. Really miss that feature, it kinda helps you keep track of what you have been reading and what you have been ignoring.

        08/05/2012 at 11:40 pm

That is nice for someone that uses Google Chrome but I don’t so how does the fix help those that don’t use Chrome and don’t want to use it? I know I can set my browser to “use system colors” and that would ‘sorta’ fix the issue but that would mean I would use system colors for all the pages I visited (unless I changed my browser settings again before visiting another page) I shouldn’t have to do that.

Plus as I stated before when you use a tablet you can’t hover over the link to see if it turns red or not.

      • myrddinlefay

        08/06/2012 at 6:10 am

@Candi: Maybe not, but looking around there is a similar add on for Fire Fox. I would reckon everyone with a Android phone would have Chrome because of its syncing and ability to log in on every computer you use and have all your bookmarks and settings on every computer you use. Anyway, I only said for Google Chrome, (nobody said what browsers they’re using, and lots of people do use Chrome, so I was just pointing out this fix.

Also, having played about with Change Colors options you can change the colours of links, and visited links to anything you want.

@AlixMM: as for the tablet if you used the Chrome app after setting it up on your PC and changing the colours to what you want it will work the same with a tablet (Android). It will then change the link colour to what you’ve chosen after you sync it with your Google account. So the blue link will turn and stay purple after you’ve clicked it. I know this works as I’ve been doing it now on my tablet.

Chrome’s a pretty cool browser as its quite fast, and syncs with every computer you log into. It saves a shed load of time as I have multiple computers. This means all the links I click on, on either computer and it will show up, plus all my bookmarks are on all my computers along with setting. Its really smart. ;)

I like a lot of the changes that were made, but the one I didn’t like was the removal of the color-changing link thing. I can’t keep track of the stories I already read, and it’s really confusing. My memory is not that good. Please bring that back!!!

I don’t mean to sound a little thickheaded or whatever, but I am kind of surprised with how many people have problems with the colored links. Maybe it’s because I only stick to two or three fandoms on the site (which are pretty much the ‘popular’ fandoms for the video game category), but I never had a problem remembering which story links I’ve clicked. I didn’t even notice anything about the change in color for the links until people started pointing it out in this entry…

Again, my apologies if I’m stepping on anyone’s toes about this.

MMC, I am having a problem because I am primalry in the Supernatural fandom and it gets like 5 new pages everyday. So that’s why I really miss and want the colored links back.

      • AlixMM

        08/06/2012 at 1:40 am

I myself read alot of different stuff from movie, tv, book, anime, cartoon to all sorts of crossover stuff. My community alone has over 2,000 entries and those are just the ones I really like and want ot keep track of so I can read again. That doesn’t include those in my personal favorites list. Many of the ones I follow have almost as many or more updates that Supernatural has (I read some of that too) so the color change in the links was very nice.

    • MMC

      08/06/2012 at 2:10 am

Ah, I guess I forgot about the updating frequency for some fandoms. I know mine are kinda big (at most, +60,000 stories for one fandom), but stories don’t get updated every five seconds. I guess it DOES make sense to have that link color change then. =/ Guess it just didn’t bother me.

      • Ray

        08/06/2012 at 9:59 am

And of course, there are fandoms where there are more than 500 stories with the same title. I tend to read some of them in my free time, and it does get annoying trying to discern one from another by summary or author’s names.

    • yemi hikari

      08/06/2012 at 2:41 am

There are a few other reasons I can think off.

      ~ Learning disability
      ~ Laungauge barrier
~ People who use the various sort features
~ Some writers update a fanfic more then once a day

      • myrddinlefay

        08/06/2012 at 6:28 am

The colour change is useful so you don’t try re-reading the same thing unless you want too.The amount of fics we come across that we don’t like can be huge. So those we might re-read will be in our faves or follows lists, and others that we didn’t like will be purple like everything, but if its not followed or faved we don’t need to look at it again!

@yemi ~ out of curiosity about some authors making more than one update a day… wouldn’t the chapter alert saying chapter 4, and the other saying chapter 5 clue you in? Though, honestly, I have no idea why those other things would need colour change, (if that’s what that list is for). I personally use it for the above reasons. Plus I read a lot from several fandoms, mostly Harry Potter and Naruto.

Can you *please* reset the text. The text has become so fine now that my forum is spaced waaaaay out. On the main page the section to the right that shows who last posted is now all the way *off* the screen. And trying to change the page view does *nothing* to help or fix it. And when we receive story/chapter alerts now, the text is so tiny and fine it hurts the eyes, and the area to click is now so much smaller and inconvenient. Can you in the support team *please* put the text back to how it was. You know the old adage, “if it aint broke don’t fix it?” Well, the text really truly was just fine, and in fact perfect for the site as it was. Please fix/put it back so that our forums aren’t spaced all the way off the screen anymore, and links aren’t so small you need glasses to read them. Thank you.

I just realised that the Google Chrome’s “Change Colors” add-on can make it so avatars/cover-art-pics aren’t displayed very neatly. So this is useful to other Chrome users who have been complaining about them them being detracting. I hope this helps. (You can select to turn off pics without having to change any of the pages colours).

I’m glad that the story link changes colour again when browsing in the fandom lists or on an authors “Stories” tab, but links still remain blue on the “Favorite Stories” tab. Also, the last chapter link “>>” stays blue wherever you are. Is it possible to change it back so they turn purple again please? The colour change on my Favorites list is how I determine if there’s a new chapter for me to read (since selecting to be alerted for all 400+ is not practical or desired).

I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t get the larger cover pictures to show up. The mouse turns to the pointer over the pictures, but when I click them, nothing happens. I’m on IE 9 and have no plans to change system (so please don’t recommend that anyone, my computer is slow and naff and can’t handle anything else, I’ve tried)

@Cetababe, I feel IE9 or FFnet is to blame because I’m hearing a lot of problems with this site with IE 9. You might need to downgrade to IE 9. Also, if you computer is slow, do a google search on how to speed it up. You might have a virus and some other kinds of maleware that can slow down your computer.

First of all, the covers are really a great idea; they look good and I find they make browsing the archive easier (as you can recognize a story you read before easily by its cover if the writer bothered to put up one).
After various updates have been made to the site that improved the layout, I was wondering if the story covers will ever show on people’s profiles (‘My Stories’ and ‘Favorites’ lists). As I’ve drawn my covers myself I’d like to show them on my profile too, and browsing the sometimes long favorites lists of other members could also benefit from showing the cover pictures you know from the archives page.
Another thing about profile layouts I think could benefit from a little tweaking is the communities tab. If a user manages a community or is staff of one, on their profile it only says the name and category of this community. Not all community titles are obviously hinting at the topic/focus of the community, so maybe it would be possible to add the summary/description too?
Thanks for the good work, guys. :-)
