Tweaks Aplenty

06 Aug

Following are updates to the desktop/regular site.

Changes

  1. New check-and-remove option added for Alerts and Favorites management to allow faster and multiple removals per action.
  2. Arial is now the default font replacing Verdana for a tighter layout and improved readability across all platforms. Users can change their story reading mode to ‘Verdana’ mode via the text style toggles.
  3. Story links now respect the :visited css property to alert users which stories they have already visited.
  4. Increased font size for those with high-resolution monitors (1400 pixel width and higher). Ultra high-resolution screens have very small pixel size translating to smaller texts and this change should improve readability for these users.
  5. Slightly darker blue colors for all links to reduce eye-strain for those that stay on the site for hours at a time.
  6. Darker horizontal rules (separators).
  7. Cleaner look for the story content/chapters management page.

Fixed

  1. Image manager pop-up selection out of alignment on some browsers.
  2. Fixed Alerts and Favorites management for those with monster 10K+ plus entries.

Notes

  • Sorting within Alerts/Favorites management will return in a different form in the next scheduled update.

I just realised that the Google Chrome’s “Change Colors” add-on can make it so avatars/cover-art-pics aren’t displayed very neatly. So this is useful to other Chrome users who have been complaining about them them being detracting. I hope this helps. (You can select to turn off pics without having to change any of the pages colours).

As for the font thing I for once don’t really care too much. As for the colour change thing being back, that’s cool, but I’m not sure whether its just me, but it doesn’t do it for authors.

    1) I HATE the font change!!
    2) What’s with the Favorites and story alerts page??!!! MULTIPLE pages??!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! I liked them better when they were just one big list!! It was easy to sort and find the story I’m looking for!! Now I have to flip through god-knows-how many pages to find one story!!!! PLEASE make the Favorites and Story Alerts pages how they were before!!!!!!!

Thank you for fixing the color change for story links, but can you also do that for author pages and latest chapter links. Knowing both of those is also really useful and now I can’t even hover over the links with my mouse to check. I’d much rather have underlined links everywhere than be unable to tell with just a glance whether I’ve visited a page before.

I’d also like to add that it seems that the color change for story titles does not even occur everywhere on the site- it doesn’t work in an author’s favorite stories list, for example. Please fix this as I find most of the stories I read by going through those lists whenever I’m new to a fandom.

Can you still make the font smaller or more options to make it smaller, the new font size is annoying to me it’s to BIG and not helping my eyes. Thanks for the new updates

Can you please undo the changes you have made to the sorting of favourites. I can no longer sort using the ‘update’ without it returning a load of gibberish over several pages. This is certainly not an improvement. Not a fan of the font changes either.

While I can understand the move from one-list to multiple-pages, I will say that I think you should put in an option to switch from one to another.

Sometimes, I search for a specific fic in my list due to something or another. It being on a different page means I have to go through each page and look for it. That honestly requires more effort than I SHOULD have to do just to find a story I had already read.

Guys, seriously. I’m blind, and I saw the note that said they’d fix the faves and alerts sorting features in the next update. Stop complaining already and be. Patient.

As for the person who suggested you have a pole for users to vote which updates should be applied, that’s a very good suggestion, which I agree with wholeheartedly.

Now, a repeated request for the site admins. Could you please make it possible to insert a separator with a keyboard command? Please?

I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry about the number of people who made it so obvious they didn’t bother to read the blog before complaining. And yes… the disabling of the option was done for a reason. They started with the basic set up to make sure it worked properly and then they’ll work on adding the coding to add the sort feature. It is as simple as that.

While I like the idea of the poll, certain updates need to come before others naturally. However, if they’re talking about new options that aren’t overly important they could do a poll to see which one the users want first. It would make their job a lot easier I think. But it shouldn’t be about saying no to changes to make the site look more professional and up to date compared to other sites. I know people don’t like it, but the last thing a website needs to be is behind the times in web design.

I second the option for the separator.

I think the last thing a website needs is to alienate its users. *Being behind* in something is a very relative expression, since progress does not automatically equal improvement.

Thank you for bringing back the colour change for stories already read, but could you please have an option to bring back the original Verdana font. It was so much better before, really smooth to read and I have bad eye sight. The new one is very tricky to read, even after clicking on Verdana, the font is too large. Should have just had the option to enlarge the text rather than change it completely.

Really hope that you guys at ff.net bring back the sort feature for the alerts/favs. I like that they are no longer clumped together, but the sort feature made it easier to find what you wanted to read.

    08/06/2012 at 2:20 pm

Change back the default font please! Arial really does strain the eyes more than Verdana and it does not increase readability. It’s actually a bit blurrier than Verdana was.

Thanks for changing back the link feature for the stories, but can also have it back for authors, forums, and other things?

I personally don’t get why everyone’s complaining about the alerts and favorites sorting. So it’s messed up right now, but they did say that there was an update for it soon. Just leave it be for now. Living with the problem for a few short days isn’t all that bad.

    • Katie

      08/06/2012 at 9:19 pm

You know why everyone’s complaining? WE. CAN’T. FIND. ANYTHING. I have 577 stories favorited. I, like other people, like to go back and read these stories sometimes. We’re strange like that, I know. But you know what the problem is? The new layout is by when you uploaded them. I fav’d lot’s of stories in a short period when I started my account. Most of the stories were all done in one day. So, these stories are all clumped together in a way that means that I must now go through 12 pages of stories that I don’t want to read right now, and other people have even more stories and therefore pages to scroll through.

This is more then a simple screw up – this is a major problem for people who use fanfiction to unwind from a stressful day – This should not be a stressful thing! It was fine before, and this whole ‘not warning the people’ thing? Yeah, that’s a GREAT way to keep people happy with the site. Because it’s not like there are no OTHER fanfiction sites out there to use…

These updates are complete fail. What was wrong with the default font? I’ve been on the site for four years, and I quite liked it.

Now, even though I change it to Verdana, it looks different. The size is all wrong, and the font looks more boxy, and less smooth. I shouldn’t have to zoom out just for it to be comfortable on my eyes. Do you realise how annoying that’s going to become?

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the readability before. Now I’m honestly just getting a little pissed off looking at the page. Was that the reaction you were aiming for? Pissing off your users? Because you do that a lot. With basically every change you introduce.

Has no one told you guys that The Internet doesn’t like change? Because we don’t. Maybe you should stop listening to whoever it is that’s suggesting these changes. Most people would appreciate it.

    Seriously. Just leave it alone.

Not happy with this print change at all – please put that option back on as it originally was – also not happy with the size change on print either. For someone with poor eyesight space is needed between words and sentences. This is the first time I have complained in all the changes you have done over the last few months. This one to an avid reader is very painful. PLEASE put it back the way it was. Was just shocked a little while ago when I went to my alerts – it is very difficult for me to navigate thru my stories – how long before the alerts sorting will be reinstated?

The new default print is hurting my eyes – and I am not able to reduce the size without going outside of ff – not happy about this. Has the verdana font disappeared? Is verdana the font that was in the middle? Why are you changing everything? Were there complaints about the style of print or size of print?

Within a story, with Verdana selected, and using Firefox, there is a limit to how small the “downsize font” button will take the font, and unfortunately, it’s larger than I prefer, and larger than used to be available. The smallest font I can request in a story is too big on my 1920×1200 monitor. It looks like the smallest font requestable is limited to a hard floor that is higher than before (seems to be failing around 14 points or so; why can’t we have 12, 10 or 8, like we used to?) I don’t care what the default is in a story, as long as we can change it; but right now, I can’t make it as small as the default used to be, in Firefox. It worked fine yesterday.

Please change the default font back to Verdana. I’m finding Arial much harder to read. Also, would it be possible to add an option to have your Favorites list displayed as a single page? I really liked being able to see all of it without having to load new pages.

If the sort feature must be removed from the story alert page, at least make the default sort useful – decreasing update date (most recent update first). Last added date is occasionally useful, but is not appropriate as a default. I frequently sort by title, author, and update date. Most often by update date to find stories that have recently been updated.

I’ll miss scrolling through the full list of stories. I can understand that only providing the first few most recently updated stories would decrease load, but its nice to have the full list available to browse.

While you’re working on this, a link to the most recent chapter would be nice. No need for an extra column, just make the update date a link or change the title to link to the last chapter instead of the first. At present I either click on the title adding an access to chapter 1 or the author name adding an access to the profile, throwing off the stats for those pages, before navigating to the most recent chapter.

      08/06/2012 at 8:35 pm

I just looked at favorite stories. The sorts by title, author, etc. are there, but they are per page not overall. By default its sorted by date added. If you click on title, you get the content of the current page (a subset of the list sorted by date added) sorted by title. That’s just wrong.

ps. When is the next scheduled update? Where is that info found?

The newly implement changes… aren’t working as expected. The font size on the “Sort” part in the author’s profiles is ridiculously TINY – the original size that was used since the beginning was perfect. On smaller screen resolutions/monitors, the TINY font size COULD work but for those that switch between both small AND LARGE screen resolutions/monitors, it’s an eye strain.

Changing Verdana to Arial… Not that good of a change either. Yes, we can change back to Verdana, but that’s ONLY in the fics itself, not the entire overall site. Verdana is actually a bit larger of a font compared to Arial when they’re both the same size number and as others have pointed out, Verdana isn’t much of an eyestrain.

The “Story links now respect the :visited css property to alert users which stories they have already visited” thing isn’t quite working either. It’s works ONLY on story links, not the entire site as before – the category and series’ links are still blue, and there’s no change in color when you hover the mouse over it. If the css can be changed back to the ORIGINAL format, all the better.

With these most recent updates, it’s just that it’s a case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” scenario. Most of these changes weren’t really necessarily.

Hey, I appreciate that you guys are trying to make ff easier for us to use, however, I keep getting more and more confused and frustrated. I’m glad that some people like the updates, however, I think a lot of them are unnecessary.

Thank you for bringing back the purple color after we’ve read a story. That made my day. But I don’t like the favorites and alerts page anymore. It’s confusing and I don’t like how I have to go searching one page at a time for a story I want to reread. I like the old setup better because I knew exactly where everything was in one long list. The new way, the stories are in random order and I could be searching for one story for a long time.

Also, relating to the Image Manager (I know I’m a bit late commenting in it), can you make a way for it to be optional? I have no artistic talent and my profile picture has nothing to do with the fandom I’ve been writing in – so I think that’s turning off a lot of people.

Again, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but a lot of these updates aren’t necessary. I liked the old setup of everything better. It’s too many changes for what seems like no reason.

Has anyone else noticed a weird glitch on all the Traffic Stats pages? After I land on it, parts of the page will slowly expand outwards, which is both unnerving and annoying. I can’t very well study a graph which is making its way off my screen. The longer I leave the page open, the wider it gets.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing back the changing colour on the story links! But I wonder -why not on all the links, like the authors’ names and in the forums? It’s *so* much easier to find what you’ve seen and what you haven’t seen yet.

The darker separators and the easier and quicker removals of things are good, too.

The story content/chapters page: I suppose I can get used to this, but for Pete’s sake, what was wrong with the old version? It seems like yet another change merely for the sake of changing it.

But the font change… really, Xing, was that necessary? I realize it may be a matter of taste, but it seems I’m not the only one who experiences Arial as much more squished together and blurred than Verdana. Add to that that the text now is rather too large for comfort, and half an hour on the site is giving me a headache.
If you now insist upon keeping this change for general usage, could you at least give us oldies an option (a box to tick or something like that) in our profile for making the old lay-out with Verdana the default setting on the *entire* site?

Generally however, I’m getting rather fed up with these continuous changes. More so since many of them are a case of “fixing what isn’t broken”, or even “breaking what wasn’t broken”. And for many of them I really don’t see what’s the point in changing it at all. It’s really getting annoying. When are you going to let us enjoy the site in peace again?

I agree completely! I absolutely HATE the update that puts our favorites on multiple pages instead of just one page. Now you have to go through each page of favorites to see what was updated.

The new font is entirely too large, like you said, at least give us options. Ugh!!! Honestly, as the saying goes: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”!

For the most part, I agree with konarciq, however I’m not as annoyed with the frequent changes as I understand that tinkering is often three-quarters of the fun.

Mostly, I like to second the suggestion of having a check-box in the users’ profiles to return to site-wide Verdana. Not all of us have expensive LCD wide-screen monitors and, frankly, Arial looks like crap on my 8 year old 19″ CRT. When it dies, I’ll get a fancy new one, but I don’t see the need to spend $200 just to view one site. Sorry, while I agree that it probably does look better in high resolution, we should have a choice.

That being said, I am happy that so much effort is being put into the site and agree that the performance has improved a great deal. Thank you for that effort.

Why has the minimum font size increased? I think it was fine before, now I need to actually zoom out on my browser just so that I can read it properly. I don’t understand why I can’t just use the ‘decrease font size’ take it down to what it was before.

And I’m glad I’m not the only one hating the arial font change. It’s somewhat jarring to browse through archives in that awful, squished font.

Personally I don’t mind the updates/changes, but the one thing that bothers me is that only the story name now changes color after visiting, not the last chapter mark. Please add this to the changes, as it makes it easier to see where you left off on the page/stories. When you only have a couple of minutes to catch up, it is nice to be able to simply glance at a page and be able to see if you have read the last updated chapter of a story without having to click into it.

Give us the option to change the font size and the font type to suit our own needs. The font size of the site keeps getting bigger and there’s no option to make it smaller. It’s putting a strain on my eyes when I’m browsing the site even for a few minutes.

The Ariel font is awful. The letters are thinner so the entire site looks squashed and increasing the default size of the text doesn’t fix that.

Forgot to add if you’re using Chrome, you can use extension Stylebot to tweak the font size and font type.

The default larger font is annoying even on 1920×1080 since you decided it was somehow a good idea to limit to story width across the board to suit tablet users and now with the bigger text actually makes it more annoying to read.

Thank you for changing the links back!
I’ll also be in a minority and say that I prefer the new font – isn’t this closer to how it used to be? I thought the verdana was ugly, but if it’s better for other people’s eyes, I won’t complain if the default font is changed back to that.

Okay. I can’t take it anymore. I have to leave a comment.

These updates are getting ridiculous. Most of them aren’t needed and just annoy authors as well as readers. “Don’t fix what isn’t broken” as I’m sure has been said enough already.

The Arial font change is the worst thing that could have been done to the site. Arial doesn’t help readability and it looks messy compared to more uniform fonts like Verdana. It doesn’t matter than you can change it back in the stories because it doesn’t change the fact that it makes the words a lot bigger and more obnoxious than they need to be as well as making the story longer. I’m going to have to zoom my browser OUT to comfortably read on the desktop version now, but then I’ll have to zoom it back I when I go to any other part if the site because the rest of the font is now too small. Verdana is a larger, wider font and easier on the eyes. I’ve literally sat and did nothing but read on Fanfiction for days before with the old layout, the one that the site has had for the four years that I’ve been around it and I’ve never had a problem with it.

For those of us with normally sized computer screens, the increase doesn’t help. It’s more of a hindrance. I personally started to type in size 9 Verdana font on Microsoft Word because Fanfiction had this font and size combination. I did this so that I had a rough estimate as to how long the story would appear on the site. With all of the changes, largely unneeded, my tried and true method is going to waste because there is a zero percent chance that I’m going to switch my typing defaults to such a terrible font. I don’t even know WHAT the size is anymore, especially since the font change messes up everything now.

Everything looks squished together now and if it’s not then it looks as if each word in a sentence is going to float away from the rest of it because the text is so huge.

Please, I implore you to PLEASE listen to your dedicated users and members. The option to set the whole site back to the old layout would be fabulous not just for users but for guests as well. I don’t know about anyone else, but if I had found Fanfiction in the state it was in now, I wouldn’t stick around. As it is, I’m contemplating copying every story I read to a Word document so that I can use the old font and size combo while reading. That would help to eliminate the space taken up by the giant boxes on the top and bottom, too.

And as I’ve seen others say, a poll would be an absolutely marvelous idea that would get people involved with these updates. The drawbacks are there, yes, but at this point I”m almost convinced anything else would be better.

I absolutely, 100% agree with you, Yami-sama42! I do the exact same thing where I began writing all my stories in size 9 Verdana font because it gave me an idea of how it would fit on the site, but now that that’s changed, I don’t even know how my stories are going to look, which bugs the ever living crap out of me!!

And yes, Verdana may be a bigger font, but at least it’s readable and easy on the eyes. Good suggestion about copying and pasting stories into Word to read, though it would become tedious eventually, at least we’d be able to read it how WE want to read it.

This poll idea is a fantastic idea! I believe as loyal users and members of the site, we should have a say in how the site should be updated… just saying. Been with the site for almost a decade now, and I have to say, I haven’t been this disappointed in fanfiction.net before. I don’t like the feeling one little bit.

And even though I’ve already commented, I did forget to say one small thing… I cannot stand how the site now seems so stretched. I know it may be because of how they changed the font, which hurts my already suffering eyes (thanks FF), but you’d think we’d be able to have a SWITCH mode? Kind of like Facebook? Where we can switch from the Old template, to the new template if we wanted to? It gives us the option and everyone stays happy.

FF, you should probably take that into consideration…
