Changes
- We have reverted the default font back to Verdana due to feedback.
We do wish there is a universal alternative to both Arial and Verdana in the land of browser typography. Verdana is nice and clear but extremely wide. Arial is compact and more traditionally pleasing but sometimes a little too squeezed with a lot of text. Verial font anyone?
Arial would now only be used in certain instances where spacing is critical. In addition, we are currently testing multiple web fonts for people to toggle/use for story reading pages.

THANK YOU. I know the inconvenience of Verdana when talking about space. But it’s well known that for reading in the computer is better.

Debido a los constantes comentarios, FF.NET regresó a tener Verdana como su fuente de default. Gracias FF.net

I wasn’t paying attention the font, but now I realize the change, I have to say I prefer the Verdana.

Love all the changes you’ve been making recently!
There was one thing I’ve always wanted to see – formatting in reviews and private messages – ie, bold, italic, underline, quote, etc. I can understand if it would make the review box cluttered, but a few simple options would help to make it more organised, in my opinion. For example, when people quote parts of the text, at the moment, it’s kind of hard to separate them…

A limited set of options in the review box would be nice. I always quote pieces of text that I like and also when pointing out errors. It is difficult to distinguish my comments from the author’s work first glance.
Even a basic, no-frills quote feature would be a huge help.

I’ll second this request. No-frills quote feature for the review box would be lovely. It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate – just something to visibly distinguish quoted text from the actual reviewer’s text.

I agree this would be great! Even just the very basic bold, underline, and italic feature would be great. It could also potentially help reviewers emphasize words without caps and so on. A quote feature would also be very very nice (and encourage mor indepth reivews i think) but i am a little unsure how it could be implemented..

Agreed! Would love options for differentiating between quoting from the story and my own comments. Sometimes when I leave concrit and need to point out what I’m talking about, it’s hard to set the example pulled from the story from the advice I’m giving.

Completely and totally agree, Paula. I’ve been wanting that since FanFiction.net first started.
I’m very glad you reverted back to Verdana…personally, although I can see why Arial is likable, Verdana is by far my favourite. It’s much easier to read on a computer.

Er, I don’t think much of Verial… But I do wonder what it looks like. Maybe give an example?

No, Verdana is perfect! Thank you SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH for switching it back. This is great!
It doesn’t matter about how wide the font is, it’s completely fine. It’s a beautiful font! (lol) No one has complained about it before, have they?
Once again, thanks so much

I don’t like Verdana to be honest, so one person… didn’t actually complain but did frown a bit at the wideness. I don’t like the way it looks
But of course, if it’s easier on people’s eyes, that’s more important than my opinions of what looks good and what doesn’t ^_^

It is a bit wide now, because they made it bigger. But before, when it was smaller, it was really cute. Small and easy to read, idk I just like Verdana so much better than Arial. Arial looks really weird.

Thank you for reacting to user response so quickly! I love the idea of this blog and that you can now clearly see feedback, and I love that you truly consider it. I think the Verdana font looks much better than Arial myself. As for font suggestions, I’ve always been fond of Trebuchet/Trebuchet MS; however, I’ve never seen Verial, so I can’t judge. Thanks again!
Lorraine

I like Trebuchet too…
What did the font used to be on the site? I’m sure that I liked it and I swear it wasn’t always Verdana… unless I’m going crazy.
Verial=joke. /Ve/rdana+A/rial/.

Thank you for the change! I like reading Verdana better than Arial, for all parts of the site. Perhaps a later change could be to allow logged-in members to switch the font scheme for the whole site to their preference. It’s great that it’s been changed back to the way it was; I’m a satisfied user.

Would it be feasible to use Web Fonts to get the look you want? Google’s repository is growing, and that option could mean “something for everyone” without compromising the site’s design or readability.

Thank you for changing it back!! So much easier on the eyes.
And I know you just did us a solid after all our moans and gripes (which, we very much appreciate!!), but I noticed after the change that you can step down the font now for stories, but it is really, really small. Would it be possible to make it a bit larger, or put another level of size in-between the two lowest sizes?
Thank you again for the change back. :]

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!! It feels a lot better to read the site now! Maybe the spacing is what makes it easier to read, especially given the amount of text that’s on the site, but I really can’t say for certain. I just know this is a lot easier to read than Arial!
Thank you so much!!

Oh…my goodness. I am so pleasantly surprised at this! Maybe I’ve been on Livejournal too long, but not only did you listen to feedback, you reverted a recent change BASED on that feedback? This is incredible! And I have to say, this blog has done absolute wonders for my opinion on FF.net’s management. I really feel like you’re listening to our opinions, and that can’t be a bad thing for any company. Thank you so much.

I prefer Verdana over Arial any day. Even though it is wider, it’s better than having a squished font. In fact, Verdana was created for on-screen reading.

Thank you for this change and for this blog. I was skeptical at first, but having someplace like this where you update us (and not only that, show a truly “human’ side with jokes like Verial) is very welcome after years of us feeling like there was no one home at the site.

I feel like i just have to comment and express my gratitude! For years upon years i felt a little bit like FF had no webmaster and was just magically run by itself as there was never word from the “owner” and when i emailed FF there was never any responses. So i am very happy to see you Xing (even when i gripe and complain in other comments
) and it is fantastic to see you actually listen to the feedback from this journal rather then just making us figure it out or get over it. I have never seen a site do that before (especailly so swiftly!) and am very impressed!
That said i still have a few suggestions; my main problem witht he fonts right now is that there are not enough levels of increase/decrease font size. So that i am always reading font that is either slightly to small or slightly to large. It seems to me that this would be a fairly easy fix? also another suggestion for the text settings would be to introduce another font type thogh i have no idea what it would be so that people can further customize thier reading experiance (for those that don’t love Veranda).
Thank you again!

Just thinking: would the Calibri font be something that more or less combines the advantages of Verdana and Arial?
Anyway, better stick to Verdana. Never change a winning team

I very much appreciate the change back to Veranda. I’ve never particularly liked sans-serif fonts, but Veranda is the best of them. It is FAR easier to read than Arial.
Now, for your experimenting for the reading pages, why not try a couple of serif fonts like Georgia or Century, or even Times New Roman. Georgia is one of my favorites for on-screen reading, as it is semi-large, very clear, and easy to read.

Helvetica maybe? It looks sort of better than Arial and takes less space than Verdana. Maybe you could experiment with that. Or maybe just use the Micorsoft Sans Serif, I really love typing my e-mails in that.

well i think that the font is too small now. I really love reading the stories here but can´t really enjoy it because my eyes are beginning to hurt while i´m reading. I hope you can change it to something bigger.
i would be really grateful.

Hmm, maybe you can use a web font with @font-face? Something like Museo Sans? Otherwise, I bet Tahoma would work well.

Thank you for changing the font back to Verdana!! It looks soooo much better and it’s easier on the eyes. Now, all I ask is that you add a “Sort by Category” so that we can search our favorite pages via category, which would be easier since the favorite page is now multiple pages (which I don’t like, but I’ll put up with). Either that, or sort the favorite’s page by category instead of making it the way it is now… It would just be easier and not as irritating to have to sort through, especially for those who have a huge favorite’s list… like me, who has over 700 stories favorited. Please and thank you!
