Site Loading Fixed

30 Aug

At 2:50PM GMT-7 US Pacific Time, we experienced a technical glitch with our 3rd party content delivery provider causing site to load with broken layouts. The issues have been resolved and everything should be loading up normally.

We apologize for the short inconvenience and are in contacts with the provider to see what went wrong and how to prevent this from happening in the future.

Currently I’m having a really strange error on the main account page (Account – Settings, the default). Everything is spaced out and the tabs on the side won’t open and most of the boxes around the text are gone. Is that the layout error you’re referring to? I’m still having it.

Does a security warning thing pop up every time you try to get on it? If so, the only way to get around it is to press NO or Show All Content.(it’s different for some) It’s annoying though, since you have to press it when going to any account page or posting anything.

I had the same issue, but like others have said, it’s alright now. I actually clicked on the link to the blog, read the most recent post, pressed the back button to go back to my account page, and in the space of those 40 seconds, it had sorted itself out. I did kinda like the idea of being able to go to all the browsing sections or the forum and community sections directly from the account page though. If you are planning on adding that as a permanent feature, I wouldn’t mind too much. Dunno about other people though. Sighted members tend to react badly to major changes in the layout. Just thought I’d suggest it.

Why are half the stories I’ve read don’t show up as that I’ve read them? I’ve noticed that the link for the story is has the same story id but that if it has multiple words they now have dashes in between them rather than underscores (ex. This-story vs. This_story). Are all the stories going to be changed over this way? Should I be changing my bookmarks?

Could their be a button to surf the site in completely dark theme? I prefer reading stories in dark theme and when I go to a profile or search for another story the site’s in bright theme?

Where’s the best place for me to report plagiarism of my stories? I tried the “support@” e-mail address and also a tweet to the twitter address; neither were replied to, leading me to believe admin don’t care about plagiarism on their site – which is a disappointing conclusion to have to reach

Try reporting the individual stories via the ‘report’ button down the bottom of the story. It can take a while to get a response; the mod team are probably pretty busy. The livejournal community stop-plagiarism. livejournal. com could also help you with filing reports, although it is not affiliated with FF.Net.

I would say it’ll be taken care of quickly but that’ll be lying to you. Admins take way to long to do anything let alone the slim chance of getting a reply. Just keep reporting it daily with the report abuse button at the bottom of the page. Keep in mind though, it may take months or even years to get noticed…

@PD31: It took them 3 days to listen to me and remove a story that belonged to me. How long have you been waiting PD31?

I reported each chapter, and then sent an email to support with as much info as I could with all the links to their fake, and my original. I waited impatiently, and I must admit doubtful that it would get sorted very quickly, but it did.

        Thanks SS

I e-mailed them Tuesday and tweeted both Wednesday and Thursday and, following above suggestions, reported this morning.

The same person (under a different pen name) plagiarised the same story last Friday; it was removed and the account deleted when I challenged them directly in a review and via PM but, obviously, it hasn’t stopped them from doing the same thing again.

        This is the e-mail I sent them…

        Dear admin,

I am writing in connection with suspected plagiarism of one of my stories (iCarly/Victorious Crossover) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7722168/1/Freddie_Goes_To_Hollywood

On Friday an author called “Challenge King” published a near identical first chapter – I accused them over it and it was taken down.

Today an author called FanFicReaderandCritic published iTransfer http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8474979/1/iTransfer . Again it is virtually identical to the opening chapter of my story (they have, at least, said it was “inspired by” my work – something that leads me to strongly believe it is the same person, perhaps you can check this through IP addresses?)

I would appreciate your assistance in looking into this matter as I am sure plagiarism of authors’ work is not something you want your site to be associated with.

        Many thanks

        PD31

I’m having a rather strange problem with the “view counts” on my stories. For example, one story that I noted having over 32,000 hits before is now showing up as only having about 27,600. Is anyone else getting different counts? Is this an error or a correction?

I have a question re: another topic: In our author alerts list I used to be able to set them to be alphabetical order. Now I can’t. Is there a way to fix it. I went to remove someone from my alerts list cause they had not posted anything on their account in over 3 years, but did not want to go through the entire list of over 200 authors names.

  18. Here we go, again.

    09/02/2012 at 1:05 am

*snort* why is it that every time whatever coder working for ff net tries to ‘fix’ something, or even tries to add something… everything else gets thrown off? Apparently I missed the background change, haven’t had to log in to my account in the last twenty four hours, so haven’t had to experience whatever problem seems to be going on with the accounts at the moment either. Though, from the information that site admins/mods are slow to respond, does have me wondering if the site admins/mods are also responsible for coding the site? (i.e. no time to pay attention to their customers because they’re to busy trying to fix their latest cluster… err, mistake)

For example, something I’m noticing with the story filters, general access, not from any signed in account; again. This time, it seems that for some reason the straight fiction (as in not crossovers) has a bug up it’s filters, this time affecting the rating’s filter. Example, simply changing the ratings options from its default setting to ‘all’ and no other filter choices changed, actually removes several stories from the listings. Last week it did the same with the language filter, and I haven’t used it since, so I don’t know if that bug’s been fixed either.

I just find it strange, and annoying, but mostly strange how most of these bugs show up when they ‘fixed’ something, or added something that doesn’t seem to relate to the filter feature in any way, but still manages to screw with, or screw up (royally, on occasions) the filter system. And always in the plain fanfiction section too. Yeah, two or three of these buggings messed with the crossover section, but most of them just hit the plain fanfic section.

I don’t know much about all the community stuff, but when I tried to add one of my stories to another community, it said that I can only add it once. But I saw other stories in multiple communities archive, and there’s even the section of showing how many communities a story is in at the Legacy Story Stats. I’m confused!

    • MMC

      09/02/2012 at 4:33 am

If you yourself add a story to a community (ANY community you’re allowed to add in), you can only add the story ONCE; you cannot add that same story to another community. In order for that same story to show up in multiple communities, other people have to add it to the community(ies) if they have the power to do so.

I’m guessing the reason why the site did that is to prevent abuse/spamming when the same writer decides to add one story multiple times in many communities? Either way, that’s how it was set up; it’s not a glitch or anything. Pretty sure if you want to remove the story you added to a specific community or want to move add it to a different community, you can by going to your menu.

…Did that make sense? I sound repetitive. lol

Oh that clears up. Shame… two nice people have their own community, and I already added mine on one, so I was troubled about which community I should go with. Thank you for explaining! It helped me a lot!

      • MMC

        09/02/2012 at 2:08 pm

No problem. I had the same question before since I felt certain stories belonged to more than just one community. If you want, you can always ask the community owners if they can add your stories based on recommendation. :)

Ok… so after checking a few concrit groups, it seems you’re back into your “We don’t care about deleting crap that breaks the rules” phase.

Good to know. That means it’s useless for me to report anything because you won’t delete it. I get it. I won’t waste my time trying to give you a hand anymore with those pesky songfics.

Let this site continue to be called the “Pit of Voles” for all I care.

    • merlinrecon

      01/09/2013 at 9:43 am

Why should you care so much. Its not your site. Its up to Xing and team whether they want to care about these things. I doubt the team is very large anyway, and with this site being the largest and most popular its hard to do everything you want.

Anyway, I’ve read some good song-fics. Though, in all honesty they should loose the song and just be under poems/drabble/one-shots. They can still say in their A/N or summary that the fic was inspired by a song. I find the song ruins the mood of the story anyway.

@yemi hikari – what’s “stop plagiarism”? Is if something on the fanfiction site or something separate?

      09/02/2012 at 2:08 pm

I think its a LiveJournal community?

    • yemi hikari

      09/02/2012 at 8:48 pm

It’s a live journal community that works on documenting cases of plagiarism in the fanfiction community that are brought to their attention. They also clarify that certain cases aren’t plagiarism.

A note to say that the account (FFReaderandcritic) has been removed. I haven’t had word from admin one way or the other but I will assume that they have dealt with it so my thanks to them (if they read the comments on here). So Tyner, as suggested above, e-mail them with as much detail (links, story names, account name of plagiarist) and us the report abuse button.

the forums. I go there to try and find things like writing tips or critiques and all you find are roleplaying topics. You can’t even sort through them to find actual writing topics. It is impossible. I also wish you would allow more leeway when it comes to M and MA stories. Not every author here is a teen or kid and some works are more plot oriented with adult scenes and themes sprinkled throuought; not pure smut found on places like AFF. This is for both FP and FN.

I’m going to sound like a broken record, but the MA rule has been around for at least ten years now (I think…) and I don’t think the admins plan to budge after that long. And yes, I am aware the lemony stuff still gets posted anyways.

I understand where you’re coming from with the ‘sex doesn’t make the story’, but what can you do? It’s the site admins that have the final say.

I agree with Vlad, that I wish M / MA stories would have a place on FFN, or at least that you would devote a blog post to a better description of a. What constitutes M versus MA and b. What exactly happens if your story is felt to be in violation of the ratings. My general rule is that I like to stay in “romance novel” territory for descriptions of smut, but let’s be totally honest — 90% of the reason people read and write fanfic is to see characters they know and love “getting together” in ways that maybe they didn’t in the original material. How characters interact physically can be an important part of their relationship, and the description of “M” is SOOO unclear. What constitutes a “detailed description” of sexual activity? The number of paragraphs devoted to the smut? Naming of certain body parts? I am pretty nondescript, but strike me dead if I ever use a hackneyed phrase like referring to a characters “womanhood”. ;-) I know the adage about porn being only definable as “I know it when I see it” might be easier, but I think it is fostering a sense of paranoia (warranted or unwarranted) among authors that they might log in one day and see all their stories gone without the opportunity to edit — or even guidance as to what might have needed to be edited.

I have a question: is there a way we can sort by word count? I know we can filter it so we can only see works above/below a certain word count, but it would be cool if we could organize them longest to shortest or shortest to longest.

Sometimes I like to access the site on my phone, to check if I’ve gotten a review, or to just read a story. I’m not able to log in because my phone is a piece of crap, it can’t handle the security code thing, but I’m usually able to navigate around the site. Lately though, I can’t click any buttons, including “Next” for the next chapter, or “Go” to sort the search results. So I can basically read any story, but only the first chapter. This wasn’t the case last month, I could click the “next” button.

Anyway, I’m just wondering what’s changed and if there are any plans to make it work again. I have an LG Rumor 2, if it’s relevant, browser version: 7.2.7.2.531. Thanks.

WTH! It was working a short while ago. Then I uploaded another new story and suddenly the new one doesn’t work and neither does the last! The new one doesn’t even show up on my profile.

It was working fine, but this keeps turning up on a story I KNOW is there and works. I put it there. Is it these new updates?
