Author Filter for Story Favorites & Alerts

10 Sep

Changes

  1. Added Author Filter to show only stories from selected author. Applicable to both story favorites and alerts/follows in the management area. This is more powerful than the defunct authors sort since the filter acts as a grouping feature.
  2. Story Update Date is now set as as the default sorting option for Story Favorites and Alerts/Follows. Change is made since this is most frequently used option and almost always the first thing an user would want to see when they bring up their lists.

Please note that the ability to display thousands of favorites/alerts on a single page will not be enabled and the current paginated method is the way of the future. Having thousands of listing on a single page will slow most browsers to a crawl if not outright crash them. With the sorting option, category filter, and the new author filter managing your favorites/alerts is now more user-friendly and enables the management of large favorites/alerts numbering in the 10s of thousands.

It’s a good idea which I definitely support.

The only thing I would like to request is to add links to order alternately ascending and descending by clicking on the table headers (like Story, Author, Category, Updated, Fav Added). Adding this would round out the current functionality.

I can understand your reasons for the multiple pages vs. one when it comes to favorites list. Can’t speak for everyone since I don’t have that many favorites in either the stories or authors area, but personally, I’m grateful you gave us a bit of an explanation on why the favorites are like that now.

I will check out the changes when I get the chance. Thanks!

Thakn you for the huthor sort but personally it would have made more sense to me to just add it to the update sort menu. I have many different authors in my alerts / favorites lists but to have to sort thru each one is very time consumming and pointless really.

I agree with Laila. It would have been better to not have a sorting option for each individual author, and had just added it as an alphabetically sorting option with the update sort menu. What’s the point of this option if you don’t know the author’s pen name or only know the first letter of the author’s pen name?

What are you talking about? All someone would have to do is click on an author’s name in the filter and it would show the stories from that author that are favorited.

        09/11/2012 at 9:39 pm

@Living For Jesus: Yeah, that gets tedious especially since this is for the stories Favorites and Alerts list not the author one. Not everyone knows which author writes what story. I don’t even keep track of which author writes what unless I actually talk with said authors. You can expect everyone to know the authors for each story. If we used this sorting which separates all authors individually, then it’s kind of waste when the member only has one story added to the list from that author. The sorting would be better off they had just added under the sort by menu.

I’m going to try to be polite in my response. It’s mindboggling what has been done with the favorites! The new and ‘improved’ favorites is a pain in the backside. And this particular ‘improvement’ for an ‘author filter’ does not allow for the stories to be filtered by author unless you know the exact author you’re looking for. It only allows for ‘all or none':( Every single change made to the favorites section has either eliminated something or added multiple steps/scrolls where before there was only one step/scroll.

Story – old way, click the header & get all the stories in forward/backward alfa order, one/two clicks & one scroll. Update makes for minimum 3 clicks, more if located other than 1st page & no backward alfa order at all.
Author – old way, click the header & get all the stories grouped by authors in forward/backward alfa order, one/two clicks & one scroll. Update, unless you know which author you are looking for, oh well
Category – old way, click the header & get all the stories grouped by forward/backward category order, one/two clicks & one scroll. Update, more steps, no improvement
Updated – old way, click the header & get all the stories in forward/backward updated date order, one/two clicks & one scroll. Update makes for minmum 3 clicks, more if located other than 1st page & no backward order at all.
Fav Added – old way, click the header & get all the stories in forward/backward Fav Added date order, one/two clicks & one scroll. Update makes for minmum 3 clicks, more if located other than 1st page & no backward order at all.

Old way: click the header, scroll – easy!

And what’s up with the scroll bar at the bottom? The window to type in is only so big but the scroll bar sometimes pops up out of nowhere & causes the 1st letters to the left to disappear unless you go to the scroll bar & move it to the left. Total waste of time!

I’d say I’m speechless over all this but obviously that’s not the case:) I suspect 2 things. Either this is a case of nepotism gone bad or ‘the powers that be’ are sitting back eating popcorn while watching all the chaos around them thinking it’s great entertainment, exactly like what happen during the ‘Witch Hunts’ a few months ago:(

I’m usually not much of a complainer. I don’t even mention bad spelling when reviewing stories. But these changes are so bizarre to me. There are so many improvements that could be worked on that would make so many people happy that all the work put into trashing an already working system is just bizarre.

    I’m done

I know that the site admins need to make it so you can sort through multiple pages. However, I don’t get the complaints about having to click more times with the mouse to get the information you want. I would rather have to take a few more clicks then have my browser slow down like it used to. I imagine it was worse for some people too. A few more clicks to save a bit of time isn’t a bad sacrifice on our part.

Also, I don’t think nepotism is the word you meant to use. Nepotism means “patronage bestowed or favoritism shown on the basis of family relationship, as in business and politics“. I think the word you are looking for may be nonsensical. And even then the site admins have explained their reason for making the change. It will take them time to allow sorting through multiple pages.

Would you rather they make it so we can do it right away and have a bug that takes them time to fix because of the complexity of the coding for something like this? Or would you rather have something that functions despite not to the degree any of us want until they can get the coding done?

      • csp4 (Cindy)

        09/10/2012 at 9:10 pm

Nepotism is exactly what I meant. A person hired only as a favor to family or close friend, then given ‘busy work’ to keep them occupied, quiet & out of trouble – hopefully.

I know I’m not the only person in the world so just because I have never once had a problem with my browser slowing down while on this site doesn’t mean anyone else can say the same. All I know is that something that took me 2 to 5 seconds to find before may now take me 30 to 60 seconds to find or may now be impossible to do at all.

Ah. Thank you for the info on sorting not working for multiple pages. I can understand why that would be a pain. I suppose the way it has to be done now is to select a category and manage each one separately. It’ll probably never be an issue for me, since I’m rather choosy about fics that get on my Favorites, but quick header sorting over multiple pages would be a feature I would want should my list ever exceed a page.

“I personally don’t have any issue with the changes. They’re not gonna change it back, so just build a bridge and GET OVER IT ALREADY”

I’m happy that the changes have addressed your wants & needs but it’s unnecessary to say “GET OVER IT ALREADY” to people that may be disappointed that something important to them was taken away. If you’re satisfied with the changes & you’re secure in the fact they won’t change it back, then if all the “whinging” is irritating you, stop reading the thread.

UGHHH!!!! You people can’t do ANYTHING RIGHT!!!! When I kept saying it was easier when we could sort our Favorites and Story Alerts by author, I meant alphabetically throughout the WHOLE list, not by single author filter!! I agree with csp4, the changes you’ve made recently are only making things more complicated than they should be!! I say change the Favorites and Story Alerts pages back the way they were!!

    • Princess of Troy (@Andromakhe)

      09/10/2012 at 4:53 pm

I could be wrong, but I am on my Favorite Stories page now and I can click headers and get forward and backward alphabetization for category, author, title, etc. So I’m confused as to where all the complaining is coming from. The filters are handy if you just want to see one category. It’s merely another set of options to make large lists more manageable, I’m assuming. No one is saying they must be used if they are not needed. Of course, my Favorites fit on one page, so maybe the multiple pages don’t save sort settings. Even so, the header clicking still seems to work.

Believe me, you’d be livid too if you experienced these piece-of-crud changes first hand. Why oh WHY couldn’t they have just stuck with the header-sorting?! Using FanFiction was SO MUCH easier back then!!

When the number of fanfics equates a second page you can no longer sort them. This is something the site admins will have to fix and it will take time to do so.

I agree with you Atem’s Sister Atea and Cindy, this is just plan out irritating. I liked the original better than this crud. I want to be able to see all my fav. authors on one page. In aphabetical order. Not this.

Seriously, you guys are just making things worse for us users. Many of us like what you were doing before all this crap you added. You had a neat drop down layout for our accounts, no covers for our stories, and, especially, NO SHARE feature. Gods I can’t tell you how much I and other users hate not being able to disable that.

You guys need to listen to us users more, this is just making us want to leave the site. It has gotten so bad that I now have to resort to the moble feature since it is the only thing close to the site that I used to love and know.

Granted, you need to majorly improve on your response to your reports. I recall reporting to you guys about users abuse and rarely anything was done. And it still seems that way, I noticed that many users have been reported these Read the Books stories and none of you have yet to take action against the users. If you really want to improve your site, start by helping us users with our problems. I’m sure there are LOADs of reports and ask for support that you guys have yet to get to. My recommendation to you guys is to do a monthly check up on the sites to make sure users are not breaking the Guideline Rules, cyberbullying which happens a lot to users who are critics, and what ever happened to the Red Button?

Help the site by helping us first.

Can you at least give us an option to ~View All~ … I like to be able to see all my favs/stories on one long page. If not everyone does, fine. But give others an option for it instead of just taking it away. Going to each new page to find what I want instead of a quick scroll through is a pain in the backside. So again, at least give us the option of a ~View All~ button.

Actually, I like the multiple pages better. With only fifty per page instead on jamming them all on one page, it’s much easier for me to scroll through. As for finding what you want, that’s why the Category filter is there. Use it.

It’s not very effective when you have several hundred favorites in the same category. The category sorting is halfway useless when it comes to crossover stories.

The only filter I need is the update date and category filter. I really don’t see how filtering by author/ess is in any way useful. Having hundreds of stories in my alerts rendered my ability to remembers who-wrote-what down to 10 or so peoples.

Why not put a status filter in the story alert section? A way to know which stories is completed or in progress would help in managing our watchlist.

“Having hundreds of stories in my alerts rendered my ability to remembers who-wrote-what down to 10 or so peoples”
One way of unclogging your story alerts is to add them to “Favorite Stories” instead. Whenever the author updates the story, it will go to the top of the “Favorite Stories” list (page 1). At a glance you can tell which story is updated by seeing that the “Updated” date is more recent than the “Fav Added” date. After reading the story update, delete it off your ‘Favorite Stories” list then add it back on. I have no idea what doing this looks like to the author, but no one has ever called me out for it. I have no stories on my alert list & no emails to punch thru plus I’m right on top of any story updates:)

“I really don’t see how filtering by author/ess is in any way useful”
The major way I used the author filter in the “Favorite Stories” before the change was to scroll down the list & be able to see which authors have multiple stories in my list. If I’m searching for a new read I would 1st check out author’s I’ve enjoyed the most to see if they have anything new going on. This cleared up my “Author Alert” list & my email since (before) I would only alert an author if I suspected a possible sequel. With the new changes, my “Author Alert” is filling up along with my email even tho I don’t ‘alert’ every author.

To all those who are having issues with this update: Please, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, stop whinging about something they’ve already clearly stated they are not going to change. I don’t think the admins appreciate being whinged at, and people like me, who read the entire comment thread to make sure their point will be unique, are getting bombarded by the frankly repetitive complaint posts. They responded to your requests to make the sort-by-update option the default, so they’re listening. You don’t have to keep repeating yourselves.

I have to agree with you here. I don’t mind the ocassional complaint, but for people to repeat it on EVERY blog post is getting really old. Plus, I feel like being rude about it is not the way to go. It looks more immature than anything.

I agree with you both, The Imaginatrix and MMC.

When the blog first started, I enjoyed reading the comments of other users. There’s really no other place I’ve found where we can express our feelings on changes and keep track of upgrades.

Many people here I agree with, just as there are many I share a different opinion. I haven’t always like the updates, but I have slowly gotten used to them. There have been some misunderstandings and a few heated arguments, as can be expected when inflections and tones of voices can’t be discerned, but it’s been a generally friendly experience.

Lately, though, the environment has turned harsher with lots of sniping. We don’t have the right to make demands of Xing and his crew. They provide a free service. They don’t have to. It disappoints me to see commenters making demands and snide remarks toward the admins, such “as you can’t do anything right.”

I still read the blog entries and skim the comments, but there are times I half expect to come here and find the comments closed. This is getting wordy, so I’ll shut up now and go back to lurking. :)

    “No good deed goes unpunished.”

Every new change Xing makes is heralded by a howl of “We liked it the old way! Change it back!” While other writers have likely been howling for this exact change for years.

Seriously, if you hate it that much, go somewhere else. If you do, I think you’ll find that you won’t get a quarter of the amenities, the page views, the review count, or the exposure that you get at ff.net.

The reasoning behind the current changes has been explained. Xing and his merry minions are looking to the betterment of the site as a whole and what will make things easier for the greatest number of users. Overall, I’ve been pleased with the results. Thank you, Xing and co. for the upgrades.

I have to agree with Readerof Fic. I don’t like the new Favorites and Alerts listing, Since it’s never going to be changed back to the one page list please give us the option of View All with the stories sorted out by category and stories with two categories listed at the bottom. Some of us don’t mind our browsers being slowed down by all of our favorites/alerts being on a single. If you add this option, you probably won’t get as many complaints from us users and the original sorting we like won’t be completely wiped out.

The author subscription list is under Traffic Stats -> Legacy User Stats. The Legacy Story Stats are handy, too, to be able to see immediately how many subscriptions, favorites, reviews, etc are on every fic you’ve written. Hope this helps.

I’m a bit unimpressed by the complaints here, since admins clearly stated they won’t do anything about it. :/

Also, a feature suggestion. Can we please have an option to control the story alert? I recently just had an alert on an oneshot, which is clearly completed and won’t be continued. This bothered me a bit, since it seemed like they didn’t even read at all, let alone even appreciate it in its’ entirely. Or the fact that they looked like an idiot when they did so. Actually, I had this quite a few times, and I’m sure it’s quite common with other writers too.

Just the story alert though, I think, could at least have a ‘on’ or ‘off’ switch when it came to having a completed story, if not ‘off’ automatically once the story is marked completed.

Also, any chance of allowing us having a few more statuses, ‘On Hiatus’ and ‘Discontinued’, and having a some sort of World Statuses (IE, ‘Alternate Universe’ and ‘Canon Universe’)? Oh, and I would very much like having that note feature you speak of too! Just a reminder, that’s all. :)

Again, just a feature suggestion. I cannot think of any more, as many people already suggested many good ones. :)

      09/11/2012 at 11:54 am

First of all, I’m confused by your comment about the story alerts for chapterless fics. It shouldn’t really be a problem to get alerts for those because you’d only be getting one and probably only if you subscribe to the author who posted the fic. If someone actually follows a fic that’s marked complete, I doubt they’d get any more alerts unless the author posts a new chapter to it, and that’s probably a good thing. As for authors getting alerts that someone followed a chapterless fic, well…I don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s just one alert that doesn’t happen that often.

I’ve sometimes wanted a status such as “On Hiatus,” just to let people know not to expect a fic to be worked on quickly/as a main project. Then, people would know not to hold their breath. But I don’t see the point of an “Abandoned” status. In such a case, the fic should just be deleted.

AU and various timeline options have been available in big fandoms like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc. Might not be needed as much for smaller fandoms, or at least just canon and AU as basic options.

      • The Imaginatrix

        09/11/2012 at 6:55 pm

I think he’s talking about stopping people from following one-chapter stories and ones that are complete. I frankly agree. It would be nice if the follows were all deleted and blocked once a story was marked as complete. They are no longer necessary when the fic is finished. And then we wouldn’t have to go through our alerts to see which ones were completed. If I might add to this idea, I would suggest that if someone has alerted a multichapter story but not added it to their favourites list, that when the story was completed, it automatically moves from their alerts list to their favourites one. If the story’s also been favouritised, then the alert should simply be deleted.

I can’t even take you seriously once I saw you cussing and immaturity. If you want to be take seriously, then do try and refrain from swearing and explain yourself -calmly-. Otherwise you’re being immature and a hypocrite to boot too.

In my honest opinion, this whole drama with CU is already getting so old. No point beating a dead horse. Either you just go whine to someone else, move on from ffn, or, preferably, get the hell over it. I’m honestly amazed that Xing actually allowed this comment in, when there is no point to do so. I hope you don’t think that CU Supporter actually wrote Jessica’s “review”. Your reply sounds as if you do.

Several CU members or people in their forum who support them are getting the same “review” in their inboxes. Really not a smart move on “Jessica’s” part as her IP address can likely be traced and she can be banned across the board.

I agree that it’s really immature. Most of those who have been submitting “drive by” screeds against CU sound exactly the same. Bullies trying to bully the “bullies” with death threats. Who’s worse?

@yemi hikari: You’re so right. You can be an anon or even have many different pennames, but you can’t hide all of your traces. No one seemed to realize this fun little fact these days.

Tsk! I just wished this person hadn’t retort to spewing insults and using foul language. :/

    Authors vs Readers?

I may be all wet, but I think I see a pattern. Reading what each posting has said – how they react toward the changes, I suspect many of the complainers may be ‘readers’ & the ones that want the complainers to ‘take a hike’ may be ‘authors’. Being an avid reader myself, many of the changes have seriously cramped my style whereas if someone is mostly an author the changes being complained about wouldn’t be much more than a blip.

From what I’ve read & seen since I found this site in 12/2009, I know authors have had many irritating issues they’ve had to deal with for many years. Many of the improvements have made their life better. I’m all for a happy author:)

As a reader that has submitted exactly 9,886 reviews (on this site alone) starting in 12/2009 of which not one was negative toward the author about their writing skills, I’m not a complainer that has nothing better to do with my time & is looking to cause irritation to the masses. I’m not even hiding behind a fake name as csp4 is my actual account name. My “Favorite Stories” list shows at least 90% of all stories I’ve read since around mid 2010 which includes a few very poorly written fanfic that were never flamed by me. I’m only saying this to show I’m not one of the ‘freaks’ that lurk in the night looking to cause death & destruction.

That being said, & I can’t talk for anyone other than myself, I as a reader have wants & needs just exactly like everyone else. It seems that most if not all the serious complaints are for what was taken away not for anything a reader would demand to be added. They just want what they previously had, in any form possible. I would hope that the authors don’t think the wants & needs of the readers are worthless. I would also hope that the authors wouldn’t actually want me (csp4) & other readers like me to stay off this site & go somewhere else?

This seems to be the only place possible to air grievances, make suggestions or requests, or just plain vent. The only thing I’ve found on the ‘Forums’ is roleplay & what I suspect was the ‘headquarters’ for a very disturbing & large group on a witch hunt:( This is also a perfect way for the site administrators to find out what ALL people are thinking.

Whether or not there is actually a fight (for lack of another word) between authors & readers, this is what I see…..someone complains about a ‘taken away’ feature wanting it back. Another reads this complaint & because they themselves have no need for that feature it means the complaint & the complainer are frivolous & stupid. Afterall, if they themselves don’t need it then no one else should. See yourself in this description?

We are all in this together. The best way to do that is to accept we may have different requirements in life & fanfic & allow others their vent time.

Many authors are also readers and I dare say some of them are looking at these new changes as progress.

I read what you wrote and I would write a longer response, but my phone is acting up, so I can’t write a proper response.

All I can say is: there is a difference between complaining with how you feel about the changes and then complaining to the admins but calling them names and acting like a spoiled person. You can both have the same complaint, but I personal don’t like the way the latter of complainers ‘complain’. I’m not calling them stupid in any way, but honestly? They are giving me the impression that I don’t WANT them to get what they are asking for (possible or not; I don’t care) because of how they are acting.

Before I get to my response, CSP4, I would like to apologise for my somewhat harsh words yesterday. I am not usually so blunt, and I would rather not be seen to be so.
That said, my retort yesterday was not directed specifically at you, but at all of those who have complained about this issue. You argued your point above quite well, compared to, for example, Atem’sSisterAtea, who began her post with something along the lines of “Ugh! You admins can’t do anything right!” That was both unfair to the admins, who work their butts off keeping the site up-to-date with current demands and advances in technology, and completely uncalled-for.
I admit that I am an author. I am also a reader. Had I not been one, I would never have found this site to begin with. At the time the favourites and alerts lists were changed, I had barely exceeded 50 faves, and had about 30 alerts, so it wasn’t as much of an issue for me as far as the single-page thing was concerned. The Sort-By-Date-Added being the default was annoying, but the very blog post this thread is trailing behind told us that issue had been rectified.
In closing, I will repeat my sentiments from yesterday, though in a gentler manner. There are some things you should accept and adjust to. Life is full of things you can’t change, and an update to a website is hardly the most important one. Think on that for awhile. I’m not saying don’t tell the admins what you want changed or anything; like you said, that’s kinda what this blog is for. Just look at the bigger picture before you say something you can’t take back.

Responding to a group of bullies by calling them fags and making death threats is also bullying. I don’t see why this is being reported here instead of through the appropriate site channels, though. Surely it’s quite obvious that this person Jessica does not have the power to take down any forum on the site.

@Princess of Troy. Thank you for your help. Now I know exactly where it is. I remember before it was easy to find. Now it’s a little confusing till one gets used to the new setup around the site.

I’m glad there has been some type of filtering for authors added. However, filtering by each specific author doesn’t make much sense, especially if you have hundreds of stories and hundreds of authors. Perhaps it is better to have an option to sort alphabetically (in the same dropdown menu as sorting by dates and title) so that we can see easily see what stories the author has written.

i would greatly appreciate it if you people include an “Date Added” sort option in the public user account of FanFiction because I tend to look at the “Favorite Stories” section of fanfic users for stories.

I have a suggestion/compromise for the alerts and favorites list – increase the number of alerts/favorites per page to maybe 100 or 150 and add the ability to page through at the top as well as the bottom.

I get that people who have thousands of fics in their list are the reason we will never see our list on a single page again but for those of us who have less than 1,000, having more fics per page could make the feature more usable.

I also wish I could download or at the very least print out my list so I could reference it and maybe clean it up.

Since you are (probably) not going to put a sort on the alerts pages any time soon, what about an Unfollow button to remove an author/story from the alert list?

On the authors alers page- it is only listing the authors in date added order- would be an idea to have to option of selecting to so authors that begin with A, B, C… etc

possibly also allow sort by no of fics- so if an author has bemoved all their fics- you can delete them easier,

“On the authors alers page- it is only listing the authors in date added order- would be an idea to have to option of selecting to so authors that begin with A, B, C… etc” put your cursor over ‘Pen Name’ at the top of the list then click. In fact, all the headings can be clicked to put in 2 types of order. Only reason I know is I accidentally swiped my cursor over it & saw the little hand pointing:)

I have a question for the Administrators – is there a way to download my alerts lists to a spreadsheet? I would like to clean up my lists, do some maintenance on them, but the only 50 to a page has made it a near impossible task so the list gets longer even though I could likely delete quite a few fics if I could really look at it.

I completely understand why you won’t go back to the old format, but have you considered a compromise of maybe showing 100 items per page? Also it would be nice if I could change pages from the top of the list as well as the bottom.

I like that idea- as I copy & paste page by page into a spreadsheet to sort what has been completed, how long since last update etc…

Hi! I didn’t know where to say that so I’ll say it here : I think that in the moment , adding a ‘To Read’ list is fundamental. The number of fics is increasing everyday and it’s easier and easier to lose a story that you wanted to read. That would also means a lot less of “Please help me find this story” stories.
I hope you will take it into consideration.

    Jaymili.

    To Whom it may concern,
I am not getting E-Mails Updating me when The Authors that I put in my Alert Subscription list add A new story or chapter.
When I look in the listing in the categories to see how many stories are in that category it looks different for instance it will say
1.7K instead of a actual number.

Changing the Favourites and Reviews Filter to the Updates category is so unintuitive that I have to question the sanity and commonsense of all involved. Until I searched through the Site updates section I had no idea that this had happened and simply thought they’d been (even more idiotically) removed. And I’m an experienced user of the site. God knows how newbies will cope!

Please tell me by what logical process Update times have anything to do with the number of Favourites and Reviews a story has received? These provide a (by no means infallible I admit) guide to the popularity, and perhaps quality of stories. Over all time. For those of us whose stories are complete, and who have been lucky/good enough to get a fair number, they are an important means by which our stories get read. So making it considerably more difficult and confusing for readers to search by this method could have a catastrophic effect on the number of hits we get.

Taking the filters off the page view by default was bad enough, but this exceeds all bounds of stupidity, annoyance and inconvenience.

As if it isn’t already enough of a struggle with Updating being the dominant factor in what’s likely to get people’s attention. A tendency to write shorter chapters and update even more often will be encouraged. How’s that supposed to make managing the site easier?

Please put it back like it was!
