Sorry to be a bother, and I apologize for this not being at all related to your post, but this really needs to be addressed better. I really would like to know why this person’s latest chapter is still up after I’ve reported it. It is not the the first time this person has posted announcements to her story, which last I checked, was not allowed on the site:

Perhaps this is a bug: if you have someone yelling and you add several letters that are the same–example: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!–they break apart to make two words instead of one, sometimes more depending on how many you have. Every great once in a while I have a character yell someone else’s name and I add extra vowels–like the O in no–for emphasis. The same happens when people review or PM me. I remember the words used to just be deleted altogether–which is just as annoying–so if it’s a bug, I hope it gets fixed. If its intentional, then I hope you decide to change it

I am trying to make a DocX connection with a friend of mine. I have done it before, so I know how the system works. However, my friend and I have both done our parts of the connection, and it’s still listed as “pending”. Could this please be rectified soon? My friend is in college and can only look at my document on the week-ends, as she lives at her dorm during the week, and even then she’s busy with stuff.

I just tried to post a review and I got a box that said that this review had already been written. It didn’t make much sense to me since it wasn’t like “Please Upd8″ or anything.

Thanks for all the hardwork, FF.net staff. I can see you guys are swamped. But… if I may point out (if this hasn’t been already):

Something seems to be wrong with the Beta Reader profiles. Everytime new beta readers create profiles, the tag always comes up. When you click ‘save’, the profile comes up with those tags sometimes 20 times with every space.

I’ve manually gone in by hand and deleted them, but everytime I update my profile, they just keep coming back.

Thanks for the attention and hard work! Hope you’re all doing well.

I have a question that I’ve hunted all over the site and haven’t found an answer for, so I hope by asking here that someone can tell me. What I want to know is, are round robin fics allowed on this site? I know other interactive stories aren’t allowed on here, but are round robins considered interactive if it’s just a small group of writers working on it? Been in a couple of different fandoms where about maybe five or six writers have activated a single account that they all have access to, then they post round robins under those accounts. They don’t solicit help from the readers or anything, it’s all kept within their group, but I thought at one time that round robin stories, even ones that were completed, were not allowed on this site, that they were still considered a form of interactive fic. Hope someone can help and thanks in advance for any input!

As I understand it, ‘interactive’ means where the reviewers contribute to the story, eg. where the reviewers create characters or where the reviewers supply plot threads. So a story written by multiple people and posted under one account would *not* be against the rules. Collaborative is not interactive. I’m definitely not an admin or anything, but there are lots of fanfics produced collaboratively and it would seem odd to forbid any cowritten work!

        11/20/2012 at 7:17 pm

I thought interactive meant second person fics. So if the main character is YOU, the reader, then it was considered interactive. A ton of fics in the Pokemon section (and quite a few also) would be considered interactive if something like submitting your own character makes would make it one.

        11/20/2012 at 7:36 pm

Submit your own character IS against the rules, only if the characters are sent via review, if they’re sent via PM or other then it is OK.
Second person is also against the rules, but not for being interactive, just for being second person.

I see that a lot in the Zelda section myself.

You know what else I’ve been seeing? People using the chaptering feature to post announcements about when they’re going to update, like this one here. I’ve reported this one story several times now, and nothing’s been done about it. :/

        11/20/2012 at 8:39 pm

Thanks everyone for the responses, you’ve cleared things up for me! I guess I was thinking that since a round robin relied on the collaboration of multiple authors, it was still considered an interactive fic, since the plot of the story is contingent on whomever comes up with what. But since the two groups are not joinable unless invited and they don’t solicit help from the readers, it’s not interactive work and is okay on the site. I asked because my friend is a member of one of the groups and I hate to see her or the others get into trouble for posting something that’s not allowed on the site.

When I hear the words “interactive fiction,” I think of games or stories in which the reader has some control over what the characters do or choose. Like “Choose Your Own Adventure” or text adventures.

However, if the story is written in second person from the point of view of the character as an artistic choice, and readers have no way to determine an outcome or tell the character what to do, I think it is okay. Then, it is still standard, static fiction – just with the second person format.

Click on the little blue triangle in the corner of the ads, and go to the bottom of the page to report the website for adult content. Perhaps they will get their act together aftering being warned by Google for numerous violations of their policies.

Are you ever going to clarify the interactive rule to make it clear whether “2nd-person POV” is just an common symptom of a banned interactive fic, or whether the POV itself is banned? (And if the latter, what do you have against 2nd person POV? It’s a legit artistic choice.)

        11/25/2012 at 11:50 pm

This is why the disable anonymous reviews option was good to have, especially in bigger fandoms – people worried about anonymous abuse could block them all and not have to moderate. Now, people who want to anonymously flame will know that it is likely the writer will see it even if it goes through moderation. Most people who anonymously review aren’t flamers and I like the chance to get anon reviews myself, but for the peace of mind of people worried about it, many users found it good to have the option.

      11/24/2012 at 3:25 pm

Its best that they not bring it back. Disabling anonymous reviews won’t stop someone who is serious about flaming you, they can easily create sock puppet accounts. It takes much longer to get rid of a signed flame then it does an unsigned one.

On top of this, there are some writers out there who will block anyone who leaves a negative review. Some don’t mind their negative grammar being pointed out to them, while others will throw a gasket if even that is mentioned. I’ve been blocked once or twice when all I mentioned was grammar and technical issues that needed to be fixed.

*shrug* ‘Tis their right. Not necessarily very mature, but writers should have the right to block people if they want since on this site the story pages are basically the writer’s own.

        12/11/2012 at 3:52 pm

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t think censoring other people’s words counts as a right. There is a difference between a right and a privilege. Being able to block signed accounts is a privileged that many people abuse. When a persons rights come in, it is in reference to whether it was within their rights to actually block the person. For example, if someone does flame you, it is within your right to block them so they do not harass you. If someone is honestly leaving critique to help the writer and said writer blocked them, it is not within their rights to do so, but they do it anyways.

I’m also going to point out the fact that FFnet is not a blog. With a blog, all the stories are kept in an individual’s private area and archive, but here the stories are all part of one big archive. Thus while one can argue that the story and review pages on a blog belong to the writer, this is not the case here. Only the writing actually belongs to the writer. Their privileges are limited to reporting signed reviews, deleting their own stories and deleting anonymous reviews. I say privileges because there are sites out there that only the admins can delete the stories and anonymous reviews can’t be deleted at all.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        12/31/2012 at 1:27 am

This is in response to a comment about people’s rights to block others and censorship of opinion. For some reason, I cannot respond directly to it, but comments past that are not relevant to this line of discussion.

Just want to say that I disagree with this opinion. It is an author’s right to block whomever they wish. Indeed, it is anyone’s right to block whomever they choose. Regardless of the content and diplomacy of the posting. As mentioned already, author’s story pages and created content belong to them insofar as moderation is concerned, at least to a certain extent. Admin always have final say, but fellow readers and writers really cannot tell others what to do. It is akin to personal e-mail. I can ignore or delete whatever I want without repercussion. That does not inherently mean censorship, either. I am not restricting anyone’s right to free speech/press. I am merely choosing not to see/hear it.

As for blogs, stories are exactly the same thing. This is not an apples/oranges issue. Even forum threads fall into the category of Web content hosted on some site that gives the creator moderation privileges. I wish I could delete signed reviews sometimes. For instance, the ones that tell me how to write my own story. In my opinion, it’s one thing to say, “If I wrote the fic, I’d do it this way.” Quite another to say I left something out or didn’t do it right when the reader cannot see the cohesion of the whole or the effect I was trying for. If they think I didn’t do a good job, they can easily write something themselves.

In short, authors should be allowed to delete signed as well as unsigned reviews, and blocking people is not an infringement on the rights of the one who was blocked.

Okay, posting this once again so it can be seen because searching for stories will be so much easier with this option. Add a dual-genre filter, or a filter that can remove certain genres to the browsing section. The dual thing has been done with the search, so why not for the browsing?
I get that coding this stuff is definitely difficult and time consuming, but can’t you get at least one of these in soon? It would be awesome!
And just a side note, having an OC option for characters would be cool. You know, finding stories that use their own characters, instead of butchering the ones of the universe.

Also the abusive review left by HalfVampire2 on http://www.fanfiction.net/r/6441253/1/1/ is still on even after several months. It’s a K rated story so this review is very inappropriate for little children. Her profile is here: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3801508/HalfVampire2.

    11/28/2012 at 1:40 am

Hello there. I have a suggestion for a feature that would be insanely useful. I think y’all should have an option to exclude genres or characters while browsing for stories. For example, if I want stories about a certain character or characters, but I don’t want romance, there should be an option to exclude it. Or say I want a romantic story about a certain character, but I don’t want them to be paired up with a character I dislike. Then, I could choose to exclude that character (or multiple characters, preferably) from the list of stories while I’m browsing. I think y’all should implement this. Or a combination or both, to exclude genres and characters, if I wanted to. Again, this would be INSANELY useful. Y’all should definitely consider it.

Oh wow, I didn’t realize other people had JUST suggested it. Seriously. I just thought of this while browsing just now, and I didn’t look to check the comments. ._. But it’s cool that other people think the same way! All the more reason to implement the feature.

I’m sure this feature request has been made before, but I’ll mention it again. I’d like the ability to be able to follow an author in just a specific category. There is one author whose work I enjoy, but she writes for multiple fandoms, many of which I am not familiar with. It’d be great if I could receive an alert for a new story just for the fandom(s) I’m interested in. Thanks.

    • yemi hikari

      11/30/2012 at 3:46 am

Actually, this request hasn’t been made before. If they implement this it would be nice if you also got an alert for “new fandoms” that aren’t on your watch list for an author. It would take time, but be nice.

      • tooM

        11/30/2012 at 5:53 am

I don’t think fandom is quite the right word since it refers to the fans themselves more or less instead of the actual category. Though I do like the idea. It gets tiring when I see 12 new stories from games/anime that I’ll never care for and the sole reason I alerted them was because of something completely different.

Though I think the new category/fandom thing would be unnecessary since it covers the general author alert. I get what you mean with the suggestion though.

    • Christine

      12/01/2012 at 1:24 pm

This is a great suggestion! As an author, I always feel kind of guilty whenever I write for fandoms that my most frequent readers aren’t interested in or familiar with, so it would be wonderful if the people who have me on Author Alert could receive notifications for only the fandoms they’re interested in. I’m not sure how this could be implemented, but I hope the admins consider it.

        12/02/2012 at 4:00 pm

Never feel guilty for writing. :)

I don’t mind getting alerts for the fandoms I’m not interested in. It’s only that I tend to get my hopes up when I think it’s a new story for my fandom then learn it’s not, lol. I’m glad the authors I like are keeping the creative juices flowing. But I do hope it’s a feature the admins will consider for the future.

        12/02/2012 at 4:13 pm

I like this suggestion too! It’s easy enough to ignore alerts that come from authors I like for fandoms I’m less interested in, but it would be cool to have this feature. Perhaps if it was implemented by exclusion rather than inclusion – ie. “I want all story alerts from this author, except for stories from fandoms I specify”. That would mean that the subscriber would still get alerts when the author started writing in new fandoms.

I’m a reader and writer of FanFiction.net, and I love everything about it, except I don’t like it when you’ve got an Anonamyss reviewer, because I recieved a nasty review, and not being able to remove or report them for abuse, leaves them to leave as much abuse as they want, knowing you won’t be able to do anything about it, and they get to troll you. There’s really no way of removing the troll from my review archive, though I’ve tried, it just won’t go.
If you would maybe take the time to find a solution to this problem, it would be much appreicated.

I’ve a question. Is there any way for me to browse multiple categories (i.e. universes) and be able to use parameters like word count, favorites, etc., without having to search a “keyword”? The search function is nice, but having to use a keyword is restrictive. The browser function is pretty much useless, since I have to pick a category, meaning I already know what I want to find.

      12/07/2012 at 8:27 am

Yeah, that’s why I’ve been trying my best at pushing the idea of multiple category inclusion/exclusion options in the browsing section. I have the same problem as you. However, until they get around to dong so, here’s a little tip to use the search as a browsing:

Search the keyword ‘a’. It will bring up pretty much every fic on the site for you. Go to ‘Advanced options’ (next to search bar) and change ‘search by: relevance’ to ‘update date’. Then you can choose the categories you like as you please and voila! A new browsing section.

      Hope this helped!

    5. Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc.

Is it intended to ban all interactive fic, of which those things after the colon are common symptoms?
Or, is it intended to ban all of those listed items, point-blank?

Second person narration is not inherently interactive, and it would be nice if the rule could be clarified to indicated whether it is banned outright or only in service of an interactive fic.

It’s time to get back to answering abuse reports again, and I’m referring to offenders of the real person fiction rule more than anything. I don’t think you guys understand the severity of the situation. It’s not getting better, it gets worse and worse, this “One Direction” craze. I have never seen such abuse of the real person fiction rule as I have seen with these One Direction fans (not even Justin Bieber fans were this bad), and they have several fanfiction sites to post on as it is! There’s no reason for them to be on the site doing this! It’s almost like some kind of joke, like they’re doing this just to irritate people.

Not only do these so-called authors abuse the misc. categories, but they’re going into actual specified categories, usually smaller ones because they think the authors/readers of those categories are too stupid or insignificant to say anything. The attitude of these violating “authors” and their fans are sickening, they’re downright vicious is what it is, no matter how civil and sensitive in your approach you are. PLEASE get back to managing these reports, or have you given up and are letting everybody fend for themselves? If that’s the case, then there’s no reason to have a “Report Abuse” feature, now is there? I’m sick and tired of submitting report after report (I’ve had unanswered reports since August, not just within the last few days) and NOTHING is being done. It’s maddening. If you are working on some kind of solution to better deal with this problem, at least give us some sort of update instead of letting us think you’re purposefully ignoring us and are just giving up.

Please, please don’t wait until some next “purge” to delete these stories like you did this year. It’s not right to wait until some once in a while purge. It only makes the offending authors more indignant and determined, and they repost the stuff all over again and then some. Then the less intelligent ones think these rules you’re enforcing are some kind of “new rules”, like the thing with the MA rated stories. You need to be enforcing these rules on a regular basis. Is it a staff problem? Things had been going so well this past summer, every single one of my reports (and apparently other peoples as well) were being answered. What happened? Just let us know SOMETHING. I honestly feel the urge to retch when I set so much as one eye upon the poor Misc. categories, they’re so atrociously abused. The One Direction fans honestly think they’re invincible or something, they’re just relentless.

I just sent an abuse report via email, but I’m also commenting here in hopes for a bit more of a boost, considering I’ve had various other unanswered abuse reports since August. I’m not reviewing these stories to inform these authors of the problem, because I’ll either be ignored (considering some of these postings are more than a year old) or I’ll be met with needless hostility. You are the one with the power, and can accomplish what my reviews cannot. I beseech you to please look into my concerns and do what needs to be done.

I checked out the category for the 2001 movie “The Others” and I am shocked by how it’s been abused and misused. There’s several stories there that have utterly no relevance to the category. Some are real person fictions, some are original fictions, some are for different movies entirely and some entries are completely copyrighted material, word for word. I would really appreciate it if you could get around to deleting these stories very soon and clean that category up. I also think you should change the title of the category, as it simply says “Others.” I assume some of these people got confused by the title when in fact some of them should’ve in fact used the “Misc.” categories instead.

At any rate, instead of “Others”, the movie category should be altered to “The Others, 2001″ so there will be less confusion.

This is the list of rule breakers in the category.

This story is for a 2003 film called “The Dreamers” and should at least be in Misc. Movies instead.

This is a real person fiction with the band One Direction.

This story is for the film “Hick”, or it is an original fiction inspired by that film, but at any rate it is not relevant to “The Others”.

    This is an original fiction.

This is for the movie “Troop Beverly Hills and should at least be placed in Misc. Movies instead.

This is for the movie “Ever After” and should be placed in that category.

    This is an original fiction.

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6300539/1/One-Word-s-Meaning

This is a poem taken from author Neal Shusterman that the fanfic author OutlawsAngel wanted to “share” or some nonsense. This author also has three other copyrighted entries published in the archive.

    Two quick suggestions:

    1. Is there any way to add a “download all PMs” feature to the PM system? I have a lot of really engaging conversation with fellow FFNet authors through it and I don’t want all my PMs to disappear. Especially because our messages are so long they often get throttled by the “this message is too long, please visit the website” in the email alerts.

    2. Can you allow multiple reviews by registered users per chapter? So far people have been intentionally getting around the system by reviewing anonymously. This can be really frustrating especially if an author decides to delete all their chapters and start again, because then you can’t sent multiple reviews.

    Cheers.

I’m still wondering if and when there will be some kind of action taken about the situation in the Miscellaneous categories at FanFiction. Pretty much everything in Misc. Books is original fiction, and the authors defend themselves by saying “That’s what Misc. Books is for!” Many other authors use this category as a place for blogs, journals, personal announcements and such.

I wish the site would crack down and start deleting some of the offenders, or perhaps make a general announcement of some kind to remind authors that FFNet is for fanfiction and FictionPress is for original fiction. Maybe all authors posting in the Misc. categories should be required to put the titile of the book somewhere in the summary?

The Document Manager loves to mess me up EVERY time. I manually had to insert line breaks, and even after I pressed Save like five times, it STILL won’t show up on the page. I don’t want to keep contacting Support about it for EVERY chapter I write.
