Characters, Search, Site Theme, and Lots more…

20 Mar

[UPDATE: Please see new blog post for compatibility update with list of resolved and pending issues. ]

Search engine is now 4 character aware and users can filter through all of them one by one. Please note the browsing part with four character support is coming soon.

We have also pushed out a major revision of the site theme but also  expect some growing pains as result. Please let us know of any place that is exhibiting unexpected behavior. Refinement of the new theme will slowly roll out over the next few weeks and we want your feedback.

If the changes reduced your font size to unacceptable small or large levels, you need to  provide us with the browser version, device os, and screen resolution so we can upgrade the theme to be compatible with all device types. Compatibility is extremely difficult but we usually get it right after initial feedback.

For the story settings we want to clarify that the ordering of the 4 characters is irrelevant to the search engine and the upcoming browsing enhancements. All four characters are equally weighted.

Changes:

  • Search engine now able to filter through 4 characters
  • Site theme updated with mostly subtle changes.

Fixed

  • Tons of small fixes and too many to list.

UPDATED

Pending issues with fix coming:

I’m normally not one to comment or post when a change is made, but, I find myself agreeing with a lot of my fellow members. I read a lot and I mean a lot of fan fiction and this site has been my favorite from the start.

But I must admit that some of your changes has had me looking at other sites…

The removal of some of the more mature stories, the change in layouts yet again and the font, could you please go back – reboot to let’s say two days ago – then the font and layout would be fixed at least. As for the mature contents how about something asking for age consent before reading a specific story. Some amazing stories have been removed it would be great to see some of them have a chance to see light again!

I know that managing this amazing site can’t be easy, especially trying to please everyone so thank you for your hard work. Just keep in mind that not everything needs to change.

I agree with you, that a reboot to how the site looked two days would be the best thing for the site. Too many people are unhappy with how the site looks now. Going back to how it looked before would be great.

Agree that not everything needs to change. For instance, story stats. I used to be able to click on the column headings of ‘views’ and ‘visitors’ to see what my top 3 most read stories were. I can’t do that now.

The font is super small now. It’s hurting my eyes. I use Google Chrome. My screen resolution is 1366 x 768 (as recommended by HP)

I have no problems, I really like the way the layout looks with the updates. Agree witht he mature content, perhaps, age consent / agreement on some mature story?

I haven’t had any problems either, though mainly I’m just here for the stories. Along those lines, I’ll say I really like the continuing availability of a white or black background—the latter is easier on the eyes.

I don’t often read mature stories of any variety, but I do think an age-consent setup might help in some capacity. I mean, if a kid really wants to read that stuff they’re going to find a way to do it, whether on the site or another, but something like a consent requirement seems like basic CYA—there would be no room for a “clicked by accident” excuse when there’s a prompt warning that the reader is about to read a work unsuitable for those under whatever the age requirement will be. This would also help give the writers a bit of leeway, so they aren’t biting their nails and wondering if an implied mature scene is somehow too mature anyway, or the language being used in a confrontation scenario is too adult; the current ratings system is adequate, but kind of vague as to how far is too far.

As for more mature sequences, well, material that is gratuitously graphic just flat has no place on the site and should still be refused and deleted; there are other places for that, so those writers can go there. However, I’ll point out that a detailed romantic scene, when written properly, contributes to the interaction and exploration of the involved characters’ personalities and really shouldn’t be truncated under a blanket heading to pacify parents who use a computer as a babysitter. So a content warning/age check wouldn’t be carte blanche, obviously, but it would still offer a buffer for both the writers and site admin.

It might also be good for a warning/age check to apply to an entire story or a single chapter within a story. I know of several chaptered stories that have just one mature scene in them, yet the entire story had to be placed into the mature category, and the authors were less than thrilled by that. I do think writers could be trusted to handle the warning/age check, too, because the consequence would be simple—add a warning about that one chapter yourself or have the whole story moved to the content rating appropriate for that one chapter (or removed entirely). And since it would be too tedious for the writer of a story centered around mature themes to constantly put up warnings just to otherwise have a lower rating (plus, readers wouldn’t have the patience to constantly agree and would nag for the author to move the story appropriately), I think it would be something that more or less policed itself.

@SanzOgirl – how would you stop children from just clicking the “yes, I’m old enough” button? That’s the problem advocates of MA never seem willing to address; the fact that anyone, of any age, can lie online. To my way of thinking, the site admins are quite right to stand firm on this point until someone can come up with a foolproof method of preventing ten-year-olds from accessing inappropriate material. And since you want to bring in MA, seems to me the onus is on you to work out how to do this.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Personally, I like it that fictionpress and ffnet are reasonably family friendly. There are plenty of other sites offering higher rated material, so you don’t need to feel you’re missing out, right?

I just don’t understand why they don’t take our opinons and wishes into account. There has been an overwhelming majority that don’t like the newest batch of changes for this site. So many people would prefer it be returned to how it was 48 hours ago. Not only was it easier to read and caused less strain on your eyes but it simply worked out better than it does now. An extra window just to allow us to favourite a story, when just two days ago all I had to do was click a button and it registered my favourite. No extra windows needed. That was perfect and didn’t need to be changed.

Also, the new font size and the inability to make it smaller is also a problem. Why don’t they just give us an option to go back to the font size it was before. How it looks now causes to much strain on a lot of peoples eyes. I’ve spent the last four hours nursing a headache I got from reading for just over an hour on this site. How is that a good thing? And I know I’m not the first one to have similar complaints.

It’s been less than a year since the last major overhaul of the site. There’s a saying that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Well let tell you all something, the site wasn’t broken and it deffinately did NOT need fixing.

Xing and his team should take what were saying into account. I understand updating software and making sure everything runs smoothly but the changes done to the site, at least as far as I can see, were merely cosmetic and completely unnecessary.

Didn’t you post the exact same wording in the other thread? There’s no need to repeat yourself; if they’re reading the blog, they’ll see it wherever you put it, and if they’re not, it’s wasted effort. And frankly, from my point of view, it’s a little tiresome to come to this thread thinking there’s something new, only to find the same tired old argument I’ve just answered a couple of minutes ago.

I’m sorry if the new site gives you a headache, but like I said, for me it’s an improvement. So fixing it for you will make it worse for me. Perhaps Xing can find a middle ground which will help both of us.

Please give us back the original font size. The current font size is too big and it gives me a headache. At least just revert the font size back to the original if you can’t do anything else.

They have shrunk the font size but now it seems like Arial Font is the standard for the site instead of the old Verdana font. Now if only they could switch the font style back to Verdana, which I believe was what it was before the update, than it would really take care of a lot of the issues readers have.

    Hello admins.

First of all, thank you for all you do. I have a few comments/questions:

    1. Is the new 4-character search/browse feature going to reflect characters added by the writer in Properties even after a story posts? Right now, I don’t see that in effect despite adding a C3 to an existing story. Am I doing something wrong?

    2. As for font issues…no worries by me. To those in pain, try altering the default fonts of your computer’s browser. Most if not all Windows programs can do that to make it more user friendly. It just requires that you play around with it for a bit to figure out which fonts and sizes work for you. I actually like the new font. It’s clean and I can zoom in or out at will via my browser (Firefox).

    3. What’s up with Alpha only lists for Favorites and Follows? I always respond to all feedback (it’s common courtesy), but the alpha-only list means sifting for date added and some lovely person who actually took the time to feedback might go accidentally unnoticed, Please restore the list by Date Added chrono feature, if possible.

    4. Ratings: It’s my personal belief that any website with M-rated material or more should be prefaced with an age-of-consent sign-off entry page. It would save everyone grief. Writers could write with their imagination “set free” as this site claims to allow without fear of being reported or worse, having a story eliminated without a chance to alter. As a long-time fanfic writer, I can tell you that the burden of protecting children used to be the parent’s job. What ever happened to that idea?

Moreover, the current guidelines are too general to be meaningful, especially as it pertains to the written depiction of sexual activity or violence. When one considers the level of real life violence to which a child is exposed on a daily basis, the idea that reading a fictional story is a corrupting influence is absurd. Erotica (I hate the term smut bc it implies that sex is dirty which it’s not) sits on the public library shelf in most libraries. It’s called adult literature, but it explores erotic (i.e. sexual love) themes. Why is that ok but MA stories online are considered corrupting because a parent is either too ignorant, too lazy or too unwilling to hear their kid moan and groan about online limits? I know for a fact that 13 year olds are sexting with photos these days. Is fanfic to blame? I don’t think so. Translating something you read into action without visuals requires a fair degree of intelligence and reading comprehension. The more likely culprits are the visually oriented websites where intelligence and reading skills are unnecessary and a visual demonstration is de rigueur. Dare I say YT? I suggest making your ratings explicit instead of having writers guess at what “expicit” means.

    That’s all for now.

      1. It will reflect the added characters as the search already does. Tested it with one of my already published stories.

      4. I’m bothered by the fact you actually said that M rated material should have the same age verification that Ma material should have. You’re pretty much saying that we should block any young reader from getting their hands on said material despite the fact many parents do allow their children who are fourteen or fifteen to read 16+ stuff.

While it is true some children are exposed to the level of violence you find in an Ma rated book on a daily basis, lets face the fact that most are not. It is also true that children can find erotic material easily on library and book store shelves. Even if a parent allows the child to go to the library and check out books on their own they are still able to easily peruse through the books and say… no, this one is going back.

It’s different on the net. On the net you check out a story and instantly read it, so how are parents supposed to peruse the stories their children check out before they read them when it comes to fanfiction? Not only does this require twenty-four seven surveillance on the parents parts, it defeats the purpose of children being old enough to trust on the net.

The problem is two fold. First, parents aren’t taking issue with their kids finding M rated material, they’re taking issue with their kids finding Ma material in material that is supposed to be M rated. Publishers and game makers get a lot of flack for not properly labeling the material age wise, so why shouldn’t these people who labeled the stories as M despite being Ma?

Second, Ma content could get the site blocked at a good deal of libraries both public and school as well as loose advertising revenue from certain companies pulling out. As I pointed out, libraries at least are able to recognize that while a parent can have control over what their kids bring home from the library, it is harder to control what they find on the net.

My one big concern is the Document Manager area. Before, it used to have some blues and grays threaded into the design, which broke up the glaring white. Now that everything is white, pretty much, it’s very hard to look at. I prefer typing up my chapters in Doc Manager, but now I cannot because the white hurts my eyes. It’s irritating.

I find the new layout of too-big buttons mixed with too-small fonts to be really headache inducing. And WHY, for the love of god, is the Search function now off to the side as a little search bar and can’t be right-clicked and opened in a new tab/window? No offense, but that’s one of the dumbest changes I think I’ve ever seen. ESPECIALLY since the search function is likely used quite frequently by users. Same with the new drop-down menus for the Browse/Just In/etc.. menus. That’s completely unessesary and a pain for those of us who use laptops or have small screens.

Please go back to the previous layout. It was perfectly fine the way it was. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The site theme wasn’t ‘broken’ and it certainly didn’t need fixing.

Still haven’t figured out what a “Site Theme” may be. Other than excessively large boxes for your filter selections at the head of each titles list page, nothing seems very different.

Would have preferred you hadn’t changed the fonts – it still seems a little bigger than formerly, and does not respond to my attempts to change the size in ‘view’.

Best improvement, and the only one I’d have suggested, would be to allow some way to lock in the alphabetical display, rather than by popularity, on the 9 main fandoms pages. It’s a pain in the neck to keep having to go up and reselect ‘all’ each time you back out of a fandom and onto the main page for that category again.

If, as I do, you occasionally check several smaller fandoms, it can send one rocketing half a column away the day someone uploads 6 or 7 stories.

I guess I missed the update notice where you removed the ability to sort the Traffic Stats (and Legacy Traffic Stats) by their individual columns? It’s not a big thing, but it’s a meaningful one if you’re trying to see which stories are dead in the water, which are “trending”, etc., and have a large catalog. I have 70-ish stories and find it annoying. People with 100+ plus must be pulling out their hair. Or maybe it’s just me.

So, is this something that’s going to be fixed, or is this how stats are going to go from now on?

I would appreciate it very much if I could actually include a view all the history reviews that I had done in fanfiction. For the sake of reminiscence and memorabilia.

Also including a function öf a “Date Added” sorting option in the public users page… to know new added stories in users that I’m following on their favorite section. For less time consuming and effort of looking stories, and instead looking to authors that have alike taste of stories as yours.

I haven’t found any issues with the new set up except for one. When I list my characters in my stories, the list that produces isn’t in the order I selected them in. Is that normal? Other than that, the new set up is great. Keep up the good work.

Also, as stated above, I think the age consent would be a good idea. There are a lot of adults, myself included, that read stories on this site.

@Mary L Davis – regarding the age consent, have you any suggestions on how to enforce it? Anyone can tick a box saying they’re over 14, which is all you have to do in LiveJournal. So how might it be made 100% foolproof?

Hey. I just wanted you all to know that the four-character selections aren’t working quite as intended. The data summaries in the searches still show only two characters, and in crossover fiction, it defaults to being two characters from the first of the two crossover genres. I haven’t seen a way to change the priority listings so it doesn’t auto-sort the characters into ‘This story’ and then ‘this second story’.

As an example, one of my fics is a crossover, and instead of showing the two most important characters as the two on the list, it shows the second and third most important characters, leaving out the first because the story he’s from is listed as the secondary.

I can come up with stopgap fixes for this, but it’d be nice if we could prioritize the most important of the four characters, or show all four searchable characters in the summary data.

      03/27/2013 at 7:13 pm

If you bothered to read the post you would know that they haven’t made that update as of yet. They started off by giving the writers the ability to add the characters to their stories and then they took the search engine and made it recognize the stories as having all four characters. The inclusion of all four characters in the summary will come when they add the second two characters to the search system.

All of that is great, but I just have a small request. The search option is off to the side. Could you move it towards everything else on the left? Could you please change that back?

Will we ever be able to have more than two fandoms able to crossover? I see this problem all the time, authors try to crossover more than two and since there’s no category for it they either have to choose two to submit or submit it in just one fandom.

And now, I am a fan of this big crossover starring four fandoms, and that means I gotta browse like seven categories of crossovers, which takes a lot of time, and is kinda annoying.

I am SO glad you are allowing 4 characters now. Thank you for that update!! But I wish all 4 were visible from all pages and not just the first 2 alphabetically. Also, this is less of an issue… but I also wish you could maybe choose the order in which the characters appear.

I have sent an email to the given address on this site’s help link, but have not received a reply yet. I’m not entirely sure how else to contact the administrators of this site to ask for assistance, therefore I am replying to this particular message as a way to contact you.

From what I see, this site is doing it’s very best to fix a lot of technical issues, so I would like to inquire about another issue. The FanFiction rules and guidelines state that stories written using the second person/you format are not allowed. I am curious why.

You state that your site is a place for aspiring authors to “unleash their imagination and let their words flow” and this type of rule goes against that. In a way this is can be perceived as false advertising. A ‘reader-insert’ type story is written to give the readers the feeling that they are a part of the story. I see no harm in trying to expand that portion of creation, as those sort of published novels are few and far between, but I have found myself stifled instead. Moreover, while you suffocate that portion of imagination and creation, certainly not letting those words flow, I have seen no progress to stop the group calling themselves “Critics United”. But I do not wish to digress from the main issue presented.

Second person/you formatted stories are just as legitimate as first and third person. If you are going to ban one format, then ban the rest. But then you’ll need to just get rid of the site entirely, which would be a shame as this place is so wonderful. This site has opened the opportunity for people like myself to communicate and meet others with shared interests. It has also given aspiring authors the chance to test their characters and practice other forms of writing.

I ask that you please take the time to consider this argument and change that rule. It will be beneficial to both this site and its target audience.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from someone soon.

” A ‘reader-insert’ type story is written to give the readers the feeling that they are a part of the story. I see no harm in trying to expand that portion of creation, as those sort of published novels are few and far between, but I have found myself stifled instead.”

That right there is the problem with second person narrative, it is interactive by its very nature. It can be jarring, particularly if not done right. The site admins also likely don’t want minors reading stories where they’re in relationships that are glorified as being romantic when they are not, not to mention those kind of stories are painful to read.

You also complain about your creativity being stifled and that it is hindering the expansion of the second person narrative in published work. This tells me you’ve done no research into actual second person narrative writing, otherwise you would know the real reason there are so few books published is because it is the hardest of the three point of views to write from and get right. The real reason you want to write in second person also seems to be because it is different, not because your story really would benefit from you writing from second person point of view. Most stories don’t need second person narrative and throwing something like second person narrative in just to spice up your story is bad writing.

it’s about Characters. I got a problem that annoyed me. If the previous form I can set who the first character and who the second character. then now can’t.
    example:

I wrote Sasuke x Naruto. I WANT Sasuke first then Naruto (Sasuke U & Naruto U) but, when I save the properties form, I just got “Naruto U & Sasuke U”

and the other example. I wrote for Kiba and Sakura. I WANT “Kiba I & Sakura H” but what I get is “Sakura H & Kiba I”

Really, that’s annoyed me, SO MUCH. Please do something as soon as possible!

    Thank you!

It seems you like many others have missed the point that the character tags are not meant to indicate the pairings in a story, they are there to indicate who the main characters are. That being said, it does not matter which order the main characters are listed in either as the reader just needs to know who the main characters are.

Now that the character change is in place, its great, but it’s kind of hard to separate the character names. Could you put commas or the & like before??

I feel like I’m being really picky, but when you type something in the search and hit enter on the keyboard, it goes to the story/forum/writer/community drop-down. It doesn’t actually enter the search. Do you know why and maybe fix it?

arł do ziemi, spojrzał. Była owo zardzewiała,
żelazna mitenka, breathlessness w jakiej tkwiły
    nadal wyschnięte palce plus
nadgarstek. W związku z tym faktyczny stan rzeczy ktoś próbował,
pomyślał przed chwilą. Nie pył terminu na roz.

If you are going to let us use four characters in the filter area at least include a spot to exclude four characters, or hell ‘exclude all’ besides what I selected as to what I’m looking for. I don’t need over a thousand stories about characters I’m not interested in reading fanfictions about. Seriously what was wrong with just two characters? Did there need to be stories that pop up because I couldn’t exclude one character that is in the four character slots? So now besides length I also have to pay attention to who did the author put in the filter because they are trying to get a broader audience; because lets face it the summary doesn’t tell much about the story, or “I suck at summaries”.

Naruto is a good example of how your new filter system sucks. You have multiple character slots now which means you need to remove the unnecessary possibilities. This should include, but not limited to, the ‘Teams’, Akatsuki, false names such as ‘Yondaime U.’.

The term ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ comes to mind. The only solace I have right now is that I don’t have try to use this new system to find the stories I’m watching or have favorited. I just have to go based off their titles alone. Hey there is something you could fix and here is an easy fix add the summary or an option to see the summary.

I know this is maybe the wrong place as i see the last coment is from the 04/15/2013. But i´m now very unhappy and i have to write you on this message about your change on fanfiction.net. I´ve looked on the side with crossed eyes as you make changes and changes and changes. I´m not against changes. But i wasn´t happy as you introdused us to the “feature” that we can now see 4 charakters, because i dont think it is an feature, because know i have 4 charakters and dont know which is paired with who till i click on the page and look or have to read (It is really pain) But ok i could live with it. I´m not happy about but okey with this feature i close the most storys if can´t define if i have this pairing or this…

The next. Like Angie i didnt know i used enter as much in the search Mode, but now i know. I really use it much and i´m unhappy to realise i have to use every time the mouse to push the button (A step back if you ask me) But okey i could live with this change too, (And i hoped you change it back)

But now im really really unhappy. I dont know why i saw it only now, because i used it very much. This change is not from March, its a new change but there was no new post about it. So This Coment lands here.

I search in the crossovers really much. I loved how i could see which Theme is with this… (for example Harry Potter x Lord of the Ring) Now i cant see it any more… The new Filter is ugly and i didnt know in the first place if i want to push it…. I liked the table with all information, because i could see what a want to change or what i have wrongly choosen.

All this changes make me unhappy. I know we need changes, and really at the most time i dont have something agains it… But this things are for me very important. And if i´m unhappy i´m not as happy to use this page… and that is really sad.

I ignored the big flames about fanfiction.net about the mass deletion from Storys with mature content…. (i´m not so happy with the mass deletion, but okay, what can we do if you think it is to havy to make a feature like you have to log in to read mature content. And if you want to read mature content with intim szense you have to aktivate your login with your passport or such a thing to garante that you are over 18. [But okay its heavy programming to think on the whole worlds passports] )

But now i´have problems with the new features if they become worst….

The littlest things are the things we like the most. Dont change it because you think you have to… We people are creature of habits. We dont like big changes or changes who limit ur fun. So keep this in mind and maybe you can keep your old user (I know FF.net since 1999 and i´m a member since 2002) Im sad to see such big change and many unhappy user. And now i´m unhappy too… I really hope it is only a temporar thing that i cant see which theme is with the other in the crossover area. And i can use the enter button in the search option. Im not happy with 4 choosable charakter but i can life with it.

I really love your site, but at the moment i want to change the styl back to the old styl (i would be happy if i could choose my styl like in a forum. Then you could make a new styl and can hold the old user with their old styl)

So enough i hope you have read till now and if you have thank you for your time. I love your page an would hate it if more writers are going.

    Best wishes Matjes
