I tested the filters and don’t really have an issue with them, though to be fair I’m blind and my screen-reader doesn’t perform differently depending on the size of the text.

I’m surprised they haven’t blogged about this myself. Where are you, Xing? Have you been locked out of your blog or something? Have aliens invaded FFN/FP headquarters and abducted everyone?

OK. I have put up with a lot of crap form the website being changed but this is the last straw! I have a H.P. Mini and I can’t even use the filters now because they do NOT FIT on my screen anymore. This is probably the stupidest change ever made to this site. Did you guts even think it through!? Clearly not!! I and most who have commented hate this change it back or fix it I don’t care which just get it done! Start emailing your users when you make changes what YOU do now needs changed NOT the site.

I don’t see why everyone’s all upset over this new filter system. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it. What’s a few extra clicks? Are you really in that much of a hurry?

I know this isn’t the right location for feedback, but here you go:

Your recent change of the stories listing has been completely bolloxed up! While there are some positives like the new point to separate character names, there’s one huge new problem. In the crossover sections we cannot identify the two fandoms anymore to which a story belongs. This makes looking through these listings a waste of time.

I do not like this new filter. Having my options hidden under a button like that sucks for one. The floating pop up is annoying, not to mention the options are poorly arranged.

And the addition of Character C and Character D filters mean that searching for a specific pairing is harder then it was 48 hours ago.

For example: If I want to read Emma x Regina (OUaT) I now have to scroll through a bunch of stories that pair either lady with men, when clearly I’m looking for Femslash.

Adding Emma to Character filters A and B, and Regina to Character filters C and D does not eliminate this issue either. (Note: I’m using a random, but fairly known non-canon femslash pairing only as an example. I have not tested this pairing yet, but I have tired others) – Also, using the ‘Without’ Character A/B filter to eliminate Common Male Love Interest does not make any real impact on the search results either. — When testing this in other fandoms, I still got results containing that character as one of the primary characters listed even though I had selected to filter him out.

For now, its not *too* horrible. But as more and more writers start using Character Filters C and D, its going to make it very hard to find Slash, or non-canon, or rarer pairings or character mesh-ups

Bottom line. I really really do not like this “new and improved” option filter. Actually, I hate it. I also dislike the fact it was changed with no warning… thats annoying.

Change it back, pleaaasseeeeee. Change it back. Or give us the option to change it back. Something idk. I liked how the filters have worked for *years*

That’s why they need tags for slash/het/ectera. The character filters were not meant to indicate pairings in the first place and by using them to indicate pairing many of us ended up running into pairings we didn’t necessarily want to read.

Wow, am I the only one who likes the new filters? The top of the screen became cluttered with the additional character additions. This new menu is sleek and stylish.

I also really, really like the ability to filter out certain genres and characters.

    Thank you, Xing. :-)

Anyone know why I can’t see the bottom of the filter screen? I want to filter to read stories with certain characters but it cuts off right under the Without characters and won’t scroll down so that I can click apply…

Me personally? The extra click is a minor irritant. My real problem is when viewing crossovers from the view all that you can no longer tell which fandoms are involved other than the main series you are searching through.

A second feedback on the filters:

The story-length filter doesn’t work as it did before anymore. If I choose “>1k words” for example, stories often remain in the list, that should have been cut. 520 words, 352, 107, etc. It doesn’t worth with other choices either, “>20k words” for example shows a story with only 19,192 words.

Please return the Filters to the way they were. Having to open a new pop up or page or what have you is an annoyance and problamatic when you want to change the filters and have to click another button and change something. They way it worked before was easier to use, you could see exactly what filters you had and could make immedate changes. And is there really a reason to include filters for what you want to exclude? I really don’t see a point for this change, how it was before was fine and, for me at least, worked perfectly. Please Xing, put it back to the way it was before. Many of us want it!

      07/26/2013 at 12:43 am

@WinchesterGrl09 – a lot of people have been asking for a filter to exclude certain genres or characters from the search results. Just because you “don’t see a point for this change”, doesn’t mean the admins should ignore the many, many requests for it. Go back and read the previous posts, you’ll see it requested over and over again.

There are problems with the way it’s been implemented, but I doubt they’re going to remove it altogether, seeing as it’s been on a lot of wish lists for a long time.

      • WinchesterGrl09

        07/26/2013 at 1:39 am

@bienfait- You’re right, filtering out certain charaters or genres is actually something I’ve quickly, albeit very quickly, come to enjoy. But I still stand by the fact that having to open what is escentially a new page is very irksome and quite frankly seems to be a waste of time. I, and what seems to be a good number of people, wish they’d return the filters to how they were before. This is once again another change that, seems so far, to have no logical reason for being done.

      • yemi hikari

        07/26/2013 at 2:04 am

@ WinchesterGrl09 -The reason the admins decided to put all of them into a box may be because back when they announced that they were going to be adding two new character slots quite a few people complained that the filter section would become messy and unattractive as well as pain to use and some people voiced that for being able to filter out stories as well. So they decided to come up with a way to make it so that people wouldn’t be complaining about it being messy.

        07/26/2013 at 10:09 am

Yes, a lot of users asked for a filter to exclude, but that wouldn’t have been necessary if they didn’t made available the 4-charaters-tag option. This kind of option only made the things even more complicated and it’s annoying finding in my favorite tag stories about characters I’m not interested in. Maybe the 2-characters-tag was inadequated for writers to tag their story with, but it made more simple for readers to find the stories they wanted to read, and I assume that the majority of fanfiction.net users post their work for it to be read. In the last weeks I left a lot of reviews to authors that tagged their fanfics with the new 4-characters method putting them in the wrong section, alertin them to correct the tags. I think this is proof that the new 4-character option isn’t user-friendly.

      • yemi hikari

        07/28/2013 at 2:23 am

@ Jordan – While I don’t find anything wrong with someone asking that a person remove a character from the list if the character actually isn’t a main character, actually demanding that they change it is honestly rude, particularly when you don’t know if the reason the main character can’t be found in the earlier chapters happens to be because they become a main character later on in the story. I don’t have many like this, but I actually have one story that has two parts to it like Lord of the Rings and two of the main characters don’t show up/play a major until the second part of the story. They’re still main characters.

      • Jordan

        07/28/2013 at 5:25 am

@yemi hikari-I understand perfectly your point of view, that’s because I suggest this kind of correction only for one-shots or when the author states clearly, in the author’s notes, ‘the story will be focused mainly on character X and Y’, while the story is tagged Y and Z, because maybe they clicked on the wrong name on the drop down menu (it could happen). It’s a suggestion, I’m always polite and I always leave a honest comment on the story and the writing style, I don’t write ‘Stupid idiot change the tags immediately whine whine whine’…because I saw users acting like that, harassing authors who make the mistake of putting the story in the ‘wrong’ tag. Of course a writer can tag his/her story the way he/she wants. Anyway, I keep thinking that the 4-characters filter only made things more complicated. Well, more complicated for readers, because I suppose that for writers this ample scope for tagging is very convenient. I’m not trying to sound sarcastic.

Your work on fanfiction.net is much appreciated, but unfortunately the latest changes don’t work for me at all.

What I’ve seen so far, that has become worse:

    1) When viewing crossovers, we don’t see the categories of the stories anymore. That’s especially critical when browsing the “show all * crossovers” pages. Currently the stories in question can only be identified by actually opening them.

    2) The filters don’t work as advertised. I’ve so far seen wrongly sorted stories (ie a 4 days old story at the top of a list sorted by update date, when there are more recent stories) and errors with filters (ie the setting of minimum words allowed is not always respected AND the time limit of within x days/weeks/etc does not return the correct amount of stories).

    3) Adding all the dropdown-lists to the modal popup may be okay for some people, but I’m not one of them. What’s worse, we can’t even look anymore which display settings are currently active, as that requires two clicks now (one to open and one to close the filter popup). I’d rather scroll a bit more like before!

    x) Clicking anywhere on the story information will open the story. I’ve already opened a few of them by mistake. This isn’t a huge issue, because I have deactivated it with a custom GreaseMonkey script, but it wasn’t a favorable change.

I hope that we’ll be able to keep the extended functionality, but I would appreciate if the newly introduced bugs (1 + 2) could be fixed. The rest (3 + 4) are merely my preferences, some of which I can customize myself with some Greasemonkey and Stylish work.

I’m glad I’m not the only one ticked off with the Filter changes. I didn’t bookmark preset pages like many here I went in from the home page only to get blind sided. With me the Rating’s arn’t showing on the Filter & many of my favorite stories are M rated so I’m pissed. I hope that all these complaints make them chage everything back to the way they were.

The new filters are incredibly annoying! I mean, I know it’s just lazy of me to complain about extra clicking, but I found nothing wrong with the old filters. Now, when you try to put in just 2 characters, a million stories that have those tags appear, instead of just stories that have those as the FIRST two. Also, it seems to reset itself every time. Please let someone be reading this, and try to improve this. We can’t sift through all these stories without filters!

    • yemi hikari

      07/26/2013 at 2:12 am

The site admins announced months ago that they were going to add two extra character slots.

If you come to find that the character you’re looking for isn’t a main character let the writer know that it upsets you, but be wary that some stories may list a character as a main character despite the fact they don’t show up towards the beginning of the story as they have a major role as a main character later on.

If you’re upset that you can’t find your ship via the character tags anymore, that wasn’t what the tags were for in the first place.

      • Silver

        07/26/2013 at 2:25 am

Yes, yes, I understand that you’re the voice of reason here. I already know that there’s four character slots. I just wanted to at least give the new system a chance, but when I attempt to put 2 or 3 characters in, the results aren’t really in any kind of order. But when people list their characters, they list them specifically in order of importance. I could feed you excuses like that I’m afflicted with memory problems, so any change scares me, or that I’m too dang lazy to open a stupid window all the time, but I notice that I’m not the only b*tch complaining. So please, let me go back to my meager existence. *lurks into the darkness*

EXACTLY what Prospero Hikari said, and what others have said regarding the filters, as well the crossover filters.

Seriously, this came out of NO WHERE. NO. WHERE. A warning WEEKS ahead would’ve been much more appreciated.

In addition, the option of either “modern” or “classic” format/theme would’ve been also a very good idea. I liked the earlier themes and found it much better than the more recent themes.

i don’t like new filter because I don’t like such popups in general, but it’s not worth complaining about. I got used to the “new” follow/favorite popups pretty fast. :)

The problem is that when I search with the ‘time range’ filter, like ‘published last 6 months’ I only get results of stories that were published very recently. Does this happen to anyone else?

Another thing I am not liking of the new “updates”. Simply clicking the entry – not the link, nor the picture – automatically takes you to the fic, namely the most recent fic entry. I find that unnecessary and redundant, unless it’s a bug. If it IS a bug, it should be removed. Because, there may be times where I’d like to copy certain words or part of the summary, and I can’t do that because of JUST CLICKING that most recent entry takes me to the fic. Sure, I could copy from either the author’s profile or after opening the fic, but it’s just another annoyance.

Seriously, please: If it isn’t broken, don’t “fix” it.

So I’m stuck reading fic from K to T but most of my favorite stories are M rated. What can I do? I have an older system I can’t afford a new one.

Hurrah for the ability to filter out romance!!

I agree with other people the pop-up is annoying and a hide/show button would be better, and I’d like to see the currently used filters on top of the result pages, but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the exclusion filter!

Also we used to get crossovers in result pages when we were looking for stories in a specific fandom; I’m not sure when exactly you fixed this but thank you too! And finally, thanks for showing newly created stories as well as updated stories on the ‘just in/updated’ page.

I’m having a problem with the font size. I have my font size set higher then normal and so when the popup is on my screen, I can’t see the bottom of it, and I can’t scroll down, and if I try it closes the popup. I’ve gone around this by making my font smaller, too small for me to read with any speed, and then increasing the font by the a- a+ button, becuase if I ctrl (+) it increases the font outside the border of the screen. Plus a little notification would be nice.

Everyone, please keep in mind that this update has been implemented for all of TWO DAYS. I’m sure they will fix the bugs given sufficient time. It’s obvious they are still active or this wouldn’t have happened at all. The admins may not be saying it, but I will. This is a free resource, and the programmers are doing their best to make it as user friendly as possible. That said, they are human like the rest of us and you can’t expect them to get it right straight off the bat. Be patient with them.

You can’t deny, however, that the changes would be easier to take/accept if we were at least warned that they were coming. If I had at least seen somewhere that they were making changes, and there might be bugs etc, etc, it wouldn’t be as bothersome. No, they don’t need our approval, but keeping us informed so we aren’t drowning in confusion would be good too. I don’t agree with some of the filters, and wonder why others aren’t included. TO ME (and I stress this is my own personal opinion) sorting stories by reviews is useless and pointless. Sorting stories by word count is almost essential yet not offered. I’m also annoyed that filtering by length doesn’t give you ranges to work with and if you choose anything over 5k it gives you stories up to 400k+ to choose from. Again, that’s me and I wouldn’t even care if I could sort by word count.

Okay I love the new filter system. Took a bit to figure out an get used to but when I got it i liked it. I do however have a complaint! I am a huge Crossover fan and i genrally go on some of my favorite movies anime cartoon ect. and click show all crossovers. It allows me to see what’s new and happening and not open up like a million windows. Before the recent change you could see what the crossover was. Acengers/Spiderman ect. Now you can’t and not everyone does characters so I have to meticulously go through the summaries for the ones I want. Please place the categories again it’s too confusing without them.

    Thank you

Just have to say this here I can’t find fanfiction.net’s email adress for problems.

Next for some reasonm with your latest update when you browse through severa crossovers there is no longer the titles of the eries their crom of what the crossover is from. It’s less convient than the last setting you had before you changed it.

What the heck is going on? How am I supposed to look for good stories on the search bar if I can’t even select what fandom I’m looking for…Hey, yemi, this is Sasuke, the one who posts violators on critics united.

getting errors trying to use the filters, I apply them, try to navigate to page two out of 11.. and I get slapped with a type 1 error. come on FFn..this is obviously NOT working.

Please change the format back to what it originally was. I feel as if we’re losing readers because they’re unable to centralize the couples they’re looking for specifically. They can’t read my updates and new readers are finding it difficult to navigate through all these extra filters, which keep resetting themselves to the original setting after each application. PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK. Just disregard this ONE update Fanfiction because some of these improvements aren’t entirely welcomed. They’re hindering advertisement of stories and causing mass confusion! Seriously, don’t be surprised if the population of this site plummets because you’re so bloody interested in becoming a writing style of Facebook.

Annoyed with lack of news aside, there seemed to be some issues going to Page Two (and so on) from some categories. One of my main fandoms’ were fixed, but not so with others. :l The new filter pretty much broke a lot of things.

A question to any and all admins, why can’t you take a minute to warn us ahead of time? Much less informing us at the last minute. It’s very disappointing to see silent admins.

I’m having the same issue. None of my fandoms have been fixed though.

If it is specific to certain fandoms then perhaps people should be bringing to the site admins a list of the fandoms not working.

Does anyone know why I can’t scroll down on the filter screen? I only want to read stories with certain characters but it cuts off right under the Without characters.

more problems with latest release: If you accidentally click anywhere in a story description, the story is being opened instead of when you click the story title. I for one would prefer to not enter stories that I don’t want to read! The story should only open if the link is clicked…

also, forgot: the last updated in 24 hours is not working at all; it is not showing all stories updated in the past 24 hours (at least in the Harry Potter archive)

So far it seems like the most recent update to the site has largely been something most people don’t like or appreciate. It’s caused more problems to the site and while I’m sure they weren’t intentional, they are still present and so far haven’t been addressed. Please return the old filters, they worked better and didn’t cause the host of problems that the new filters have. If you won’t do that at least give us the option to have the old fitlers, it would help solve a lot of people’s frustrations.

The old filters are still available on the mobile version of the site. If you really can’t stand the new arrangement, why not go there for a while?

I seem to remember the same shrieks of hate and fury when they changed the reviewing system, but apparently most users have gotten used to it.

Sure, there are teething problems, but at least give the admins a chance to tweak the system and get it right. All these dummy spits are getting a little bit tedious, and not really helping.

The same thing happened when the site admins started adjusting the fonts as well so they would work on all browsers.

I don’t know about the filter update, but I don’t like what’s happening right now. I can’t even click anywhere on the archive pages without being automatically sent to the first chapter of the story that’s in the same general area.
Please fix! I really don’t like it, and it is extremely annoying.

        Awwwww!

Or maybe, the techs are working on it, instead of wasting their time with these FWP kids that seem to feel they are entitled to a reply “ASAP or I’ll take all my crappy fics!”

i don’t get sent to the story when i click in the description. but what’s really upsetting is not being able to go to page 2 and so on with the new filters, please fix it, the new filters would’n even be so bad if everything worked like it should

Is the Error Type 1 Message going to be fixed soon? I don’t know if anyone else is having this problem when they try to search stories through the new filter, but it’s been happening to me for a few days now. It says the site is up, but may just be down for me? :(

To throw in something positive out of all negatives though, I really do like the ‘Without Characters/Genres’ option. I used it for a certain character I disliked to have in my OTPs, and it worked fine. It’s something that should at least stay during the fix progress, in my opinion.

The ‘Next Page’ and whatnot’s are still broken though.

Even the mobile version is having problem now. I can’t see the “more” anymore so I can’t log in or do searches. (I´m using the 3DS browser)

I don’t like the new filters options. Plus, the time range option dosn’t work at all. The old one was working just fine.
