Do you have anonymous review moderation turned on? If it is, then there’s a 3 day window before they appear to the general public.

I would to ask a question regarding the temporary shut down of this page:

Why is it that whenever I search in the search engine specifically the update date section, it never seems to work or it wont show the newly updated stories foe the given category. Will this problem be fixed?

It would be really cool to add a ranking feature for the authors that would assign each story a value that took into accout the length of the story, as well as how long it has been up on the site. Such as ((Reviews+Views+Favorites+Alerts)/(Words x TimeSinceUpload)) / 4. I think a stat like that could give a more accurate ranking of the popularity of a story. Being able to at least sort one’s own stories in this fashion would be cool, and it might be another way people searching for a story could sort their results.

    Dear FanFiction.net,

My name was illegally used in a story on your site, titled “Forbidden Fruit,” written by user tooblondforu on 7/9/2011.

I would like to discuss the matter with the author. If possible, I want them to simply change the name of the principal character. If not, I would like the post removed.

Please contact me at ctavolazzi@gmail.com to resolve this matter.

    Thank you,

Thanks, guys, but I’ve been having trouble recently with something.

As of (possibly) last night, through FanFiction, I have been unable to post a new document or change documents in Doc Manager. I would try both methods in posting new documents and all the page would do when I submitted it would be loading for a few seconds, then saying the page could not be loaded. The same thing happens when I try to edit documents.
I have check my network, and all is working fine. It is not something on my end. I believe it could be some sort of bug, or glitch. I hope you can look into this, because I am unable to update my stories until this is fixed.

Well, they did say there would be “at least one large feature push if everything goes smoothly.”

With the network attack, complaints about eye sores, missing emails, updates to the search, and whatever else that went on, I think that means everything didn’t go smoothly. It’s only the twenty-first of April, so there’s still plenty of time to introduce something new.

I’m okay with being patient. I’m curious more than anything. I really like the texture backgrounds, so I’m excited to learn what else is planned. Of course, if it’s something really big then it’s best that they don’t rush it. If it’s worth the wait then, yay, I’m willing to wait for May!

I would be happy with little things, too. For example, I would appreciate it if ffnet did not send out email alerts to people I’ve blocked. Or if I could remove myself from someone’s fav list.

Since this is the last update post (surprisingly, considering this was supposed the be THE month of updates) I want to reiterate my request for a ‘forever’ option when logging in. I believe it’s now only for seven days or so and it’s not only incredibly annoying with the (once again) almost impossible-to-recognize captcha thingies (it took me 5 tries today), but it’s an attack on my eyes because the font preferences go away if you’re not logged in! I’m also still waiting for the option to adjust the size of the font for the entire site, not just in-story.

I agree, though that certificate (real person) thing is annoying, I can normally get it first or second try, but they should NOT use I (ai/eye) or lower case L because they look so alike, or even J. However, it could be worse like Hotmail’s one, which I have to use audio, and even then I have to try a few times to get it.

I would also like the large on everything option because I wear glasses and large is easier on the eyes. I have to have my control page zoomed in because its so small using my PC graphics settings, and if I didn’t I would have to have my face near touching the screen to read it lol.

Is there something I can do about that because I can’t update or reply to messages until then.

I’ve got concerns about the lack of security regarding plagiarism on ff.net. It’s really easy to cut and paste words and claim it as your own. There should be a filter of sorts to stop (or, at least, warnings and punishment for this kind of behaviour) plagiarism.

My friend, last night, had portions of her story stolen from a girl who claimed it has her own writing. This is not right. The story, as of now, has been removed from the site. However, plagiarism is happening all the time, and only the really concerned are trying to fix it. It would be helpful if the site runners of ff.net can put a stop to this, or, somehow enforce strict punishment for those who do commit plagiarism.

Removing ANY story that has been plagiarised will allow the plagiarist to win as ‘your’ ‘copyright’ date stamps are gone so it will now become, PROVE IT, which will be near impossible. If you’re EVER plagiarised, rule number 1: NEVER remove your fic. PM them to inform them that it is not theirs if admin aren’t listening, and then if they don’t remove your work, tell your fans/readers and they’ll likely help put a little pressure on.

      BUT NEVER DELETE YOUR WORK!

When I said “the story, as of now, has been removed from the site”, I meant that the plagiarised story had been removed from the site, not the actual story from where the stealing had occurred. However, thank you for the advice, I would not have thought about leaving a story up on the site that has been plagiarised. I will definitely tell my friend this advice.

Lol, my bad interpretation. But I’ve heard of authors taking down, which is the thing you shouldn’t do or you let them win in stealing your intellectual property. You of course have to prove you’re the true author, and date-stamps do that perfectly. If you had it uploaded somewhere else with an earlier than the ‘fakes’ then that counts, even if its in your blog.

I’ve been reading and writing for quite a few years, so seen some plagiarism: a story of mine included, which got sorted. But before you do something rash, being emotionally upset (like we all would/have/will get) with the ‘stealer’ – think: always think or they might just get away with their crime.

Its not hard to come up with their own ideas. I come up with too many sometimes. Just watching TV, playing video games, or listening to music or watching movies can give you ideas, whether a cross over or not. Its better to try and fail at your own originals (I’ve written WINS and FAILS) and keep going either way. Its fun for me as much as my readers. Its gotten to be quite the hobby really as I sometimes have a lot of free time on my hands.

I’ve actually just bought The Hunt and The Prey, (finally), and I’ll be reading them soon, (if you don’t know they’re a series (Hunt Series) by Andrew Fukuda, with vampires ‘rueling’ the world). So maybe I’ll get some new (to me at least) ideas for either cross-overs or The Hunt fanfiction. It sounds like it might be fun with either Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Twilight, (to make it good XD), or Harry Potter. XD

But I’ve heard of authors taking down, which is the thing you shouldn’t do or you let them win in stealing your intellectual property.

I’ve also heard of writers who’ve been bullied by the plagiarist to take down their story with false accusations of plagiarism. There are also the false accusations of plagiarism levied at people because they had a similar idea, like “new girl to school”. Unless you know you plagiarized it is advisable to not ever take down a story.

        04/23/2013 at 12:07 pm

Again, I think it’s important to be sure of your facts before tossing accusations of plagiarism about the place.
Many of the beginning writers here have read all the same books or seen all the same movies/tv/videos. Starting from such a limited inspirational universe, some overlap is almost inevitable and must be put down to coincidence.
Even identical sentences or names or bits of dialogue or plot devices are not prima facie of plagiarism.

      • Merlin Recon

        04/23/2013 at 12:58 pm

@yemi – I haven’t seen it happen on FF.NET, but have on other sites. Authors should be real careful when dealing with their work and plagiarism.

@Lynn – I always get my facts straight when its important like that. I don’t care about sentence stealing, but plot stealing, or word for word chapter stealing. I understand something’s can just be coincidence though.
I had a chapter 1 stolen before, but the plot went completely different, so after some words he gave me props for the chapter and I let him use it.
However, I had put a fic on hold a while back and someone uploaded the whole thing with just a few changes, even had the cheek to say I gave permission. Its funny how it is one of my most popular fics and he only got about three reviews.

I was just wondering while we’re on the subject of plagiarism, what opinions do you have on fanfiction fanfiction? Should we ask the fanfiction authors permission, or just go ahead as technically we don’t have the canon authors consent, they just don’t care, so, thoughts…?

      • Lynn Hollander

        04/23/2013 at 1:35 pm

        >Merlin Recon: For some years I wrote fanfic. At the start of every story, I acknowledged that I wrote another in author’s universe, using his characters and setting.
I think fanfic is an excellent discipline for writers who seek a career in script writing. Writing to a show’s Bible is very much like writing good historical fiction.
Fanfic did not remain totally satisfactory for me, and I began writing pure fiction. –actually, since I write urban fantasy, some reality creeps in: the physical environment, mayors, Berkeley city politics, California state politics, the whole San Francisco Bay area and its innate craziness –none of which are subject to copyright and all of which can be used by any writer.

      • yemi hikari

        04/23/2013 at 7:21 pm

@ Merlin Recon – The proper etiquette typically is to ask permission. Even though I don’t mind people using my stories for inspiration, if it is a direct sequel/prequel/side fic or they’re borrowing any of my OCs I want to know, and I don’t want it used in a manner I don’t want. For example, I would be very displeased if someone took a story where I paired two characters up only to break up the pairing I had set up for their OTP. (I used the word OTP for a reason here.)

There are exceptions to the rules. For example, parody and satire of another persons fanficis fair game. I also know that Red Witch is fine with anyone writing for her Misfit Universe, which is a universe that crosses over X-Men Evo and G.I. Joe (the old cartoon) together. Pretty much EVERYTHING in that crossover category is in some manner related to the Misfit Universe, whether it takes place in the universe, or happens to be highly inspired by her work. Another exception is abandoned works or not hearing back from the author for a long enough period of time. It’s fair game.

      04/22/2013 at 8:34 pm

I hope something is done about plagiarists, too. A friend of mine had her story stolen from another writer, with entire passages taken word for word, and the other writer was a coward enough that she and her fans attacked my friend because she called this plagiarist out on the theft. The plagiarist left the site before her account could be shut down, but she’s now over in another fandom doing the same thing, stealing from the other writers because she lacks the brains and talent to come up with her own ideas. She’s gotten smart enough to realize that if she changes what she steals up a bit, she can’t be called out because Stop Plagiarism says it’s a case of GMTA, even though a lot of what this idiot steals is specific ideas that are only found in one person’s story.

    @yemi hikari
Italics! What codes does this thing use? Or do you need to log through WordPress to access formatting?

    @Merlin Recon –
Regarding fanfanfic, I gave that quite a bit of thought not too long ago. There’s a freaking ton of abandoned story material floating around the ff net and I took some time to consider the prospect of continuing a few, whether it just be a next chapter, a guess at how it ended, or a full on adoption. In the end, I decided that if I ever did it, I’d want to do it right, and came up with a few strict guidelines that I would personally keep and post in my profile.

    I’ll post them here:

I will ask permission via review. If you say no, I won’t post it. If you want to see it first, I’ll send it to you. If I don’t receive a negative reply within 15 days, I will publish it.

You, the original author, may deny my right to continue your story. It was your idea, afterall. If at any time for any reason you wish for the content pertaining to your and only your story to be removed, please tell me. I will delete it as soon as possible. If I have offended you in any way, I offer my apologies. No malice or offense was ever intended.

You, the original author, will receive full credit. The beginning of my contribution will be marked with your pen name, story title, and story identification number. I will also note whether or not permission was given and when.

I will add any stories that I “continue” to my favorites list. It’s a simple courtesy and makes finding your original fic easier. I demand nothing in exchange.

I will not put any characters in explicit sexual situations.

I will not copy or repost your work. Anything I post is intended to be a brief, harmless chapter of fanfanfic. It’s a continuation, not copy.

      04/23/2013 at 7:28 pm

@ seila – Just use basic html coding. That’s how I get the italics in my stuff. Pretty much everything you said, except when it comes to parody and satire of someones work you don’t need the permission. You still need to not do things like placing the characters into sexual situations and even with parody there are things that require tact.

        04/24/2013 at 12:41 am

Ah, thanks for the tip :)

As for the sexual situations. . . I know it’s against site rules, but honestly, I’m not sure if everyone else knows that. I think I’d still say it, because you can still find adult material on this site very easily. Seems polite to let people know you’re not going to do anything overt with their idea.

Can someone explain to me why the follow/favorite button is at the top AND the bottom in a story. I can understand the bottom because after you read the story you know whether you want to fav/follow it but at the top? Also to have it in two place in the story is kinda annoying. Or is this just me?

It is seventeen days since your scheduled down service. Your site has, for the past 24 hours had several periods of unexplained downtime. What is going on and why haven’t you informed your members or followers to the status of this issue? When will it be repaired? Is it an issue on your end, or on the hosting services end? Your members and followers, readers of your archived works from your members, would like to know. This lack of response is severely distressing to many, and constantly reflects badly upon your PR.

There’s also the issue with Fanfiction.net adding odd spaces in copied link addresses that throw off the whole thing

I did notice that the reply issue has mostly been fixed though

After several days I was finally able to log back on the fanfiction.net. I wonder what happened?

Have they just changed this blog theme to black or is it me. Also, in my control panel I used to be able to click my settings links and open a new tab to my homepage but it just changes my page now. Plus, just uploaded a chapter and received NO email alert from either my main profile, or my spare.

They’re a bit late, but the alerts finally came through.

Black? Uhm…No. It’s brown for me, same color it’s always been. I wondering when they’re going to roll out the major updates for the month they said were coming this month. It’s getting awfully close to the end of the month and I’m beginning to become a bit hesitant to trust them when they tell us when things will come out then it happens at the exact end of the month or worse, never.

No idea then. I’ve cleared my cash and everything and it’s still brown on my end. maybe its a rollout being released to different parts of the world over time.

PM’s keep forcing all my windows and tabs to reload when I start typing in a PM.

Is it cause I have Windows 8?

Is anyone else having alert problems again or is it just me? I’ve checked with my spam, re-added fanfiction to my contacts, and a good amount of my alerts are still missing. Using Yahoo.
