Should we make a petition for this?

I think the comments should be enough to say the change isn’t appreciated.

Still, keep that option in the pocket for the worse case scenario.

This site does not really listen to petitions. There have been petitions to allow back MA stories and delete sign reviews since 2008 and the site hasn’t budge on neither.

*chuckles* There have been petitions to allow MA fiction back on site since 2002.

I personally doubt the petition I created back in 2007 had anything to do with the report function being added in for reviews. By the time it was added there were only two signatures. What people don’t realize is that a petition can’t force people to do anything, particularly when what people are asking for is unreasonable. I remember a petition that got a lot of signatures started up by the Harry/Hermione fans that asked for Emma Watson to be canned from the part of Hermione Granger and for Alan Rickman to be canned from the part of Severus Snape.

Lol. Sounds just like the petition for that shades of grey movie. No serious actor is going to film a porn movie. People do some silly things.

I hate to sound fixated on this but this whole discussion may be relative to the Americans with Disabilities act which does have some mention of people using computers to communicate etc. If the ‘cut and paste’ option is used by people with those needs, and it has been used by people – then it is deliberately ‘taken away’ and limits their ability to use the site – then this function should be restored. I know that being able to write stories isn’t exactly a ‘health and safety requirement’ but for some people it is part of the reason why they enjoy life. So please restore the ‘cut and paste/highlight’ option for the people who use it. Thank You.

*points back to previous post* You’ll need to look under Title III of the ADA; however, would like to point out that the cases brought in regards to this apply to commercial sites, of which this is not considered because it does not charge its users for its services.

      • Belen09

        10/10/2013 at 9:46 am

However this action could cause a great deal of ‘bad feeling’ among certain groups – which could and I think would result in reduced ‘customer’ usage – and to advertisers this would be considered a ‘commercial site’ . . . from an economic standpoint this is a bad move.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        10/10/2013 at 10:40 am

Despite the fact that I agree with you that this is a poor decision in regards to economics, because this site takes in no revenue from its “customers” it is not considered commercial. Unless the site can be proven to be making a profit, I don’t know that it can legally be considered a commercial site. Yes, the advertisements place it in that realm, despite it being owned and operated by Xing. However, unless he’s making a profit from those advertisements (eg taking a paycheck) and not simply supporting the site’s hosting costs, then it would not be considered a commercial site.

Should you wish to approach an ADA legal advocate, I would certainly have them check into the balance sheets regarding the site’s ad revenue versus hosting costs to see if it is actually viable to consider the site commercial.

While I would be interested to see the outcome of an ADA legal advocate taking on a non-commercial site that uses advertising as its support removing functionality for disabled users, I do think that you would need to actually contact the advertisers and advise them of the issue.

Having said that, I don’t think that they necessarily would pull their ads (which I believe are assigned through Google ads, actually). They might file complaints with Google about the placement of their ads, though.

i’m glad you say so. i have dyslexia and the text tends to get blurry and the words switches places.
but due to a program that uses the highlight function i can still read it. and the copy and paste is helpful for the really long and difficult words we want to repeat in the review. i even had problems spelling the word difficult before and i still can’t get it right without help.

If it would help you, I can recommend two different tools that will allow you to download full copies of FFN stories, which can then be highlighted.

fanfictiondownloader.net (a program you install in your computer)

flagfic.com (an in-browser tool; no program to download)

does anyone know how to get in touch with the creator of the site and maybe we can write to him about the issue about the copy and paste option. besides putting it on a blog.

I know they read the blog comments because suggestions and changes have been based on the comments made on here. The owner is either really busy or completely ignoring everyone. I’m of the opinion of the ignoring part.

Well, if my theory is right and he’s trying to get a ton of negative comments about this particular addition so he can tell the people who want nocopy that its a no go then yeah, he definitely is ignoring the comments.

On an unrelated note, THANK YOU for deleting more of the copyright infringing stories. I appreciate your efforts to remove these materials as they do constitute theft.

    Many, many thanks!

p.s. – You will note that the reports I’m submitting via the report function are now including the full header and footer of your pages. That’s because of the nocopy. Until c/p is turned back on, that’s more convenient for me.

      10/11/2013 at 1:10 am

Yes, thank you for paying more attention to the reports. More MA and MSTs have been removed, the site actually is starting to feel clean again.. Now keep it up, and get that new report system in. It should help out more.

      • Birdymain

        10/11/2013 at 9:46 am

What’s MST? I’ve personally haven’t seen a difference in the reports. I know of one author’s story being taken down due to MA rating. And went right back posting numerous MA rating fics after being told why their story was taken down.

I do wonder if they check the emails? I reported an abuse case where the author posted the id number of a reviewer trying to blacklist them. That never got taken down. . . Is it policy to take down one thing of an authors if they violate the rules and ignore all other reports for them? Because that’s what I’ve noticed.

      • yemi hikari

        10/11/2013 at 5:19 pm

Think of MST like the option on movies where you can hear commentary from certain people who worked on the movie as the movie unfolds.

Any rule breaking story wise from a writer will be taken down if reported. I don’t know about profiles and other stuff though.

Don’t know if this has been posted yet (lots of comments to read through), but if you have Firefox, the add-on “RightToClick” will allow you to highlight again. Just go to a page you can’t highlight and click the icon for the add-on in your status bar.

    for Firefox users:

Type “about:support” in URL bar and click in enter. In first table, click on the “Show Folder” button to get to your Firefox profile folder. Within profile folder, go into “chrome” folder. Create new text document and name it “userContent.css”. Make sure it doesn’t add any other file extension. Open file with notepad and copy & paste the following text:

    @-moz-document domain(fanfiction.net) {
    .nocopy {
    -moz-user-select: text ! important;
    }}

Save the document. Close all Firefox windows. Open Firefox again and start reading fanfiction.net stories with highlighting enabled.

As a reader and writer it is important and very helpful to be able to copy and paste stuff from a story. It helps give more detailed reviews which helps writers know what readers like. Please please please bring this feature back!

While I understand the copy and paste issue is an issue, what about graphic futanari fics by authors such as Bunji the Wolf or the very graphic and disgustingly sexual fics my Mikejv37. The amount of vast sexual and graphic language he uses in his stories is mind bogglingly and I’ve been reporting him for years.

I am joining the many others is stating that it is very inconvenient to not have the copy paste function available. I am in the process of fixing my stories and now that has been put on hold because I cannot C&P the existing one into Word to fix the problems. Most chapters were uploaded in 2008/9/10, and there have been several computer changes since that I’ve gone through, so do not have the original documents anymore. So I need to copy and paste. I am a person of habit, and to break my routine is causing me stress and put all writing on hold. Please listen to us and bring copy and paste back. Thanks.

Adding to the chorus, please return the copy/paste function. Without it, it’s practically impossible to point out spelling/grammar errors and make specific comments based on specific sentences/paragraphs.

    • Hawki

      10/11/2013 at 8:44 am

Actually, fixed it. And when I say ‘fixed,’ I mean I use the “no style” page view in Firefox, copy-paste into a Word document, return to regular view, read, and copy-paste from the word document into the review box whenever I need to. Congratulations – plagarizers can still copy-paste the text in a few seconds while reviewers have to waste minutes of their own time to provide constructive feedback.

      (Slow clap.)

Try one of these tools that lets you download entire stories:

flagfic.com (paste the story URL in the form on the site, and you can download it or have it emailed to you)

fanfictiondownloader.net (a program you can install on your computer that will download stories the same way)

        FYI

Flagfic isn’t working with FFN right now. As of 5 minutes ago, no estimated time of fix, but they’re working on it.

        Fanfictiondownloader is still working.

Just to ask a question: Once a story has been reported and you get an e-mail back saying “The offending stories have been deleted, however due to caching the story might still show up for a few hours” (if you report via e-mail), how long does it actually TAKE for the story in question to be gone from the site? I ask because I got this e-mail over 24 hours ago and the story in question is still up (in case someone’s curious, the story used real actors as characters).

  24. Quincy

Well, it’s not personalized “Yo author!”, but it’s still a basic “we got your report, thank you very much”, which is better than nothing.

  25. Questioning Wanderer

    10/11/2013 at 8:50 pm

Anyway, back to my question, how long does it usually take for a reported story to be completely gone from the site after the admins say “we’ve deleted it”? They said it might still remain public for a “few hours” because of cache issues, but it’s almost been 48 hours by this point.

Myself and many others on Fanfiction.net have noticed that even since the updates we still have problems with the links being spaced out.

Apparently it’s not the links so much that any words that are over 43 or so letters long get spaces in between them in random spots. It screws with the links and can mess up dialect on the fiction stories too

    Can someone please fix this?

Looks like they decided to fix the ease of bypassing the nocopy issue. Still won’t prevent the issue of plagiarism. This whole thing is just silly.

      10/14/2013 at 7:59 pm

Can you clarify what you mean by “decided to fix the ease of bypassing the nocopy issue”? What have you seen/read? I’m not seeing any change in behavior today.

      • Bob Knob

        10/15/2013 at 1:08 am

In one of my earlier postings I talked about how easy it was to delete the nocopy style that started everyone complaining about not being able to select the text. More recently they decided to move the nocopy so that it couldn’t be bypassed like before. While this does make it more annoying to access the Text-To-Speech that I like to use, it still doesn’t protect anything in the end.

I think that the whole thing is silly. The only way to truly protect against copying like what they seem to be trying to to encrypt the stories in the html code. Even then that still creates a problem with those that Text-To-Speech for whatever reason. As it is, currently what they have isn’t much of a protection and in return it’s damaging user satisfaction.

      • Bob Knob

        10/15/2013 at 1:21 am

To further elaborate on what they did with the nocopy to prevent selecting. Originally they were style tags by themselves which made it easy to find and delete them from the page. Now they’ve included them into the div tags in two different places instead of just one.

This offensive code is in http://fast.fictionpressllc.netdna-cdn.com/static/styles/xss18_min.css from head tag of fanfic page. All automatic fixes seem to work, someone who hasnt automatic fix should confirm if select and copy still gets you whole chapter.

For MA stories and higher, maybe you could come up with a lock that only member’s can get to that are over 18. Have there age, day of birthday and year and 2to passwords one you guys give members and one member’s come up with themselves and if some one is underage trying to read an MA or higher story the lemon and lime part will be blocked to them.

    Just an idea.

Just coming here to comment that I’m another person who is really annoyed and inconvenienced by the new no highlighting/copy&paste change. It makes it really difficult to keep track of my place, use a translator or quote a section in a review. Please change it back! (Hopefully if enough of us speak out, they’ll change it back!)
