Filtering for Pairing

28 Oct

Filtering for pairing information has been activated on the public browsing areas. A simple check box activates the pairing mode in both +/with and -/without filters.

When pairing mode is activated, all characters selected are filtered as a single pair. One can use the new filter option to target a specific pair and/or exclude a pair.

I have no idea why but I can’t comment using my google email account. The status says connecting and then stays like that forever when I added it to my blog updates on google+.

Looks simple enough to use. Click on the pairing checkbox and select the characters. Not something I’ll likely use, but definitely a much-wanted feature!

Now maybe you’ll have time to keep up the pressure on rule-breakers and attend to the backlog of reports. (Though a series link, a revamped report system and a “report profile” button would still be very nice to have.)

?? So it’s not a different filter? Just a check mark? :/ So how is the filter suppose to work then? There are people who won’t use the filter, It would make more sense to add another separate filter for pairing.

I guess the site admins figured people would be looking for either main characters or pairings but never both. I tested it out and found that you can’t search for two pairings and you can’t search for a pairing with character A paired with any character and character B paired with any character, all the stories you get will be character A paired with character B. I like how it’s marked on the site, but I still think it would be best if the pairing filter was completely separate from the main character filter because the way it is set up it is very, very limited.

Urg. Really? So then how are threesome or more suppose to be implement.

Please, just make it a different filter. You’ll have less confusion and it’ll work better that way.

      • Yemi Hikari

        10/29/2013 at 12:31 am

Threesomes show up, but anything outside the bracket does not.So if you have two sets of brackets, thus two pairings you can only find one. But if you search for two sets of pairings and there happens to be a foursome between them or a love quad… well, I think you get the point.

Nah, I’m completely confused on how this is a pairing system and how we’re suppose to search for things. I tried the check mark in the Naruto section and came up with nothing. >.< I've just never seen or dealt with a relationship filter that was the exact same as the character filter.

No. This isn't a pairing filter.

        10/29/2013 at 2:58 am

Okay. Update. Got it to work. The only thing I saw different was if you searched for a specific pairing. And to search without a certain pairing.

        ^
        Still not a pairing system.

I’m looking forward to seeing this utilized, but at the moment believe it will take awhile as most people are still getting used to the new four character/pairing implements (or aren’t using it at all). So far, lots of people look like they’reusing it incorrectly, not using the pairing part, or their pairings are mixed up in the brackets.

Once all this new stuff that’s being introduced to the populace is being used and used correctly, I hope then this new filter will really take off.

Also, is it just me or is there no more option for Guest comments on the blog anymore?

I must ask this: Are copyrighted lyrics allowed on profiles?

    • The Warty Hogg

      10/28/2013 at 11:23 pm

No. Copyright means the RIGHT to COPY. Unless you hold that right, you CANNOT legally copy the material. The admins probably won’t do anything because they are not all that concerned with copyright infringement–or won’t be until someone sues–but legally, no. Morally and ethically, no. Can you get away with it here? Sigh. Probably yes.

Looks good, Xing! I tried out the pairing filter and I think it works quite nicely. Definitely much better than having a separate filter altogether, since that would make things much too cluttered.

    Keep up the good work!

As far as I know copyrighted lyrics are not allowed on profiles either, like all songs they would need to be in the public domain to be used, anything song written before 1922 is in the public domain.

    10/28/2013 at 8:20 pm

Wait? So it’s not a separate filter? Which means if a person wants to search for more then one pairing or main characters in addition to the pairing that they can’t?

    • Just Because

      10/28/2013 at 10:20 pm

I saw one story have two pairings, though I don’t know if it will work for your other question about a pairing and two separate characters.

So just to test, I made my way over to the Naruto section and selected (in this order) “Naruto U, Hinata H, Sasuke U, Sakura H.” And checked the box. Nothing came up.
      In short, no.

This update is awesome! The search results are much more precise! It feels like searching used to feel before the four-characters-update!

Right now few authors are using the brackets, but from what can already be seen in the Naruto section (which is… of considerable size) this is going to work very well!

    There’s one/two regrettable point(s) though:

    – selecting “pairings” in the “without” filters does nothing if no characters are selected (aka: no “all pairings” exclusion);

    – when selecting “without: pairing, character A, character B”, it doesn’t only remove fics where A and B are a pairing, it removes all fics in which A and B appear.

Conclusion: Is there any use to the “without: pairing”?? It would be neat to be able to exclude a certain pairing without excluding the characters altogether, and/or to have the option to exclude all pairings.

PS. When are you taking off the google translation toolbar? If we want google in our fic browsing, we have other options to get it, and forcing it on us isn’t very user-friendly at all.

You have a good eye for the finer details. The patch for negative filter has been created which will only remove pairs from the negative filters not include individual characters. Fix will appear in about 30 minutes.

This seems like a great idea but when you don’t have it enabled stories with pairings don’t show up even in the large archive without changing any filters. And with it on almost no stories pop up because people are so reluctant to use it. I can see this working if it had more specific options and allowed all stories to appear in the larger archives.

I’m hoping with the pairing and filtering supposedly now done, the RSS/ATOM feeds can finally be completely fixed since they’ve been partially broke since July and ideally also expanded to the story level.

I currently have 1534 personal profile page feeds, 10 category feeds, 10 crossover category feeds, and 1 site level just in feed.

Currently the non-crossover feed categories are broke, the just in is broke, and the story level feeds were never really implemented as was originally promised from back in mid 2005.

Expansion of feeds to story level would be great, as that would mean the 2900+ stories I have links for and track could be dumped by OPML into my feed reader.

I still think there should be some announcement, either on the story overview in a fandom or in the account area because I’ve seen a lot of new fics with pairings where they haven’t used the pairing feature. Others whom I’ve talked to didn’t seem to be aware of it and only changed it after being told about it, simply because they don’t check the homepage/twitter/blog.

This also means that you’ll only get 3 pages of completed fics when searching for a specific pairing in my preferred fandom and about half for WIPs, even though the pairing is very popular and has over 5K worth of stories.

So, really, how useful is such a “big” feature when no one seems to be using it because they don’t know it exists? It’s not as if the option to create pairings really jump out at you when you add the characters to your story.

    • Yemi Hikari

      10/29/2013 at 10:23 pm

Another reason why the pairing feature should be completely separate from the character feature as people are able to tell it exists.

    Dear Xing.

My private message e-mails are still not working and review alerts are still not working ether fan fiction e-mails are just not getting through to me, I have done all the steps with windows live mail 2011 but nothing is working.

I’ve had this issue since the upgrade 14/10/2013 There are no fan fiction e-mails going in to junk mail and the e-mail is seen as a safe sender. Also before the upgrade I was receiving email alerts from the site fine after this upgrade they just stopped coming through.

I have a question. If I find a forum in Spanish in the English sections or vice versa, and if the owner refuses to move it to the correct language, what applies? Do I report it or something? Because I found one that has some sexual content that is hidden in a language section different from the one the forum should be in.

This is the most ridiculous thing. The old system was FINE. You now have to check double because some people will not have “Pairings” while some will, and the ones without “Pairings” do not show up.

Why fix something that isn’t broken….

    • Yemi Hikari

      10/29/2013 at 10:25 pm

Because with four characters activated certain people were complaining that there was no way to single out stories with their pairings.

      • JLBShecky

        10/30/2013 at 11:15 am

I still stick by my original thoughts that what we need is the option to say no additional characters. In the larger fandoms there are a number of stories that we have no way of seeing among the clutter of all the other stories that have multiple characters.

I think that adding such an ability would be the single greatest improvement to the character search function.

      • Yemi Hikari

        10/30/2013 at 11:03 pm

Yeah, but that has to do with the character filter and not the pairing filter. The pairing filter would work if a.) people would label their stories and b.) the filter also included the second pairing in the search.

the filter dosnt seem to work very well as i have seen and read quiet a few fanfics with specific pairings and when you use the filter hardly any come up tried it on harry potter with harry and hermione just to see the results and only got 2 pages with the filters set at over 5000 words with that pairing when i am positive that there are hundreds of them out there even the ones that i have read with that pairing and have marked as a favourite didnt come up

    • Guest

      10/30/2013 at 1:03 pm

That’s not the fault of the filter. The authors have to manually add pairings before they’ll show up on any search. If it really bugs you then you should contact the active authors on your list and let them know about this change. But realistically, you’re only likely to get stories published from now on in any search.

        10/31/2013 at 2:52 am

Unfortunately I’m not seeing many writers using said filter system as they do new stories.

      10/30/2013 at 5:02 pm

This is because most people aren’t using the filter because unless you read the blog you don’t even know it is there.

  24. birdymain

    10/30/2013 at 1:55 am

Basically from my testing. There really is no difference from before besides a fancy symbol showing these characters are a pairing. I like that when I search for a character that all stories show up, with and without a pairing. That’s very helpful.

If you really can’t/won’t make the system a different filter. I would like to suggest when the check mark is used for the without filter, you can search for all stories that don’t have a pairing.

    10/30/2013 at 4:16 am

I had to check to see if this works – actually I don’t use the pairing filter – I just like reading good stories in the fandoms I like – even without the pairing . . .or checking in social media to leave comments!

  26. Erica

    10/30/2013 at 3:27 pm

So, like I said, the pairings fics aren’t showing because people aren’t using the pairing mode and correctly labeling their stories as such. Or incorrectly labeling their stuff, since some of them had the incorrect pairings, probably due to the previous update where the ordering was messed up.

I agree with fems that there needs to be an announcement somewhere, preferably on the author management pages, so people will know and can use the new features (and hopefully correctly).

Otherwise, it seems easy to use, if people were to label their fics properly.

The pairing issue is not very good. What happened to the original filtering setup that existed before the big change up? I try to search for characters wnd end up with oairings that I dont want.
The old character a / character b pairing setup was fine. Why fix what wasnt broken.
