SSL Upgrade @ Nov 15, 12AM (GMT-8)

14 Nov

On November 15th @12AM US PST (GMT-8) we will reserve a 2 hour maintenance window during which we will perform site-side SSL (web browser encryption) upgrades. During this maintenance window user may experience some broken links while we transition to 100% SSL.

Paranoid much?? I really can’t see the logic behind this. i can see for the submissions side, but, for the public side?

SSL is no longer just for encryption. Read up on spdy. We will be adding spdy support very soon and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to SSL and the future.

please get rid of the 5 minute same message prevention. it seriously awful. it doesnt prevent spam, all it does is prevent me from saying, “thank you” to more than one reviewer

What is SSL? I’m anything but a tech.

Web servers and web browsers rely on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to help users protect their data during transfer by creating a uniquely encrypted channel for private communications over the public Internet.

i agree with some of the past posts, lose the spam timers in the pm. they dont prevent spam, they only make our lives harder

get rid of the 5min delay between messages, or 10 second delay between replies. they are horrible

It’s nice to see more folks going 100% SSL. I support this plan wholeheartedly. Fortunately users don’t generally need to care at all about such things, but it’s the right thing to do.

I like the new format for reporting and favorite/following in the stories. A simple click to get a window to open up with what we need. Can we please return the review box to its own personal window? It would make leaving detailed reviews easier.

Is it just me, or is anyone else suddenly unable to search things? I keep getting this error message.

Xing, I’m encountering excessive slowdowns on my 3ds, and when I switch to mobile site mode on them both..my laptop(using google chrome, latest build) and my xbox 360’s internet explorer browser, I believe its the new SSL upgrade causing the issue, or the servers are slow due to the upgrade being implemented.

are there plans to optimize the SSL procedures for mobile devices that dont quite have the muscle to handle it? cause..my 3ds? worked just fine yesterday before the SSL upgrade.

before anyone asks, I tested a bunch of random links and encountered the same slowdown.

I’ve not been able to access the site from my mobile for a few days now. I can get to the log in part where I can view messages and setting etc. but no other part of the site will load.
I’m using an Opera mini brower on an Alcatel phone and I’m with vodafone.

Perhaps this update has something to do with my problem?

While currently my direct links still work, I’ll probably fix them all to be https sometime soon.

Fortunately, this is not as hard as it could be for me. I can dump the current raw link name and link using a program I wrote, and a few years ago I wrote a companion utility to take that information with slight modifications, and create links.

Changing 4440+ FanFiction.NET links should not take more than a couple hours or so (2880+ direct story, 1530+ author, 20+ category, main page). Probably less. Dump the names and links, edit them and place into the INI file to create them, run the program, then insert the new link names into the existing favorites and overwrite the old ones… then back up.

EDIT: What has also occurred though, is every RSS/ATOM feed reset itself to indicate it had changed with new information. I have 19668 stories listed as changed in the ATOM records as updated stories, for the 1530+ personal profile feeds I monitor.

Old links will work. No need to change your story links other your ATOM links.

The formatting is all HTML-ish and I can’t look at the tabs in my account! I’m viewing regular site view on an iPod Touch but the mobile site looked weird. Will this get fixed or is it just me? (I hope it isn’t just me)

“During this maintenance window user may experience some broken links while we transition to 100% SSL”, will this be fixed? I would hate to have to search through FF.net to rebuild my archive, not to mention for some reason I cannot scroll through tabs containing a story now.

None of my mobile links work. I thought it was a one-off and re-bookmarked everything but it keeps throwing me the same error: “Oops! We cannot find this page on m.fanfiction.net. Most likely you are accessing the site with an outdated link.” Please fix this asap!

Can you add an option (at least for logged in users) to NOT use SSL? For me, plain HTTP is much more convenient.

I am having trouble unsubscribing from alerts for a forum. I keep hitting “unsubscribe” and getting the message that says I have successfully unsubscribed . . . . But I keep getting email alerts anyway. What can I do?

In some of the fanfics, the YEAR they’ve been pulished and/or updated is missing. Why’d you take it away?

    • Yemi Hikari

      11/17/2013 at 4:05 pm

I think it has to do with the fact the YEAR is 2013 which happens to be the current year.

Clear your browser cache or just manually refresh the page.

So the solution was this simple? Shame on me…. (I actually manually deleted every seemingly temporal and not profile related file, simple refresh or cleaning cache wasn’t working.)
        Anyway Thank You!

Xing, I have been notified that there seems to be bugs when trying to access FFNet via Opera mini (Opera’s mobile phone browser).

The FFNet user I know told me that once she used a different browser, the issue was resolved. She has complained for a couple about this, and I suggested it was the ongoing maintenance (as per Nov 15), but it really seems to be a problem to do with loading FFNet in Opera mini.

Could you guys please investigate this bug?
