Opera Mini Users

17 Nov

Opera Mini users on older mobile devices need to have the following setting selected to avoid problems visiting our sites.

Opera Mini Configuration:

  • Under Settings -> Advanced, ,make sure “Sockets” is selected as the preferred connection method.
  • Also make sure you have the latest possible Opera Mini installed by visiting m.opera.com
  • Android users should avoid using Opera Mini and use the default browser of choice.

[Note that Opera Mini and other Opera products such as Opera or Opera Mobile are completely different browsers. The above post is only relevant to Opera Mini users. There are no known issues with Opera Mobile or Opera browsers.]

Do you plan to fix compatibility for Opera for Android?

There is no compatibility issue with “Opera” on Android that we are aware of. “Opera Mini” is completely different product.

People need Opera Mini in many parts of the world. The default Android browser is fine if you’re in a high bandwidth location and have a high data cap. If you have slow mobile internet or only buy your data in small chunks [eg. 100MB at time - hello Philippines] in your nation, then you need a cut-down, low bandwidth browser. Opera Mini is that browser.

No one expects a full browser experience on Opera Mini [no jscript, gifs, etc.] but it’s perfect for reading ffnet on the go. Without Opera Mini I wouldn’t be able to read ffnet at all.

You can dislike Opera Mini all you want, but as an Android user in a poor reception area with limited data allowances, it is effectively the only browser that works.

Just to add onto my previous post: I use Opera Mini Next. It’s effectively a beta version of Opera Mini with the latest features and bug fixes. I’ve never had any stability issues with it. I’d encourage any Opera Mini users to migrate to Opera Mini Next if they’re worried about having the best possible version of Opera Mini running on their device.

I guess Opera (and not just Opera Mini) is disliked and that’s why my previous comment about the issues I’m having since the SSL upgrade is still “waiting moderation” and obviously, the issues haven’t been fixed :(

Opera Classic on my android tablet can’t find the server for m.fanfiction.net but it connects to http://www.fanfiction.net just fine. Got a fix for that?
