7/10 Update

09 Jul

  1. Atom/RSS feed links have changed slightly. Previously they were under the sub-domain of “…” and they are now all under the “www” domain such as “” or “…”. Other than the domain part, the rest of the feed url stays the same format. Those who have older links need to update or receive 404 errors.

  1. Broken Community sort links when the title of the community contained the word “crossover”. The site mistakenly thought it was a crossover section link and not a community link.

If there is any way to fix the reviews so that the “follow story” and “follow author” are not automatically selected, it would be really helpful. As both an author and a reviewer, it has been driving me crazy – especially when people realize and delete you from their list, only to have their names reappear as following you at your next update. Also, when emailing the support, the generic email about “check to make sure it is not going into spam” is really frustrating and doesn’t answer any questions.

Thanks in advance! fanfiction has helped me make so many new online buddies.

I’m sure people have a lot of suggestions, but please please PLEASE can we add a feature to sort stories by “number of reviews”? I know that tons of reviews don’t necessarily mean the fic is great, but if you’re dipping into a new area with 1000+ stories, it would certainly help pick out some of the best ones to get oriented.

      07/10/2012 at 9:59 am

But then, the less-review one will get less reader, right? 😦

        07/12/2012 at 12:23 am

They might, but to be honest, if you’re dipping into a new fandom and you have no way to sort except by publication or update date, you might read the first five or ten stories and then call it quits if they are not good. And let’s face it, the proportion of good writing to bad is not always fantastic. 😉 At least if you can look at the 20 “most favorite-d” stories (I agree that’s a better way to sort than by reviews) you can read some excellent stuff in that fandom, get sucked in, and then start giving other authors a try.

How enter in the top 20 if you are a new author and everybody prefers reading popular stories instead of testing the new ones ? It’s good to oblige readers to read summaries and decide by themselves.

        07/12/2012 at 7:15 pm

There’s likely no point in arguing this in the comments (and I don’t want to abuse the privilege of this new blog which I think is a really good idea), but I’m not really seeing your concern, Alixe. If someone can go to a fandom, see some of the most-favorited stories, and then read them, is it really depriving other stories of readers? Probably not as much as it would if someone goes to that same fandom, reads a few really awful stories and decides not to bother with it at all. Yes it will allow people to identify the most-liked stories, but you can still sort by update date or whatever default you choose to see all the stories. At least someone can get a sense of good stories in that fandom and then hopefully branch out from there to read a wider variety of stories, both ones that are well-liked and ones that are newer or lesser-known. And there will always be people who are so into a particular fandom that they are willing to give any story a read. But saying that people should just be able to look at summaries and decide for themselves what is worth reading…that’s just impractical.

      • alixe75

        07/13/2012 at 1:14 am

Well, you are right, people can have both ways : first read the top 20 and after search something else / new to read between the mass of stories.
But, when a story will be in the top 20, most people will read it, and review it, and give it points to stay in best position. Even if 50% reader will read other stories, and review it, the second choices have less chance to go to the top, even il il is a text as good as the top stories. (sory, my english is not good and it is difficult for me to explain my ideas).

Anyway, if this system is add, i would prefer a sort “number of favorites” because it is more fair for short stories.

Oh, sort by reviews/favorites/felowers is now had been enforced !

    • mara (@marap23)

      07/10/2012 at 1:33 pm

I agree. I have often thought this would be useful. I understand reynard’s point too, though. Perhaps it could be ‘favourites’ rather than ‘reviews’? Or just a link to the 10 most reviewed stories, within each section? So that there is only a limited number listed, forcing people to venture further when they have finished those top ten.

      • dr.girlfriend

        07/11/2012 at 3:52 am

Oh, being able to sort by “Favorites” is a great idea…sometimes stories have lots of reviews because they are just tons of little chapters, etc. but the number of “Favorites” seems like a nice indicator of how many people actually enjoyed the story, and less subject to inflation (e.g., someone pumping up reviews with a guest account, if that’s even possible). I’ve often wished I could see like the 200 most popular story across all fandoms…sometimes good fic is just worth reading, even if you’re not familiar with the “world.” But it would be especially nice to be able to see the top 20 or 100 or whatever stories in any particular fandom.

RSS feed has been cut down to 50 entries when it used to be 200. This limits its usefulness in tracking or viewing new updates. You can’t even use it for overnight catch up of new entries as more than that number are added in an 5 hour timeframe. Please consider expanding the number.

Can we go back to how we could review before? I already submitted a comment about this, but I’ll repeat it here:

Can I make a complaint about the new review set-up? IT STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the review box was in a separate window, I could type my review for long chapters or one-shots while I scrolled through said chapter/one-shot. Now that the review box is fixed at the bottom, I’d have to keep scrolling UP and DOWN if I want to leave my VERY long and VERY descriptive reviews for the author!! It’s so TEDIOUS!!

Plus there’s the fact that we have to remember to unchecked those boxes every time we review!! It’s so CONFUSING!!!! Can there be someway to show a user that they already have the story on one or more of their lists?

Can we PLEASE go back to the old window version?! I’m not alone in my opinion! A LOT of my friends agree with me about this!! If this doesn’t change soon, I’ll go stark-raving MAD!!!!!!!

    • alixe75

      07/10/2012 at 10:41 am

I like this new way because it incite people to review (and for non english spoken people, it’s more understandable).
To review during the reading, you can open the chapter page twice, on two separate windows

(And I agree with you for the cheked boxes)

      • -.-

        07/10/2012 at 2:08 pm

I doubt it actually incite people be more inclined to give reviews. And what does non english spoken people got to do with the new review system? Logically, nothing.

The new review setup does cause a slight inconvenience to those that write descriptive reviews as they read or those who have short term memory problems. You don’t have to scroll down UP & DOWN or even opening the chapter page TWICE. Just open up the NOTEPAD program, type your review there and copy/paste it in the review box when you’re done reading. Easy solution.

Those checked boxes to follows both the story and author is a somewhat of an annoyance. Not every story/author is worth or need following. A bad story will probably makes me give a suggestion but I doubt I’ll want to put it in my watchlist. A completed story whether it’s a multi-chapters or a one-shot does not need to be watched. May I suggest that those checked boxes be unchecked by default? Let the reader themselves check those boxes if they desire to follow any story/author.

    • sleepyowlet

      07/10/2012 at 5:04 pm

Or you could just open the text editor and write your review there while scrolling through the story at your leisure. It’s something I always do, because sometimes the internet eats my replies/reviews. Which is doubly annoying when they are long and detailed. Then I just copypasta them into the review box and done.

    • Davey

      07/10/2012 at 11:29 pm

Actually, I’d like to second Atem’s Sister Atea. I like the schema where you can be writing a review in a completely separate window, and scrolling around in the story to find your points in the main window. I fail to see how having both on the same page is useful to anyone (especially (sorry, alixe75) non-English speakers (if I’m reviewing something that’s German, I _definitely_ want separate Writing and Reading windows!).

Davey : Young readers, which don’t know the read and review system will never folow a link they don’t understand the meaning, but understand they can write something in a big blank square. You can’t imagine how many time I read on forums ‘It takes months that I understand what le review link was for”. However, I understand very well it is not a point for you (I know 80% people are english spoken here).
Well, if you reviewing something that’s German, it might be because you are german spoken, so I thing it’s the same that when you review englis text. The difference is that you don’t understand links and how works you account.

sleepyowlet and -_- : And I think Notepad/text editor solution is better than mine

Even I have tried the new review button a few times myself and I’m used to the old way myself. It would be nice for my readers to notice the new way so they could review, favorite, etc. but in the past they haven’t said anything about my stories. I thought maybe this would be a way for them to give me more reviews when I would like to get more but they’re still silent. Would there be a way for me to get more reviews, favorites, etc. this way when the readers are still silent? I’m sick of the silence since the readers have been this way since I joined the site in 2009. My plan is to go big when readers love to be quiet. Check out my stories if you haven’t yet! I’m both a reader and writer. I posted one story yesterday afternoon and I have never posted it to the site before so feel free to check it out!

I’d hate to bring it up again, but the automatically-clicked alerts are kind of annoying 😐

Also I might have seen a comment about this somewhere, but a rating system would be fantastic for stories. Like a scale of 1 to 10? So we can sort through all the stories to find stuff worth our time easier 🙂

Also I was wondering if you could set up an “exclude” option when we’re searching different archives? For example, I’d really love it if I could search for not-romance stories, especially in romance-heavy fandoms when I’m just generally searching for anything that isn’t romance. That’d be really helpful 🙂

Just throwing this out there, but when I heard we were gonna have images for our stories I immediately thought of the banners harrypotterfanfiction dot com has. Those are fantastic, and while what you have now is pretty cool…they’re really small, and there’s not much we can do with it :/ I don’t know if you’re planning massive revisions to the site in the future, but if there’s room, you might want to consider that, because there’s so much more we can do with large images than the little ones we have now D:

Thanks so much for the fantastic site! These are just small ideas that I think could make the site even better.I’ve been using your site for 6 years now and I’ve rarely been disappointed 🙂

While on the one hand I like the rating scales – fanfiction is a place where people can test new waters and I’ve seen people grow tremendously in their writing skills. I think the rating scales might end up hurting new writers and cause them to stop writing

When I made my account (3 years ago) I didn’t need to think twice about disabling anonymous reviews because I didn’t want to deal with people who were going to take time out of their busy lives to post flame reviews. While your “moderate guest” reviews was helpful to those who do allow guest reviews, it does nothing for those who didn’t want guest reviews in the first place. In order to moderate a guest review, I am now required to read through vitriol that I’d avoided for three years… So moderation doesn’t really help me, or anyone else who understands that bullies enjoy anonymity…

    07/11/2012 at 1:29 am

Could you please allow “disable anonymous reviews” again? Trolls do not care if their reviews are published..they only care that the author sees the review, which is what the new system is allowing. I appreciate that you allow the moderate feature, but this is not stopping the trolls. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Please get rid of the auto checking for “Follow story” “Follow author” when reviewing. It’s very annyoing.

also…. why Can’t I remove the messages in my outbox no matter how many time’s I click the del button? I’ve got quite a backlog.

    • Kikurukina Bal Des'cagel

      07/11/2012 at 2:26 pm

I second the suggestion about leaving the ‘Follow story’ and ‘Follow author’ check boxes. Not every review I leave on a story means I wish to continue reading the story.

  15. April/Cathylove

    07/11/2012 at 3:22 am

Could we please, I mean, pretty please, be able to remove signed reviews? It should be our right as an author of our stories to do that, or at least hide them. We should also be able to hide stories so only those with a link or something can view them. A friends feature would also be nice, like DeviantArt and Facebook, etc, have.
Also, a canon/fanon option for certain fandoms such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, etc. Fandoms that have no real plot, like Hetalia – Axis Powers shouldn’t count. I know that’s alot to consider, but I hope you take it all into consideration.

    Hey guys,

I’ve heard a bunch of ideas from the other commenters, and I definitely agree with the rating system and the favorites idea, but I have another I want, being an author pained by the Document Manager system. PLEASE, set it up so you can make folders to put related documents in! I hate having to look through all my High School of the Dead story chapters to find the one Mass Effect one-shot document! Being able to sort the documents together would help greatly. A folder system would be ideal, but any sorting system would be good. Thanks guys, and keep up the good work! We all appreciate it!

Just to know… why do you need to find your published chapters so often ? (and why do you keep them in the document manager ?

      • Ki-nee-chan

        07/11/2012 at 8:54 pm

Why not? Its convenient if you use multiple computers or keep getting reviews saying “There’s a typo!” or “I was confused at….”

or just for going through adding details and fixing little errors that you may not have noticed on your first couple reads.

You can have them there for 2 months which is plenty of time.

(I don’t know Just another Cynical student’s reasons) but those would be mine. however I don’t keep nearly as many stories in my manager I guess ’cause I function just fine without folders.

      • Just Another Cynical Student

        07/11/2012 at 8:58 pm

You hit it spot on. I keep my chapters there so I can correct any mistakes. That being said, the folders would definitely help. (:D)

        Ah, ok.
Just Another Cynical Student : It’s right that reload a chapter in Doc Manager with the EXP link is bored. It’s easier to keep it in place.

Ki-nee-chan : I have all my chapter on google documents, which allow me to access my text from every where, keep all the versions of the text, share it with my betas… and class it in folders.

(not to say that my way is better, only that I practice differently)

I’m glad that there is more direct way to contact and see other people’s comments about the site. I find it odd that you guys are late to social media scene though.

I do not know if this is a coding error of some sort, but I have problems with deleting highlighted text in the forum posts. Whenever I highlight a sentence that I need to erase, my entire post gets deleted and I have to press CRTL+Z to undo the erase and delete each character one by one. This is at most a hassle and time-consuming, worthy of a mini-heart attack when I type long replies. This problem only happens in the forums.

I would like to suggest a quotation button for the forums because sometimes I need to address multiple people and it would be easier if there was a quote button that automatically brought to me to a reply page with the original message in quotations already.

Could we please get a ‘like’ button for stories? And then a public listing of how many ‘likes’ a story has? Thanks! I think that would help since many people don’t want to leave a review even if they like a story.

And I also like the idea of sorting by number of reviews.

The new horizontal rules are so light that you can barely see them. Kind of defeats the purpose of using them to separate scenes when they’re almost invisible, don’t you think? Please darken them a little at least.

    • brendan2k5

      07/12/2012 at 12:57 am

Or better yet, have MULTIPLE options to separate scenes. I’ve had instances in which Horizontal Lines don’t show at all and have been forced to use “xXx” with which to separate scenes.

Also as someone who has taken a web design class and is knowledgeable about HTML, I am annoyed that you use the table tag in HTML in a way that will break screen readers. When will the use of obsolete code stop?????? From a HTML standpoint, I don’t like this website.

We REALLY need a OC Selection in the big ones! (Naurto, Twilight, Hunger Games)

It’s very annoying that Harry Potter gets it, but no other big fandom does.

So many fics don’t get searched because they don’t have characters.

We need OC slection for our characters!

There are some people that search for fics, but can’t find them because they can’t find it because they can’t choose OC as their character.

Other times a fic doesn’t get read because it doesn’t have characters, but it’s just OC and nobody knows!

It would also help readers know pairing before they read.

It could clean up organization in archieves and searches.

There are so many OC fics that can’t be found because they don’t have OC selection.

The “OC” character choice should be added to ALL character lists, ESPECIALLY Twilight, Hunger Games, Naurto, ETC.

    • lord_spyridon

      07/11/2012 at 9:35 pm

I think for the OMC/OFC, you have to request it using the the email for new categories/character requests.

I think those stories without any characters listed should have their own way of searching. Otherwise, you have to search in the normal parameters which will include the stories that have specific characters listed. That would be extremely tedious.

The automatic checks on the reviews can be annoying for both the reader and writer. Now I know that some of my followers could just be accidental clicks. That’s kinda depressing.

As unrealistic and impossible as this sounds, it’s too bad that when you block certain readers from leaving comments, you also can’t block them from seeing the story, period. I’ve had dealings with a plagiarist stealing from me in the fandom I write in and I would love to be able to block her and her pals from ever seeing a single story of mine again. I also agree that the ‘fave’ check boxes need to be cleared by default, not every story I review on is worth following and most of the writers I follow on a regular basis, I check out their work daily to see if they’ve updated, so a notice that they’ve posted new things is redundant. And I think it would be nice if we could delete signed reviews…not that I’m not ever happy to hear all opinions on my work, negative and positive both, but I’ve had a former friend decide the best way to get even with me when I refused her “help” in “bettering my work” was to flame me and make it a truly nasty personal attack that derided me as a human being and made fun of my physical disabilities that I preferred to keep out of the public eye. So I would love to be able to delete that review, but because she did it signed, I can’t. It would also be nice that when emailng support, someone actually bothered to answer. I’ve emailed several times over various issues and have only gotten a reply once. The admins over on WWOMB and AO3 are usually very prompt at getting back with you if you have problems but ffnet’s support system seems nonexistent. Would also be great if the site had an instruction page on how to use the various features on here, a lot of newbies come on and don’t know how to work things like the document manager or the edit feature, so a basic instruction page would be nice because not everyone knows how to use the site.

I’m also going to repeat my request for blog integration for author stories. Especially the very popular ones. It’ll further remove the need people have of in some cases taking up a page’s worth of chapter content replying to reviews and commenting, etc.

It would also be a meaningful means of letting the author’s followers know if they’re not gonna be able to update for a while or something. I know I can’t possibly be the only person who’s seen this across both sites.

Finally, I’m surprised we don’t have a Author Mentoring Program. I know we have the Beta Reader System but the Author Mentorship Program would be a means of experienced authors, editors and readers of helping someone improve their skills or just write a good story on a particular category/subject. In other words, it’ll help struggling authors in more ways than the Beta Reader program could.

That last idea would rely on a Like/Dislike system (or even a 1-5 stars system) so…yeah xD

You can use the a forum on your acccount in place of a blog. This is where I reply anonymous reviews.

You’d be surprised how many people don’t even know the sites have forums, let alone how to make use of them. I’m talking about authors as well as readers/reviewers. I’ve tried making forums myself with little success for other reasons. Just because it works for you doesn’t mean it’ll work for everyone else.

And you can create up to 5 forums, not one.

The fact that link to our forums don’t appear on our profil doesn’t help, i must admit.

I don’t know where to post this question and cannot find where to contact admin’s so here goes:

I had content on the site when it was AFF and now all my information is gone, with my reviews are they just GONE? And if so can I repost the stories and let people know that it is now available for download on kindle?

Not looking to sound ungrateful for the hard work being done on the site I thought I’d ask here if there was any sort of update on the status of the current RSS feed absence?

I _ass_u_me_d that it would be smarter to put it in a place tagged by ‘RSS’ already.
