“Resolved filtering problem for some combination of crossover categories (FF only).” only that?
    II was expecting more ._.

Don’t worry, their super-duper-mega-computer-with-sophicated-softwares is working 24/7 churning out codes that will turn our fanfictiondotnet surfing experience out of this world. Just you wait, once the uber-techie-genius wakes up from his 5 minutes nap he will implement more updates.

I imagine, if I were in their position, that they’re banging their heads against the monitors wondering how to handle the constant feedback coming in. But then, I tend to stress very easily 🙂

I was wondering, how about we see the new image covers for fics on the author’s profile page? Seems like a waste to not show them there…

Can you make it so that we can sort by words in the summary? Like, if I search OC, the first things to show up just say “OC Story,” and it would be easier to find good stories if I could make sure all the results have at least an entire sentence for a summary.

    • Stella

      07/16/2012 at 11:36 am

I think there should be a minimum limit of words a summary should have when you submit a new story. Something like 5 or 10 words as a limit should be enough to encourage people to write a proper summary for their stories.

      • Skysong

        07/16/2012 at 9:15 pm

Stella, you could reduce the summary to one word and still some authors would be unable to write a coherent summary. If an author cannot write a meaningful, concise summary, do you really want to try and read the story?

      07/16/2012 at 11:38 am

Or, you can search it using the search engine. What you want is probably a tagging system. I don’t know whether fanfiction have a tagging system that writers use to categorize their story further. But having one should make searching more efficient. It also free space in the summary of all those labels.

    • ALT

      07/16/2012 at 12:24 pm

Is that not what the search feature is for? There are sorting filters that can be applied inside the search engine to find such stories. I think adding that to the main category list would just make things way too complicated to view.

      • kat

        07/16/2012 at 9:26 pm

The search feature decides that the most relative results are the ones that only contain the word that I searched for. Which is why I want to search “OC” and then filter it by number of words in the summary.
The search feature also decides that when I search for “Sai,” I’m obviously not searching for the character by that name, but the word “says,” despite it’s completely different spelling. Which was quite a pain when I’m looking for C2 groups about him.

Why aren’t mobile FF and FP letting me log in? I put my email and password and the security code in, and then I press login, but all it says is “You must be logged in to access this page.” Login works on regular site, but not on mobile site…

Hey, totally random question now that we have a place to ask them. Why are double punctuations edited out? Sometimes a sentence just needs to end in “?!”, and dashes showing up as hyphens is a little odd also.

      07/17/2012 at 9:16 am

I’ll second that! Long strings of question marks and exclamation marks is one thing, but two of them is quite normal, isn’t it?

        @ ^_^

Are you aware of the disaster the tagglng system has become at An Archive of Our Own? They have to have “tag wranglers” to consolidate, organize, and integrate the multiple tags that users are assigning to their stories. Multiply that by at *least* a thousand, and you’ll have complete and utter chaos (especially when you consider those authors who lack of proper spelling skills).

Ok, ok you’re doing this for readers. Still no OC in every category…… pleaseeeee Hunger Games and Twilight OC choice… please?? Ive sent PMs into category and had many other others do the same, but FF hasn’t even responded or added it… how do we contact for it? Im getting annoyed with asking..

    • Izraill

      07/17/2012 at 10:43 am

Yeah, in most fandoms (if not all) using OCs is very common, and we can’t find thoose stories when we want them.

    07/16/2012 at 1:38 pm

I still STRONGLY believe that we need an OC selectin in the Twilight section!
You recently updated the search to make it easier on readers. Good, now make it perfect to search Twilight fics by addding OC to the character lists!
Readers don’t read some Twilight fics because it says “Paul/Jacob” sothey think it’s a slash fic. In relaity, it’s a Paul/OC fic, but since the author can’t select OC, they have to select Jacob as the second character because it’s the third main character and they want to fill in the box with something! It’s inconvient for writers because they’re losing reads and readers because we don’t know if it’s an OC fic or not.
Before you think “use unknown” well that doesn’t tell us if an OC, because a lot of authors use unknown meaning that the pairing is a surprise! and if it’s an OC fic, we want to know! If we love OCs, we want specifically OC fics to search up, not a all canon un-specified pairing!!
Harry Potter has one and COME ON that’s not fair at all! Naurto and Twilight are the second and third biggest fandoms, and Twilight has a TON of fics like the example I mentioned above. So please add OC to the character list!
Thanks! I’d LOVE if you’d PLEASE do that!

    • Izraill

      07/17/2012 at 10:45 am

I agree, that should be an OC selection for EVERY fandom, I have to use unknown and I don’t like disappointing the readers (because most of them don’t read the summary)

    07/16/2012 at 1:53 pm

Can I raise something in relation to the visible “follower/favorite” stats?

The thing is, my stories now don’t attract such high numbers in these fields, because a lot of regular readers have already put my on favorite author or author alert, which makes faving or following the story reduntant. This had potential to depress my overall stats for each new story, although it’s probably the same for a lot of established writers. However, I wonder whether it might make them a little more accurate if the author figures were merged in with the individual story figures.

I am going to make a suggestion here. Throw out this annoying blog and replace it with a forum system. Make your announcements to a locked forums so we can read and comment on them in another forum.

You sit there on high, making your pronouncements, people comment and move off topic, bringing up other issues which are generally ignored by the admins, or worse, never addressed because the day is over and now we’re on a new page with a new topic.

If you really want and care about feedback, you’ll reconsider how you’re reaching out and see that unless you continue to revisit older announcement pages, all of our comments are being lost due to time.

Give us a forum where we can have a real, open and meaningful dialog with the operators please.

    • Kat

      07/16/2012 at 6:48 pm

That would be lovely. As it is right now, it feels like the admins are only responding to queries based on things they’re already planning on implementing. Anything outside of their plans seems to get ignored.

    • tiquatue

      07/16/2012 at 8:12 pm

If the forum is locked, no one will be able to comment, just read. Plus, this blog is linked to twitter by WordPress software. Probably not possible with’s software. On top of these, there’s the fact that, if the site goes down or has accessibility problems, then where’s the forum?

The primary reason for the blog — like the twitter — isn’t dialog. It’s news. Up-to-date news and announcements on code pushes and new features (and on site downtime) that we haven’t gotten for ages, if ever. Dialog is a happy side-effect.

      • bobmin356

        07/16/2012 at 8:55 pm

Dialog isn’t a happy side effect here. For the bulk of people, responding to these announcements is akin to tossing a message into a bottle and throwing it into a sea of bottles.

I’m not a Twit and I don’t use twitter, so it being up or down doesn’t affect me. If FFN is down, that impacts me, then I’ll be concerned.

A forum would allow for a true dialog, which is what we do not have here. We have people making comments and throwing out ideas and rarely does anyone say anything about them.

It is not unusual to lock a forum and use another part of the same board to allow commentary. Many of the MMO’s publish their patch notes in locked forums and let people comment in their general forum. I don’t see a problem with that at all. What I want is for the admins to open up a means of us actually having a dialog with them rather than this blog. By tomorrow most people won’t even bother to read the posts to today’s comments and this comment, along with all the rest might as well be deleted.

        07/16/2012 at 10:18 pm

AO3 tagging become what it is now because there is little control and the simple fact that people tends to overcomplicated things. Fixed tags does exists. It’s not impossible to manage labels as long as you keep ’em simple, clinical and basic where possible. Restrict users from creating tags, reviews and approves tags only if it’s acceptable. It’s all about a lil bit of managing.

      • tiquatue

        07/17/2012 at 12:00 am

Actually, bobmin356, what I meant with my comment about twitter is, if is down, we can get the news on why, how long an outage will last, and when the site is back up. Same thing coming here. Because this isn’t necessarily connected to the servers that run (and fp, too). They are news outlets that don’t rely on the site itself to report to us.

Have you seen the comments on the other posts here? Can you imagine Xing and his minions spending all their time answering every post? All day long (because, after all, is an international venture running around the clock)? When would they have time to do anything else… like upgrade the site? I think the overwhelming response they’ve gotten since the blog opened is part of the reason why there is no on-site forum for discussion and dialog. There are hundreds of thousands of users potentially wanting to discuss (and beat to death) every decision the admins make. I don’t know about you, but I’d be head desking within 48 hours.

Another question – is there a way to ban a user on fanfic? I was just looking in the ‘just in’ category and 6 “stories” are by the same person who just wrote “#OCCUPY FANFIC” over and over – I don’t even want to go in to each story to report it but it is frustrating for both readers and writers

There’s an issue with the word count filtering. It currently is broken down by > 1000, > 5000, etc. But if you’re looking for short works you’ll see everything > 1000 words, everything > 5000 words. It isn’t a very useful sort option.

It’d be more useful if it were < 1000, < 5000, < 10000, etc. Or even better would be ranges.

    I like the recent changes.

    • John

      07/16/2012 at 8:33 pm

That’s actually genius with the ranges idea. Have the categories be like: 0-1000, 1000-5000, 5000-20000 etc… The at the end, have 100000+. Amazing idea, Nancy.

Picking Cyth’s request, it would be a good thing if we had a better way to report abuse. While I understand that the massive size of the site implicates that lots of abuse reports arrive at the central everyday, I think that there is a way to improve it (theoretically, I don’t know how it works), because I read many complains that many people report fics that violates the TOS but they’re not heard.

For example, there are a lot of fanfics, like the unending Aladdin “parodies” (that aren’t even parodies, they are remakes) of the Cartoon X-overs section that has the same format: the “author” goes to a site that has the script of the movie, copy-paste to the document manager, change the names (for example, “Aladdin” becomes “Danny Phantom”, etc.) and publish and call it literature. I say this because I did this once and then I realized that this is wrong and re-edited my own story, but there is an entire genre of fanfics that has this format. While I know that there is a thin line between plagiarism and using some parts of the dialogue of the original source to improve the understanding of the fic, sometimes this goes beyond acceptable and the overall quality of the fandom goes down. I’d like to report some of them, that are too obvious, but I’m not sure if my report will be heard.

Also this is a problem in the Total Drama series section, with the “parodies” that aren’t parodies and the submit your OC fics.

  16. seiht

    07/16/2012 at 7:57 pm

Okay, maybe I’m a bit silly for this, but I’d absolutely love an option to filter out a genre. It’s a bit of nuisance wading through pages upon pages of romance when I want to read fics from series I enjoyed as childhood.

The blog’s a step in the right direction . . .but bobmin356 hit the nail on the head with the everyone posting other issues here and a proper forum making more sense.

    07/16/2012 at 9:09 pm

I would very much like to be able to sort slash fiction from non-slash fiction. It’s incredibly annoying having to search through thousands of stories, many of which do not specify slash in their summaries when it would be such an easy category division to put into the publication details and be able to sort on. Not everyone wants to read slash.

The search engine currently returns all stories with any keyword. When a title is known, it’s also aggravating having to narrow down the parameters until the story is found. Can “Title” be included in the search options with an All Word search string for the database?

    • ShikiKira

      07/20/2012 at 9:14 pm

Wouldn’t it be easier just to select the two characters you want paired up to find your story? I know that just selecting the characters you want give you a large variety of stories you may like. I don’t think you actually need a specific division for slash stories.

      • Skysong

        07/20/2012 at 9:37 pm

Actually that’s not a solution, since the SPN fanfic section doesn’t even have the option to select an OC character, and if I want to read a plain hunt story, with Dean and Sam, for example, I don’t want 6000 thousand stories of Dean/Sam. A simple category in the Genre listing for slash would solve the problem much more elegantly. It might not get rid of all of the slash stories but where authors are responsible, it would get rid of some of them.

I’m not even sure this will be heard, but I’ll give it my best shot.
I’m on chapter 19 on one of my fanfic stories and it won’t show up, even after waiting two hours. I recently got a PM from a friend begging for help with the same problem and I don’t know what to do other than say, ‘I don’t know!’. I have no idea what’s going on, but would you PLEASE fix it, for me and my friend?
