7/19 Bug Hunter: The Missing Connection

We have recently received sporadic reports from some having inconsistent browser issues with the login area. Specifically, some users are reporting browser disconnection errors when performing admin actions in the login section.

As result of the haphazard nature of these reports and the random frequency of these events, we need your help to gather more data so we can find a common baseline to form a solution.

If you are experiencing or have experienced the above problem, please comment on this blog post with the following info:

  1. Exact error displayed by the browser when the error happened.
  2. Browser used and version. Example, Google Chrome v14.
  3. Country Location. We highly suspect this to be a network issue from certain countries but we could be wrong .
  4. The type of internet connection: DSL, Cable Internet, Fiber Internet, Misc Broadband,  4G Mobile, 3G Mobile, or 2G Mobile.
  5. The name of your internet provider.

With enough data points/responses, we can solve this modern-day mystery.

      Now all the texts in my posts are being bundled together and I can’t underline, bold, or use italics on anything.

      That and I still keep having to log in every 2 hours or so just to keep posting and then it will erase all my texts I put into the post!!!!

      The same thing is happening to everyone else I’ve talked to so that’s over 20 people here!

    I’ve been having problems opening the log in page since I started using a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. Yesterday 18/07 the problem seemed to have been solved. I logged in without problem, logged out again and logged in again later again no problem. Today I can’t log in yet again.
    No messages only a page loading with the mention ‘Connecting’.
    Browser used Firefox 14.0.1 (same problem with Explorer9 and also Google Chrome)
    Country: Belgium
    Internet Connection: cable internet
    Internet Provider: Telenet

    I’ve been having the same problem as Be Rose with the same exact issue except on all browsers including the one I predominantly use, Google Chrome. I’m rarely able to log on using my laptop at home running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. I do not have the problem with my phone on the same wi-fi connection either.

    The only problem I’ve had is that a few times my pen name has shown up in the box but when I’ve posted, it automatically logged me out (and it was not 14 days) and posted my review as “guest”. I don’t even get an error message or a “would you like to sign in” like I used to (when the review boxes popped out).

      1. I get a couple errors for the site: empty responses “Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.” is the most common one.
      2. Google Chrome v20

      Same problem as Cyth, but it was happening randomly all over the site, especially if I visited the forums, or the review page for a story (my own and others). But it seems to have stabilised in the last few days.

      1. No error message

      2. IE8 and once or twice on another computer running IE9. Also Firefox – I think it was 14.0 but I’ve updated since then so I’m not sure

    The wepage is not available. Google chrome can not load the webpage because it’s taking too long to respond.
    I’ve had this error ever since last month. It’s the same problem with Explorer 8 and Firefox

      Strange error. Are you still getting this after typing in “” or just randomly? If you type in in your browser window, it should route you to automatically and not this welcome to page.

    I’m getting this problems as well.

    1. Time has run out—it goes to the connection was reset page
    2. I use Firefox as my main server because of Adblocker plus.
    3. My Internet server is Belkin, so wireless 3G of course.
    4. I’m from the US. This has been happening to me for some time now, it would be nice if the problem was fixed. I have a feeling it might be because there are too many people on at the same time 😦

    I get this sometimes when I click on the next chapter or try searching for something, and if i wait and try again the page will open but not always. it started happening about a week ago. after this:

    "On July 12th, 2012, @1AM US Pacific Time, @4AM US Eastern Time, the login area will be disabled for 15 to 30 minutes while an important upgrade is performed. During this time, reviewing and publishing features will be inaccessible."

      Your error is caused by internet filtering by your country or ISP. There is nothing we can do for this.

    Google Chrome could not load the webpage because took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this webpage later.
    Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
    Add Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall’s or antivirus software’s settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
    If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.     Here is an odd combo. Typing from phone, so forgive the grammar.

    I was unable to access from my desktop. Using Windows 7 ultimate x64. Used browsers Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer and Opera. No connection, stuck on waiting.

    Out of curiosity I connected with my phone and it worked perfectly. Both using My home network, phone on 802.11n and not 3G.

    Flushdns changes nothing, nore does router port swapping. I would give a tracert result if I had the chance. The last reachable hop before timeout is on the 209.

    I was trying to reach a story on my desktop, but I was stuck in a waiting loop. It didn’t time out in a timely fashion, so I suspected my network.

    After a bit of painful troubleshooting, I tried my phone on a whim. It connected just fine. NOT on a mobile connection (HSDPA,EDGE,3G/4G), but on the home network’s wireless.


    Desktop OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Desktop browsers attempted: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera (no success on desktop)
    Phone: Motorola Droid X running Android OS 2.3.4, success on default browser.

      We have tweaked our network settings just a bit to see if it helps. Can you test from your desktop again and see if everything is back to normal? And if not, another tracert would be great. Thanks.

    I have attempted to load a new chapter several times this am from different browsers as well as using two separate computers but despite getting a message saying that the chapter was loaded it can not be found anywhere. Not even in the live preview section. Is there a bug this am preventing updating stories? (BTW: I’ve been on the site long enough to not make the usual Newbie mistakes. I’m just curious if anyone else has had this issue as well or if it has been reported. I’ll attempt to load once more later on.)

      I’m having a similar problem here, although this might not have anything to do with the login problems. Every time I try to open the chapter I’ve just recently published, there’s an error that keeps saying, “Chapter not found. Please check to see you are not using an outdated url.”. It’s been around two hours since I’ve uploaded it; it hasn’t been too long a wait, but I’m hoping it’ll be fixed soon. 🙂

        I’ve been having the same problem. Yesterday I uploaded a story and several people read and reviewed it, etc., but after a few hours the story seemed to disappear.(Nothing but ‘Story Not Found’ when I click it) After countless attempts to modify the content, I gave up, deleted it and reposted it once more. It was working fine, but this morning it seems to be gone again. Advice?

    My email alerts were disabled when my email went down on Monday afternoon. The problem was fixed Monday night, but I cannot get my alerts restored.

    I’ve checked the box that says “Yes, I have read this notice and fixed my email account” and clicked the button that says “Acknowledge Notice and Resume Email Delivery” numerous times; I’ve followed the link that says “Once you have resolved your email issues, you can re-renable alert features here”; I’ve gone to the alert section of my account and made sure everything was checked appropriately; I’ve made extra sure that “” is allowed access to my email; I sent an email to support on Tuesday. Still no alerts, and the error message saying the alerts were disabled on Monday shows up every time I click to a new page in my account.

    Is there anything further I can do to get my alerts restored?

    Thxs for fixing this bug, as it’s been happening to me over these past few days. I could log in but I was having to refresh pages to see states as they kept timing out.

    Every time I try loading a document page it says the connection was reset or timed out. I have Firefox and I’ve tried it on Internet explorer, same thing happens there. Not sure if it’s from the web browsers themselves or if it’s our WI-FI connection. We use Belkin.

    I tried to publish a new chapter to one of my stories this morning, but it won’t appear at all. I tried replacing the chapter with itself, (cause I don’t know what else to do.) and it says that the changes were successful, but when I go to look at it to double-check, it’s not there. There are supposed to be nineteen chapters, but there’s only eighteen. What’s wrong??

    Still unable to access, here’s the latest tracert. For anyone else that would like to try, it’s simple to do. Open your run prompt by clicking Start>Run or pressing Windows key + R. Type CMD in the Run Command Prompt and press enter.

    To perform a tracert, type tracert . In this case, tracert Report with the last IP address before the Request timed out messages appear. You can also send these to a textfile with tracert > %yourHardDriveHere%:/tracert.txt

    Onto my results, oddly enough I receive an immediate error when trying visit with the IP address

    404 Not Found

    The resource requested could not be found on this server!
    Powered By LiteSpeed Web Server

    When using the address given by tracert, I get a DNS setup complete page:

    If you have just configured HTTP Redirection then your DNS is already changed but it may take up to 60 seconds for your redirection to go live.
    If you have just recently removed your HTTP Redirection then your DNS is already changed on the name server but your system (computer) still has this IP (the redirection IP) cached. Please give this up to one hour before it is completely removed from your local cache.
    If you have not just recently configured or changed your HTTP Redirection then you may be seeing this page for one of the following reasons:

    the page has been improperly configured (you may have a loop in your configuration)
    or the account has expired.

    Not sure if this is reporting for fanfiction’s DNS or my own. It could be an ISP issue, but I’m unfortunately mostly on the hardware symptons side than the deeply experience Networking symptoms. I’ve used a dns release/flushdns/renew on my stack, willing to try anything else.

    Again, my ISP is Time Warner Cable through their Roadrunner service.

      1) You need to do a tracert to ip or Not without the www.

      2) You cannot access with but with thus your 404 error.

    I’m having the same problem with trying to post a chapter. It says it’s successful but it doesn’t post. And the link doesn’t work. This happened around 3:30C 7/20.

    I don’t know if this will help or not, but it might shine some light on the issue.

    I tried to check on Firefox and received this message:
    Oops! We cannot find this page on
    Most likely you are accessing the site with an outdated link.

    I was able to get to the website by using Chrome. When I went back into Firefox, I noticed that Firefox was trying to access through HTTPS. Once I erased the s to get just http in front of the URL, I was able to get to load through HTTP.

    The browser I was using is Firefox 14.01. I’m located in the Midwest of the US, and my internet is WiFi DSL from Century Link.

      This is an firefox issue. When you manually type in a link, firefox is trying to load the wrong link. Please all your non-login links should be http:// and not https://.

    my entire story is missing. loaded it, reloaded it, tried a number of things and when I click on the title…It says page not found. URL NOT FOUND. I also sent in this issue to support this monring, and nothing. No reply, no help, nothing. So far my story is only avaible in my live preview window. Something is wrong and not my computer. Happens on both home computers.

    Experiencing the same issue with chapter uploads. It does show in live preview for me, and the chapter count on the story changes, but there’s o chapter in the drop down box and the URL displays the type 1 error message which tells you to wait fifteen minutes. Various attempts made form different browsers and machines.

    I have tried to upload a chapter twice and had the same problem as jadedphoenixburning, cyth, and mille libri, I’ve been receiving PMs all day because people who have me on alert are getting the message I’ve posted a new chapter, but it’s not there. I can see it in live preview…but no where else. I’ve also hadthe same problem with alerts as mille libri, but I solved it by changing the email address associated with my fanfiction account.

    As of 7:35 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on July 20, I can’t can’t even reach the main page of the site (on my computer). I am still able to get on the mobile site and am able to get onto the regular site by viewing it on my phone.

    1. It tells me that the page “Can’t be displayed,” or that the link can’t be found. Prior to 7:35, I could view it with no problem.

    This does not pertain to this problem about adding chapters, but for some reason every time I try to go to a different page on the webpage comes up and says that IE could not display this webpage. It tells me that a server for is down and I cannot do anything but wait it out. This happened last month 3-4 times but it was late at night. Could you tell me why is doing this?

    I have tried to get updates on the stories I have been following and I keep getting the same message. Either my url is old or to the server os busy and to check back in 15 mins. I tried using both firefox and google chrome on several computers and I get the same message.

        I’ve been having the same problem while trying to read one of my friend’s stories. I got an email alert around 4:30 Central time today, but I got the same error message as the others above. It’s at the top of my favorites list, it’s listed as 20 chapters and the word count seems to have gone up, but I can’t access the chapter :/

    I’ve had this probelm before, but I don’t have any URLs or anything at the moment. Up until now, I just thought it was bad luck.

    There is something I would like to ask everyone else though. It’s not relevant, but I thought I’d ask. Do the headers on the left side of your profiles look even more contracted than normal or is it just me? If it’s just me, well then I guess I’ll live with it. If it’s others, then what do you think of that?

      You aren’t alone. The navigation buttons on the left (Account, Publish, Private Messaging) are much narrower than they previously were for me, too. The ‘new’ in green italics next to ‘Image Manager’ even runs into the plus sign to expand the selection.

      Not sure if it’s part of a new look or if has something to do with the troubleshooting going on at the moment.

    Huh, so I’m not the only one who having problems with published chapters and stories.

    I should let you know the same problem happened when I tried to publish a new story but not a new chapter that I submitted first.

    I published this story twice and one of my followers had read and reviewed it. Soon after, the story just vanished and was replaced with the error.

    I don’t know what is wrong, but I hope you can get to the bottom of this annoying problem.

    I’m currently using Firefox 12.0, from USA. am on a wifi connection, not sure what the ISP is as am using it mainly at my office. However, I have previously attempted this at the public library, also, where DSL is used, on Internet Explorer 8 (it’s a library) and at an internet cafe, where Wifi is used, with the Google Chrome and Firefox 12 browsers.

    I’ve been getting this error on any login related pages, but recently am also getting it while just browsing for stories.

    I’m still having the login problems with Firefox; specifically the kind where I still can’t access any of the features in the menu. I managed to find something of a work-around for not being able to get to the sign-in page, but I still want the option of actually doing things while I’m there.

    I’m using Firefox 14.1 to log in.

    This is where it gets interesting…since I have absolutely no idea. I’m using my University’s Wi-Fi? Every other website is loading without a problem…

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated? …This is really starting to get on my nerves. It was working fine all day (after a weekend of not doing much) and it’s now throwing the error at me again.

    Exact error displayed by the browser when the error happened: 408 request timeout, connection timeout
    Browser used and version: safari, firefox
    Country Location: USA
    The type of internet connection: wireless

    It happens only when I try to manage my stories 😦

    I’m using my phone but when I click on a story i automatically go to some site of lite speed saying there’s an error and I tried selecting other stories buti still keep going to ‘lite speed error webpage’ please help I want to read stories 😦
