7/23 Performance

23 Jul

  1. During our recent bug hunting  process we were able to find and resolve a performance bottleneck which has improved page processing speed by 10% on average. The increased speed will be most noticeable in the forums, the login area, and the mobile site.

  1. Safari and iOS users having issues posting to forums after our last update.
  2. A short window yesterday where the captcha system would not validate correct inputs.

There might still besome selective users having connection issues or timeouts and if you are one those few, please post a comment and let us know what browser you are using and any antivirus program you are using. Many antivirus programs today are filtering all web browser content and are notorious for being buggy in this feature. Make sure to test our site with your antivirus program’s “link scanner” or “web protection/filter” disabled.

Oh, so the captcha thing wasn’t just me! Good, I eventually had to get my gmail to sign it in because it refused to go through. I often miss it the first time (I’m lame like that), but after four times with it being “wrong” I was starting to get confused, especially since they get gradually easier as you miss them.

Had a small problem just now with the sidelinks that looks like this: [ ] It went away when you clicked another link, but it happened a few times. My browser is Chrome and I’m using Shaw Secure.

I don’t know whether anyone ever ask for this but is it feasable for registered user to have the ability to edit reviews that he/she gave? Sometimes I typed in my reviews without double checking it and there’re some misspelled or missing words. Once I accidentially gave a one word review. It would be nice to be able to correct those mistakes.

I definitely second this; it would be a great feature to have.

“Sometimes I typed in my reviews without double checking it and there’re some misspelled or missing words.”

Been there, done that. 🙂 I’d like to see this feature, too. To avoid user abuse, a time limit would be fine. I know some message boards limit editing to a specific time frame (usually anywhere from 24 hours to 1 week).

I’ll second that. That’d be very useful.

I’d prefer twenty-four hours simply because a week is enough to abuse the system. I’ve left a few reviews with garbled sentences that when I read over a couple times before posting read just fine.

Site’s being sloooow and won’t finish loading a page for minutes at a time. I use Chrome and my antivirus is AVG 2012.

Disable avg 2012 and try again.

I have Chrome and AVG, and I’m not disabling that. It’s slow at times, but it don’t take me minutes to load a page.

I am trying to post a reply on a forum and I’m getting an error message: “This webpage is not available
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.”

I use Google Chrome version 20.0.1132.57 and I use Norton 360.

07/24/2012 at 12:09 pm is slow and it’s not the antivirus system fault because everyone is different. Fanfiction is slow and I’m not the only one. I use Firefox and I’m not disabling my antivirus which is Norton 360. I have gotten virus on before and I don’t want one again.

Can’t you please fix this because week ago everything was working fine, even my problem I had earlier was fix but now it is back and the page don’t even want to load right. I can get them to load all the way but I either closed browser which works a few times or keep on refreshing the page (more than 5 times!) until it finally appears and connects all the way.

Site doesn’t load. Can’t be the browser (Firefox) or the antivirus (Norton Internet Security) because last week, for one day, I had no problems, even logged on, with the same browser and antivirus.

I find that I have a 50-50 shot when I upload a new chapter that an alert will actually go out to my readers. I submitted a chapter this morning and everyone got the alert. I submitted one this afternoon and no one has received it. I tried deleting the chapter and resubmitting but still no notification. I use Internet Explorer and Firefox, and have had this issue on both of them. Please fix this problem.

We do not send out duplicate alerts if you keep deleting chapter and resubmitting it.

I use Google Chrome and it won’t load the forum replies because it times out. The pages load slowly and it’s annoying because I have things planned on my forum that I want to finish before school starts again.

Not sure if this has been addressed but the new search options in communities don’t work. Sorting according to follows, favorites, and reviews all give the same order. tried it out everyday since the option was put in and it hasn’t been fixed. Archive and update sorting still work.

Hey, I have never had a problem with fanfiction. But in the last two weeks I have had a hard time getting the pages to load, and now that you have made the new screen updates I cant get anything to load. No storys, sometimes the first half of a user page and main page. I have been on fanfiction for over five years…

Can you try it now to see if you are still getting connection errors? Do you have DSL or Cable Modem?

I think I ran into the capcha problem. I can’t access my account at all. Either on my windows phone or my laptop. Windows 7 on both. Native browser on the dang phone. Firefox on the laptop. Avg is the antivirus. I have tried resetting my password twice.

Help! I can’t connect to reliably with IE 9, Google Chrome, or Firefox on my new computer. I run Windows 7, completely updated and all that jazz.

I get emails about new chapters and stories, but I can’t get on the site to read them. I can’t get to the site to send an email about the problems I’m having, nor to find assistance.

I’m close to trashing and moving to archive of our own.

What is the error message that you are getting? That will help others determine the problem. Also, check your firewall/antivirus settings while you are at it.

There’s part of my frustration – I don’t get an error message. It just sits trying to load and eventually times out.

Google Chrome did give me a message about checking my firewall/antivirus settings and I went over the Windows firewall but that helped until I restarted my computer. I can’t find where to check the MacAfee settings or what to change.

I know enough to get myself in trouble. 😉

That’s frustrating. When I had MacAfee, I didn’t like how the settings for it was hidden far more deeper than I would like. I would say google how to change MacAfee settings.

Tried googling how to change McAfee settings today, no joy.

I’m spending too much time to accept to access one site. I’m asking myself if it’s worth it…

Am I the only one who thinks that they should allow you to post your own stories? Like a section where you can post your books for others to read 🙂 That would be kind of perfect for me.
