I really appreciate all the work you’ve done for the site, though I’ve noticed that the horizontal lines that most authors use as scene breaks are barely visible. It’s really hard to tell when a scene has changed when I can’t even see the line anymore. Is this going to be fixed?

It’s great to see all the new upgrades to the site but please stop ignoring abuse reports and emails about stories that contain sexual explicit scenes.

I have a question regarding song lyrics in stories. Is it permissable for incomplete lyrics to feature in a work of fan fiction? For example, if Character A was singing a song and Character B was listening, would it be ok to write parts of the song being sung with commaentry from the point of view of the listener/s? I would like to know.

How putting lyrics in your profile? I have a story that was inspired by songs. The lyrics do not need to be part of the narrative, but knowing what they are can enhance a reader’s understanding of how/why each particular chapter came to take the direction that it does. I had originally planned to put those lyrics into author’s notes at the top of each chapter, but I think this would violate the TOS. Is there any reason that I can’t direct readers to my profile and list the lyrics there?

To clarify, I am not talking about whole songs here. Just a stanza or a verse at most.

I’m sorry for the spam, but I have some questions…? Is there ANY WAY you can stop SOPA from banning FanFiction? So many people replace names of already published books and MST, I’m seriously scared that SOPA would tear down the site. And there is a part in the guidelines I’m confused about. You said “no second person/you based.” Does that mean no how-to books? I know many authors use second person to get people more involved or interested with the story, and I’m wondering if that’s breaking the rules. Again sorry for the spam…

I was surprised that didn’t do a blackout day when the other big sites did. I think the only thing we all can do is pay attention to when they try pushing through stuff again and sign the needed petitions.

As for your question, I think the answer is going to be a no as that also would fall under interactive fanfic which is not allowed.

I thought that the reason why the site banned second person fanfic was to do with choose-your-own-adventure fanfics and reader-input fanfics, where the reviews dictated where the story went, or like the “stories” you can find on Quizilla. I can see why these aren’t considered proper stories.

But a story that is simply written in second person can be a legitimate story that uses that literary device. Eg. “He says his final words, you hear, and you know you’re doomed; while you look down at the gyves upon your pockmarked wrists and feel the heavy weight of the thick prisoner’s cap on your hair…”

Even the stories that use the literary device correctly are problematic. Parents don’t want their kids reading stories where “you have something bad happen to you” because they’re afraid of their kids having nightmares.

I’ve never seen parental complains around that literary device specifically. Parental complaints are usually focused around sexual content and violence – that literary device neither encourages nor discourages sexual content and violence. And the “M” rating is allowed on the site for stories where “something bad” happens as long as the something bad is not graphic to an NC-17 level.

First, while M rated content is allowed there are people who do post MA content. Second, it isn’t about whether the literary device allows or encourages sexual content or violence. It is about the fact the literary device allows for the reader to self-insert themselves into the story line. Do we really want kids imagining that M rated stuff is happening to them? How about the T rated romances where “you” are paired off with one of the canon characters? A thirteen year old should be allowed to read stuff that is T rated, right? But should they be reading stuff that allows them to self-insert themselves mentally into a relationship with an adult? On top of this, the site also has the rule, “non-historical, non-fictional characters” are not allowed. This includes direct self-inserts of our selves which should not be mistaken as being the same as an author avatar.

Most people who can read understand that the ‘you’ in second person stories is not them. It is a device to illustrate a fictional character point of view. A thirteen-year-old is entitled to read T-rated stories where a character who is not like them may be in love with another character not like them. There are plenty of people who insert themselves in the storyline already – but FF.Net is not going to ban Mary-Sues since that would be impractical and cause hurt feelings. If kids click on M stuff (which they should not be doing anyway) it is not the site’s responsibility when the rating is there to discourage them. Second person stories are not a common format in any case, and often the ‘you’ is not meant to be the reader but a canon character. “You look in the mirror and trace the lightning bolt scar on your forehead, wishing you were anyone but Harry Potter.”

A little bit off topic about second person stries. The NC17 rated stories are a problem on the site whether they are second person or not. I caught my 13 yr old reading a series of stories that should have been rated NC17 with extremely explicit sexual content. The writer even has it posted to other sites as explicit. The stories were reported but my reports were totally ignored. I have no problems if writers do want to wrote explicit stories- as long as they post them to sites that allow them and not pretend they are rated M just to post them here because they think they will get more readers.

PS Sorry just wanted to add my 13 yr old did get into trouble for reading the M rated stories. She has lost total computer privileges but I was shocked at just how explicit these stories were- they left nothing to the imagination.

As one Guest to another :), I sympathize with your feelings toward MA/NC-17 stories. I’ve noticed many authors post explicit content under the T rating, sometimes going so far as to dare readers to report them. Other times, I’ve become engrossed in a good story and it suddenly veers off with graphic sex and violence.

I simply ignore them and stop reading, but I can see how much of a concern it is for parents. Other than reporting them, there’s not much we can do. I do recommend when you submit an abuse report to copy and paste part of the offending content into the box. For example:

The author’s note states: (copied text)

This is a paragraph from chapter two: (copied text)

I can’t even begin to imagine how many reports the site admins get each day. Being as specific as possible seems to yield better results from others I have chatted with.

I have already posted abuse reports and even emailed the support staff several times with cut and pasted explicit scenes from the stories, plus links of the writer’s profile and the stories ect but nothing has been done at all. It’s so frustrating- especially when the mods have even posted to the front page explicit stories are not allowed yet ignore reports about them.

I agree it’s frustrating, especially when you’ve been so thorough in documenting the abuse. Wish I had a better answer, but sadly there’s not much we as users can do. Maybe posting here will catch the right person’s attention.

I would have to agree with the frustrating part. I have been reporting One Direction fanfiction whenever the author starts to argue back with me. There is a lot of authors on the site that have no understanding that they could have their stories reported and deleted.

When I’ve encountered “you” fanfics I’ve rarely if ever encountered them where the “you” is a canon character. I’m not saying they don’t exist, but most of what I’ve seen has been where the “you” is the reader and has served the purpose of allowing the reader to self-insert themselves.

Now, I don’t have a problem with self inserts and wish fulfillment as all writing including that of published writers contain some level of self insertion and wish fulfillment. However, on the flip side I have seen the damages self insertion and wish fulfillment can do if it isn’t kept in check and boundaries aren’t made.

I would like you guys to know that there is a ton of fanfiction about the band One Direction. Could you post a reminder on the front page that real person fanfiction are not allowed on Fanfiction.

On top of this the site may want to clarify what constitutes a historical character to the site admins and what doesn’t.

~ How long ago does an event have to occur in order for it to be considered historical?
~ How long does a person need to be dead to be considered a historical character and do they need to be dead at all?
~ How big of an achievement do these characters have to make in history in order for them to constitute a historical character.

For example, while Michael Jackson is a musician he played a major role in the history of music and thus has constituted a historical character even before he died. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and other older writers of literary classics are also now considered historical characters for the history of literature. On the flip side, I’ve seen some people argue that someone else was a historical character for something he did so long ago. The person is still alive, the achievement was small and while the person has made his mark on history, he hasn’t necessarily made a historical contribution. I can also see some of the younger members saying that the newest actor of the latest block buster that broke box office is thus a historical character too.

I was checking a previously published chapter of mine and I realized that some letters completly disapeared. The often used french phrase ‘Il y a’ was deleted, leavig only an ‘i’. Moreover, other common phrases such as ‘ De A à Z’ aren’t published. This chapter was published a few years ago and it was complete. I don’t understand why those phrases and letters have disapeared. Please help! We are many authors who publish in french and it would be terrible if such common phrases don’t appear anymore when we publish. Thank you!

I absolutely love that you guys have enabled this because I have no computer, only my IPod. However, every time I attempt to post something on a story or forum thats longer than a paragraph it smashes it together. It’s difficult and a little irritating to try to read. Is there something I can do about this?
