Tweaks Aplenty

06 Aug

Following are updates to the desktop/regular site.

  1. New check-and-remove option added for Alerts and Favorites management to allow faster and multiple removals per action.
  2. Arial is now the default font replacing Verdana for a tighter layout and improved readability across all platforms. Users can change their story reading mode to ‘Verdana’ mode via the text style toggles.
  3. Story links now respect the :visited css property to alert users which stories they have already visited.
  4. Increased font size for those with high-resolution monitors (1400 pixel width and higher). Ultra high-resolution screens have very small pixel size translating to smaller texts and this change should improve readability for these users.
  5. Slightly darker blue colors for all links to reduce eye-strain for those that stay on the site for hours at a time.
  6. Darker horizontal rules (separators).
  7. Cleaner look for the story content/chapters management page.

  1. Image manager pop-up selection out of alignment on some browsers.
  2. Fixed Alerts and Favorites management for those with monster 10K+ plus entries.

  • Sorting within Alerts/Favorites management will return in a different form in the next scheduled update.

Thanks for the link color change; but, as mentioned, there are other places that need that back; for example, list of cross-over categories. In the case of HP, the list is long, and hard to navigate to the cross-over you’re reading.

As a nit, other sites preserve the color change, but let you override with your own color–I’ve always set mine to bright red, with dark blue as the not visited color. Oh, and no default underlining of links. Know this can be done; have done it on a site that I maintain.

Another nit: the previous/chapter list/next pointer at the bottom of a chapter. It needs to be centered over the comments box. It does line up with the same object at the top of the chapter, but that object is offset by the settings object on the left. The one at the bottom is by itself, and really throws the symmetry, to my eyes.

I have to comment on the font changes. It’s actually too big now, and difficult to read. I tended to decrease the font size half the time anyway. Now I can’t even change the font size/type or anything while using firefox. Can there be an option to set a default size/style preference, or at least fix the buttons to change what one is being used?

Some people are just never happy!

Thank you for working so hard! The changed color on story links is exceptionally helpful!

the changes right now are terrible. I have 9 pages of favorites and have to go to each page to find out if a story has updated. Is there any way to fix that? The stories updating on one page was so much better and more convenient.

Personally, I’d love the option to select a smaller-than-the-new-default font size, using the font size-control buttons. Seriously, I like being able to read as much as possible with a minimum of scrolling– having small fonts is a *positive feature* for me.

    Who else agrees?

To be honest, at the moment I find it easier to read this blog than *anything* on ffnet itself – be it stories, PM’s, forum, the story pages…

Only thing i don’t like that got changed was you can’t move your alter stores any more, i have to scroll threw all of them now to see what ones have been updated, I’ve got like 6pages, and i’m sure there are other people that have more

Can you *please* reset the text. The text has become so fine now that my forum is spaced waaaaay out. On the main page the section to the right that shows who last posted is now all the way *off* the screen. And trying to change the page view does *nothing* to help or fix it. And when we receive story/chapter alerts now, the text is so tiny and fine it hurts the eyes, and the area to click is now so much smaller and inconvenient. Can you in the support team *please* put the text back to how it was. You know the old adage, “if it aint broke don’t fix it?” Well, the text really truly was just fine, and in fact perfect for the site as it was. Please fix/put it back so that our forums aren’t spaced all the way off the screen anymore, and links aren’t so small you need glasses to read them. Thank you.

i dont like this new change with the favorites list. its too disorganized since when you press the update option it only does that for the page not all the favorites and its hard for people who have lots of favorite fanfiction. please make the fav list one page again. and thanks for the close up in the cover page

Due to the changes made you are no longer able to sort your story alerts page. Is there any chance this feature will be restored?

  10. Nicole

    08/06/2012 at 8:59 pm

Ok so when I get on Fanfiction I immediately go to my story alerts to see if new updates have been posted that day. It’s the very first thing I think about when I come to this site. Now when I go to my story alerts I can’t click the update button so that all my stories that have been updated are on the top of the list. This is very inconvenient not to mention how the Hell am I suppose to find when my stories are updated when I can’t be alerted to that fact? You know the whole point of having story alerts is to know when the new chapters are out! Also now I have to go to each page of which I have 6 and look for the updated chapters on each page.
Now I didn’t care about getting rid of MA rated stories because I can always go to adult fiction for that and I didn’t care about the reviews being changed and I didn’t care about sprucing up Fanfiction but when you messed with my UPDATE BUTTON you have officially gone off the deep end! I want it fixed or you make a better version but bring my story alert update button back! That’s all I have to say and no I’m not sorry for being rude because you people keep screwing with my happiness. That’s right my HAPPINESS!

The complaints about the update button feel more like complaints that a change now feels unnatural and has to be gotten used to rather then something that actually is problematic. I don’t know if anyone else remembers, but the buttons four our “account”, “stories” and such used to be at the top. How many people didn’t like it when the site admins decided to move them from the top to the far right? How many have gotten used to it since then.

Thanks for bringing back the color change for links visited! And I like the new font, it looks great. I just have a couple issues with how the Story Alerts have been altered. You know how there used to be little arrow thingies in the boxes at the top, you know, where it categorizes things starting with Story, then Author, then Category, etc? Well, I’d like those back, I like to click on the arrow things in the Updated box b/c it would change the order of the stories being presented by when they’ve been updated. Can you bring that back please? Now I have to scroll through all of my 100+ alerts to find out which ones have been updated! TT_TT

Well, at least the mobile site still works on the fav stories/authors front. But can we have the regular version back? I wouldn’t mind being able to delete more stories at once, but can’t you just up the number instead of changing it like this?

  14. Angelz

    08/06/2012 at 9:58 pm

You have adults that read on your site and I’m sorry but I’m not interested in reading from K to T

I want mature content as I’m an adult who still likes cartoons and such

Please just make stronger filters so that “kids” won’t read Mature content

    • yemi hikari

      08/07/2012 at 12:34 am

So… you’re an adult who likes cartoons, some of which have ratings K to T, but you’re not interested in reading K to T rated fanfics. Also, you’re complaining that there is no mature content despite the fact the site does allow M rated material. If you’re asking for MA material to be allowed on the site, kids can always lie about their age and it is illegal to provide a minor with MA material.

The sort function on story alerts not longer works. Meaning I can’t easily figure out what I need to catch up on. Defeats the entire purpose of story alerts.

Thanks I love everything so far, except when I go in to favorite story, author and such. It has different pages. I liked them better on one page. It would be fine with the seperate pages. If for example they were seperated into catagories, one piece, naruto for 1 page. I have a lot of stories like somewhere around 700 faved. Please at least consider putting it back to the way it was, or have the pages in alpabetical order by story. Or is there a way to tweek it to the way we want our page to apear. Thanks!

Favorite stories can no longer me sorted as a whole group. They are mow broken into pages an only each page can be sorted. This renders the sort function useless. Is this a bug ?

    08/06/2012 at 10:56 pm

Really, I don’t have any problem with these changes except one:
The Story/Favorites Alerts pages. It’s kinda frustrating to go through them up and down to see which ones were updated and waiting on my (slow) email to tell me isn’t an option. I have to use Ctrl+F and type in the current date for all 7 pages to find the updated ones.
Other than that, it’s all fine.

Only issue I have with the latest update is the favorites page change. It doesn’t make things easier, it makes things a lot harder. I have to search though every page now instead of just having them all right there on one page. I wouldn’t really care all that much if I only had a few pages, but fanfiction is the major site I go to so I spend most of my day reading and have accumulated over 1,000 different favorite stories that I like since I first started. I have 30 pages I have to go though and it gets very annoying after the first 5 pages. This is a case of breaking something that didn’t need fixing. Please change it back or make it were all the newly updated stories go to the first page. It’d make things much less complicated and it would give me less of a headache to deal with.

    08/06/2012 at 11:39 pm

I have to say… I’m a little disappointed at some of the changes. The font, in my personal opinion, is just too large and it’s somewhat irritating having to switch back to Verdana whenever I want to read something.

Also, I have a huge Favorite Story list (well over 700 stories), and before the change, I absolutely loved how we could sort the favorites via category, author, story, and update, and now we can’t even do that (besides the update part) and it’s very upsetting having to sweep through my favorites just to find the story I want. The way the site originally was, was perfect. Honestly, the way I see it… if it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it…

What could’ve been worked on is the fact that we can’t send links via PM, which was frustrating, but manageable… Now that the entire sight has changed, I’m not too happy. Although, I will say, I do enjoy the book cover images that was added. But, I just feel that the site is becoming a little to… overcrowded with add-on’s and it’s disappointing. I’ve been with since ’03 and I do not want to leave…

As many others have asked and for the sake of your loyal users, please change it back!!

I must say i myself am not a fan of the new font. I was reading and clicked the next link only for the font to get huge in comparison to what i had (i kept the font size relitively small previously). Please listen to the huge number of people wanting the Veranda back (or implement a siteside setting for font).

I also wanted to mention that i love having the links back! and that the darker links are appriciated 🙂

On the favorite list resort options and all that jazz: the pages may be a nice addition but only when/if you fix the sort feature; if you don’t do that then the pages are next to useless and just plain frustrating.

i read in another comment somethign about you removing MA fics. In some ways i understand this: kiddies shouldn’t be reading that kind of fic. On the other hand adults are very much present on this site and should have the ablity to rea that type of material if they so wish. So why not make a stronger filter (yes AdultFF is a fine site however i find the presentation and organization on FF much easier to deal with)? Or make it to where if you are below a certain age you can not read that material. Even having a Warning! like Livejournal i believe does about mature content would solve the problem i feel. I don’t know about legalities i guess but i don’t think anyone can say anything if the kiddie chooses to continue reading even with a 18+ warning.. I just feel like it would make your job as FF easier as you would not have to continue screening out mature stories and the readers themselfves would not have to leave the site (loosing you business) to read more mature stories.

Is anyone with me on this?

    • The Crystal Rose

      08/07/2012 at 12:18 am

Fabulous idea, Filly8! I agree, don’t get rid of the MA content, just simply change the site to where you have to verify you are of a certain age to be able to read such content. I will say, most of the user’s (at least, most of the authors that I speak with) are adults, and such, we like to read that content. And personally, as an adult, I don’t want to read kiddy stories. I’m not a kid.

I agree, though. Kids shouldn’t read such things, but I feel that instead of getting rid of the rating or the content (which will inevitably make you lose quite a bit of your members, more than likely) just add a verification of age. It will solve everyone’s problem, make all the user’s happy, and be easier on everyone.

As an adult member on the site, please, please, do not make the rest of us suffer…

Thank you for restoring the visited links color. However, there’s still one thing wrong. Right now, it only shows up for the story links themselves, not for all links on the site. It really needs to be set for all links. While I now know what stories I’ve read, I don’t know if I’ve read the latest chapter for them or if I’ve visited a profile.

Also, I have to support those who want the font changed. While I have it on Verdana for stories, the size is too big and I can’t shrink it. And this doesn’t help with the rest of the site where I can’t change the font to Verdana. The Arial font does hurt my eyes just a bit.

    Thank you very much!

  23. quark

    08/07/2012 at 12:48 am

I’m sure someone worked really hard on this and I appreciate the effort, but the “multiple pages for favorite stories and authors” thing is a horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE idea. The difference in loading time is nonexistent, the sort option doesn’t work across all pages, and the types of sort that you’ve left us are just about useless. What used to be one convenient total page is now chunked up into a dozen or more tiny pages for no apparent reason other than to frustrate your users and require twenty mouseclicks where just one was previously required.

Please, please reconsider this implementation. It doesn’t save time, it doesn’t increase organization, and it doesn’t work.

(I also much prefer Verdana to Arial while I’m complaining, but considering I can use browser add-ons to get that font back that complaint falls pretty low on my list. I will say these changes are teaching me all sorts of things about CSS, though.)

  24. NeenaJ

I have to agree with Nessa; “Thank you for restoring the visited links color. However, there’s still one thing wrong. Right now, it only shows up for the story links themselves, not for all links on the site. It really needs to be set for all links. While I now know what stories I’ve read, I don’t know if I’ve read the latest chapter for them or if I’ve visited a profile.”

These so called “little” changes just to make the site look better are also making the site less user friendly and really unpleasant to navigate.

Seriously don’t get why everyone’s complaining. Just be glad Xing’s putting in so much effort! He’s trying to please millions (?) of people here!
If everyone’s opinions are THAT different, just ask him to put default fonts for the entire site in settings or something!

I’ve read some other comments and I definitely agree with the ones saying that you should stop trying to make the site look prettier because you are making it a lot less user friendly. The toggle button isn’t making the font go back to how it was, it all looks WRONG. The new font hurts my eyes, PLEASE go back to the old one!!!

The :visited property is grate improvement. Yet It would be even greater if a story had a “mark as read” button + a filter option on it on the stories page.

I find myself spending lot’s of time on searching stories I didn’t read yet.

    • Filly8

      08/08/2012 at 1:49 am

I must say that a mark as read buttom would be a fantastic idea! I also spend a semit unreasonable amount of time scrolling past stories that i have already read (or statring a story only to realize in first chapter that i have read it before). Not really a urget improvment to be made but definitaly one ot keep in mind 🙂

I am not sure if I am in the right place, but I wanted to give some feedback for the new format of the Favorite Stories page. It is much less efficient than the previous format. For myself, I always sort by story category. It is the only way I can ever find anything considering all my favorites. Breaking the favorites into pages and taking away that option means that we now have to scroll, guess and search to find a story we want to reread. For my own opinion, I much preferred the one page with the options to sort by title, author, category, and associated dates.
To leave a well-rounded reply, I love the new format for reading stories, with the summary at the top. That is immensely useful.
    Thank you for your time.

A ‘mark as read’ button might be cool, but my usual method of tracking things I’ve read is simply the obvious check of whether or not the story link shows up in a different color indicating it’s in my history. However, some time in the past couple of days, there was a tweak changing favorites lists so that none of the links show up as underlined. For some reason, these non-underlined links no longer change colors to indicate history. It’s obviously not a universal change, because when I’m on the author’s “my stories” tab, links behave as expected, and show that I have visited the story. Since my method of finding new stories is to look through the favorites of authors I like, this is kind of a problem for me. Could this get changed back?

Um, links that I’ve visited aren’t showing up purple anymore. And I’m 99.9 % sure that it’s not my computer at fault here. And a couple days ago, they WERE showing up purple. Did you guys get rid of it? Again?

Alguém poderia me ajudar?
