Tweaks Aplenty

06 Aug

Following are updates to the desktop/regular site.

  1. New check-and-remove option added for Alerts and Favorites management to allow faster and multiple removals per action.
  2. Arial is now the default font replacing Verdana for a tighter layout and improved readability across all platforms. Users can change their story reading mode to ‘Verdana’ mode via the text style toggles.
  3. Story links now respect the :visited css property to alert users which stories they have already visited.
  4. Increased font size for those with high-resolution monitors (1400 pixel width and higher). Ultra high-resolution screens have very small pixel size translating to smaller texts and this change should improve readability for these users.
  5. Slightly darker blue colors for all links to reduce eye-strain for those that stay on the site for hours at a time.
  6. Darker horizontal rules (separators).
  7. Cleaner look for the story content/chapters management page.

  1. Image manager pop-up selection out of alignment on some browsers.
  2. Fixed Alerts and Favorites management for those with monster 10K+ plus entries.

  • Sorting within Alerts/Favorites management will return in a different form in the next scheduled update.

I can’t organize my story alerts using the columns anymore (Title, author, updated date, etc.) Please fix this. Thanks.

I can tell you why it’s not ordering properly. It’s sorting by the fifty that are displayed, not by all of them. Initially it’s sorted by Add Date. Then, you get the fifty fics you most recently added first, then the next, ect. These sets of fifty are the ones that are then sorted. Meaning if you added a fic, then fifty others, you would have to sort page two to see if there were any updates there as well.

One possible solution is to change the default sort to Update Date. Or returning it all to one long column. Either is a possibility.

Here’s a quote from Xing, “Sorting within Alerts/Favorites management will return in a different form in the next scheduled update.”

It’s getting changed in the next update. Live with it for a few days. It’s not going to kill you to not be able to sort your alerts and favorites the way you like. So stop complaining. That means everyone, not just you.

The ‘Favorite Stories’ page is all screwed up, I can’t find anything. It’s all out of order and jumbeld, it used to be easier to look up my favorite stories and to see the ones that updated.

    • Zaralann (@Zaralann)

      08/06/2012 at 1:20 pm

I agree, I have 1618 Favorite Stories = 30 pages = Too much time to check them ALL for updates of some old stories. I’m sorry to say this but you’ve killed the ‘Favorite Stories’ list, now it’s useless. I hope you’ll see that it was a mistake and return it to what it was before.

    • Lord Jace

      08/06/2012 at 4:56 pm

Agreed. My favorite stories list was how I kept track of when my fics updated, as I didn’t want to have to deal with an overflowing email.

I likes to sort my watchlist by updates but right now I can’t. I lost the sorting function in my watchlist (that up/down arrow by every columns). If it was removed intentionally I would like that function back. Please.

    • NJB

      08/06/2012 at 11:52 am

I completely agree. I can only keep up with the stories on my watch list by sorting them by how recently theyve been updated. And without this function its pretty headache inducing. Need the function back that lets me sort stories on my watch list by update date!

Regarding change number two, I much prefer Verdana as the default font. When I loaded up FFN this morning, the font was so tiny I had to strain to read it. I need to use my browser’s zoom feature to read comfortably. Is anyone else experiencing this?

    • Mystic Defiance

      08/06/2012 at 11:43 am

I’m experiencing this as well. FFN, please introduce a sitewide text changer.

      • cindella204

        08/06/2012 at 11:54 am

Agreed. It could be my screen settings, but Arial is much harder to read. I’d like to use Verdana for everything, I know I can use it in stories, but what about everything else?

    • myrddinlefay

      08/06/2012 at 11:47 am

The font will stay on the one you want after you change it so it doesn’t matter. Some people will like a different font, though I even use Veranda as my Word default lol! As long as you don’t have to keep changing it every time you open a story who cares? Anyway, if its too small you can always make it bigger.

      • Mystic Defiance

        08/06/2012 at 11:49 am

I use the forums a lot, which is why I want a sitewide text changer.

      • Guest

        08/06/2012 at 11:53 am

@myrddinlefay – I realize we can change the font while reading a story, but I’m referring to the site as a whole: the main page, the listings under each genre category, and the listings of stories in a fandom. The fonts look so tiny on my monitor. The only way to enlarge them is with my browser’s zoom.

    08/06/2012 at 11:45 am

Sorry, like the new changes, just I don’t seem to be able to sort out my story alerts based on when they were updated. Is this intentional, or just a mistake? I also appear to have lost some of my favorited stories after this new update. Please help.

  13. Gruntled

    08/06/2012 at 11:46 am

Wow… paranoid much? What happened to the choice of being anonymous? Issues of email requirements to post a reply aside. I’ve noticed that you’re tweaks seems to have disabled the option to organize one’s story alerts by choice filters. And yes I checked to see if it was out of date software, or my adblocker… it wasn’t. Though I do only have, and use Firefox, and I seem to recall someone’s grumping about Firefox being temperamental recently with your updates.

  14. InTheMix

    08/06/2012 at 11:49 am

I can’t sort my alerts and favorites to show me all the most recent UPdates! Please change it back so I can at least sort it that way for alerts and so that I don’t have to go page by page on the favorites page. I mean I have hundreds of stories in my alerts and THOUSANDS in my favorites that I check multiple times a day! It’s very annoying and time consuming when before I could literally check up on everything in seconds!
All the changes lately are starting to really get annoying especially when they aren’t needed.

  15. amshin

    08/06/2012 at 11:50 am

As someone above written – the sorting doesn’t work in the favorites list. The list have been broken up into separate pages but the fics are assigned to them randomly it seems so you have to check and sort them one by one to check for updates for example…

  16. Chyrstis

    08/06/2012 at 11:50 am

Have you guys starting looking into the disappearing horizontal rules yet? I never had a problem with them last month, but now some will work while others will not. It just randomly varies from chapter to chapter.

    • dmn410

      08/06/2012 at 12:27 pm

I agree. Thanks for changing the color back on stories, but you need to do the author’s name as well and the last chapter mark, too. This keeps you from revisiting if you have already read the most recent chapter.

      • BlueJean452

        08/06/2012 at 4:09 pm

I agree with this! I am happy the color change is back on the stories but I would also really like it back on the author’s name and last chapter mark. It helps me remember what I have read and which authors I like when they post a new story.

      • Kay

        08/06/2012 at 6:00 pm

Totally agree with this. It is nice to not only be able to see what stories you have read but if you have read the last chapter or not…. otherwise enjoying the updates, but please make the last chapter mark change color with the story title so it is easier to keep track of what has been read!!!!

  20. laoraa

    08/06/2012 at 11:53 am

I’m really loving all of these changes…except the Arial one :/ Like a lot of people have said, I really prefer Verdana – it’s easier to read, at least for me, and with Verdana the text looks less bunched together D:

Maybe, like some have suggested, put up an option for the whole site like you have for stories? Maybe under “Settings” on the login menu…

  21. Cindy

    08/06/2012 at 11:54 am

Can you change the alerts/favorites back to having the sorting thing? Its much easier to manage with that. I can hardly see the font also. I can’t see anything, and its not like I can change it when I’m trying to look for a story. I can’t read the summaries.

  22. redstickbonbon

    08/06/2012 at 11:54 am

Thanks for Change #3-this makes it much easier to use your site, and avoids repeat visits to links already visited. It seems though, that with the recent changes, that the ability to sort ‘Story Alerts’ (and perhaps others, I’m not sure) by the different column headings has been lost. I sort by Update Date to do a quick check of recently updated stories, but that feature is now gone.

  23. gryffinsdoor

    08/06/2012 at 11:54 am

“New check-and-remove option added for Alerts and Favorites management to allow faster and multiple removals per action.”
That’s nice, but the column sorting feature is now broken. Please fix.

  24. TwiceMarked

    08/06/2012 at 11:55 am

Okay, now I am not only unable to sort my alerts watch list by updates, it seems as if I am unable to add some stories to my favourite list. I’ve just added the same story to my list seven times, each time it says that the request has been processed, each time I check my list, however, it is not there. Is this just because the site has been recently updated? Or is it going to continue as a problem? Hope not. Thanks for listening.

As far as forum things that need to be fixed too, I’ve noticed – is there any way you could fix the quoting? When you’re in the post reply boxes, it won’t quote unless you go back and edit your post. It also highlights the lines below it instead of the single line too – I also noticed this in doc manager.

Is it possible to give registered members the ability to switch layouts via settings in the login area? FFN could include a ‘classic’ scheme with old icons for forums etc with a toggle in account settings.

  27. cindella204

    08/06/2012 at 11:59 am

Oh my gosh, I just posted a new chapter to my story and that simple process gave me a huge headache because of the font change. I never use Arial on my computer, wiyh my screen it’s just really hard to read. Must be the resolution of my MacBook Pro, because on other computers it’s fine.

Please allow me to make the whole site in Verdana if I want. If not it’s seriously going to affect my usage of the site, because it is physically uncomfortable for me to read the Arial, and I have great vision.

  28. Mariliis Rebase

    08/06/2012 at 12:02 pm

So after the update I can’t find some stories. They are just lost although they still exist on ff. Why is that? And will I NEVER get these back now? Also, can’t look at alerts list by updates. I hope this gets fixed soon 🙂 Thank you.

Not so thrilled with the font – but I’ll get used to it.

Thank you for changing the story links back – is there any way to change the arrow back as well (especially because sometimes authors update multiple times a day so I know I read the first chapter but I have no idea where I am).

It looks like the font size just grew. 🙂 Verdana is still easier on my eyes than Arial, but I no longer need to zoom in to read it comfortably. Thank you, Xing, for the swift response!

  33. Mystic Defiance

    08/06/2012 at 12:10 pm

Let us size down the font. Yes, I know that you upsized the regular, but for people who figured out how to swithc to Verdana on stories, it’s just not fun to be repeatedly clicking the downsize button and having it. Not. WORK.

    • Bivi

      08/06/2012 at 1:29 pm

I feel the same way! The larger font is throwing me off big time and it’s very frustrating that I can’t downsize it.

  34. Kerry Mayne-Matias

    08/06/2012 at 12:11 pm

Seriously sucky to have to go page by page to be able to sort what has updated for that page. Its not an improvement to have to sort through 10+ pages to find up what has updated in my story favorites.

  35. Chikitani

    08/06/2012 at 12:21 pm

FFN. In the Favorite Stories section, the default sort is to sort by date added to favorites. Ok. But when trying to sort by update date, instead of sorting all favorite’d stories, it only sorts those on that current page – making it impossible to find all the stories that have been updated. Please fix.

  36. Guest

    08/06/2012 at 12:22 pm

The changing font confused the hell out of me for a while. Its was Verdana one second then I clicked on a link and everything seemed different. It’s nice to know it wasn’t a glitch and actually something planned, but I like the Verdana font better. Why not have an option for members that can change the font in the account settings area?

  38. Sin and Virtue

    08/06/2012 at 12:25 pm

I can’t put my updates in order by date anymore. PLEASE change it back!!!! I REALLY don’t want to go through all my tracked stories, page by page since you changed that too, to make sure no one has updated!! All these changes are ridiculous!

I’m honestly so upset that Arial replaced Verdana. I liked the font size and font type how they were before all these changes were being made. And now the font size is enormous.
Change it back, seriously, everyone liked Verdana so much better. Come on.

I have to agree with my fellow members. I liked it when we could sort stories in all those different ways. It was much easier to find those stories when it was in alphabetical order by default. This reminds me of when they stopped doing that with the fandom lists.

I will say that I’m glad that the story links were changed back, but I do think that needs to be done for the other links too, like fandom links and profile links too.

  43. serenity3rage

    08/06/2012 at 12:52 pm

O like most of the changes, but now I can’t sort my story alerts by update, so it’s harder for me to keep track of the stories that have been updated. Please bring it back.

  46. moodyspark

    08/06/2012 at 1:05 pm

any chance of having a font size reducer thing, the font is sort of straining my eyes and for people with Dyslexia it’s sort of a pain, no offence but love the other changes though!

  47. JJ

    08/06/2012 at 1:12 pm

Great! You brought back the color change for visited links! Thanks for that!

…But you forgot to activate it also for the “»” symbol, which is what actually let you know if you had read the last update.

The “»” is THE useful feature, not the name of the Story per se.

  48. Unyielding Wish

    08/06/2012 at 1:24 pm

Seriously, what’s up with the font change? I LOVED IT SO MUCH BEFORE. Change everything back to Verdana or whatever.

You know, if you’re going to do updates, can you at least check with us users? If it’s unpopular and gets voted down, then don’t change it. Come on, people. I also think that you purposefully made the font bigger…

Just…please, do a poll when you’re about to change. Give people 5 days or so to vote on the poll.

    • konarciq

      08/06/2012 at 5:13 pm

Having a poll before changing things – good idea! I’m sure it will have its drawbacks, but I guess it’d save admin an awful lot of not-appreciated work as well…

    • XxCammmm

      08/07/2012 at 1:10 pm

Yeah, that’s a really good idea! Fanfiction– MAKE POLLS BEFORE YOU CHANGE STUFF. Please!

  49. Kav

    08/06/2012 at 1:27 pm

This font change is horrid. Change it back, please. Who the heck is this marketed toward? Seriously, whose “readability” has improved with this change? Mobile users? Anyone? And when you zoom out in someone’s profile, in a futile attempt to lessen your eyestrain, the sort options virtually disappear they’re so small. Mutants with this subclass of eyesight shouldn’t get a vote on the site’s aesthetics, IMO.

Also, why not make all visited links change color and not just stories?

  50. Squidgod812

    08/06/2012 at 1:29 pm

The ‘Favorite Stories’ page is all screwed up, I can’t find anything. It’s all out of order and jumbled, it used to be easier to look up my favorite stories and to see the ones that were updated. It was easier when it was one page and in alphabetical order. Please change it back.
