  2. Forum/Community searches now include covers.
  3. Make sure all cover images act as clickable links.

  1. Forum search errors out on certain keywords.
  2. Tiny font issue for forum/community searches.

there’s still a problem with the search engine. No recently updated stories are being returned when searching, everything returned is from 7/25 and before

Why do you keep “fixing” things that aren’t broken? The forums didn’t need covers, nor did they need the new “layout update”. You especially didn’t need to put the comment/thread count in grey text on grey buttons to make it unreadable without significant eye strain. It was perfectly fine the way it was. I shouldn’t have to default to the significantly limited mobile version just to be able to read the forums. Not to mention how long it takes to load the story pages because of covers I don’t even want to see but can’t opt out of without, again, reverting to the limited mobile version.

If anyone reads this, I’d also like to know if/when we might be able to either disable the “profanity” filter on the forums or at least get one that’s not so extremely proactive in filtering. Right now, no one can say they’re working hard on a story because “hard on” is considered profanity for example. A profanity filter is all well and good right up to the point where it start impairing communication.

(Since I couldn’t figure out where to put this.)

I’ve been reading on for 10+ years now. I find some of these new changes frustrating at best. I rant to myself, to my friends on irc, about this.

First, I don’t like the idea of covers. I think its just way to get authors to not write a decent summary to draw in the reader. Thankfully, for my sanity, I am blocking all images on the site.

Its mainly the next points, that really frustrate me. Just yesterday, the favorites page was changed. No longer can I organize my favorite stories by catagory, and because I have so many, they are on four different pages. I would like the option to view my favorites on one page and get back the option to organize by catagory.

Also, when browsing for stories, when I click on a catagory group, I would like the option to view all the catagories in alphabetic order, like it use to be. Some days, I don’t know what I want to read, but I can tell you, I don’t care which catagory has the most stories.

The site, the world, does not revolve around me, but I really need to make my frustrate known. I realize there are reasons for these changes. Maybe to make things more compatible with newer devices, or even to just clean things up. Though, as I am roaming around looking for something good to read, I’m finding it more complicated…less friendly.

Well, thats my rant. Anyone is welcomed to pm me on Author name is Ajaa.

    Thank you,

“I think its just way to get authors to not write a decent summary to draw in the reader.”

If a person isn’t going to not write a decent summary, then they’re not going to write a decent summary with or without a cover. Some writers are still learning to write decent summaries so having the cover image helps get attention they need, while other stories you can’t really write a decent story for, (like one-shot collections) so cover art helps draw in people. That also said, if the reason they aren’t writing a decent summary is because they are lazy and not because they don’t have a talent for it then don’t you think they’ll be lazy when it comes to their cover art too?

And by the way, one can click the “all” button to search all categories. As I’ve told other people, the most popular categories are also going to be most frequented so the site admins likely made the change to make it easier for the vast majority of the site members rather then the select few.

searching your user name and then go to fav on that and you can organize stories by catagory.

Could you tell me how to block images on this site only? I’ve got Firefox.

@Yemi – Its just my opinion on the covers. Don’t have to agree with it, but I see what you mean. As for the ‘All’ button, I noticed it after I posted.

@firedragonboy – Another thing I noticed after I posted, but what an annoying way to go just to read your favorites. And what will happen if the search goes down? Its far easier to go into the interface area to browse through the favorites.

@konarciq – Right click page, click View Page Info, click Media, and just above the white box at the botton of the window is a small box you can select to black images

I still don’t like the new font. I had to download a new app to make it work.

This may be irrelevant to the subject, but for the past few months, I wished that the authors were able to publish stories and their sequels grouped together. It’s still possible to write sequels, of course, but I wish there are other ways to tell the readers that certain stories are sequels of the first one. I don’t really fancy telling it in my profile or the summary, so I’m suggesting maybe a feature of grouping stories into a series could be added in future updates. Please consider my request, and thank you for reading!

I’m definitely not satisfied with the font changes recently. I prefer reading serif fonts, and now that option isn’t available anymore. I also don’t like the Arial font as the default for the entire site. Could you please make it so that logged-in users can change this feature? Thank you.

      08/07/2012 at 1:27 pm

I’m going to add, if this feature were added to a users account, it might be an insentive for some of the anonymous reviewers to sign up for their own accounts.

That’s a good point. If there were any way that the default font could be changed for all readers (both anonymous and logged-in) I would be grateful. I do appreciate all these updates that you all have been doing recently. I’ve been on the site since 2004 and I do enjoy seeing more updates. However that font is my only complaint so far.

I would like a way to find forums based on most recent activity. This would help the small forums that are constantly hidden among the massive list of dead forums. Is there something on the “To Do” List concerning this issue?

I agree, usually th smal and active forums are not seen because of all the dead forums and is frustrating that we don’t get new people because of that.

I agree too. A sort by “last update” would be great.

Yes, all very good, but what are the suggested dimensions of the cover images?

    • yemi hikari

The covers need to be a 6/9 ratio with a recomended size of 300×450 or bigger.

Hi I just wanted to say I personally like the new changes. I’ve been reading on since I was ten so I don’t mind them at all and think they’re cool. =)

    However two things….

One: How can I have multiple communities?

Two: I wish it could be possible for the “host” of a community to have a main review of the stories in that group…like kinda of a critic review thing. Maybe it pops up when the mouse hovers over it or something? Sometimes I think I story is brilliant and overlooked because of the summary (which does take skill to write.) But it’s good to encourage good authors to continue their hard work and for their art to be appreciated. =)

    Thank you for your time!

Recently I’ve been having an issue with the advanced search. The all select won’t open. It opens on my laptop, but not my desktop. It worked two days ago, but hasn’t since yesterday. Please help.

You need to create a connection, and that connection then needs to be accepted. Look beneath “DocX” and you’ll see “Connections.” It’s pretty simple. 🙂

I looked thoroughly for the email to contact you guys and I couldn’t find it. So I’m posting here! Hopefully you’ll still receive this. Regarding the betas, I have a suggestion (which I’m sure you get a lot of). Would it be at all possible for anyone of you to improve the filtering? It gets very, very frustrating as well as annoying when you’re searching for beta-readers, and all the ones you click on haven’t been on fanfiction since years ago (2008, 2009, 2010).
We’re in 2013! I want a beta-reader that’s been logged on to fanfiction sometime this year, this month preferably! It’s been almost a year and a half and I’m still waiting on replies from some beta-readers. It gets ridiculous. Could we have a filter that looks up the beta-readers that are most often logged on, or something similar? You have their “Join Dates” right beneath their usernames.
Why not put a “Last Logged On Date” beneath them too? I really hope you take this into consideration. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Is there a way to delete items from my docx inbox? It is currently deleting the more recent documents rather than those that have been there for nearly twelve months. A delete function like the one on the outbox would be perfect.
