Can we please please please get back the ability to block anonymous reviews? Moderating means I still have to read the things and I hate not being able to respond directly.

They said in an earlier blog about letting the writers publically review to their reviews, but it is still in the works. I actually like your reason for wanting them disabled.

Really like the new navigation bar for the mobile!

About the general site – is there any way to get back the “purple” to mark that the last chapter of the story was read (I’m getting a little frustrated when I select a link only to realize that I already read it or selecting a link two days later to realize that I missed a chapter or two)?

      08/16/2012 at 11:52 am

I agree – I thank you for making some of the links purple once they’ve been followed, but I’d really like everything to show whether I’ve clicked on it or not again.

Thanks. I use mobile all the time, but I have to say this new navigation bar is not exactly mobile-friendly. And I miss the little v shape that takes you directly to the bottom of the page.

    Two requests:
    1. Can you please add ‘review history’ on mobile too?
    2. I think it’s because of the changes in font face, now even XL font size on the mobile site is still somewhat small. Can it be a little bigger?

I like the new navigation bar for fanfiction. But it needs the V back. It’s annoying to have to scroll all the way down. And I read on my iPod touch, the font needs to be smaller it gives me a headache

The ability to change the font size for the mobile site would be wonderful. I read on my Ipod Touch and the larger font is much harder to read and you have to constantly scroll because the words are so much larger.

I have to say that this new ui is easy to use but I liked having the ability to jumped to the bottom of the page just by hitting that little “v” symbol. Also I wish we could go back to changeable font size because on an iPhone there is very little of the stories and summaries that show at a time.

This new look is horrid to use. I always use landscape when using the mobile site because it allowed more words per line and I didn’t have to scroll as much. Now I only get about three or four words even with the smallest text size. It’s already uncomfortable for me to scroll and read a text size that must have been made by and for someone with coke bottle lenses and still near blindness.

The new menu bar is fine, may take a little getting use to but the text is really horrid.
Whether it’s just a temporary thing while the menu adjusts itself, or it’s a glitch with the programming, please tell me it was not a deliberate change. It’s far more difficult to read, it won’t even let me zoom the entire page out, like it used to, to make the text smaller.

Maybe you could have an option to use the old format if you can not change it, then you could at least let us choose the most comfortable to use. People have different mobiles and different browsers and different preferences when it comes to reading online, and some features may not present themselves the same way for each type.

    Thanks for this latest update!

Here is a feature suggestion – that the list of fandoms the author’s written in, at the top of their profile, be placed in alphabetical order. At the moment, it’s the chronological order of the fandoms they wrote in, as you see when you click on profiles. I think alphabetical fandom order is a more practical order for readers who look at a profile to see if the author wrote in any other fandoms that they know.

The chronological order of the author’s fandoms is already available by sorting the stories by the default order of date updated, so I think placing the fandom list in alphabetical order would be a useful feature. Some authors have written in a lot of fandoms, so it’s much easier to see at a glance if they share more than one fandom for you if the list is in alphabetical order.

      08/15/2012 at 2:22 am

      Great idea!

Some authors who I greatly enjoy reading have written for hundreds of fandoms. When I visit their profiles, I usually use my browser’s ‘find’ feature to look for specific shows/movies. I can sort their work by category, but it’s easy to overlook a fandom. Being able to get a quick alphabetical listing would be very helpful.

    • yemi hikari

      08/15/2012 at 2:44 am

Yes please, and place the “misc.” categories at the end. If I want to know which fandom a writer’s written in first I’ll check their stories.

Uggg, the new text is so huge on my iPod. I use the mobile site because the text was small. Now the next is huge and clunky. I absolutely hate it because it makes it harder to navigate.

I muchly preferred the old one. Change it back or at least give us the option to revert :,(

I’m not entirely sure what others mean when they say the font is suddenly huge on their mobile – if anything, it seems smaller to me now. My eyesight isn’t perfect, but it isn’t terrible, and I often read in bed without my glasses. Even using the extra-large font, it’s still a bit small sometimes, and I’m pretty sure it’s smaller than it used to be. Maybe to make everyone happy, make the differences between the sizes bigger? It sounds like making the small smaller and the large larger will make everyone happy 🙂

I’m loving the new font you found and are using for the mobile, by the way. It’s very easy to read~

The new navigation bar looks fine to me – I’m running Safari on an iPhone 4. Though, I might suggest taking out all the links under the search bar? They look kind of busy, and you can find the exact same things by clicking on your username in the line above. I think it’d look much cleaner that way.

Small things – profile links/centering still aren’t working on mobile D: In addition, when I click on my links on my laptop, the confirmation window pops up, but there isn’t a link in it. I use Chrome and I’m running Adblock…I tried it on Firefox, also running its Adblock, and it works fine, so I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here…

Thank you so much for all your work on the site! Seriously, I’m loving it 🙂

I read in landscape so i can read more on each line. The font for small is what you would think was XL, so now I have to scroll down about 5-10 times just so I can read maybe 2 paragraphs. I read on ipod touch 4th gen.

I agree with other posts saying we need the “v” to get to the bottom of the page back. I use fanfiction solely on mobile on my ipod touch and using that button made it so much wasier to get to the bottom of the page. Scrolling causes more time and inconvenience. I hope you make another update re-introducing the “v” button.

About making it easier to report stories, would it possibly make it easier for both the people using the site and the site admins if the report system was more like how we pick out what fandom we’re writing for?

For example, we select books, and then we can pick Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Twilight ecetera.

So, for reporting fanfics we would pick “not allowed: interactive, chat/script, real person, mst and etc. and they the person reporting can pick interactive, chat/script, real person, mst and etc., or any number of things. This would also help the admins possibly keep track of what the worst infractions are, not to mention it will help them get RPF off the site much faster.

I’d like to see future blog posts that clarify some of the rules such as the ones that prohibit real person stories, copyrighted song lyrics and submit-your-own-whatever stories. Maybe fewer violations would be posted if writers saw explanations from site administrators rather than from critic groups.

Perhaps another future blog post could tackle the subject of reporting abuse, and where site administrators stand on that issue.

I like some of the changes.
However the removal of the ‘v’ button from the mobile format to take the reader straight to the bottom of the page is not good and makes it difficult for users. Secondly, putting ‘last’ instead of the actual number of pages is ineffective and I find myself clicking last first to see how many pages there are.
Please put these useful yet simple tools back.

Friggen iphones. Seems like FF is deciding to get with the times and updating everything to fit. Not really liking it through. I use the mobile version on my pc (because I can’t stand the site layout) and it’s so off putting. Also, not being an iphone user, the mobile version is so awkward on my phone and the ‘more’ tab really doesn’t work with what I have.

Oh well, just a shame there isn’t some awesome button in existence that lets you view pages the way they were before an update made them obsolete.

What kind of phone do you have? I have an android phone and the mobile layout doesn’t look any different than before besides the navigation bar and a few small things. I use the mobile version all the time when I’m on the move and I’m having no problems whatsoever so far.

      • KageNoNeko

        08/15/2012 at 8:57 pm

I don’t know what the other poster’s phone is, but using Opera Mini on the Rumor Touch makes the new navigation bar jarring the viewer’s eye.

It has the site name and then Just after that before going to the second line where in is under the Just. Then between the two lines is Community Forum with not a lot visual clues about what word goes with which what. Also at the end of the first line is a line like this | and then it repeats at the start of the second line.

      • MMC

        08/15/2012 at 9:46 pm

@KageNoNeko: Oh, then I guess I wouldn’t know the layout for that since I’m not using Opera Mini. If the layout does look as you described, then that sucks. =/

Can we get the V (go to the bottom) back ? I want to be able to change my search parameter faster than scrolling all the way down on my 3DS.

  29. Curious girl

    08/15/2012 at 7:57 am

I noticed almost instantly that the ‘V’ button is gone. I like reading stories, but sometimes I have no time to review afterwards. I usually rebview those stories when I find time, so the ‘V’ button is really useful. I tried typing the link (I spent too much time using it, that I know how to type the #d_menu after the url), but it takes time. I liked having to just click the button. Typing in an iPhone or iPod is not the same with typing in a computer. It takes more time. I hope you’ll consider giving us the button back.

  32. Schermionie

    08/15/2012 at 12:06 pm

I’m glad to hear that there are now commmunities on the mobile version – that’s something I’ve been wanting for a long time, so thanks! As for the rest, I’ll have to wait until I can get on my phone to see what I think of it. If you have removed the ‘V’, however, you really should put that back because it was one of the best things about the mobile version. Before I realised it was there, I found myself having to scroll down through stories that were in the tens of thousands of words long on my little Blackberry… not fun.

I’m currently having huge problems with the ffnet line break not showing up in my story. I put them in and they disappear. I also can’t delete line breaks I’ve put in but want to get rid of. Please, please, please could you find out a way to fix this because it’s not the first time this has happened and line breaks are extremely important to the flow of stories. I’m sure that a lot of people try to avoid using the line break feature you provide because it is so glitchy (not to mention, for some stories, a small line break is much more appropriate than one that takes up the whole page, but that’s another matter entirely…).

On the subject of formatting, why have you removed ♥, ~, + and ^ from forum posts, stories and reviews? Why are asterisks and double dashes (–) suddenly allowed again – not that I’m complaining about that – but those three things suddenly not? I ask because it is both disruptive to communication and limits writers of freeverse poetry, of whom there are many on ffnet. The fact that this change is retroactive has ruined already-posted poems. Ffnet’s near constant indecision about formatting is very disruptive.

Oh, and why can’t we use the greater than/less than signs, either? Why are brackets banned from summaries? (Well, the last time I checked they were,,,) Why do hyphens not show up in story titles?

Now for some things that I would like to see added to the site…

I’m a Mod at a busy forum and find the ability to edit, delete and lock posts and topics and so on vital to keeping the forum clean. One thing I can’t do, however, is edit the title of topics, something that is just as important to keeping it clean because we have a few rules on the proper naming of threads that need to be followed, but often aren’t. This means I have to waste a lot of time telling people to change them, how to change them, what to change them to – and then hope that they do it. Then there are some important threads that need their titles changed, but they were made by people who are no longer active. I don’t see why being able to edit the title of a topic is any less invasive than being able to edit the posts themselves.

Then there is the limit on the number of pinned threads. Our forum is so incredibly huge that we need more than ten – eleven or twelve, maybe. I understand that it’s so the first page doesn’t get cluttered, and if someone were to clutter the first page of a forum with pinned threads, they would deserve the irritation of its members. But I think you should consider trusting Mods and Admins to know what they’re doing. This limit is only limiting the forum and giving us a lot of work and a lot of stress trying to combine threads that desperately need pinning because we can’t pin them on their own.

Then, the length of time we can ban people for. Yes, it’s great to be able to ban people for short amounts of time, but some offences warrant much more than a week’s ban, but much less than ‘forever’. It’s a huge difference – and an important one. At the moment, if I wanted to ban someone for, say, two months, I would have to renew the ban eight times.

Furthermore, is it possible to reverse a ban of ‘forever’? I think this should be allowed as sometimes banning someone forever turns out to not be the right decision. I’ve seen this happen in other forums and it’s not good.

Then, there is what happens to a forum if its Admin disappears. As I’ve mentioned, the forum I Mod for is very large. It has only two Mods who still come on and our time is limited, however. If there’s a problem, we might not be around to stop it. We desperately want to make more Mods and, knowing several people on the forum who would be suitable and are more active than us, we’re perfectly capable of selecting people who would make brilliant ones – we would know better than our Admin, who is never around. I’ve contacted her twice about this and she has never replied. If Mods were also able to make other Mods, this wouldn’t be a problem at all.

I also asked her about transferring the Adminship to a joint account the Mods would create and all have access to, but that wasn’t replied to, either.

I have two suggestions for improving DocX.

I think you should increase the limit of DocX documents that can be in our inboxes at one time. The DocX system is amazing and one of the best things about your website, but for those who beta multi-chaptered stories and/or a lot of stories at once, it’s not suitable to have to keep deleting sent documents. It’s so much more convenient to be able to see what you’ve edited in previous chapters with just a few clicks, especially as I always edit what I’ve written even more once it’s in Doc Manager so the original saved copy on my computer is not the same version I send off. I also re-use comments, explanations and examples I’ve written out when betaing in the past instead of writing them again, something that’s made impossible if I can’t access the doc they were in. It could have been sent months or even years ago, long since vanished from the Doc Manager – which I hate cluttering up with docs I might not even need.

I would also love it if I could download DocX docs in my inbox *both* the way I can now and also directly into my Doc Manager, so that I can edit it straight away. As I don’t have a word processor that keeps the formatting when I copy and paste into it (and probably won’t be able to get one either due to lack of harddrive space), I spend a lot of time having to go through and re-do all the italics, bolds, et cetera of the original. Being able to download it into the Doc Manager would stop me having to do so!

However, I do absolutely love the look of the ‘downloaded’ DocXs now – it’s much clearer and easier to read than Docs in the Doc Manager. I would only like this update if we could keep them both and I think that would keep everyone happy.

On that subject, would there be any way for people to make the font smaller/larger in the Doc Manager? Obviously it would have to not affect the font of the stories when published – it would just make it easier for people to read when editing their stories. Right now, it’s so small that I hate using it. It hurts my eyes – especially because it is on the harsh white background instead of the beautiful soft black one I read published stories in – and I miss errors that I woud otherwise not.

That was a long post, I know… I hope you will consider everything I have said. These changes would make me love your site that much more. 🙂

Yes please. This would make it easier to edit stuff, but we won’t be able to have the colored fonts anymore. I also wonder about the symbols you mention. I think it was because certain people abused it for titles and such, and the “” symbols are removed because that is part of html coding.

The new menu bar is . . . a hassle. It is too large on smaller phones and blocks half the text and now it wont scroll away. I like everything else you have changed though. The menu bar though blocks alot of the story or I can’t see the first storys in the fandom because it is covered by the menu bar. Otherwise I really enjoy the changes you have been making! What’s up with the new bar at the top ? The options like Fanfiction, Just In, ect. are crushed together, and it looks really weird. But the annoying part is when it follows you when your scroll down ! It’s really bad-looking on mobile and super distracting when trying to read ! It just follows you everywhere, stuck at the top of your screen !

Even in the middle of a story, it’s there, all weird with the words squashed up on top of eachother, following you down the screen and it makes less reading space. I don’t even use those buttons anyway ! It also lands really choppy -if that makes sense- when I scroll down, so it’s even more distracting ! It dosen’t stay put at the top of the screen when it follows you, it kinda dissapears a bit and then pops up again super fast, so it’s always there, all glitch-y !

Please change it back so that it stays at the top of the page and not follow you like it used to ?

I also miss the “purple” to mark which links we clicked before. Yes, it’s done on the links to fics that we’ve read; having the purple to indicate any OTHER links that we’ve clicked in the past would be very much more convenient.

I absolutely hate the new mobile toolbar. I have a Nintendo DSi that I use to read when I don’t want to log into my computer, or when it is general inconvenient to use a laptop. The way it follows when I scroll down is driving me nuts. And it looks generally, like a jumbled mess. As a long time author and reader, I am disappointed with the new format for mini systems. Can you please either remove the “follow as you scroll” thingy or make it a choice rather than an irritating and unchangeable part of the site?

Please change the mobile site back to the way it was. I don’t have an IPhone or a blackberry or anything just a regular cell, and the new mobile site makes it impossible to read anything. I use the landscape position when using my phone and I can not read any stories on my phone now, the new navigation bar takes too much much room and when I scroll down, the navigation bar stays stationary on to while the stories down below scroll but I cannot see that because of the new navigation bar. Also stories (on the mobile site) are not fully showing up, the first updated story in my favorite, the title and part of the summary are cut off so I cannot read it or even really know which story it is, and when I try to use the regular site on my phone I still can’t read any stories in on my favorites list because every time I click the ‘favorite stories’ button on mt phone, nothing happens. So really, please change the mobile site back, because me and I’m sure other’s like me are now no longer able to use you site while on the go

Hi, I have a blackberry curve 8530 and I really don’t like the menu bar being stuck to the top of the page as I scroll down. Is there a way to unstick it? It is very distracting.

Also, I’ve tried to read stories using opera mini and the spacing is all wrong and sometimes words in italics are shown as regular text. Everything is squished together also.

    Any help would be appreciated.

From what you are saying, it sounds like no testing on the various mobile platforms occured. Yes there is a lot of mobile browsers, but I believe they should have been able to do the major ones such as Opera Mini and Safari.

I don’t like the fact that the navigation bar keeps on following me as I read downwards. It annoys me because I usually read from the top of the page but now the nav bar blocks the texts making it a nuisance. I really hope there’s an option to make it stay at the top.

Also, I usually read in contrast (change the background to black) but the new nav bar is white. Either it stays permanently white or I haven’t found a button to make it black, it irritates me because it can be really bright. The nav bar is not really a favourite at the moment.
