Category Filter for Story Favorites and Alerts/Follows

23 Aug

Replacing the deprecated category sorting option we had before, we are introducing a more useful and powerful category filtering option to the story management pages for both Favorites and Alerts/Follows. This should help those with hundreds if not thousands of favorites/follows in various categories.

  1. DocX send limit has been increased to 100.
  2. Favorited stories management page now has a “Category Filter” option.
  3. Followed/Alerted stories management page now has a “Category Filter” option.

Yay, I’ve been wanting something like this for what seems like forever. πŸ™‚

Would you be willing to make the default sorting option on the Favorites/Alerts pages Update Date instead of add date? It would make clearing out finished or unwanted stories much easier.

You guys just absolutely made my day! I go onto my favorites, only to find out I can now sort by category!!! I love the new system and I’m so glad you guys listen to your users πŸ™‚ I knew you’d take our thoughts into consideration! Thank you sooooo much!!!

What about a list of “Last Read”?

    • Random Ipsy

      08/24/2012 at 9:34 pm

Oh, the Last Read idea is a great one! And thank you FFN for the category filtering! I was wondering, are you guys ever considering doing an adult version of FFN? I know there’s adultfanfiction, but their site is so outdated. Not to mention you’re THE site to go to for fanfiction, so if you made a site like that, then every one would have a place to post gore stories or more mature romance stories. Just wondering. Thanks for all the site upgrades!

Great job but i do want to mention that i have seen a few broken links on users profiles. The link appears fine but the coding is messed up so i don’t think it is the users fault but instead a coding error.

  6. Shawnesty

    08/24/2012 at 12:58 am

Users that have links in their profiles need to probably reinsert them, when the site began allowing links once more, some of them remained disabled so they probably need to be redone by the person posting them. If it’s possible, you might contact those users whose links you can’t access and suggest they redo them.

Just FYI on the links, I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Links work in Firefox, not Internet Explorer. Play with the Popup settings that should *cross fingers* work. If there is a setting for IE that we should know about could you let us know, Xing. Thanks

    Awesome, guys. Thank you! πŸ™‚
If at all possible, would it be okay if you guys could also give us a “Preview” button for the review boxes? I already do the whole doublechecking before submitting thing, but I’d like to know what the ‘final product’ will look like before sending out anyways.

    Thanks again!

Ooh, I like the idea of a preview button for reviews! Maybe I could catch some of my awkward sentences. πŸ™‚

        08/24/2012 at 3:52 am

Yeah. I sometimes miss the little things in my reviews; especially when they’re long. I tend to zone out on them after reading the same thing a few times. lol

      • Guest

        08/24/2012 at 4:28 am

I have a bad habit of wanting to rephrase a sentence mid-review, so I scroll back up to rewrite it. Seems simple enough, only I delete too much or not enough, resulting in butchered sentences with lots of missing words or extra words that don’t belong. When I double check to make sure the review posted, I want to stick my head in the sand. πŸ™‚

      • konarciq

        08/24/2012 at 5:36 am

I’ll third it! It happens all too often that you catch yourself on an awkward sentence while trying to correct the author on a similar mistake πŸ˜€ Or that the moment you press “enter” you remember there was one other thing you wanted to add…

Thanks for the category sort option back, but I have to say I liked the old method better. I enjoyed sorting my fics by category and seeing them all at once, on the same page. It helped when I wasn’t sure what mood I was in or what fic I wanted to read. The different pages for each category does not do that for me.
Related to that, is there any chance of getting the whole follows list back to one page?
Thanks again for listening to comments and feedback!

If it not such a bother I would like to see another feature within the watchlist; showing the story status. Add a ‘status’ column or code in something that put completed/ongoing right beside every stories title. Knowing a story status at glance will be useful and it makes managing easier.

    • konarciq

      08/27/2012 at 3:07 pm

It used to be the first item in the grey line, instead of the last, as it is now. I, too, found that easier to see it at a glance.

I would still like it if you returned the favorites/alerts list back into a one page list instead several separate ones. I like how you are re-adding the sorting options. Mobile communities still says my communities do not exist when I sort them, but the communities work fine on the desktop.

s it possible for you to make mobile not the default for cell phones? I actually hate using mobile on my cell, and I find it annoying that every time I go to the website nowI have to manually change which version I’m using. Even when I use links on my cell to the story, it’s automatically changes to mobile when before it stayed in desktop form. The way I like it. This didn’t start happening on my cell until the update for the communities.

    • MMC

      08/24/2012 at 2:03 pm

I don’t want to sound like a stick in the mud, but isn’t that the purpose of the “mobile” site? It’s for devices on the move when you can’t carry a computer/laptop everywhere with you. For the mobile site to NOT be the default site for mobile devices seems kind of odd to me…

But I guess if you want like a button that just changes the mobile to regular site for everything when you’re logged in, I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask.

      • Shooting Sword

        08/24/2012 at 2:07 pm

I find that the normal site works well on my phone. However, its also better reading while using the mobile site. I’ll always use the normal site if I want to reply to someone’s review or PM! Though, I find both on a mobile can screw up what you’re writing.

      • MMC

        08/24/2012 at 2:52 pm

Ah okay. Well I strictly read on the mobile site when I’m using my phone. I leave the writing/replying to things when I use the regular site on an actual computer (I find that I can’t type properly on my phone even though I have a smartphone :P). The only times I would actually switch to the regular site on my phone is if I have to report a story.

Which reminds me… FFN staff, would it be okay to add a report button to the mobile site too please?

Here’s a suggestion! Can we also have sort by author feature for the story favorite/alert. We also need a sorting feature in the authors section of favorites and alerts. Please revert back to a one page list. It is insanely annoying having to search through several pages to find the story or author you want to delete.

Nice to see that you’re looking into the sorting of favourites again, but you haven’t helped those of us that just read one type of story. 1. We need to be able to sort by update, which also comes out alphabetically. 2. You need to put all favourites back onto one page. I am aware that 3 of the stories I follow have disappeared, as I keep a track of the numbers, but I currently have no way of finding out which ones they are. At least before I could copy my favourites into a spreadsheet and sort it alphabetically to find out which were gone. Having to copy over 20+ pages is impossible.

For the Alerts section, can you add a category to show the user if a story was completed or not? Sometimes, I forgot to remove a completed story and I have to manually go through the the alert list to check which ones are done so I can keep my list under control. It wouldn’t have to be big, just a the small red C and a black W for work in progress. I still think we should have a status for story on hiatus or something like that. Maybe one for abandoned. I don’t know if that abandoned tag would get much use though.

Personally I use the iphone so I tend to use the mobile site automatically. The only quirky thing is that when the window flips, the page scrolls up back up at the top instead of staying at the point where I was reading. Annoying if you ask me but I think it has to do with iphone because I didn’t have that issue with my old phone which was a regular android touchscreen.

I also vote for the one page feature, especially if you have them sorted by category.

The one thing I have trouble about posting suggestions on this site is that sometimes it jumps non-linearly. I was hoping to set up a forum that would be able to have guides for new users but I can also have a section where people can post suggestions for the site and others can debate about it.
    Forum Link:

    Just wondering.

Hi, I guess this is good. It seems your moving back to what needed to be done.

Perhaps we could have a spell/grammar check for reviews as well? I know I leave lengthy reviews and I would like to not have to copy and paste them into word before submitting them. It’s okay if you don’t but I think it would make it easier on people who leave really long reviews.

Please go back to the single page for alerts and favorites – I can’t find anything! As I have suggested before, maybe you could add a “view all” button so those of us who want to can see all our alerts/favorites on same page.

I agree with the suggestion to provide an indicator for completed stories – how about if the link for completed stories was a different color? That way they would stand out and wouldn’t need a new button.

Could you please raise the number of days the ads are disabled? Everyday it is a bother to block the ads, my internet is so slow, and your ads are constantly making it slower. A few years back, you had the ad blocker set at three days, why not doing the same now?

I’m sure there are other people who have the same problem.

    • lord_spyridon

      08/24/2012 at 9:51 pm

If I remember, they explained that they couldn’t afford having the ad blocker last for three days since we don’t pay for the service. The ads pay for the expenses acrued by the site. The compromise was that the accounts would continue to be free but the ad blocker would be brought down to only a day. I got used to it.

    • d[O_O]p

      08/24/2012 at 10:02 pm

There are ads? I never seen them. Why not get Adblock add-on for your browser? You can also use it to block those pointless ‘story cover’ images and/or profiles images.

      08/24/2012 at 10:36 pm

I’m extremely grateful that we’re allowed to block the ads in the first place. Yes, I have to enable ad blocker every day, but it’s really not a big deal and only takes a couple of seconds.

        08/24/2012 at 11:22 pm

My browsers ad blocker prevents all the ads from working, so just get the add on adblock for Firefox or Chrome. I’m not sure whether iE has it.

        08/26/2012 at 4:12 pm

I agree that asking for more ways to block ads is kind of bad form. I am so glad that the site is self-sustaining enough to be profitable with the unintrusive ads they have now. In fact, FFN, if you want to add a tip jar, I’d be happy to kick in some PayPal funds to thank you for keeping this great site up and running. πŸ˜€

See, when the Ad Blocker lasted for three days, I was always forgetting to update it. One day is so much better for me, and even if it weren’t, I’m just grateful for having Ad Blocker in the first place.

The only thing I dislike is how they moved it to the bottom of the page instead of at the top where it used to be. But that’s about it.

Hello, I tried to contact you through e-mail client, but couldn’t. I really need your help with a pressing matter concerning my story, Beside Himself. You see, I have been working on a story for almost two years now and somehow I accidentally managed to delete it. It had almost 500 reviews and almost 80 chapters on it. I have so many loyal fans and readers I posted a new version of this old story I accidentally deleted, but I really plead with you to possibly somehow restore my story back to my account with my reviews. I’ve worked so long and hard on this fic that it is part of my identity as a writer, it shows my advancement in writing and were most of my entire fanbase comes from. I feel horrible for it being gone and I beg of you to please try and get it back on my account for me and the sake of my loyal readers. I’m not in it for the reviews either, I just worked so hard on that fic that I cried when it deleted somehow. I hope that you see this and please help to restore my story to my account along with all the reviews I worked very hard for.

You know what else would be great for filtering? A Filter OUT option be it in advanced search or in general.Meaning there would be a way to filter our certain genres. To keep things simple only 1 genre would be omitted, or if there was an option available for multiple, some sort of filter that takes out specifics.

    Simple yes? …No?

I still agree with the others about at least an option to change the view back to just one page for alerts/favorites if possible. And an indicator for completed or in-progress stories for favorites and alerts would be a great idea, too!

If someone blocked you from reviewing, with the current layout you find out only after you click ‘submit review’. As in, the review text is wasted. The old system showed an error message before you’d type anything. If a mod’s reading this, would be nice to have the review field blanked out or see a notification from the get-go that a review can’t be submitted.

    Thanks for the update, Xing.

I was wondering if there could be a translators secion, just like the beta-readers.
In some fandoms appear unofficial ‘translators groups’ that take a story without the original authors permission only adding a disclaimer in the first chapter (sometimes they don’t even add the disclaimer). There are times when there is more than one translation of the same story and the translators are reported and flamed because people think they are plagiarizing. The site might need some organization on that.

I’m not sure but there seems to be a problem with the review counts. For example, a story shows a certain number of reviews but when you go in and read them, there are more reviews than stated on the stories page. These are not new reviews but are a couple of days old and they are not registering in the review numbers on the front.

This has only just happened in the last couple of days – perhaps it’s to do with the IE issues that was mentioned in the previous thread comments. (I only use IE)

    • Guest

      08/26/2012 at 5:54 am

I’ve noticed this, too. It seems the review count reflects signed-in reviews. There is a delay before the guest reviews are counted. FWIW, I primarily use IE also.

Sometimes while I’m in the little area you go to when you hit your penname in the corner, I cannot open up the little tabs (whatever they are) and get to a place like for example:

I just upadated my profile and I want to go check it out via hitting the link on my settings page. When I click account the things that drop down come out. Okay, click again or click somewhere else, still doesn’t work.

    BTW I use IE8(I believe)

  43. Neta

    08/26/2012 at 4:55 pm

Thank you for this! I’m glad we can filter our alerts and favorites now.

I have a few suggestions for new things. These are just some ideas I’ve had after using the site for about 8 or 9 years.

Could we possibly sort stories excluding a character? For example, I like the CSI: Miami fandom and I love Horatio’s character. But I don’t like reading the Horatio and Calleigh pairing. Could we have an option where we can refine the stories so I could exclude Calleigh when I search for Horatio-related stories? Of course I mean this in every fandom, the CSI: Miami reference is just an example.

Another thing, if we could have an Original Character option standard in each fandom, it would be nice. That way those who like OCs can refine their searches to include it, and those who aren’t fond of OCs could refine their searches to exclude them using my previous idea.

I also would think it would be nice if could have a free app for Android, iPhone, etc. I know it’s a bit of a stretch, and I understand it would take a LOT of developing. Obviously making an app is no simple task. But it would be nice if there were a way for authors to upload via smartphone or tablet and be able to use all of the features just as those accessing it through a computer can. I’ve tried to do this from my Android phone and my Nook using the link to take me to the site, but the document editor doesn’t work with either.

Of course those are just my crazy ideas. They may or may not be good ones, but I would be grateful if you’d at least consider them. Thank you for all that you do! πŸ™‚

    • James

      08/26/2012 at 5:02 pm

I fully agree with all those suggestions. I love reading stories with OC’s and I hate certain pairings (like how every other story in the pokemon archive is Ash and Misty). It would also be nice to extend the exclusion option to the genre filter. That way people can exclude entire genres they dislike to get a better read.

    • Guest

      08/26/2012 at 5:23 pm

I like your suggestion of being able to sort stories to exclude a character. I would certainly use this feature in larger fandoms to weed out the pairings I don’t like.

I’ve never really understood how some fandoms become so romance-centered when it has nothing to do with the theme of the show/movie. πŸ™‚

  44. Lavender Flame

    08/26/2012 at 6:38 pm

I agree with the idea of being able to exclude characters — I’m mostly in the Hunger Games Fandom and recommend minor pairing/character fics on a fansite; being able to search a minor character and filter out the ones including, say, Katniss as the other would really be helpful.

Perhaps something similar for genre, too? For example, if I’m looking for a mentor-type fic between two characters, I could filter out the “romance” ones? Sometimes if you filter for a genre — maybe “hurt/comfort” or something similar — the other genre is still there….

I also agree with the “OC” standard, though some major Fandoms have it already (I think Harry Potter does, at least). Someone sending in a request for it in a certain category might be easier than adding it to every one, especially considering the amount of books/etc. with less than even ten fics in them. But then again, it might not be; in any case, I think “OC” should be a character listing that’s open to add.

    Thank you for everything!

I want family fanfics that aren’t romance based myself.

I’ve seen it needed in smaller fandoms that don’t have many fanfics though. The OC tag that is.

You mean something like a filter that can block out certain stories using a key phrase? (Like for example, if you were a Naruto fan and you just don’t care to see slash on the fanfic list, the filter can block out the stories that have “slash” or “yaoi” in it and you can see the stories you’d probably prefer to read.) I usually don’t like to raise a hissy fit over the Sonic section because I just see it mostly as just kids having fun and what have you, but if I could filter out stories that include OCs (I know some are necessary but I just…really don’t like OC-centric fics that don’t focus on the other characters) or certain pairings I just don’t like, I think that would be a great feature for the site and will make finding good fics you want to read much easier.

I would welcome being able to search for both genres of a story. Say I want a light-hearted family-centric fanfiction – I can only search for Humour or Family at the moment, not both. If I select Family, I might get loads of Angst and Tragedy and so on, and if I type in Humour, I’ll undoubtedly get tons of Romance and all the other genres. I consider this one of the few flaws – if not the only one – in your amazing navigation system.

I really wish you would do something about the forums. I go there to try and find things like writing tips or critiques and all you find are roleplaying topics. You can’t even sort through them to find actual writing topics. It is impossible. I also wish you would allow more leeway when it comes to M and MA stories. Not every author here is a teen or kid and some works are more plot oriented with adult scenes and themes sprinkled throuought; not pure smut found on places like AFF.

How about the “sort by author” option previously available? Truthfully the original sorting format was more functional and far better than what you have in place now

Please make the favorites 1 page again, I have almost 2000 stories on my list, and it’s a pain to go through 30 pages. At least give us a option to view all stories on ‘ page. Please!
