Simplified Searching

11 Sep

We have unified the search input field which simplifies complex searches as you can now include exclusion keywords in the same field.

  • Unified keywords search. Previously, you had to put in exclusion keywords in a separate input field. It is now just a single keywords entry and you just prefix the keywords you want to exclude with a “-” dash/minus character.

  1. Search for love and peace: love peace.
  2. Search for the phrase “love peace”: “love peace”. Notice the double quotes.
  3. Search for love but not peace: love -peace.
  4. Search for phrase “love peace” but not “love war”: “love peace” -“love war”

Oh! I like this feature! It reminds me of how to search for research articles/topics at my post secondary school! 🙂 I think I’m going to like using this feature and it doesn’t seem hard to use. Will test it out eventually.

Thank you so much, Xing and staff!

So, you Googlefied it? Thank you. That will be helpful.

You could do that already using the “Exclude these words” fields, you know.

Exactly, and now I have to go through and redo ALL my searches, which is going to be a real hassle since in some categories, I was filtering out multiple pairings.

        09/12/2012 at 4:56 pm

If you wrote: non-yaoi in the old search it would still come up with stories with the word yaoi.

    • acaciajules

      09/15/2012 at 1:00 pm

That’s because you’re an idiot. all you had to do, was type yaoi in the filter box, and it would have ignored anything that was yaoi. By typing ‘non-yaoi’ is was only going to filter out anything labled non-yaoi. Duh.

      • ~Cherry!~

        09/15/2012 at 2:07 pm

What’s with the hate? You trying to be a smart ass? In the old search box if you typed yaoi it would come up with all stories that were yaoi. With stories with: not a non-yaoi. In their summaries it would still come up because of the word yaoi.
Now stop with the offense it makes you seem immature.

What he’s saying is that if you used the ‘include’ filter to search for ‘non-yaoi’, it would treat ‘non’ and ‘yaoi’ as separate words and search for both separately.

Now, don’t you feel silly about calling him an idiot? :p

        09/18/2012 at 4:16 pm

Yeah, I know. Unless you put “d” around the words, it has ALWAYS searched for it as singular words, not as a term. So of COURSE if you type yaoi, you’re going to get yaoi stories!

Ugh, I HATE this feature. Now ALL the searches I had saved have to be redone. And what if there are MULTIPLE words you’re avoiding, not a phrase. There doesn’t seem to be any advice.

    • Filly8

      09/15/2012 at 3:06 am

you can search for multiple words. Look at the first example. It you want to search two words for instance “dog” and “cat” then you sould simply put: dog cat in the search box. if you want the phrase dogs cat the you place: “dog cat” in the box 🙂

I was wondering why it didn’t work this way in the first place. This is a nice change. 😀

Can we have an exclusion option for the browsing page next? That way we can filter out genres/character pairings that we dislike. You can make it like the category bars and select the ones you dislike for a simplified way. This might be a problem because it might look like it crowds the top of the page (or bottom on the mobile version) but I think that many would like the option to have it. Consider it.

On the mobile/ iPod version of fanfiction how do you get to the search engine as I thought it was when you clicked on more at the top of the page but whenever I click on that on my iPod it doesn’t do anything. So I was wondering if there was another way to access it as I can’t find any of the stories that I like. Can you please help me

is it just my computer or does sort by update date still not work? Is there a fix for that anytime soon?

Thank you for the update, Xing. I’ve been trying different searches using the new functionality and am getting better results than I previously did.

This is a good start, but you know would be even better? Filtering out a whole category. One or two words can only get you so far, but filtering out a genre (ex. Romance) would really improve the search feature.

    • John

      09/13/2012 at 11:59 pm

I’ve been saying that for a while, and others have agreed with me also. Only I have no idea if Xing and his team have seen this and taking it into consideration. I can’t even begin to fathom how much coding it would take to add this in, but it’d be an awesome feature to have.

    • ~Cherry!~

      09/14/2012 at 2:00 am

      You can do that already.

      • John

        09/14/2012 at 9:00 am

No, I meant in the browsing section, not search. In browsing, you can only search one genre, and it’s annoying filtering through the character/genre pairings you dislike.

Sounds good, but while you’re working on the search engine, are you aware of the problem being discussed here?

New stories don’t seem to be indexing and are not findable with the search engine. Really frustrating.

I miss the old search engine

  15. Astoria25

    09/15/2012 at 11:30 am

I miss the old search engine too. Old fics aren’t coming up and it discriminates unnecessaily. In fact, just the other day I remembered the fic “I’m With Sasuke” existed (I recommended it for a friend… Yes, I know; I have questionable friendships), so I put it between double quotes and it should’ve come up, no brainer, right? Wrong! It said that the fic didn’t exist! (which, admittedly, was a possiblity). So I tried serching «I’m with Sasuke» (notice lack of double quotes). Logically, fics named «I’m with Sasuke» should be up first and even though I narrowed the search down until it had all the criteria I coul remember about the piece of fanfiction it still *didn’t* came up for me. Google yielded much better results (the successful search: «”I’m With Sasuke”». Methinks Google knoweth better than the site’s search engine).

I’m really sorry if I come across as grumpy and bitter but I’m still a *little* bit peeved that Google was succesful in finding the fic I wanted to link to whereas the site’s engine wasn’t. I never had such problem with the old engine (I do admit it was more tedious to shift through the results).

PD: Just to offer more evidence, just now I did a trial run with “I’m With Sasuke” (fail). Then I did a trial run with one of my bleach favourites of all time, “There’s Something about Zaraki” (fail). Then I did it with «There’s something about Zaraki» (lack of double quotes; success). Then I did it with “Death of the Old World” (success). Then I did it with “Naruto of the Shikon” (success). Then I did it with “Sexy Captain’s Curse” (fail). Then I did it with «Sexy Captain’s Curse» (success).

I think I know the problem now: the search engine doesn’t allow for apostrophes. All my successes had words that *didn’t* have apostrophes when I double-quoted them. How can you fix that? I have no such problems with Google.

And, again, I’m sorry with the grumpy wording.

    • ~Cherry!~

      09/15/2012 at 2:08 pm

Yeah, entering it in google works better. I guess it’s just the way your used too. Some people would prefer using the site’s search box, others their browser engine.

    • yemi hikari

      09/15/2012 at 3:30 pm

If you search for the word “with” nothing shows up. I think this ties into the fact the admins never allowed searches for these words in the first place because they were way to short and would turn up way to many results. This needs to be fixed I thinks.

    • Astoria25

      09/16/2012 at 7:03 am

@~Cherry!~ Indeed, but what’s convenient about the site’s search box is that it doesn’t come up the results from otehr fanfiction sites, like from, I dunno, mugglenet, sugarquill, adultfanfiction, narutofics, etc.

@yemi hikari I think it should search for the word “with”, too; in some cases the fic’s name is way too short and it would be veyr useful

I think I should clear up my post. At the end of my grumpy post I said that I believed (and still do) that I found a problem, a glitch, with the search engine. It doesn’t allows for apostrophes when double-quoting a search. Thus:

“There’s Something About Zaraki” — FAIL

There’s Something About Zaraki — SUCCESS

A Place for Warriors — SUCCESS

      “Sexy Captain’s Curse” — FAIL

      Sexy Captain’s Curse — Success

      “I’m with Sasuke”— FAIL

I’m with Sasuke —FAIL (still a fail, but I dunno why…)

When inputting “There’s Something about Zaraki”, “I’m with Sasuke” and “Sexy Captain’s Curse” into the search engine it literally tells me: «No results found matching your keyword(s)/phrase. Please expan your search», i. e. it literally tells me that these fics do not exist, adn seeing as they do and they do turnup when using Google, the problem is with the in-site search engine.

Evidently the glitch is that searches that have words in them that have apostrophes, like “I’m”, “there’s”, “life’s” and so on and so forth will not turn up any results because it doesn’t allow for that. Also, it doesn’t allow for words like “with” when double-quoting, because with “I’m with Sasuke” it still wouldn’t come up with the desired result. Again, no such problems from google.

        09/16/2012 at 7:08 am

With Google at least you can make it show results only from I’m going to keep using Google, it seems easier for me.

If you’re going to ruin the search bar at least allow more characters in it. I can’t filter as much as I used to. Sorry if I come off as cross, I don’t mean to rain on your parade, I just really want the old ‘exclude bar’ back.

I am too. I know this is old, but I still don’t like it. The filter out box was all that was needed. Now I still have to put up with like a bajillion OC pairings because there’s always a certain key string of words I have to get rid of (like she/her/xOC)

how do you get search to work at all I am on the fanfiction page and I’m looking for a story and I type it in and I get nothing there is no click button to click on to run the search I have even tried by Author and still the same thing there is no button to click on to run the search on the page

  20. Murgatroyd

    04/28/2013 at 11:57 pm

Now, if only phrase search would actually search for the exact phrase….

Specific example of the problem: I just searched for “the long way” (a phrase that is commonly used in reference to a particular subclass of time travel stories). The search engine did not include the “the” in the phrase, leaving me to slog through every instance of “a long way”.

is it possible to search for stories without a second character?
