Didn’t know there was a problem.

Wondering why hyphens are not allowed in chapter titles. I just wanted to submit a chapter with a hyphenated word and it took the hyphen out and smashed the words together. There is often a legitimate reason to use a hyphenated word in a situation like that. I don’t like having to change my chapter titles just so they comply with this bizarre restriction, but they look bad otherwise.

That was one of the symbols I was wanting to ask to be added into titles. You also can’t use periods or the plus sign, at least in chapter titles. These are actual titles that people have written for.

      Rosario + Vampire
      + Anima
      No. 6
      100% Wolf

I know the reason why they were possibly limited was because the site admins wanted to prevent people from using titles that didn’t break the rules, but the rules for creating titles have changed to allow the use of certain symbols.

Agree with this! Hyphens in chapter titles would be great, especially since there are many English words and even character names in different fandoms that are properly spelled with hyphens.

Oh I so understand this. I didn’t even know there was a problem though so I guess it isn’t as important to me to have to comply with restrictions. But I understand the need to do certain chapter titles a certain way.

What would be even better is if they extended the character limit in titles. Right now you are limited in how long you can make a story title, so I wouldn’t mind seeing them bump the number of characters allowed in a title up a bit to cover slightly longer titles.

You’re right. I was so happy when they extended the limit of characters in the summary. The title limit extending would be a beautiful thing to see.

Seconding this request! I was titling one of my chapters the other day and managed to fit everything except for the very last letter. It was extremely frustrating. And I would definitely be thrilled if we could finally have hyphens in our chapter titles. I’ve spent years wondering why on earth the hyphens don’t show up.

You all understand that long, maundering titles usually equate to long, maundering stories, right? Verbosity is not a virtue. A short, memorable title is much more attractive

What I have done in the past is leave off the last word. It’s klugey and looks bad, but at least it fits and I don’t have to come up with new chapter titles on the fly.

@bienfait – That’s kind of what I was thinking. Younger writers are way to tempted to use longer titles and adding length to the title wouldn’t help the problem of them figuring out less is more. Now, there are a few titles I wish could be longer, like series titles where I have Series Title: Part of Series Title and I’ve had to make adjustments. Still… not good to tempt the younger writers and/or those without enough experience.

Why don’t you learn to make titles that aren’t sentence-long? I have never had this problem. Learn to make a title.

        @Amy –

Writing is never black and white and there are plenty of reasons why a long title can be effective and interesting. Longer titles can be hard to remember and I understand that sites like FF.Net have to set some limitations, but I think it would be great if the current limit was a bit larger.

Some of my titles that the site’s choked on are:
        – ‘An Impossible Thing After Breakfast In The Bottom Of The Garden’ – the story is about Luna Lovegood and the long specific title is about her dreamy but precise nature.
        – ‘Roy Greenhilt And The Mysterious Foreign Exchange Student’ – this title was too long for the site by only a few characters and is meant to parody the Harry Potter stories about foreign exchange students at Hogwarts.
        – ‘Adventures In Necromancer Sitting: 3 Mirtul’ – as a chapter title, this was meant to include date information as well since the story was in epistolary format. Plenty of action stories also like to include date/time as chapter titles to give a story a sense of urgency.

Most of my titles are short, but there are plenty of different reasons why longer titles can be stylistically effective.

A truly ridiculous chapter/story title might take up too much space on people’s screens or cause the site difficulty, but it would be nice if the title length limits got expanded just as the summary length limits have been recently expanded.

Also, hyphens would be good! Brackets, too, can sometimes be used effectively in titles.

@Amy-Most experienced writers, myself included, don’t make overly long titles, we know to catch readers’ eyes, titles need to be short and snappy. That said, some of us have series that we’d like to note in the title that a particular story is a part of that series, like: “Golden Warriors: The Stone King Saga”, or else if the common title theme of a realm is to include some identifier of the fandom like “Indiana Jones & The Curse Of The Crystal Beetle”, you can see where having an extended character count on the title would be helpful. But it’s utterly fantastic that you have never had this problem, rave kudos to you for creating titles that stay within the character limit, I’m sure you’re ever so proud! And I’m sure if you look at the site, you will see that most of us DO “learn to make a title” for our work that fits the character limit and isn’t “a sentence long” (bit of an odd remark there, since sentences can be long or short, but that’s okay). But for slightly longer titles, it would be really nice to have a bit of an extension on the limit, as I’m sure you can understand.

I just wrote a review, but for some reason the message “Type your review for this chapter here.” was at the beginning of the review I wrote, and although I tried to delete it before posting the review, it didn’t work. Usually I can navigate within edit boxes, but this time my screen-reader was having issues, which was part of why I couldn’t correct the glitch or whatever it was. Strangely, this problem navigating in those areas only happened once. If anyone else has had this problem when reviewing, please say so.

Because of this slightly awkward occurrance, I would like to bring up a topic mentioned in a previous blog post. Could it become possible for a user to edit their signed reviews (the reviews they themselves submit, not the ones they receive, just to be clear)? You could have the option in the review history thing, so all we have to do is click a little button next to the submission-date and things, and fix the mistakes we made that we missed when we originally posted it. It would save a lot of embarrassment. We can edit our own forum posts, so this shouldn’t be too difficult to implement.

I checked with some tools in Firefox to see if there was any major problems that would screw up with the review box. There was nothing in the HTML except for obsolete code that was being used. However, Firefox is reporting some Javascript errors, so I don’t know if those would cause the problem that you experienced.

I also agree about people being able to edit their reviews that they left on other people.

All the tweaking up and still no delete option in the outbox.

      09/25/2012 at 1:17 pm

If you look through the other entries the site admins have made you’ll find that they tried creating a delete option in the outbox and that it failed. They couldn’t figure out a way to make it work at this point in time, which means that this is going to be a feature that isn’t going to be easy to program if at all.

    FF Suggested Fixes and Upgrades

    By Keyword in Summary
    By OC (Supernatural)
    New genre – Slash

Currently in the Supernatural archives, it’s very difficult to find stories with OC/OFCs. Likewise, one must browse summaries to find stories that are not slash/Wincest. It would help readers enormously to be able to filter the stories by these two categories to enable them to find the stories they want to read easily.

    Forums – Sort
    – By Create Date
    – By Last Active Date

    Forums – Create
    – indicate how long title fields are!

Currently none of the fields show their length and it’s not until the forum is created that it’s obvious the field has truncated the title.

You already can search via keyword in the summary.

A lot of people have pointed out the fact pretty much any character category needs the OC character added in. Hopefully the admins will eventually add this in, but they’ve got other things they need to do.

While I do think new genre need to be added I don’t agree that slash should be added as a genre. I would rather have a way to exclude characters or a way to pick “undefined/het/slash/none/both” for a pairing selection, undefined being the default for older stories that the writer can’t get to. (There is likely a better word they could use other then undefined.)

I say this because first, the romance genre already makes up about two thirds of most fandoms. Second, there are some people who will tell slash writers that they HAVE to use the slash genre simply because their story contains slash when their story is better categorized as sci-fi and action. (I’ve already had people telling me I should use different character and genre tags as it is.)

Since adding a single entry to a drop down list box is a tiny, tiny, tiny little fix, it seems that the more people request this the better.

A lot of stories have all the characters included in a non-slash situation, since they’re all major characters so I can’t see that excluding characters will do much good in filtering. A separate filter as you’ve suggested would be fine, if the authors used it – which is the same problem as adding Slash to the genre listing. I couldn’t care less how people categories their work, my only desire is the ability to avoid wading through 25 pages of slash fiction summaries to get to the stories I’d actually like to read :S

I don’t put pairings in my summaries, the summary of the story usually takes priority and of the few dozen good OFC stories I’ve found through trawling, those authors didn’t put them in their summaries either.

We’re all entitled to an opinion.

Please help me! I have found a few stories but I can not find many. I am looking for any Bella bashing romance stories, please help me. If you have a story let me know and I don’t care who the characters are, whether they are cross-overs or not.

I would also like to find Elena bashing romance stories, from the Vampire Diaries.

And Sookie Stakehouse bashing romance stories, from True Blood.

I have been searching for days for these stories and I can’t get onto my account to post this. PLEASE HELP ME! I’M DEPERATE!
