Submitting Docs with Images

23 Sep

While doing our regular log sweeps we discovered that some users are using the Document Manager to submit word files with embedded images which can cause the conversion process to fail. Embedding animated GIFs might be spiffy for sharing with friends but our system will not always process them correctly.

So a general rule of thumb is to remove images from your word files before submission and especially if you encounter errors.

Lastly, we have been doing quite a bit of work helping the <0.5% who likes to submit amazingly corrupted Word documents and especially Word 2003 and higher (.docx) files. To help us find the common connection between these users, we would like anyone having problem submitting .docx files to send their original files to our support email with the following info:

  1. Attach the .docx file in question.
  2. What OS are you running? What OS version?
  3. Which Word Processor did you use to create the file? What version of the program? You can find these info by looking for the  “About…” option within the program menus.

With some feedback and luck, we just might be able to help these users out.

When I first read that headline, I thought you were now allowing images in documents. Shew, I can breath a sigh of relief. 🙂

Agreed! We don’t need turning into another devArt!

I kind of did too. Or at least altering the way the cover art is displayed on the site. LOL

Anyways, I do use Word 2007. I haven’t had any problems in uploading my files to the Doc Manager, but I guess I’ll be cautious about this problem.

I have had no problems, which is honestly a miracle since I use three softwares from draft to the Word Doc I upload to FF.N. I write in Scrivener 2.3.1, add Author’s Notes and Shout Outs in Pages, and then export to MS Word for Mac 2011 to upload because Copy and Paste didn’t exist a year ago, and now I have my stuff set up for MS Word docs. Please don’t ever allow images. It’s one of those things like links where it would be cool and really useful for 5% and straight up abused by the other 95%.

I think adding images into your Fanfiction stories is a good idea, not because It’s turning into DevinatART no, but because you can add more details into the character’s apperance or add pictures that has an important event in your story or such.

Either way, yes I think adding images to Document Manager is a good idea so can everyone get the opportunity to see how all these events occures in colours.

You can go to Quizilla for that — I think they allow adding images to FanFiction Stories. I personally prefer the character to imagine what your main character looks like. And besides, adding images might make the screen messy. If you know what I mean…

Oops. I meant that they allow adding images to stories. Sorry, I was typing quickly at the moment, didn’t know what I was saying…

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the writers over at Quizella use pictures as a crutch for their writing and they don’t learn to actually describe things. Covers were good enough.

On top of the fact you may not have read many quizella fanfics it also seems that you aren’t familiar with the concept that a good writer doesn’t need pictures to get their story across. While pictures are a nice addition, they are not needed for a good story and if they are added in to many writers would use it as a crutch. The site admins are also likely talking about images embedded in word document that are shared via the doc-x system, not actual files for posting.

I think adding pictures to a story is a bad idea. If an author could simply use pictures, then he or she might become lazy and rely entirely on these images, instead of taking time to describe things. Plus the pictures would be extremely distracting.

As some people have already stated, I also don’t agree with adding pictures within the stories. I think the imagination can be a really strong thing for when you’re reading a story instead of having a direct picture embedded within it. Some of your readers (the ‘your’ is in general) aren’t – excuse me – stupid when it comes to having an imagination; they aren’t children reading picture books. I know some people struggle with getting that specific image/scene down on paper (I know I do), but I think that’s where the ‘learning in writing’ begins. I’m not saying that you CAN’T have images for your story, but it is better to keep the artwork separate from the written work itself.

Example: I have a story up on FFN. For artwork (such as character designs, ‘event’ images, etc.), I post them on let’s say DeviantArt. I can let people know in an A/N or on my profile that there is complementary artwork for my story posted on DA and people can check that out if they want further reference/information.
I’ve seen people do this for their stories and believe me, that is already effective in that you get the best of both worlds: people who’ve taken an interest in your stories can possibly take an interest in your artwork and vise versa; either way, you get exposure. Of course, you don’t have to use DA as your art-hosting website; you can use whatever site to host your artwork.

Bottom line is: you can do both, just keep the mediums separated from each other. If I want to read the story, I’ll read the story. If I want to look at the artwork, I’ll look at the artwork.

That’s a bad idea. This site is supposed to focus on the writing, which means if all goes well, pictures won’t be necessary.

@Fresh Prince of Akatsuki – no, I’m sorry to have to disagree, but adding images within stories is a terrible idea. This is a writing site. Competent writers paint the story with words.

… and I’ll add that adding pictures in would just become a crutch for the ones that struggle already with their writing skills.

Exactly! 🙂 I love the way you phrased it.

I like the idea of adding images, bit I say this only in the sense of book covers (True I know we already have this at the top of every story in a small box) I just think it would be nice to have a much bigger image of that book cover at the very start of the story in the first chapter, but no other images besides this as it could turn in to DA and that would be to much in my view.

Kind of like Amazon except it’s the actual story instead of a preview? I don’t know, I never thought about that…I’m kind of more partial to the smaller book covers though.

If they make the pictures to large then people can easily snag other people’s cover art without permission.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with what everyone said about not using images in fanfiction. Everyone pretty much said it beautifully.

I know the site can be pretty infamous, but I don’t want it to end up like Quizilla, where everyone is too lazy to describe what’s happening and instead just post an Inuyasha screenshot or something. So I’m glad that feature isn’t supported.

Just keep the image hosting to the avatars and the story covers. I think nothing more needs to be added.

I’ll toss in my support for the “no pictures allowed in a story”, like others have said, a good writer should be able to paint the picture for the reader just by using their words and talent. I have seen a couple of private fanfic websites that allow the writer to post pictures throughout the story and it doesn’t do anything for me, in fact it often looks really cluttered. Plus it’s made even worse if the author has photoshopped or otherwise manipulated the images badly and they wind up looking like an unholy mess.

Yup. If pictures are allowed in stories instead of the author just pointing out where readers can find them, then that could be badly abused and cause hell for some people’s downloads. Most pro novels tend not to mix stories with pictures because the text should stand on its own. I’ve seen some creative works that blended images and words very artistically, but I think they count as exceptions.

I agree with the ‘no pictures’ argument as well. Not only would people toss in ten or eleven pictures and call it a story but I think pictures would slow down the site as well. Especially the mobile site.

    FF Suggested Fixes and Upgrades

    By Keyword in Summary
    By OC (Supernatural)
    New genre – Slash

Currently in the Supernatural archives, it’s very difficult to find stories with OC/OFCs. Likewise, one must browse summaries to find stories that are not slash/Wincest. It would help readers enormously to be able to filter the stories by these two categories to enable them to find the stories they want to read easily.

Currently none of the fields show their length and it’s not until the forum is created that it’s obvious the field has truncated the title.

When you want a profile bio image and you only have access to a mobile device how the heck is one to submit a picture? When your site doesn’t have the right set up to let one do so!!!
