I dont know if this is the right place to make suggestions, but, I think it would be GREAT if fanfiction would add crossover communities.

How many times does it take for a person to be considered to be a “repeat offender” before they get their account permanently banned? I’m curious because I’m dealing with some repeat offenders right now whose stories I reported, and while thankfully they were removed, unfortunately the authors have gone and reposted them. One story I’m reporting has been reposted for the third time. I’ve noted that in the report abuse form but that doesn’t seem to be doing any good.

Is there a new limit to how many times a person can do this before they’re permanently banned? I plan on sending an email because last year that was the best method of dealing with repeat offenders, but since August responses to email reports seemed to have ceased. I’d really like some help with this, and for my emails to be answered.

      01/27/2013 at 12:19 pm

I would just like to add further to my post, now that I’ve seen that a few of these repeat offenders’ accounts have in fact been permanently banned, that the temporary ban that’s on the initial offenses really should be extended. It seems that temporary bans are only about two or three days? That’s nothing. I think it should be at least a solid week, because so many of these people really don’t get it, they’re so downright defiant about it. For the second offense, two weeks. Not to mention the fact that it would be less of a load for people like me who have to deal with new offenders coming in (the One Direction craze out of all the real person violations is still going on and is still the most prolific violation of the rule I’ve ever seen, which is even more ridiculous since these people have actual One Direction fanfiction sites to post on. They have no excuse out of all the real person fiction writers).

      • Anna

        01/27/2013 at 12:53 pm

To add and I ask again: why is it only new stories that get reported within twenty-four hours to a few days of being published that are the only ones getting removed in a timely manner? Even when I report new chapters of older stories (and they are clear rule breakers) they still aren’t getting removed? Is this a glitch or something? There are hundreds of One Direction stories alone besides other real person fiction and various other violators that should’ve been removed months ago that I’ve reported, but apparently not in this time frame where they get removed in a more timely manner.

I think something went wrong perhaps during the update. I just published a new chapter but the pull down icon to select Chapter 2 isn’t showing up. It’s like the story only has the first chapter. Also it appears that my story and all others that have multiple chapters aren’t showing up when you select ‘Just In’ and ‘All Types’. Hope you fix this stuff soon. 🙂

I agree with Anna. I’ve reported one story that has offensive language in the summary that clearly violates the rules and it’s still there. If you’re not going to enforce your TOS than remove them altogether. Need help from the fanfic community, then ask.

    01/15/2013 at 7:14 am

Or they could have a remove review category so that the author of the story can remove it if they wish. Or better yet a random section for the search option in each fandom.

    01/15/2013 at 7:46 am

How about an ability to filter out authors you don’t want to read works of? :s In my fandoms there are too many authors spamming enough as it is and their works weren’t in my tastes at all. It was a bit of pain digging for a fanfiction I would actually wanted to read because of those said authors. I believe that there are people who could use more attentions, more deserving.

Or at least filtering out stories one don’t want to see at all. Either work.

    You know, like fanfiction savior.

But I dunno if anyone agree. :s There might be a possibility for abuse that I didn’t think of…

  17. Jemstar

    01/15/2013 at 4:09 pm

Totally wishful thinking here, but it would be sweet if the site could somehow stop those people that put “summary sucks!” in their summaries. I have no idea how something like that could be implemented but in one of the major fandoms I read in, I counted something like 15 writers who had put “summary sucks but please give it a chance, please R&R!” If someone can’t be bothered to come up with even a simple description of their story like “Bella gets hurt in accident” or “Harry gets a tattoo”, I’m not very interested in reading OR reviewing, even if the story is actually better than the sumamry. Do writers not realize that if they put “summary sucks” in their summary, people are going to pass it over because they figure if the summary sucks, the story must suck, too? A summary is like a commercial for your story, you have that short space to sell your work to readers and it seems really silly that if you put a lot of effort into the story, why not put a little effort into writing a nice summary that will make readers want to check the piece out?

    • yemi hikari

      02/14/2013 at 4:14 am

There isn’t a way to implement it. Plus, why do you want to do away with letting people put those in their summary? It’s typically a good warning to some of the other members of the site to avoid all together. 😀

I don’t think they let us down, but I do wish we knew the reason for the delay. It would be nice to see a blog update telling us when we can expect the actual surprise. I feel like I’m being left in the dark here, wondering when it’s going to happen.

      • Lurker

        01/18/2013 at 3:20 pm

Xing said, ‘IF everything goes well.’ I am assuming that something must have happened during beta testing-that might be a reason for the delay. It also sounded as if the surprise was to be a big function, so it might’ve lot of coding going on. *shrugs*

        That’s just my observation, really.

And whatever happened to my earlier suggestion?

      • Guest

        01/19/2013 at 1:33 am

I’m eager for the surprise, too. I think Lurker hit the nail on the head – they probably ran into some snags during testing, so they’re holding off until everything is fixed.

I’m still curious about the notes feature Xing mentioned last year. I’m hoping that feature might be a way for those of us who like to avoid excessive author’s notes to skip them and get right to the story.

A nice update would be a FILTER OUT option for categories, like genres or even characters. Want to read something with Harry Potter but not Hermoine? Filter her out. Want to read something with Hermioine but not romance? Filter it out.

I think we should be allowed to moderate Signed reviews as well, I’ve noticed since you allow people to moderate Guest reviews there seems to be a rise in signed Flame reviews.

    • yemi hikari

      01/30/2013 at 2:48 am

No please. There are to many writers who would delete any negative review because it hurt their feelings or made their story look bad even if said review was legitimate critique rather then a flame. There is a way to report reviews and while it takes time for the admins to deal with the signed flames this actually helps them keep track of problematic accounts. On top of this the reviews aren’t just for the writer, but the reader as well.

  22. Wispr

    01/16/2013 at 1:19 pm

Be a wonderful surprise if the update once again allows authors to protect themselves from harassing and flaming anonymous reviews. Please stop siding with the internet bullies and their ilk. Please bring back the “Block Anonymous Reviews” choice!

    • Phil

      01/16/2013 at 4:55 pm

You can delete them, or set a setting to moderate them. It’s really not that hard!

      • KageNoNeko

        01/16/2013 at 6:52 pm

That does nothing if someone is harassing someone through anonymous reviews. This point has been debated on in the past.

      • yemi hikari

        01/16/2013 at 6:53 pm

Unless someone has managed to make themselves a target. I know of one person who bragged on their profile about their story having the third most reviews for a small fandom. I myself have been flamed simply because someone was jealous of the number of reviews that I had for one story. One review out of a hundred though isn’t that big of a deal. There are many ways a person can make themselves a target, including their own behavior.

I personally like the new system. I’ve not only gotten less flames since it has been implemented, I’ve gotten less anonymous reviews asking me to update, unless we’re talking a story that hasn’t been updated in awhile. The anonymous reviews I’ve gotten have had a lot more substance. Plus, blocking a person who really wants to flame you won’t stop them. They just have to make a sock puppet account among other things.

      • Wispr

        01/24/2013 at 8:11 am

The so call “Guest Reviews Moderation Feature”, it’s simply a compromise that both helps in relieving Mods of the hassle of having to deal with all the extra flaming now happening due to the removal of the Block Anonymous Reviews feature and helps to ensured the the author still gets harassed. Even though it allows the author to choose to remove the flame before it is posted, which is a bloody good thing, but in the end it’s a compromise that heavily favors the Flamers. I say this simply because unless the author is deleting all anonymous reviews before reading them, they still have to read the anonymous reviews to see which are flames and which aren’t. This allows the Flamers words to still reach their intended victim and with the author deleting said flame before it’s made public, it makes it easy for the people that are against authors having extra protection against flamers to say the author is either exaggerating or outright lying over the number of flames they’re receiving/deleting.

As for the people that are complaining that they can’t review due to the “Block Anonymous Reviews” feature, I do feel bad for them, I’ve been in the same boat myself, but there will always be a few that slip through the cracks. And I truthfully believe that the majority of the ones complaining, are wanting the featured remove for more malicious reasons. Before I explain my remark I want to stress that I am not lumping all the people that wanted the ability of the fan fiction author to protect themselves from flamers remove as being flamers or such. No I seriously believe there are people with legitimate grounds for either not wanting to or being able to register for various reasons. But I firmly believe these are few and far between and I say this because of how my own outlook on visiting a fan fiction site that has similar features to blocking anonymous reviews. I go in with the attitude that I’m a visitor and thus it falls on me to both respect and honor that sites rules. Especially respect the authors wish for that extra level of protection from harassment. So I feel that a large number of the ones that are complaining over not being able to anonymously review are simply wanting to be highly disrespectful to the authors… in essence they want to flame.

I really wish Fanfiction Net would explain way they now stands strongly behind giving anonymous reviewers the ability to harassment, no matter the cost to all the authors who used the Block feature for protection that they rightfully needed. It’s truly horrible to see a site that was one, if not the safest place to post become something akin to a haven for flamers.

@Whispr: For once I think Yemi is right, maybe you need to investigate why you are the target of flamers and harassers. My own experience with flamers (I’ve had a few hit me) is that they don’t usually go after an author unless that author has committed something the flamer finds offensive. It could be anything from poor writing technique to extreme OOC-ness to troll-ficcing. Or it could be the way that the author is responding to constructive criticism…if someone responds with a chapter length rant to a reviewer who points out a simple spelling error, they then open themselves up to flamers because a-HA! the flamers see that they can bait the writer into such hysterical reactions.

Personally I prefer the current system over the old one. I’ve never had anon reviews blocked because I knew I had readers that didn’t have/want accounts to leave reviews and I didn’t want to discourage them from sharing their thoughts with me. I can easily enable the moderate reviews feature if needed. And I can understand how upsetting it is to have to read flames, but I figure that flames are a chance I take when publishing my work on a site that allows reader feedback, plus I’m thick-skinned enough that I know the opinions of flamers don’t really matter, it’s most likely someone just being a jerk and why should I care what a jerk thinks of my work? And while I’m sure that I will be told how very wrong my opinion is, I suspect maybe the reason the site administrators enacted this type or review system is to place more responsibility on the author for the product they are posting, figuring that if a writer doesn’t want flames, they’ll then clean up their act. I’m in NO WAY saying that’s what’s going on in your case and I mean no offense towards you in anything I have said, I’m just sharing a basic opinion.

(my penname for fictionpress is Yuuenchi) A couple of suggestions, or concerns really, for the forums: as it stands, it iis (nearly) impossible to reply directly to another member’s forum post, such that the other member knows you are replying to them unless you directly address them. Other forums allow you to either reply to a thread, or reply to a poster, ad your reply will reflect that. i.e. “in reply to….” , or to quote from a post, and your reply wil lreflect that: “member_x wrote…”

Also, the quote feature is quite cumbersome to use, and diffcult to manipulate. I have to highlight the text in the thread I want to reply to, place it, and click the ‘quote’ icon, but I can’t easily stop quoting, without highlighting the text I don’t want in the quote and then click it again. Also, it’s difficult to edit around the quote, I can’t place my cursor before the quote and write anything without it being sucked into the quote itself. Surely there’s a better way to work with quotes.

    01/16/2013 at 7:02 pm

@ KageNoNeko – In which case I suggest figuring out how come the person is targeting you and keeping a log of the anonymous reviews that come in. Each review whether it is signed or anonymous has an identification number. Once you’ve gotten a list, send it in to the site admins. Truth of the matter is, if you’ve caught the attention of someone to the point they’ll harass you constantly via anonymous reviews, they’re likely to also create sock puppet accounts. Signed flames take longer to delete and if you block them they can easily just create another account.

    • Lord Kelvin

      01/17/2013 at 1:03 pm

The idea behind blocking anon reviews is that you have a choice to reject them altogether. FFN took that choice away and now you must tinker with each individual anon review if you want to get rid of them. That’s a time sink that used to be absent.

On an unrelated note, I miss the ‘my forums’ link on top of a person’s profile. FFN used to have them before the forum purge. It was a lot more convenient to just use that link as opposed to rummaging in the ranking list or doing a site search.

I kinda want the feature where you can see how many characters you’ve typed in a review and how many more characters you can type back. It was helpful, especially if I’m leaving big reviews.

        01/18/2013 at 1:15 am

I didn’t realize FP placed a limit on the length of a review. But, yeah. Actually I’d like to see them implement a minimum character requirement for reviews, as in a review must be more than 6 words

    • Anna

      01/18/2013 at 1:09 pm

I agree with this, I’d forgotten about this detail because I used to submit long reviews too, but coincidentally when the new review box was implemented I’d stopped doing so for a while. But if I did decide to write a review that ended up on the more lengthy side it’d be very beneficial to know how many characters I had left.

      • Lynn Hollander

        01/18/2013 at 6:03 pm

Yes, the character count was very helpful I also miss the separate window/tab for the review box. It controlled the scrolling problem when the review contained many citations from the text. A separate font for quoted material would be appreciated too.

Hi, I have a question (no idea where to post it) that I was hoping someone could answer for me—preferably some one from the site or someone who has been on it for a long time.

I’m planning on posting a story soon and was going to have my first chapter be sort of like a movie preview, with bits of the story taken out and pieced together so when the reader reads it feels like they are at the theater and seeing the preview, however in the rules I’ve seen that previews are not content that is allowed. But I have seen several stories that have these types of movie previews even a couple who consist of only movie previews.

What should I do. I really want to post this preview but since the story will have many chapters as well I would hate for it all to be removed by the site just because of the preview.

Are movie previews allowed or not?

    01/19/2013 at 8:28 pm

I wanted to make a suggestion/comment, but didn’t really know where to do that at, so I’m doing it here.

The summary character limit is so frustrating! It’s very difficult sometimes to create a well written and interesting summary with so few characters. My summaries are either too vague or really choppy because of how I have to word them to make it fit in the summary box. Could you bump up the limit to something a little higher? 1,000 would be great, but even 500 would be better.

    • Lurker

      01/19/2013 at 8:42 pm

I am voting no to the suggestion. It was easy to me to have a short, simple, yet attention-pulling summary. The point is to capture your audience’s attention and make them want to read what contained inside. And honestly, longer summaries would be an eyesore for me, and would push up rooms per page.

Basically, longer the summary is, less likely the said audience would be interested. Sometime simplicity is the best way to go about it.

I cannot think any better explanation so I do apologize for the less-than-understandable reasoning.

Isn’t enough that we now already got increased length last September though?

      • jnl94

        01/19/2013 at 8:47 pm

I do actually understand your reasoning, but I’ve had many people tell me my summary seemed too vague, but I couldn’t make it any other way with the characters allowed. I mean, I’ll live with the amount we have and I’m not going to throw a big stink over what I have. It was just a little suggestion and nothing life changing. I’ll manage. 😉

      • Lurker

        01/19/2013 at 8:52 pm

Ah, sorry. If I seemed hostile, eh! I am sorry for that, hahah.

Well, let’s put it this way, vagueness can be good. 🙂 Use that to your advantage and pull people’s attention to your stories.

I can understand how you feel about it though, haha, since I sometime have folks telling me my summaries are vague or too ‘mismatched’ (up until they got what the summary really meant). I also noticed that it tended to help that they at least checked the story out and decide for themselves.

Just try playing with your words. It helps more than you think. 😀

      • Guest

        01/20/2013 at 10:47 am

I want to second Lurker’s suggestion — try playing with the words. Working at drafting a short, concise summary has really helped me with my overall word choices in my stories, too. It forces me to use my imagination, more action-oriented verbs (versus passive tenses) and to get to the point. It’s a skill that’s worth honing. 🙂

Personally, I miss the old limit. When I see some of the long, rambling summaries, it scares me off reading the stories.

They already increased the word limit a few months ago, and personally I’m happy with the word limit the way it is.

Sometimes it helps to pull an attention-grabbing quote from your story and use that as your summary. Maybe you could give that a try?

The ‘summary’ is badly named. It is actually a blurb, a back cover ad, that snares the reader’s attention as she stands in the check out line or glances over the new book section. Calling it a summary confuses the issue.
Treat it is as a short piece of ad copy designed to make the reader click on the story. You don’t need to describe the whole plot or name all the characters, you need to get the reader to begin reading the first page. Christine offers good advice about the quote.

Thanks everyone. And Lurker, you didn’t sound hostile at all so don’t worry. I think, most of the time, I can pull off pretty good summaries, but there are the odd ones that just don’t sound right. I’m working on that. Thanks again for not all jumping down my throat, like some people might. 😀

@ Lynn – It’s not badly named though. I guess the best way to put it is all those things that you listed are just another name for the same thing. But thinking about it as if you were writing a summary for a novel is a great piece of advice.

I don’t know if this is a site-wide thing, but the fonts in Doc Manager suddenly shrank, and it’s a bit of an eyesore to go through and edit now.

Anyone having problems with the display loading in firefox? Just yesterday, after updating firefox to 18.0.1, the display was looking normal at first, but later yesterday I have no user pictures loading, I can’t change the font size/style/background color, etc. The site works fine on internet explorer and on my mobile.

I don’t know how the ads are selected, but I would really like the pornographic-looking ones to stop showing up. I really don’t like clicking on my user page and getting an ad that says “one click for a Roman orgy.” There’s plenty of mature-type content on the site, but not all of us read those.

How about you get a freaking MA section and stop bitching about stories being too mature. If a parent isn’t monitoring their kid that’s their problem. Most on FFN are like 16 and up yet you people treat your account holders like crap & don’t listen to what we say unless it’s to report someone like the loser on here named Anna who’s “dealing with repeat offenders” get real. Did you ever stop to realize some people report people just because they don’t like them or are mad how a story is going, but you never contact the “offending” party to give them a chance to explain or change things. Just get MA & make it so you have to login and/or agree you are 18 or older & stop being such pussies because a parent caught their snotty 10 year old reading something they didn’t like.

Where did say I was complaining about your precious MA rated smut? I don’t give a flying hoot about them. My concern is with people who post original fiction that could so easily go on FictionPress instead of clogging up the Misc. categories as well as real person fiction (which is also original fiction) clogging up not only the Misc. categories, but even more ridiculously being posted into specific categories that they have even less relevance in. I have tried to “contact” these people, and they don’t appreciate my advice (no matter how sensitive I was in my approach), judging from the fact they outright ignore me or send me messages filled with bratty responses, cursing, and even pathetic physical threats. I no longer have to contact them anymore, apparently, that they have to follow the rules. The One Direction and Justin Bieber authors especially have no right to be doing what they’re doing since there’s already multiple sites dedicated to them they could post on. They sure wouldn’t like it if people started abusing *their* sites, now would they?

Calling names certainly doesn’t help the case for you people who have such a hard time with this MA deal anyway. Why should the site admins reward you for your childish behavior? Most stories that have MA rated content in them could go on AdultFanfiction.

      Get real yourself.

I wish people would stop transferring the blame for knowingly writing and posting Ma content to a section that is clearly for the M rating on anyone but themselves. If your mature enough to write Ma content then surely you should be mature enough to obey a sites rules and post it to another site, right?

It also doesn’t matter how old the members of this site are. Most people going into the 16+ category are expecting material that is 16+ and not stuff that is 18+ no matter what age they are. On top of this a parent shouldn’t have to worry about their sixteen year old finding something that is 18+ on a site that doesn’t allow it, nor should the parents who let their kids under sixteen read the M rating because they are mature enough.

I have reported a SIGNED reviews that are not related to the ‘reviewed’ story at all – they are very vulgar, disgusting PORN “stories”. I reported them several times. I know the the author and several other people reported them as well. More than 3 months later, they are still there.

Are mods even reading the messages where someone reports a signed review?

    • yemi hikari

      01/30/2013 at 3:11 am

At least it hasn’t been two or more years until the reviews were removed. That’s the way it was before they had the report system in place.

My email alerts are not coming through, its activated on the website, but I’ve seen stories updated days ago but i never got an update alert. I’ve checked the website and they are on my alert list and are dated before the story was updated. It happened with a few stories and chapters. I’m missing lots of update alerts. Please can this be fixed asap. Thank You.

Please ignore and delete my first message about email alerts, its working now, so much that all the alerts that i was missing have come back. It must of been my email account. But it was just weird as it was only missing the emails from here and everything else came through. Random.

I totally agree with Hailey comment, would be great if there was crossover communities.
Especially if there is more than one categories topic example in Books and TV Shows or Books and Movies. Even though they are in two separate sections Books and TV Shows they are linked because the story was taken from the book to make the TV Show/Movie. It would be nice to allow a community to allow stories from both sections to be in one community.

I’m having the logo problem as well. Maybe it has to do with the adblocker on Firefox or something. Either way it’s annoying for someone who’s used to seeing the funky little logo.

I want to say a suggestion. Can you guys add like ‘edit profile page’. Where we can change our profile’s font and color. And also change the background design with jpg or png files, or use a default color (like wattpad). It’s kind of plain viewing someone’s profile with just grey tone everywhere, it makes it looks pretty dull.

      01/29/2013 at 8:45 pm

No thanks. :/ That’d be more of an eyesore than having it plain. Imagine someone abusing rainbow fonts…Yeah, no vote from me.

Seconded. The site got rid of the option for making the font in the stories any color and font you wanted for a reason.
