New Chapters Missing Issue Fixed

10 Feb

We have resolved an issue which affected the site for the past day where new chapters can sometimes appear to be hidden and readers can encounter random chapter not found errors.

Error was caused by an obscure bug introduced by new code introduced in our daily code pushes and we apologize for any inconvenience as result of this.

I’m having a problem on and I wonder if there is any way to talk to the adm site.

I know this is no place for this, but I do not know where else to look.

There’s a girl (another writer) causing me embarrassment and I’m afraid of being harmed (deleted or something) since, for a similar case of deception, a writer friend I know has suffered penalties.

    Thank you in advance.

When you say that the other girl is causing you embarrassment are you meaning that they are harassing you or are you embarrassed because this person left a legitimate critique on your story and/or called you out for breaking the site rules? If it is the first then block the person as soon as possible and dig through your e-mails to get the review identification numbers and/or PM identification numbers of everything she’s sent your way.

If it is the second then I suggest getting used to the idea of having your mistakes pointed out as you posted your story in a public archive. If your story does in fact break the rules then the only way to prevent your story/stories from being deleted is to fix your story so they are rule compliant. If your friend had her story or account deleted it was because she broke the site rules and it falls on her shoulders and her shoulders alone for losing her account.

In fact, there is none of the two cases.

The fact is that I put a translation in FF.Net since 2009 and another writer decided to post the same translation I recently. I felt offended and went to have a talk nice to her, so she understood that it was a lack of respect. But she began sending offensive comments on my reviews. I do university and am busy, so I had no time to respond or bloquer or anything, and when I saw she had me bloquequeado and kept accusing me of having no right to complain. I felt offended and embarrassed and I was afraid she would do something that would harm me. (I still have that fear) So come and seek opinions or trying to talk to adm.

I acess today, after I arrived from a trip and learned that the “campaign” writers did a friends to support me must have paid off because the girl had posted the same translation that I was no longer publishing his version.

I think the problem may have been solved, I do not know. I hope so.

I can handle constructive criticism and comments and my stories are within the site rules, do not worry. I guess I was a little too nervous about the situation and I’m sorry bother coming. Thank you for the suggestions!

I think everything has been resolved now.

How about introducing a new filter option to communities that allow users the option to view stories by fandom. My community has over a thousand stories and it would make things such easier if I were able see how many stories each fandom in my community has so I may make an attempt to keep the numbers even, it can also come in handy when visiting other people’s communities since users would be able to immediately see the fandoms they are most interested in when visiting general or x-overs communities.

    02/10/2013 at 3:50 pm

Why hasn’t this review been removed yet? I’ve reported it daily for the past month and several times before that and still this review is up!

Here’s the review I was given: (If you can call it a review!)

So lets see, spam, a death threat and a (misspelled) curse. This goes past critical/harsh reviews so I don’t see how this is still up! This has been up since the 7th July LAST YEAR, so surely at least ONE admin would have seen these abuse reports by now!

And by correcting others work, I gave spelling hints to two authors (Not the same person from above) of the same fandom and a while later I get this review on one of my stories.

I know it’s unlikely I’d get a response from any admins here so I posted this here for readers of the blog to give me feedback. Was I right or wrong to keep reporting this? Should I stop reporting? Was this reviewer okay?

    • yemi hikari

      02/10/2013 at 4:13 pm

I just reported the review as containing offensive phrases and for being spam as it has nothing to do with the story. Apparently though its been taking them time to get through the reports on the review. I have one from a troll who hit me twice after I reviewed 1D fanfics telling them they were not allowed on the site.

      • ~Cherry!~

        02/10/2013 at 4:21 pm

        Thank you for helping!
Mmm, just because I gave someone ConCrit someone else feels the need to flame. +Sigh+
Read past posts on this blog. I just hope it doesn’t take two years to get a reply like someone else did!
Did you manage to get the messages deleted?

      • Phil

        02/10/2013 at 4:34 pm

The admins probably have thousands upon thousands of these things stocked up, and most likely get hundreds more everyday. The site has millions of users and people probably send in these abuse reports like crazy.

It’s no doubt a challenging and time-consuming process to respond to these messages and keep up with the flow of them. We have no idea how many people attend to these reports. If there’s only a handful of people to deal with complaints, then not much progress is going to be made.

Then you have to sort through and determine which reports are actually valid. I guarantee users who can’t take negativity or are just little whiners report others without an actual reason, just fudging it as they go along. The requests have to be verified before anything’s actually done, or they risk harming a rule following user.

Basically, for a site that runs without charge, they’re doing the best they can in my opinion. What with all the updates and bugs they still need to sort out, they can only spend so much time on abuse reports.

      • yemi hikari

        02/10/2013 at 6:45 pm

@ Cherry ~ I think I was the one who brought up the fact it took two years for the flames I got from someone to be removed and that was before the report abuse was implemented on the reviews. I brought it up because people were complaining that they reported a review and a month later it hadn’t been removed. I haven’t gotten the message deleted yet, but then again I would rather yours got deleted first as mine is newer then yours. 😀

@ Phil ~ I’ve actually come to expect a slow turn around on stuff I report despite the fact I do expect it to eventually be removed. Sometimes they’re quicker, but every so often they switch gears towards a major update. Then they focus on rule breaking stuff again. That’s the way it seems to me.

Can I make the suggestion that the site allows non-anonymous reviews to be screened and approved just like anonymous ones? My fandom has a few very persistent trolls (or one troll with lots of accounts) and the fact that their worthless (and occassionally very racist and offensive) messages can’t simply be deleted just because they’ve made an account is very frustrating. Abuse reports seem to accomplish nothing, probably because the admins are swamped with reports both genuine and from users who think a negative opinion on their story counts as abuse. Not to mention, that sort of troll will just keep making accounts until their IP address is blocked.

Just think of the time it would save all around if spam/trolling messages could just be deleted with a click.

As for the users who simply can’t handle critique…well they will still be reading the message even if they don’t approve it, won’t they?

    • nowistand

      02/10/2013 at 10:59 pm

I don’t agree with this. It still allows Little Flower Child to make sure that no negative reviews are on their Most Amazing Piece of Crap Ever’s review wall. Honestly, I don’t monitor even my Anon reviews ’cause flames just pad my review count. And for critiques, I take and work on what I feel the Reviewer has actually addressed that I feel needs work on.

I say no to any way of deleting signed reviews. Anonymous… I don’t care.

      • Generic User Name

        02/11/2013 at 1:59 pm

Yes but Little Flower Child will not listen to the “nasty mean people” who leave constructive, useful critcism anyway. And I find one decent review to be better than a hundred flames/UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE messages. It’s like Facebook friends – you can talk about having a lot of them but very few are actually your friends.

*shrug* I just think it’s something that should be put under consideration.

@Generic User Name: this suggestion has been raised several times in different threads. I don’t think it will happen; it would simply encourage some writers to remove all concrit, and effectively would render the review process completely useless. It would also be unfair to those readers – and there are many of them – who rely on fair and impartial, and sometimes critical, reviews to help them decide whether a story is likely to be enjoyable for them.

Most rational users will see a troll review for what it is, and pass it by.

      • Shawnesty

        02/11/2013 at 2:00 am

Definitely agree that it would render the review process useless, so I’m against the ability to delete signed reviews. I’ve seen rampant cases in my fandoms where Special Little Snowflakes cannot handle even someone pointing out spelling mistakes in their work and pitch ungodly fits because someone DARED honestly critique their worthless crap story. I’m not talking flames, I’m talking comments like “You’ve got some good ideas in this, but I think you could strengthen your plot by doing ‘x'” or “Your story is great, but you could benefit from a beta reader, some of the typographical errors are distracting.” I’ve even seen Special Little Snowflakes delete the story to rid it of the constructive criticism reviews and repost it with whiny rants about how mean people are to their poor little selves and why doesn’t the world see their absolute genius of a fic for the treasure it really is? And really, what’s the point of taking your time to leave an insightful and hopefully helpful review to someone when they’re going to delete it if you haven’t blindly praised them with “thiz iz grate, plese rite moar, uppdayte sooooooon!” And for the record, I’ve got my share of concrit on my stories and I’ve even got a nasty and meanspirited flame from a former friend who was angry with me, so she decided to vent her anger in a publically personal attack. It made me mad, sure, but I didn’t even report it for abuse, I figured it was smarter to let her show her true colors and allow people to see what kind of vicious person she really was that she would stoop to such an attack.

      • yemi hikari

        02/11/2013 at 3:35 am

“Most rational users will see a troll review for what it is, and pass it by.”

I’m going to add that it is best to ignore and block trolls when you see them. Don’t even dignify them with a response. They’ll typically get bored and move on unless the troll is doing it for revenge and then they’ll be dealt with very harshly when the site admins get around to their accounts.

      • A. Good One

        02/11/2013 at 9:11 am

I have to agree that it would be a bad idea to allow writers to remove or moderate signed reviews, for all the reasons already given and for one more. Some of these little snowflakes like to exaggerate and tell outight lies about the reviews they get, and we reviewers can’t defend ourselves if those reviews are removed. For example, a reviewer may say “You’re not allowed to post this story about real people”, but Snowflake will cry that the review called her names and threatened her life. Leaving the reviews up is proof of the truth and protects the reviewers.

      • Generic User Name

        02/11/2013 at 2:05 pm

I don’t understand the need for people to try and force useful criticism on those who aren’t mature enough to accept it for what is it. As I’ve mentioned up thread people who are likely to delete concrit will just ignore it anyway.

Also, there is no such thing as an impartial review; everyone is biased in one way or another.

      • yemi hikari

        02/12/2013 at 12:29 am

If a person is not mature enough to accept criticism then they shouldn’t be publishing their stories in a public place in the first place. The site guidelines that they’re supposed to read before they even publish their stories even says that not all reviews will praise the work. And yet they expect us to bend over backwards and only gush praise over their darling little stories because they don’t want their feelings hurt.

    • Alaverat

      02/11/2013 at 10:35 am

It seems like a cure that is worse than the disease. Most readers are capable of ignoring personal attacks, semi-literate rants and general non-review reviews. There are some silly authors who think a comment on their story that isn’t fawning is an attack, and while most of us know better, those authors will just wipe out everything that isn’t gush.
That’s a very bad example for young readers and beginning writers.

      • Generic User Name

        02/11/2013 at 2:08 pm

“There are some silly authors who think a comment on their story that isn’t fawning is an attack, and while most of us know better, those authors will just wipe out everything that isn’t gush.”

Yes but why is it so important to force critique on these people when they don’t want it and won’t take it on board anyway?

      • favonilla

        02/11/2013 at 2:46 pm

It’s important, because the reviews aren’t just for the benefit of the writer. They also help readers and other writers. I often have a look at the reviews of a story I’m reading, looking for constructive analysis which I can apply to my own work. I also check them first if the summary has given me reason to suspect it’s a Mary Sue or real person fic trying to sneak under the radar. Why should the writer of the story be the only person whose entitlements are considered?

Besides, it’s a question of honesty. If you are going to put a story in the public eye, it’s deceitful to try to suppress public opinion.

It’s also troubling in a broader sense; if a young person can’t learn to take constructive criticism, what kind of adult is s/he going to grow into? And if a grown person (there are some) can’t cope with being given advice on improving their work, what possible hope do they have for surviving in the real world?

      • Alaverat

        02/11/2013 at 3:17 pm

Generic User Name: An edited review page isn’t real. Keep fiction in the story.

Young writers who read slanted reviews, reviews that say only: ‘loved the chapter’ (or more likely: luvd chpter), may feel inadequate or picked on when a real reviewer says: “I thought X’s name was Jones back in chapter one. In chapter one+N it’s X Johnston. What happened?”

A culled review page also inhibits beginning reviewers. “I can’t say _that_, even though it’s true. Writer X will be uncomfortable.” And from being unable to say criticism, it’s a short jump to being unable to analyze anything: ‘This is a story, so it must be good.’ –all right. that’s a little extreme, but critical thinking, even about a friend’s work, should be encouraged.

And if the author doesn’t want reviews, she shouldn’t go to the review page.

      • yemi hikari

        02/12/2013 at 12:35 am

Deleting reviews that give legit criticism is a form of censorship. Also, if someone doesn’t want to handle criticism in a mature manner they aren’t ready to be posting on the net. Doesn’t matter if they’re old enough to have an account either. It’s no different from any other site on the web in that regard. You may be old enough, but if you aren’t mature enough you do not need.

    • Generic User Name

      02/11/2013 at 2:30 pm

After leaving my original comment and receiving the replies, I have actually carefully re-thought my stance on this. I don’t want signed-in reviews to be moderated. I–and I suppose a lot of other people–want improvements made to the reporting system so that measures such as I suggested aren’t necessary in the first place.

      • yemi hikari

        02/12/2013 at 12:35 am

A lot of us are hoping that the surprise includes an update to the report system actually.

      • Paul

        02/19/2013 at 3:15 pm

That’s too bad. I actually agreed with your original standpoint. I see no problem with deleting signed reviews if it makes the reader more comfortable. For anyone who disagrees, then you still have the choice NOT to delete your reviews. Having more free will, more rights, and more freedom are not something that should be frowned upon. It always bothers me that ffnet is more concerned with its readers than with its writers. This site should be a safe haven for writers. Instead, it is constantly babying its readers. That’s where all the abuse stems from. Readers become trolls and I have yet to see a review that was actually a helpful critique. Afterall, the site is mostly filled with children.

      • yemi hikari

        03/01/2013 at 12:22 am

@ Paul – I think you meant that you see no problem with deleting signed reviews so long as it makes the writer more comfortable. That said, what you’re talking about isn’t about making the site a safe haven for writers, you’re talking about making the site a safe haven for people who don’t want their “perfect little world” they’ve created for themselves burst because someone dared to tell them the truth. Being able to delete any review including the anonymous ones isn’t a right, it is a privilege. While deleting a flame or a spam review is within a persons rights, deleting critique infringes upon another persons right to free speech.

That also said, I find it hard to believe that you’ve not been able to find any review that has helpful critique. Perhaps you’ve had bad luck, but truth be told I am more under the impression that you’ll label any review you don’t like as being unhelpful because it is advice you don’t want to hear and/or it is written for a story you like and don’t think should be criticized simply because you like it. I mean, you did spout off nonsense of having more rights, when as I’ve said deleting reviews isn’t a right, but freedom of speech is.

My new stories are still not being allowed, though my updates went through fine. The new story will let me move through the process until I submit it. Once I do that the page will freeze, loosing all coloration except the side bar links (in black) which are missing their chart/grid except for the page divider and a bit of script across the top in a yellow field box (The text: Follow our official blog at and our Twitter @fictionpress for the latest site news and status updates.). The rest of the page is completely blank. Once I reach this point there is nothing left to do but close the tab or click on a different bookmark. The story never comes into being.

I’m going to ask if your stories aren’t showing up on your profile or if they aren’t showing up under your manage stories tab at all. If it is the first then it can take a bit of time before the new story will show up. If it is the second page try using a different web browser. I also suggest doing a virus scan as well.

I’m actually not an admin. I’m just giving you a few ideas until they can fix the problem if there is one. The only other things I can think of that may be effecting it is computer age, defrag issues and making sure you have the latest version of the web browsers and or operating system, or a newer one. It also doesn’t hurt to run a defrag, so try that.

The same thing is happening to me that two other commenters stated. I can’t post new stories. I get the same page Ree described.

Has anyone else noticed that the ad-blocker needs refreshing more frequently than every 24 hours?

Like once in the morning and once in the evening — about 10 hours apart.

I tend not to use ad blocker, so I can’t help you here.

Hate to tell you this sport, but your story is in violation of the “no script” format rule on the site. Might want to fix that before advertising your work on the site blog (which I don’t think you’re supposed to do, nor are you supposed to leave reviews like Sha Coop did, but hey, that’s okay). You also might get a beta to help catch the mistakes.

I didn’t have this issue. They need to just do their jobs and keep the site running properly and adress issues that we have and treat us better.
