Characters, Search, Site Theme, and Lots more…

20 Mar

[UPDATE: Please see new blog post for compatibility update with list of resolved and pending issues. ]

Search engine is now 4 character aware and users can filter through all of them one by one. Please note the browsing part with four character support is coming soon.

We have also pushed out a major revision of the site theme but also  expect some growing pains as result. Please let us know of any place that is exhibiting unexpected behavior. Refinement of the new theme will slowly roll out over the next few weeks and we want your feedback.

If the changes reduced your font size to unacceptable small or large levels, you need to  provide us with the browser version, device os, and screen resolution so we can upgrade the theme to be compatible with all device types. Compatibility is extremely difficult but we usually get it right after initial feedback.

For the story settings we want to clarify that the ordering of the 4 characters is irrelevant to the search engine and the upcoming browsing enhancements. All four characters are equally weighted.

  • Search engine now able to filter through 4 characters
  • Site theme updated with mostly subtle changes.

  • Tons of small fixes and too many to list.

Pending issues with fix coming:

I’m not really sure why you changed the font at all…. its far too big, I liked the smaller verdana font, and just for the record reading with that font on an iPad mini is awful! i tend to read using the dark choice (black background white text) as i find it easier on the eyes… and I don’t know if its just me, but it seems lighter than before (I use all my devices with the brightness turned down as low as they will go)…. like you have clicked the ‘turn off the lights’ button that some video websites have…. a nice addition to go along with the 4 character support would be the choice to search by the amount of chapters a story has too i would love that feature!!

i have already tried the other choices, but other than that loving all the new updates been on the site since 2006 and its come along in leeps and bounds since then!

for the record my devices i use for fanfiction are…
ipad mini using the safari browser that comes with ios 6.1.2
apple Macbook using firefox browser 19.0.2

    Holy Eye-strain Batman!

You know there’s a reason books are written in a serif font. it’s to help prevent eye-strain. the eye can focus on one line at a time since the serifs work to form an invisible line that your eye can follow. Also, without the serifs, lines seem to blend together. Which might be the reason for the spacing complaints.

While I like that there’s a change to add more characters to search parameters, I don’t see how changing the font and everything else improves the site. Especially when we can no longer change the font to suit our own preferences.

I do understand that you’re changing the style of the site, I know you want to keep it fresh and new. I will comment, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. It seems like this is a case of “it’s gotta a crack. Let’s replace the whole thing!” kinda deal. Though I hope it isn’t.

The new style is definitely harder to deal with, I used to be able to go to the story traffic stats and see which stories got the most views and the least by putting them in order (ascending/decending) Also the new style is way too bland and is hard on the eyes.

    03/20/2013 at 1:36 pm

Well I usually don’t make a comment here because most of the changes I was able to deal with but this last one is just horrible. Why did you change the layout. It looks aweful and is hard to read. Yes sure you can change the font, etc But it is not working and none of the fonts are the old one which is the one I liked or at least I can’t change the spacing to the old way. It was easy to read the old way now it is just so big even if I make it smaller the spacing is off. Can’t we go back to the old layout or at least give us the ooption to change the skin to the old layout? Why did you change it? Of all the things to improve you had to change something that didn’t need fixing. I know improvements are supposed to be a good thing but sometimes things don’t need to be improved.

The font is too big for me. It’s better for reading. But when you’re looking for a story, the font makes everything seem so.. ugh.

One thing I’d like to see on FFN, is a jump bar, you can do it on story chapters, but what about through the story archive? I mean I’d like to be able to go from page 3 of stories, to like…50! I can’t really find a story that I haven’t read, and going page by page takes really long, really the only stories that get read often, are the beginning and ending stories, the ones in the middle don’t get much love….

    • rainlily13

      03/20/2013 at 1:58 pm

@ Deathly Jester: I’d actually like that idea, having a jump to feature. You can manually jump to say, page 50 of an archive by fiddling with url if you want to do that right now though. The second to last number in it is for the page numbers, so just changing that would take you to whatever page you want.

Here, for example: ( The 4 right near the end? Just change the page to whatever number you want to in whatever particular archive you’re perusing. Hope that helps!

I don’t understand why you keep doing this, fanfiction team. A new font, AGAIN?
It is a change not needed, nor wanted by the people. We already had this problem a few months back, and everyone agreed that Verdana was the best default font. But now, one minute into the site and I already had to come here to complain, AGAIN!
I love the site and I use it every single day, but this font is very hard on my eyes and not pleasant at all. PLEASE CHANGE BACK. Verdana was way much better!
Also, because of the starin in my eyes, I always read the stories with the dark background. But when I click the “story contrst” button now, the space where is the picture and the summary of the story changes together with the background, when it was supposed to be white! Please, fix this problem, it bothers me when I’m reading :/
Stop changing what doesn’t need to be changed, guys. And for god’s sake, LET THE FONT ALONE ALREADY!
Thank you very much for your hard work anyway, guys. I LOVE ALL OF YOU 🙂

can you please change the font back to the way it was the font is hard on the eyes or at least gives the choice to change to the new version if we want or keep the old one.

This is terrible. Small font strains my eyes and the next size up belongs is a child’s book. I use Google Chrome. Please stop trying to ‘improve’ things that work perfectly fine. It’s bad enough that I have to adblock every single one of those ‘cover images’.

  10. radioshack

    03/20/2013 at 2:03 pm

I do not use font smoothing/anti-aliasing on my computer or in my browser because the blurring effect on the edges of text that those features cause gives me a headache. The new font (the one on the homepage and story-browsing pages) looks choppy and half-bolded when viewed raw–that is, without font smoothing–and is headache-inducing with font smoothing.

For a picture of what I’m talking about, see here:

Make sure you’re zoomed to 100%, not whatever your browser scales the picture to originally, or it will just look fuzzy.

The text of the stories themselves does seem readable, if I change the font to Arial and tweak the size a bit.

It would be very helpful if the main page font were something more eye-friendly, though. The old font looked great and was perfectly readable. The new one isn’t.

I’m mostly fine with the new look-and-feel, but the Story Stats page grinds Firefox 17.0.4 ESR to a halt on Windows 7 64-bit, with certain shapes incrementally widening when the page just sits there. Each time they widen (every two to three seconds), the error console reports:

Error in parsing value for ‘stroke-dasharray’. Declaration dropped.
Error in parsing value for ‘shape-rendering’. Declaration dropped.

I’m using the iPad first generation and the browser safari on it but the font size is way to big for the drop down menus and even the story summaries.

  13. rainlily13

    03/20/2013 at 2:21 pm

I actually love the new changes. New and fresh. Just a matter of getting used to it. Don’t really see the big deal, but I guess that’s just me haha. Thanks for the new updates!

If the font size is an issue, it’s always possible to zoom in/out via your browser settings, so maybe that will help? I saw spacing was an issue in stories, but I think they have an icon/feature underneath the cover images (there’s four icons, you know, for font style and sizes. The third one is for spacing, and you can expand/tighten, if anyone didn’t know).

What I would really like is the sorting features back in the legacy story stats, if possible? I really miss that. I was also really hoping there could be a sort of order when it came to choosing the main characters, since only two really shows. When it comes to crossovers, sometimes my most important main character comes last, as the three in the other category automatically are positioned first. It would be nice if they could stay in the order we add them in.

I don’t like the new look of the site at all. I can’t read the words too well because the font is so strange looking now. Being able to flick between themes would be nice, like if we preferred the old one, we’d be able to change back and those that liked the new one would be able to keep it…

  15. Morgana

    03/20/2013 at 2:32 pm

Okay, there are a few good things about the new look of the site. The “document manager” page, for example, looks absolutely fantastic! The bar to select the language, the characters and everything else in the stories looks amazing as well with the new style. But there are also a few problems (I use the last version of Google Chrome, by the way):

    # The new font is a big one. Why change from Verdana to… this? It was not necessary. Basically everyone agreed a few months back that verdana was better than arial and any other font as the default one for the site. Why change something that the majority likes to a new font that bothers everyone: Please, change back to verdana, because this one is way too big and a terrible strain for my eyes.
    # The dark background mixes with the background of the space where the picture and the summary of the story go. What before was supposed to be white, now changes color together with the background of the story and becomes black. Please fix it also, dear fanfiction team. It’s a mess.
    # The dark background is way too light. Yes, the old gray color was better for the eyes, but now… Just, argh.
    # The “Favorite: Story, Author & Follow: Story, Author” space at the end of the story’s page also looks… strange. The old one was better, I think. A change would be good.
    # The stats/graphs page is not loading. I don’t know how to acess my stories’ info anymore, so please, help!
    # We can not follow a story without leaving a review, and that’s absolutely ridiculous! It’s one of the worst changes! It’s not the right thing to do, leave a review just because you want to get the warning of a new chapter. I don’t like this option at all, so please, change it back.

I also spoke with a lot of authors on the site, and a lot of them are thinking about leaving for good. I would not like to leave for another site, but these last changes… I don’t agree with them and I WON’T stay if you don’t fix it and make it better. AND SOON.
I’m tired of some of the changes fanfiction is doing lately. It’s worse every single time, and it bothers me, as a reader and as a writer, that you guys keep changing what does’t need to be changed. Please, JUST LET IT BE! Stop messing around!

I’m sorry if I’m being harsh, but I need to get the message across and this all out of my heart. I love, it’s a site that’s been with me for years now, but these last changes are getting way too much on my nerves. And on the nerves of everybody, it seems.

Thank you for your hard work anyway, guys. I hope everything will be better soon!

Oh wow, you honestly scared me about the whole “you need to review if you want to follow thing,” haha. You can though, I checked. Just look underneath the review box. There’s the report abuse button, then the ‘share’ button, and next to that is the ‘follow/fav’ button. Click on it, and it gives you a pop up to choose whether to follow/fav the story/writer. No need to review.

I agree with the majority of font comments. It’s really hard to read, especially on my Kindle. This is a problem as I like to RP on the forums, but many of the people, myself included, are getting headaches from the new font and it’s stopping us from being able to interact. The font was fine before hand, but now it’s just hurting my eyes too much.

    03/20/2013 at 2:40 pm

Sometimes when trying to give some fresh new things, things get worse. What I had like in for years is mostly the simplicity of its design, a police which is at the same time soft for the eye, good for reading one or two hours without feeling unconfortable, and if simple quite enough to be just perfect.
Now, it seems try to improve things and putting images which is not very useful (it doesn’t add anything for anyone : images don’t help people to choose better the story they want to read and most of the time images used are not in relation of the story – so what is the point in them?) and it hangs heavy the page.
Now again, you change the police and I don’t feel confortable in the new one. Yes, maybe I’m just a girl that loves to keep things the same; but I choose (leaving all other sites of fanfics) just because the tools were easy to use AND because the design was the definition of the functional and simplicity, but the simplicity as all good websites should have.
After all, what gives more attractivity of Fanfiction is its content ; the design should only helps people cleary access and read this content.

Please give Verdana back to us. Thanks very much for your help and work.

Most things are fixed now ! Thank you 🙂 ! But can you also fix the words setting when I try to read ? It’s still to small and awkward for me . And the blackness in the summary box is annoying cause I can’t really read it 😦 ! And lastly when I try to go to my faves on my profile it literally took me 2 – 3 minutes to load :0 ! Usually it only takes 30 – 1 minutes to load tops ! But this is really to long and somewhat annoying . I can’t imagine when I have 10 new faves cause it’ll take me 30 minutes to go through them all 😦 ! Please fix it 🙂 ! Bye

For the majority of the time I use an iPod touch to read fanfiction. With the recent changes though the font is much to small and is incredibly difficult to read. I’m not sure if I am the only one who is having this problem but it would be great of it could be addressed sooner than later.

I like most of the things I’ve seen so far in this update, but the font is very hard to read. It seems to blur together. Please let us have the option to change the font on the main site, or change it back to the one that was used before the update.

The only problem I have is that the font is driving me MAD. The font is really hard to read and it takes more time than usual to scroll around for stories if everything’s a blur. Please change it back to the Verdana font!
It’s always nice for change, but there wasn’t a problem before with the font. Don’t fix if it isn’t broken!

    03/20/2013 at 4:01 pm

I can’t help but feel that the reason for my posts looking like utter crud, meaning I can no longer use styles or textures, is because of this change. Honestly, the only major changes I’ve noticed, since I don’t read much fic anymore, are the font changes and the weird lightening of the website color on forums, and I hate both.
The old font, though a bit hard to read for long periods of time when reading a fic, was much better than this larger one, and less strenuous on the eyes overall. The lighter coloring of the pages just seem abnormal, unneeded, and they hurt my eyes.

I use Internet Explorer 9 as my browser, and my screen resolution is 1366×738, as recommended by my Lenovo. I have no clue what a “device os” is, but I hope this information helps. :/

The new font hurts my eyes and seems really blurry when scrolling. It’s easier to read when using the black background but the box where the summary and picture go also changes colors. The position of the review box/fave, follow bar is odd and font is EXTREMELY LARGE. Go back to Verdana. Please!

  28. Go back to the previous layout!!

    03/20/2013 at 4:52 pm

Uhh I usually don’t comment on stuff like these, cos they’re always fine and all, but right now it seems like everything is screwed up.
If I let the stories have a white background then the letters disappear cos the bg is white and they are too.
Then in the black bg the summary part is the color of the bg instead of the default white. And all the letters are big and weird except in the actual fics, they’re alright there I guess.
I really don’t understand why you had to mess with the layout/fonts. It was fine before, we all love stability/constants and now it’s like, I was promised sunshine and I got a tornado/hurricane/storm D:
Please bring it back to how it was…you could change the colors around if you’d like, instead of the whole blue vibe. It’d be a small change as well as an acceptable one.

While there have been a lot of bad reviews new look-wise, I haven’t seen it for myself as I am on mobile currently, but I have a pretty good idea of what it looks like. You guys will fix it, I know, but it’s best if you guys start having beta testers like how we have beta readers to test out or chapters. That way, you will not have many people leaving bad reviews.

    Good try, though guys.

The font is very unfriendly and hard on the eyes. Everything seems stretched and too far apart. Not to be rude, but if something isn’t broken, please don’t fix it. I’ve come to appreciate how tends to stick with it’s design and is familiar every time I go on to read, write, and enjoy other people’s stories, and this new design deters me from even wanting to log on. I would appreciate the option to revert back to the “old” layout, or remove the new one altogether.

I can’t put my feelings into words for this one. I liked Verdana better, much better. Why did you size it up? Everybody can read everything just fine.
In fact, I liked the older version much better than this.

I hope to see FFn reverting back to before this update. I’m sorry if I hurt anyone, but I really feel strongly about it. There was nothing wrong with the version before, so why update now?

I actually like the new one, now they’ve tweaked it a bit. I didn’t like it at first, but that seems to have been just that it wasn’t what I was used to. Once I got past that, I started to like how clean and uncluttered it looks. I wonder how many other users will find the same thing after a few days?

But as a lot of users actually find it difficult or even impossible to read with comfort, it needs to be sorted, or changed back.

I’m running Windows 7 (64-bit) and IE 8. The new font is very large. Aside from the size, I just don’t think it’s as reader-friendly (too elongated, too light). Liked the old font better. I’ve actually been reducing the size of my IE window to 90% to make things easier to read.

I don’t mind the font actually – it’s the characters thing I have an issue with. I’m all for listing more characters, good idea, but I really wish they didn’t automatically alphabetise in the list. I prefer to have my mains at the top followed by anyone else as character importance is essential to know when you’re a reader. I’m really hoping this is part of the future browser update 🙂

I’m sorry, but the font and the size in the account is difficult to read. The size is too big amb the blue color is not linear, it’s like stained and it and this makes reading difficult and annoying to the eyes really.

You could at least give the option of having the old font?

    Thank you.

I do not like any of the updates. I would like for you to change ALL of them back to the way it was. If that is not possible I would then like for you to at least change the font back to the way it was. The font is now to big and to light to read. It hurts my eyes to look at it. I’ve just spoken with my friends who use this site too and no matter what we do there is nothing that makes this any better. No matter what I do the site hurts my eyes far too much to be able to use it. Until this is fixed we’re going elsewhere to post/read fics.

I get this feeling this new format is going to lag my computer to hell. But it’s more organized, I guess? Anyways, The font is way too big. Normally I wouldn’t complain, but this is a bit too big. And, like many others, I like the old font better. But I can get used to those, even if they hurt my eyes.

What really makes the new format unbearable for me is the lack of that space between paragraphs. I’m sorry if you’ve heard this a million and one times, but I have to say it. It just makes the story harder to read and follow. The paragraphs just seem to meld together. There’s a reason why books have that space between paragraphs.

So please turn that back to the way it was. I can deal with the font changes. I can’t deal with this.

On the other hand, the extra character choice is great! Makes it easier to search for stuff I want.

I’m aware that many other people have posted complaints about the new layout, and that there’s no need to add to it, but after comparing the new and old sites, I had to. I don’t like the new layout. It’s hard on my eyes (it seems so much brighter) and much harder to read. Also, the spacing is way too small and the font is one of the kinds that I absolutely hate. I loved the old design- compact, readable, and easy to navigate with. The buttons seem bloated as compared to before, and, like many others, I would like a feature that allows readers like me to switch from the new to the old layouts. Please take our requests into consideration. Thanks!

The drop-down menus? Please downgrade back to the previous version/style? The current form is also an eyesore due to the extra white spacing around the text, which is just a waste and totally unnecessary.

I prefer the old theme, and the forum posts per page are now 30, not 50. So, it’s not my type. I actually thought my computer wasn’t loading properly.

The new site theme isn’t quite as bad as everyone’s been saying, but I have to admit that the old version was better. With the smaller font you could see more at once, which is nice when you’re browsing through stories. It wasn’t too bad on most of the site, but for some reason seeing my Doc Manager twice as big as normal is terrifying.
The main problem with the new look is all that white space–it’s eyewatering and somehow gets in the way. If that could just be fixed, it would be fine.

While the drop-down menus and new search are very enjoyable and smooth (in my opinion, obviously), my main complaint is the changed font, which I enjoyed much more as the smaller, more compact Verdana.
I don’t have any qualms with the new forum post count, but I definitely think the new font is much too big for the theme, and just generally seems to explode in front of my face. Also, when using the black setting while reading stories (as I have always done), the FFN staff seems to have changed the summary font color, which makes it harder to read.
Hhmm, I like how smooth the new site is, but a few things really aren’t to my liking.

I agree with everyone here. Also, is that Filter Out Character/Genre option ever gonna come?

I agree that the old site theme was much cleaner and there wasn’t so much extra white around everything. Also the drop down menus are a major downgrade, so is the larger font size. Hopefully the people at the site will read these posts and take what were saying seriously.
