Compatibility Update

20 Mar

We have resolved some issues with our last update and this post has been created to be the central list for problem reporting and fix announcements.

Well, on my machine (3.0 Ghz P4 with HT enabled, 4 GB of RAM and Firefox 19.0.2), the graphs for the stats simply don’t load at all and fools the computer into thinking that FireFox isn’t responding. When I looked at task manager, FF RAM usage was 1 GB before I yanked the process.

      03/20/2013 at 1:57 pm

Pretty much the same here, also with Firefox 19.0.2. The stats graphs don’t load, and make Firefox run incredibly slow. As soon as I close the tab, it runs smoothly again.
The font size, on the other hand, has improved since last night. It was quite small, and now it’s a good size again.

OS is Window 7, screen res is 12800×800 by the way.

Same here; Firefox hovers at a consistent 50% CPU usage and the window refreshes once roughly every 2 seconds, with the graph widening a few pixels on every refresh. Closing the tab solves the issue.

I’m having the same problem too. It just wont load I wait and wait and nothing and I’m a Windows 7 and on my Kindle HD it’s slow but it works.

Screen res: 1366 x 768, using opera 12.10, with windows 7, and the font size is quite big, and I can’t make it smaller without zooming out. Also, the buttons for next/previous etc, are really large.

The font is still annoyingly small (everywhere but inside the story pages) or irritatingly big (the search engine at the top of the pages) for me. Could we please revert the font and font size to how it was pre-update? And darken it too!

    • ShikiKira

      03/20/2013 at 3:08 pm

Make that a size and a half too big, and it’s throughout the entire website this time instead of just the browsing pages and the homepage. I have tried the decrease font size in the story pages, but it does not help very much.

The site/my browser isn’t saving altered font options properly. That is to say, I need to re-select the Sans-Serif font option every time I go to a new chapter, or refresh the page. The spacing and width changes do stick, though. I’m using Firefox 19.0.

  14. Catsy

    03/20/2013 at 2:17 pm

Fonts within story text are now “fixed”–by which I mean they no longer appear visually corrupted. But although the font now defaults to a serif font, there is no way to change it back once you select a different font. More annoyingly, there seems to be no way to force FFN to go back to the font it used before this change, which was *just fine*.

Unfortunately these changes still leave all non-story site text garbled.

    Last night before this change:
    Today after your lateset update:

Viewing in Chrome 25.0.1364.172 m on Windows 7 over a Remote Desktop connection at 1024×768.

I need to reiterate: even when accounting for the visual corruption, these changes are NOT for the better. They cause every part of both the UI and the content to waste more space, and they harm readability. The lack of adequate spacing between paragraphs makes them hard to distinguish and is not fixable by using the spacing option, which expands the kerning as well. And it is not possible to fix this within stories by adding extra line breaks because FFN inexplicably strips all successive duplicate line breaks.

Ok, I keep having the same problem ever since you changed things. I write in a specific document, save it, and even though it says that my changes were saved, they don’t appear in the document. It has happened twice so far! I checked if there was a sign saying “document saved” both times, and it did. What’s happening?

I do not use font smoothing/anti-aliasing on my computer or in my browser because the blurring effect on the edges of text that those features cause gives me a headache. The new font (the one on the homepage and story-browsing pages) looks choppy and half-bolded when viewed raw–that is, without font smoothing–and is headache-inducing with font smoothing.

For a picture of what I’m talking about, see here:

Make sure you’re zoomed to 100%, not whatever your browser scales the picture to originally, or it will just look fuzzy.

The text of the stories themselves does seem readable, if I change the font to Arial and tweak the size a bit.

It would be very helpful if the main page font were something more eye-friendly, though. The old font looked great and was perfectly readable. The new one isn’t.

Finally, someone else who’s reporting the same partially-bolded visual corruption I’m seeing–and in a completely different browser, OS and resolution no less.

An interesting note: the visual corruption COMPLETELY disappears if I block JavaScript on FFN, although that renders large chunks of the site unusable in the process. Whatever is causing this, I’d bet anything it’s directly related to something in the “WebFontConfig” JavaScript.

      • radioshack

        03/20/2013 at 3:03 pm

I was able to duplicate in Firefox what you were seeing with disabling JavaScript, and discovered a different way to stop it: by disabling downloadable fonts in my browser. In Firefox, in about:config the setting is called ‘gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled’ — set this to false. I’m not a Chrome user, so unfortunately I’m not familiar with what the equivalent would be there.

This makes the site appear similar to how it did when I disabled JavaScript, but allows JavaScript to remain enabled. My only complaint: the font is rather large when you do this, and this change may affect other sites you view as well, but at least for this site it’s clear and readable now. *shrug*

As near as I can tell, the new font is using is called Open Sans, which is a font that they appear to push out to you with the page, as it’s not a font that’s installed on my computer. Disabling downloadable fonts blocks this, allowing your browser to default to something else. Hope this helps. 🙂

We have tested with windows clear type disabled and latest firefox and cannot replicate your problem. The screenshot is taken of an older edition of the site. Close browser and refresh to see if helps. Lastly, make sure you screen resolution is set to native (max value) or else this can happen.

      • radioshack

        03/20/2013 at 3:18 pm

I tried refreshing, and am still experiencing the issue if I allow downloadable fonts. My screen resolution is native as well. Please see my and Catsy’s comments above for possible further downloadable-font and JavaScript-related insights. Thanks.

      • Catsy

        03/20/2013 at 3:36 pm

This is not a “close browser” issue, and it has nothing at all to do with the native resolution. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the site looks just fine if we disable JavaScript or downloadable fonts.

      • Catsy

        03/20/2013 at 3:56 pm

Not a ClearType issue. Again, I must point out that the site renders just fine if we disable either downloadable fonts or the JavaScript that allows them to be downloaded, and *every other site* on the Internet still displays fine.

I have to ask, why are you even using Google web fonts anyway? What exactly are you trying to do that you can’t do with basic CSS-based font-family selection that does not cause these compatibility issues?

    • Catsy

      03/20/2013 at 4:03 pm

I found a temporary fix for this that works with any browser if you use AdBlock Plus: block

Yes, this will block all Google web fonts, but given the problems with them I don’t think this is any great loss. Even Gmail deprecates just fine.

The fact that blocking Google web fonts fixes this visual corruption issue should be the nail in the coffin in any of the arguments that they are not the source of the problem. Now if we can just get the atrocious space-wasting font and layout changes reverted, the site would go back to something approaching readability.

    03/20/2013 at 2:25 pm

The font is annoying to look at. I think you should use a different font type, like maybe Comic Sans or the normal New Times Roman. I don’t like the way the bar with the browsing stuff at the top looks either, it looked a lot better the way it was before. Other than the appearance looking crappy I’ve not had much of a problem yet.

    • favonilla

      03/20/2013 at 3:22 pm

@Crys: Not Comic Sans, I don’t think that would be a nice reading font. I don’t have a problem with the new one but as a lot of users are having trouble, maybe it should be reset to what it was before.

It’s probably down the list, but there seems to be no facility to sort the Legacy Story page by hit count, reviews etc. If it’s not too much trouble, please could we have that function back? (I notice the story stats page can’t be sorted either – there too, please.)

I know this roll-out has caused some dramas, but even so, I have to say thanks to Xing and the team for the work you’re doing to try to make things work for us. Even if some users don’t like the result, you must have worked your little backsides off, and I appreciate the effort.

Those two fonts are horrible to read in! Why don’t you try them in WordPad and see what you’re suggesting?

As I said on the previous post, this new font looks like italics on stories, and it makes it impossible to know the difference between the two. It is also too light, it’s like I am looking down at my screen, even though I am not.

I support what zikoss said, can we please have the old font back and darken it? This new font makes it infinitely more difficult to read/write stories, and it also makes said stories less creative since you can’t tell when the author is trying to distinguish dialogue between different characters.

    03/20/2013 at 2:44 pm

Okay, there are a few good things about the new look of the site. The “document manager” page, for example, looks absolutely fantastic! The bar to select the language, the characters and everything else in the stories looks amazing as well with the new style. But there are also a few problems (I use the last version of Google Chrome, by the way):

    # The new font is a big one. Why change from Verdana to… this? It was not necessary. Basically everyone agreed a few months back that verdana was better than arial and any other font as the default one for the site. Why change something that the majority likes to a new font that bothers everyone: Please, change back to verdana, because this one is way too big and a terrible strain for my eyes.
    # The dark background mixes with the background of the space where the picture and the summary of the story go. What before was supposed to be white, now changes color together with the background of the story and becomes black. Please fix it also, dear fanfiction team. It’s a mess.
    # The dark background is way too light. Yes, the old gray color was better for the eyes, but now… Just, argh.
    # The “Favorite: Story, Author & Follow: Story, Author” space at the end of the story’s page also looks… strange. The old one was better, I think. A change would be good.
    # The stats/graphs page is not loading. I don’t know how to acess my stories’ info anymore, so please, help!
    # We can not follow a story without leaving a review, and that’s absolutely ridiculous! It’s one of the worst changes! It’s not the right thing to do, leave a review just because you want to get the warning of a new chapter. I don’t like this option at all, so please, change it back.

I also spoke with a lot of authors on the site, and a lot of them are thinking about leaving for good. I would not like to leave for another site, but these last changes… I don’t agree with them and I WON’T stay if you don’t fix it and make it better. AND SOON.
I’m tired of some of the changes fanfiction is doing lately. It’s worse every single time, and it bothers me, as a reader and as a writer, that you guys keep changing what does’t need to be changed. Please, JUST LET IT BE! Stop messing around!

I’m sorry if I’m being harsh, but I need to get the message across and this all out of my heart. I love, it’s a site that’s been with me for years now, but these last changes are getting way too much on my nerves. And on the nerves of everybody, it seems.

Thank you for your hard work anyway, guys. I hope everything will be better soon!

      03/20/2013 at 3:37 pm

You don’t have to threaten the site admins with leaving to get them to fix a lot of those problems. A lot of those problems will likely be fixed soon. As for not being able to favorite stories except via review, there is a nice button at the bottom of the page now for that.

    • Jane

      03/20/2013 at 4:58 pm

You can still follow a story even if you don’t review. Simply obtain the story id and go to Alerts and Story Alerts. Paste it there and it should work.

    03/20/2013 at 2:49 pm

Stop trying add new features. You have messed the site up too much with useless stuff. At least ask your users first about future changes. You’re going to drive a lot of people away if you keep changing stuff.

    • yemi hikari

      03/20/2013 at 3:28 pm

Again you complain about the site admins updating the site. The problem isn’t that they’ve updated the site with to many useless things, the problem happens to be that they need to work out the bugs in the latest update and change a few things back that they either didn’t realize where changed or that simply didn’t work at all by changing. Patience is a virtue.

I’m on an ipad3, running the latest iOS update, and everything is insanely large–especially the drop down menus. Also, the line height is ridiculously large and the font is huge, it’s a hassle to read anything. It all looks alright on an iPhone (but is still dismail), tbh the new layout doesn’t work for the iPad resolution, everything has a blur for me since it seems to automatically appeared to be zoomed in on? Also, none of the addintional options work when viewing a story.

I don’t like the font change in size; it hurts my head and eyes. The new follow/favorite system is also hard to distinguish from the old system, tied to the review button, and the lack of coloration on chapters and the fact that clicking any one of them automatically takes you there can be a big pain when reading something with a lot of chapters.

No, it’s not tied to the review button. Under the “Type your review here” box, you have also a “Follow/Favorite” button. By clicking it, you’ll get a pop-up menu (or whatever it’s called) where you can add the story and/or author to alerts and/or favorites – without being obliged to leave a review. 🙂

The very fact that this is confusing so many people should suggest to any competent UI designer that they need to rethink their design.

Font size is too big in opera mobile 10 on a windows mobile 6.5 phone which has a resolution of 840×480. Font is also sloped which makes it more difficult to read for long periods. Please switch back to the older font, it was much easier to read and was easier on the eyes.
A compromise would be adding drop down menus so that readers can choose which font to use and what size font as well. Drop down menus is a better choice than a script as it would have better compatibility over multiple devices.

I really like the new font, but it’s so large. Will this be the current size going forward? The size of the font when the new theme was rolled out was perfect.

For what it’s worth, I’m using IE10, Windows 8 and a screen resolution of 1920×1080.

The font is too big. It becomes jarring when you switch tabs to other websites that has smaller fonts, and may lead to straining eyes and getting headaches. You’re free to do whatever changes you please, but the font is too big.

  34. ElvenQueen18

    03/20/2013 at 3:27 pm

The changes are mostly fine to me. I’m not even that fussed with the font (since there’s the option to change it) or the space in between paragraphs (since I can use the zoom option on my computer to zoom out the page a little). What kind of bothers me is that some chapters titles in the chapter navigation get cut off if they exceed a certain length when you’re not looking/scrolling through the chapters. Will this be fixed any time soon?

    • yemi hikari

      03/20/2013 at 3:40 pm

Only if they were too long to fit in the bar (and in my experience, that didn’t happen very often). Now, the chapter navigation bar is much shorter than it was just a day ago.

Stats charts are now working in both IE8 and IE9, and I have to say I think the pages look really neat and clean. I don’t seem to be getting the “big/little/faint” font problems others mentioned, and it’s all quite crisp and easy on the eye. The only problem is not being able to sort the story breakdown by number of hits etc, which as I’ve got a lot of stories and like to see quickly which ones are being read, is a little frustrating.

But as long as I have stats, I’m happy.

“The only problem is not being able to sort the story breakdown by number of hits etc, which as I’ve got a lot of stories and like to see quickly which ones are being read, is a little frustrating.”

Bien dit, mon ami(e)! 😉 Seriously, I miss this option, too, and can’t help but wonder if it disappeared because of a bug or was purposefully deleted. I hope it wasn’t the latter, though…

I hope that it was a bug and gets added back in.

I’m not getting any sort of font problems on my end, but then again I’m not using one of the browsers they ended up fixing the font for. I’m using Chrome. I personally think the new look actually looks cleaner and once the site admins get the issues resolved a lot of people will actually be pleased with the results. They just won’t be able to see it until then.

I see you like to comment about what other people are saying. Why don’t you say what you liked about the new style and let other people say what they want without your meddling? (I know that sounds harsh, but it’s what I think and I don’t know how to say it any other way).

The font’s still terrible. Too straining to the eye. Could we have an option to change it back to the other font?

The font size seems ok, to me. However, it is too sharp.

As someone else said, the info area on the story page has a dark background if we’re reading with dark background.

Changing from dark to light background, the story font color does not change to black. (Requires a refresh.) Does not seem to happen when changing from light to dark background (the font color changes correctly on the story body).

Font sharpness in story body seems to be fine.

I’ve been having that story color problem too. They shouldn’t go fixing what ain’t broke.

The changes are good, but the source is so old and badly written, that it was bound to bring “problems.”

It’s about time they started fixing things! Just because you have no idea how much work this is, doesn’t make it any less important.

The links to images that I click does not work, every time a black screen appears. My browser is Firefox19.o.

You really need a choice for a serif font. Some people have real issues reading san serif, which is probably counter-intuitive on a reading site. Outside that, now that the stats page is fixed, most of what I’ve tried (there are some things I haven’t tried, like editing a story yet,or using a dark page), look quite good.

Eh, the summary box at the top of the page once you click on the story is hard to read. Now that the background is also dark grey, the black font blends in a lot more along with the hyperlinked words. I think you should make those light to bring them out more.

Also, I do have to say the new updated face on the pages is ugly and no longer aesthetically pleasing. I have to find myself zooming out which is a pain because when I open new tabs to other sites, I have to zoom back in. What happened to clean, sleek look you guys had?

Do you think it would be possible to have an option to have the old style of FFN with the updated features?

    nook color, built in browser.

wheres the link to tell the site to go to mobile mode?

    same for the nintendo 3ds.

xbox 360, IE, wheres the link to tell the site to go to mobile mode?

The font is so annoying with its small size. The page is way to bright and the searches and everything is all messed up now. Please fix it! The way it looked before was great!

Ohhh so the font is a rounder San Serif then? And the site layout is alot softer and has grey lines??? I’m using Chrome and I thought it had to do with Java. Lol 😛

      03/22/2013 at 10:08 pm

What does Java have to do with a website’s design???

Stats are still “growing” despite the fix. Running Google Chrome Version 25.0.1364.172 (for Windows).
