Compatibility Update

20 Mar

We have resolved some issues with our last update and this post has been created to be the central list for problem reporting and fix announcements.

Note that browser compatibility is very difficult due to different os, screen resolution, device type, and browser vendor but we have already resolved some of the first reported problems and are working hard to knock off the rest shortly.

Can someone please help me find the mobile fanfiction! After years of being bothered with pop-ups and just complete disorganization from the fanfiction site I finally started reading from the mobile version instead on my computer. The font was small the stories were easier to read and neater. Everything was simple and easy to use. I hate the regular site for computers, everything is so distracting with the summary included in every chapter and the picture of the authors icon. Also the too big words and how everything just seems to run together. I barely read anything on this website anymore because I’m so sick of updates and the site changing every three minutes. Stick to something and be done with it! If I don’t find the mobile version I think I’ll just stick with A03 instead.

At the top with the blue banner where it says “ | unleash your imagination” There’s a little picture of a phone that says “Mobile” Just click on that and everything would look like it was as if you’re on your phone 🙂 I know, I’m using the mobile version on the computer too because at least the font size doesn’t hurt my eyes.

To Find the mobile version, just replace the “www” in the address bar with an “m”. It will look like this:

Search issues. Was at the search results of a fic, and i decided to try searching up an author. This is what I got.

When you go on “doc manager” earlier, you could sort the docs so, after time, words… that´s not possible anymore. I used that a lot, to see when it would “disappear” docs next time

I don’t get it why the people are complaining about it; sure, I prefer the old font, but this one is still readable. And it’s not so easy to fix something, so would you please become more polite in stating your opinion? The site’s owner had worked hard for the Monster March, so if you want to state your opinion, please state it politely.

I agree that people should be a bit more polite but the reason there are complaints is because instead of just fixing errors and actually making useful improvements, they’ve changed things that didnt need to be changed and now a lot of us are experiencing problems because of those changes.

      03/21/2013 at 5:14 am

Ditto! I think we’ll eventually get used to the new font so there’s no point complaining about it. I myself am more upset with not being able to sort my stories in the Stats area…

@VerMa – I think they’re working on that – it’s in Xing’s list of pending issues to be fixed.

Yeah, people complained that they were having eyestrain and all, it may be true, but I didn’t feel anything. I don’t know why. Hahahah

I hope they fix the problems on the site soon.

      03/21/2013 at 5:19 am

Well said. No matter how strongly users feel about this issue, there’s no reason they can’t voice their opinions in a civil and polite manner. Xing and the team have obviously worked hard, and continue to do so, and I’m appalled at some of the childish ranting they’ve received.

By all means, if you have a problem, let them know, but good manners cost nothing, and are much more likely to be taken seriously.

“I think they’re working on that – it’s in Xing’s list of pending issues to be fixed.”

Okay, I’m gonna trust you on that as I have little to no idea what they mean by “Table column sorting for some admin pages”. 🙂

I’m agreeing with your sentiment too. I don’t have any problems with the changes so far, but some of the complaints calling the staff “idiots” are just uncalled for, I feel.

There are two things I assume are bugs that don’t work for me:
    1) When reading a story I can’t change font size, neither up nor down. Clicking the small letters do nothing.
And like people have said before, the general font size of chapter titles, drop-down menus etc seem to have increased to at least 14 or 16. I don’t mind the option for larger fonts to exist, but it would be nice to be able to make it smaller.

    2) Again when reading: The dark/light contrast themes are completely wacky for me. Dark theme is readable from what it first was, but is still dark background and black letters for story information. The light contrast is white text on white background and therefore completely unreadable.

I just don’t understand why they don’t take our opinons and wishes into account. There has been an overwhelming majority that don’t like the newest batch of changes for this site. So many people would prefer it be returned to how it was 48 hours ago. Not only was it easier to read and caused less strain on your eyes but it simply worked out better than it does now. An extra window just to allow us to favourite a story, when just two days ago all I had to do was click a button and it registered my favourite. No extra windows needed. That was perfect and didn’t need to be changed.

Also, the new font size and the inability to make it smaller is also a problem. Why don’t they just give us an option to go back to the font size it was before. How it looks now causes to much strain on a lot of peoples eyes. I’ve spent the last four hours nursing a headache I got from reading for just over an hour on this site. How is that a good thing? And I know I’m not the first one to have similar complaints.

It’s been less than a year since the last major overhaul of the site. There’s a saying that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Well let tell you all something, the site wasn’t broken and it deffinately did NOT need fixing.

Xing and his team should take what were saying into account. I understand updating software and making sure everything runs smoothly but the changes done to the site, at least as far as I can see, were merely cosmetic and completely unnecessary.

      03/21/2013 at 6:43 am

@WinchesterGrl09: I wouldn’t dream of assume they’re not listening. There’s a lot of adjusting been going on; the changes to the site are obvious. Perhaps if after a few days (which isn’t very long) the problems remain unsolvable, then they might reverse it. But they didn’t bring it in without thought, and they may want to get all the bugs out and see if it’s better, instead of panicking and throwing it away, and that does take time. They’ve been working constantly, adjusting the new platform and fixing bugs, trying to make it better; and yes, they are “taking what we’re saying into account”. Will it hurt to wait a few days before deciding that they’re not listening?

As it happens, I’m liking the new look more and more as I grow accustomed to it. There’s still a few bugs to be ironed out, but I’ve actually found the new styling is easier on my dodgy eyesight than the old one was.

In the past three months, there have been redesigns by my email providers (three separate providers), my preferred online newspaper the national broadcaster. I complained mightily about all of them, especially the newspaper which I thought was unreadable; but after a week or so, once they’d got all the bugs fixed and I’d grown accustomed to the new look, I found they were actually okay.

Surely the world will not cease to turn if we all cultivate a little patience. The admins have been told of everyone’s concerns. Repeating the same complaints over and over gains nothing.

We can’t sort by column on the “Traffic Stats” >> “Legacy Story Stats” page anymore, which is probably the #1 thing I check daily on and sort by the “reviews,” “faves,” etc. The newer story stats that have been around for a few years, I’ve never really been able to use them as easily.

As with a lot of others, I’m not really a fan of the new font, I don’t think anything tops verdana for readability. Maybe a good solution would be to add an option for us all to choose which font we want the website to be in? I know other ff archives can do that, so it can’t be too complicated, just an idea from a daily user for the last 12 years. ^^ Easy to offer font options for how much reading/writing we all do on the site can only be a good thing.

    • favonilla

      03/21/2013 at 3:12 pm

@Bunny – the stats thing has been raised, and it seems to be on Xing’s “to-do” list (see original post).

And might I say, it’s a pleasure to see your other concerns expressed in a moderate tone with helpful suggestions. That’s exactly how it should be done.

The new theme is so much better than the old one! Please keep it and don’t listen much to the angry folks, they’re always angry when there’s something new.

Also, the captcha on the login page in incomprehensible, it usually takes about 3 to 4 tries to login. Maybe change it to something like re:captcha, or remove it altogether?

    03/21/2013 at 6:56 am

Ok, this new font is just really, really bad. I start feeling eye-strain before I’m even halfway though a single line, and to add to that i have to read slower then normal, because my eyes start jumping characters if i read at normal speed. It is just a horrific choice.

If you are going to insist on keeping this font, at least give us the old one as an option. The site is unusable in it’s current state, and will remain that way as long as this horrible font is forced on us.

    • nowistand

      03/21/2013 at 3:08 pm

As said before, it *is* still usable. You can still read it and can still post things to the site, therefore making it still usable.

      • Weresmilodon

        03/21/2013 at 3:42 pm

I don’t count a site as usable if it starts to give me a headache within minutes of trying to use it.

      • nowistand

        03/21/2013 at 3:45 pm

Then you should’ve stated it gave you a headache. But technically speaking, the sites are still usable, it’s just that they are not up to quality standard.

Now I can’t say whether they give me a headache or not because I’ve had a migraine for past few days.

      • Weresmilodon

        03/21/2013 at 4:01 pm

Headache is a very common result from eyestrain. I didn’t think i even needed to say it.

Maybe the site is usable to some, but I’m note some, I’m me. It’s not usable to me, therefore, i report is as unusable.

It’s just as valid to say it’s technically usable as it is to say it is not. ‘Technically usable’ is never good enough, unless you are doing very small scale testing of an unfinished product during development. It has no place here. Had this been a test build separate from the main site, it would have been a different thing, but it is not, and should not be treated as such.

      • nowistand

        03/21/2013 at 4:07 pm

So be it but you still have to state it to have it taken into consideration.

But it is usable. The definition of usable is the following:

        “Able to be used”

You can use it though there are negative side affects of doing so.

You took my words out of context. I didn’t say that it it was technically usable, I said that technically speaking it is usable. I never said it was a test either.

The point of many people making negative or positive comments is to let those working on fixing the bugs know the feelings of those posting. For everyone of us who makes either a positive or negative comment there are probably a few hundred who are thinking the same thing and not commenting.

On the whole I think the site is very good, it’s free for us to use and put up our ramblings on, but maybe they need to find a way to ask what the users want to see on the site, like a way to filter out slash stories for those of us who don’t want to troll through pages of slash to find something we want to read.

Please note I’m not saying slash stories shouldn’t be published, just asking for a way to filter them out.

I think that a better tagging system would be much better. Why not put their efforts into helping us sort the archives of stories rather than all sorts of cosmetic updates that do nothing for the epxerience?

@Graham King: Feedback is very important, but getting all nasty about it isn’t the way to go. I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone; I’m just stating a fact. Honesty is always the best policy, but there are ways of being blunt without bringing a bunch of f-bombs into it.

Currently, I think this blog is actually the fastest way of having our voices heard, even if it doesn’t seem like it all the time. I’m sure Xing is listening, in fact, there are various areas in each thread that he does pop up with a comment, especially if someone has a compatibility issue and he needs to prompt them to give him the information he needs in order to be of help.

All we have to do is imagine how we would react if we were in his or the rest of the team’s shoes. I bet we would all be singing a completely different tune if we had to work tirelessly on coding and maintaining a site, and no matter what you do, no one seems to be happy. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them are on anti-depressants.

My only complaint is those damn borders. Maybe it’s just me, but those borders on the page make the story look scrunched up. If you must have borders, fine. But please don’t make them so pronounced. It makes the story look scrunched up, bulky, and unappealing.

I don’t mind the new layout per say, although it was a shock considering it wasn’t like this for me yesterday. But I would rather the drop down menus were changed back to how they were and majorly I’d like the whole site to be made 10% smaller. I’ve had to change my zoom level from 100% to 90% because the whole page was just too big and garish for me to be able to look at.

Honestly, the only problem I have with the new update is the size of the font. It’s too big and it gives too much discomfort to my eyes just by reading someone’s work. The old version’s font was just perfect for me; it was easier and faster to read; rather than squinting my eyes and trying to get the words into my head which it definitely isn’t doing right now. For me, discomfort in reading means that I’d be unable to properly understand the story and that’s a huge problem. Please change the font back to how it was previously, or give us the option to decrease the font size in the font settings.

I can’t stand the font. It’s too big for my eyes, and I’m sitting there thinking, “what the hell?!”

We is a broad term. It is used in regards to a group of people and in times like this can be read in different ways. My first thought when reading it was that you said everyone didn’t like it even though you already said you know there are some people that like it.

And missing something isn’t a good enough reason to change something. Nor is the comment ‘I can’t stand the new font.’ How is it too big for your eyes? Does it give you migraines? Some other health problem?

Not really a comment on the news: I’ve noticed some beta readers fail to permit PM. If an author can’t ask for help from a beta, the system fails miserably.

Can we please have the old font size back? The new font size is hurting my eyes too much and I can’t properly read without suffering from headaches. It looks a lot better than it did yesterday! While I honestly like the old design better, the new one isn’t hideous and I can find my way around. I don’t use the forum and the account menu only to keep track of the stories I read.

The font (I use Verdana) in the stories however is too large for my tastes!!! I know some people prefer it larger, but with the white background it’s uncomfortable to read. Normally I would just decrease the font size in the settings but It’s already on the lowest available size. Please change back the the font to pre-update levels or at least give us the means to recreate that look. As it is I am stuck with a large font I can only decrease by scrolling with my browser.

I don’t understand why so many people are complaining whenever the site changes its design. I’m sure this happened last year, and now it’s happening this year. This makes me wonder if people are scared of change, since whenever they ask for something to happen and they get it, they still complain about the change, which is contradictory in itself.

I myself did notice the site design change on my e-mail as well. Sure, I don’t like it at first (which I will admit, I didn’t like the changes made to the site at first), but since yesterday, I’ve found a way to adjust and learn to live with it. Besides, I knew last year I didn’t think the font Verdana looked very good on the site, in spite of what most people have said, so changing the font was for the better. Besides, if this helps my eyes, then I’m fine with the font. I think the admins are listening, but as other people have said, we need to stop complaining over and over again, as it gets nothing done. I know from experience, and usually complaining over and over again ends poorly.

I”m not upset that they’re updating the site but this is one of the biggest overhauls to the site I’ve seen in my ten years of using this site. I’ve have never seen so many massive changes at one time. ever. And if so many people don’t like the overall look that it now has then that must mean that even more people don’t like it. A lot of the changes seem unnecessary and in some cases even redundant. Honestly all the new theme of the site has done is make seem older, sloppy and less sleek than it did previously. Big drop down menus and extra large wording are not modern and are simply causing many readers to suffer headaches.

  33. Graham King

    03/21/2013 at 2:49 pm

I have to agree with the sentiment about being polite when making your point, there is a world of difference between: ‘This update sucks and I hate it, wtf are you doing?’ and posting a message saying, ‘I’m having a problem with the update and stating the problem.’

The thing is if one person reports a problem then the problem may be confined to that person, when several people using different email clients, OS and browsers all report similar problems then those doing the coding know that the problem may be on their end.

It’s like when all the electricity fails in your house, if you can’t find the problem, you look outside to see if your neighbours are also affected.

    • TheAnnoyingVoice

      03/21/2013 at 3:12 pm

@ Graham King: I agree completely. I have no doubts that a lot of people are experiencing the same problem, but again, it all comes down to how that problem is presented. You make a very good point with your power failure comparison, by the way. But both situations, this one with the site’s font, and your point about the power failure, require patience.

After determining everyone else’s power is out, including street lights, you know you’re going to be in for a long wait, especially if you call the company and there’s a high call volume. It can take 4-6 hours for the problem to be rectified because the workers have to turn off the power and then begin the delicate processing of fixing the wires or replacing a blown transformer.

Basically, what I’m trying to say, is once a problem is stated, leave it at that and check back in a few hours.

I’d like to add something to the power outage example. In cases where there is wide power outage due to a storm knocking over great amounts of lines the power company will prioritize hospitals and people they know to have special needs and need the power, then businesses that people need, the places they can access the easiest and then finally the places that access has been returned to. They have to prioritize everything.

I’m not sure if this is the same for all browsers, but I’ve noticed that once you go to a new page within FFN, the page takes a while to load and in Chrome, you will see a white page [the text is gone until it loads, and it jumps around] like the browser is trying to smooth out the gaps in the font. It could be something to look into, especially because when the site does this, the memory usage sometimes skyrockets and makes the window freeze. [Not all of the time, but it’s a pain when it does freeze on me.]

I’m using Google Chrome 25.0.1364.172 on Windows 7.

Thank you so much for changing the font back! It’s so much easier to read now.

Can there please be a different font style? The Verdana just doesn’t seem to be working as well as a different style of font would be. In fact it makes it seem like all the words run together without any spaces between them. The size seems okay now but a different style of font would improve it even more.

The extra large drop down menus still seem like an unecessary change though. Maybe somethign could be down about that?

Sorry it’s not the Verdana style that is bugging me its the Arial Font that is making it hard to read. Once you click on Verdana it looks much better. My bad.

The story fonts aren’t working properly they show up in the smallest font and then they do not allow me to enlarge the font again and when i can enlarge the font it is too large skipping the middle enlargement. I’m sorry to say that this Update of has just been a slew of unneeded problems and until these problems are worked out reading on is just too much of a hassle.

Thank-you for fixing all the problems and the issue with the font. The new changes look great, and posting chapters seems quicker than before.

I’m pleased the stat pages are fixed, and no longer grow/reload the browser every second. It looks good.

Funny… When I scrolled out to 90%, they started growing again. I wonder what is the cause.

Sort of an odd question but I actually really prefer the 10.5 font size. Is there a way to go back to that? When I make it smaller it’s too small and when I make it larger it’s far too large. Is this a glitch or is there really no font size between 10 and 12? Because for Verdana, the different between the two is pretty dramatic.

Current site doesn’t print correctly on Chrome 25.0.1364.172 on MacOS X 10.6.8. The right edge ALWAYS overflows no matter what the margins are set to. This didn’t happen with Chrome and the old site.

I’m using windows xp with windows internet explorer.

Hi again its Steven Van Overbeke. I thought I should let you all know that I found another problem that seems to happen alot is that the stories if your default setting is set for the dark theme and you switch it back to the original theme of white background with black letters the writing tends to disappear most of the time as in the letters do not transition back to black letters and instead stay white and disappear into the white background.
For example here is a current story that I am reading and what happens when I switch from dark theme to light theme
    Before on Dark Theme:
    And after on Light Theme:

This seems to happen not just with this specific story but stories in multiple areas such as Dr. Who. Harry Potter and NCIS just to name a few, more specifically the story Catalyst as an example. It also seems to occur if the story has been idle for a little bit like when you leave the room for a few minutes to get a drink or something.
Just in case you are wondering my specs are Google Chrome Version 25.0.1364.172 m and my operating system is: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 on PC The 32 bit version.
    Thanks for your time.

I can’t get the tabs to work on any author’s page. When I click on Favorite Stories or Favorite Authors nothing changes, I still see the list of My Stories. I’m using Firefox and never had any problems with the site. Also, the browse/just in/communities bar at the top is “folded out” downwards, but I can live with that. But I really want to get on to the Favorite Stories tab! Please help.

I don’t know why they took away the ability to sort out both monthly and overall stats to rank them by clicking the column on top. I really miss that.

The color theme is still messed up. The font is still weird for me. I use the Firefox browser version 19.0.2. Screen resolution for my laptop is 1366×768. Operating system is Windows 7 (64 Bit). The text size is making my eyes hurt. Please fix it! Thanks!

The categories on the main page are a bit weirdly placed for me
Browser is Opera 12.14, screen resolution is 1920×1080, and working system is Win 7 64 bit, though Opera works on a 32 bit platform.

The Color theme is messed up for me for my bookmarked pages. one or two works fine but most are messed up since i use the dark theme when i click over to the normal the page is completely white where the store is at and have to highlight it to see the words. If i look for a new story it fine
