All Quiet On the Western Font

21 Mar

As result of all the great feedback we have resolved most if not all of the font-sizing and jagged edged problems that plagued some users and especially those with Windows XP/Vista PCs.

We have also tweaked the default font-sizing to be 1 size smaller for most displays except for HD+ (1600×900 resolution or higher) monitors/laptops and this new setting appears to be the current happy medium.

For the devoted Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Comic Sans fans or anyone that like the idea of a font buffet, keep an eye out for another update later tonight.

Viva la fonts!

UPDATE: Our developers decided sleep deprivation was not too good for quality control and thus a decision has been made to suspend all pending feature pushes until tomorrow.  Devs are human too, sometimes.

allow images and art work to be posted aong with stories!… and increase the length of summary characters..

also allow Hyper text markips… and formatting displays…

also mobile views do not display italicised text solve the issue!

No, not more images – how many times must this be said? FictionPress and FFNet are WRITING sites, there are plenty of other websites for posting pictures. The ones we have now already slow things down, and distract from the core purpose of the sites, which is reading and writing.

The summary length is plenty long enough. You only want a teaser, after all. Learn to be concise, it’s a writer’s best tool.

Your other suggestions sound like the kind of playthings incompetent writers use to try to mask their incompetence. They are not necessary. If you can read a paper book or e-book without them, why should they be needed here?

Sorry to be so negative, but let’s not turn this site into something it isn’t. Learn the art of writing, and you’ll soon find you don’t need to use special effects to tell your story.

I agree. Particularly with the comment you made about more images and longer summaries being a way for writers to cover their weak points. The only reason the site admins added cover art is because it is honestly one of the ways books do in fact attract people’s attention.

I don’t mind the new font, I’d prefer it darker because I have extremely poor eyesight and have to zoom in the page anyways, but it’s fairly basic and easy to read.

On the other hand, whenever I try to do a search for a community and I click on a particular group (ex: Harry Potter), I get an error page. That is not cool. I’m on Chrome, btw.

When I leave a review for a story, I often like to copy and paste selections of story text and respond to it within a review. Prior to the site changes I was able to copy and paste these selections without any problem into a Word document for review drafting. Now, I find that it often requires resizing. The text appears in a very small font, usually size 7. I am using the site functionality to expand the font size and put the story width at 3/4 for viewing. When I copied and pasted story text before I didn’t need to do that. What changed after the site update?

I know I’m adding a step many reviewers don’t by copying and pasting into a Word document, but it leads to better drafted reviews and I think authors appreciate that.

    I use:

    Windows 7
    IE 9

Until they get it fixed, hit ctrl+shift+c instead of just ctrl+c. You should get an option where you can select unformated text.

Another option is to use notepad to write your reviews (though admittedly it has no spellcheck feature). I hope you find something that works for you. c:

Just a question: would it be possible to have the text you’re typing in review boxes and PM boxes be made darker as well?

I’m not getting PM alerts but I’m receiving alerts about stories I’m following.

In the story stats if I click on individual chapters the graphs about the country breakdown do not show.

I think others have mentioned this, but in my story stats I can’t sort favorites and alerts by alphabet or date anymore.

I have a suggestion. You give us the option to have polls on our profiles for members to vote for whatever the poll topic is. What if you did the same thing for FFN’s homepage? Just for an example, let’s say you were thinking of giving us the option to edit our reviews after submitting them. You could make a poll saying, “Do you like the idea of being able to edit your reviews after submitting them?” and then give the options “yes” or “no” or “maybe” or something like that.

It would be a more efficient, less headache inducing, way of getting opinions on a certain feature before implementing a feature.

    That’s only a suggestion though.

      03/25/2013 at 6:28 pm

@TheAnnoyingVoice – your suggestion sounds good to me, only except I almost never go to the home page 😀 I think it could work very well.

        03/25/2013 at 8:30 pm

I imagine not many people do. I’m sure they would frequent it a lot more though to vote “for” or “against” various features. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be complaints after… but, it would probably give Xing a little piece of mind for a while at least.

      03/27/2013 at 10:00 pm

Yeah, they should at least ask us before changing anything. The way they change things are so arbitrary.

      • yemi hikari

        03/28/2013 at 1:51 am

Says the person whose complained every single time a change has been made even if it honestly has been a good change.

    • yemi hikari

      03/28/2013 at 1:49 am

I don’t think it is a good idea. The poll system they have currently can be tricked simply by creating a lot of sock puppet accounts. There are certain people who are going to be negative about everything and go out of their way to stop what amounts to good changes. On the flip side, certain people will also be begging for polls relating to Ma content, real people and other rule issues that the site admins have in place for good reason.

      • TheAnnoyingVoice

        03/30/2013 at 2:05 am

Ah, yes. I can see your point, Yemi. I remember my dad once saying, “Wherever there’s a lock, there will always be someone there with a key.” So, in other words, it doesn’t really matter what Xing and the others do, there will always be someone who will abuse the system. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true.

    03/25/2013 at 2:10 pm

Well, things have gotten a bit better, but there are still problems.

Sizes for example. Here are examples of the old and new font next to each other. ( The left is the old standard, the right is the new. It can not be reduced in size any more, which is a problem for at least me, as it is hard to read at current size. Turns out it is the large size that causes my eyes to jump letters and not recognize words.

Another problem is that the new headache font is everywhere else on the site. Author profiles, summaries, everything in the profile settings as well as news are now a literal pain to read.

I’m not sure when exactly you changed this, so this is probably in the wrong place. However, I have a problem with the sorting on the Legacy Story Stats page. The problem being that there is no sorting.

Hawk, that’s been a problem since the big update. Hopefully it’s on the list to be fixed.

I like the option of having new fonts, but I do have a suggestion. I’m not sure if this is the right place to leave it. If not, tell me where else I can leave this suggestion.

As an author, sometimes I lose track of which reviews I answered and which ones I didn’t, especially for older stories. I wish the review responses could be visible under the actual review like in other fanfiction websites I’ve visited. Ex:

Or even if the answering reviews by pm feature stays the same, I would be okay with that because I do like that if allows you to start a conversation with readers. However, if there was just like a symbol of some sort, a check mark, x, star, anything to let you know that you already answered that review, I would be extremely grateful, and I think it would make the site even better than it already is.

    Thank you.

… or you could just check your outbox to see to whom you have already replied.

      • yemi hikari

        03/28/2013 at 1:55 am

… which isn’t really a feasible idea when it comes down to it. A lot of people have a ton of stuff in their out box.

      • fems

        03/28/2013 at 9:11 am

Oh and I don’t? It’s very simple really; you get your review alerts in your (email) inbox and those are usually collected in one email, keeping everything from that day neatly together. Then you can use those reply links to send PMs back to reviewers in the same order you received them. If, at some point, you get more emails/reviews and are wondering if you forgot/skipped someone you can easily check your outbox to see to whom you sent the last PM and compare it to the list of reviews on FFnet.

The method has served me well ever since FFnet felt it necessary to change the review system into the PM system and thereby not letting you know whether you had already replied when you clicked on the reply link in your email alert.

If you can’t handle that then you probably shouldn’t live independently either, considering how many regular mail you might receive and oh my, how to keep track of everything you’ve read and paid for!

On a sidenote, I would really dislike open review replies! The way review replies are private is one of the few reasons why I actually prefer(red) FFnet over my other archives. I have plenty of regular reviewers and over time I’ve gotten to know some of them a bit and I know what kind of replies they do and don’t like; some prefer a somewhat standard, others want spoilers, several don’t want spoilers, etc.

I always try to make my replies somewhat personal and it helps build a rapport with your reviewers, but I would be hindered in that attempt if the review replies become public and are there for everyone to see. It would lose the personal touch and also show how standard some people’s responses are; I’ve gotten a few very standard replies from the few stories I’ve reviewed (in an elaborated manner) and thus I’ve stopped reviewing them, but that doesn’t mean others should too. And there are, of course, the few “oh, amazing chapter, plz update soon” kind of reviews some people give, which don’t leave for a lot of variation in review responses, especially if there’s more than one person giving that kind of comment and it would make it seem like the author is lazy if their responses are alike. They wouldn’t know that, though, when the review replies remain personal.

        04/24/2013 at 9:26 pm

@ fems – I thought you were referring to the sites PM

Personally, I don’t care if one of my reviewers likes spoilers or not, I rarely if ever give them out in the first place because then the reader has something to look forward to as they read.

    • favonilla

      03/25/2013 at 6:31 pm

@Sara – I can see how that would be useful. Some writers get a large volume of reviews, and while fems’s suggestion of keeping track via the pm outbox would work, it wouldn’t be as efficient as having a little mark right next to the review. If it doesn’t involve too much trouble with coding etc, I’d say yes to this.

    • yemi hikari

      03/28/2013 at 1:53 am

I agree. The site admins are planning on having a feature to publicly show responses so that would solve the problem.

Still not getting alerts either. I got one for a pm earlier but when I went to my inbox I found two messages. Also got no alert for review but did get a notification about the story being added to someone’s alerts. This is really frustrating anyone know what’s going on?

Had no problems whatsoever with the updates of the site, but I’ve been sincerely missing a serif font for a long time now. It gets really hard to read with san-serif fonts, or that’s my case anyway. Always thought that the best fonts to read were the serif ones because they are easily followed by the eye.

Anyway, that’s my only complain. When I saw the new fonts I thought there would be a serif one at least! But oh well…

Once upon a time, children were raised to be polite and grateful when they received a gift e.g. a free online archive to post self-penned stories). They were also taught that competition exists, not everyone can be No. 1, your personal opinion does not need to be consulted on every decision in the world, and that growing up meant that you had to come to terms with the hard, cold facts of Life in order to be considered mature. Then something happened and everyone got a ribbon just for breathing, everyone’s opinion mattered equally, gratitude and courtesy became old-fashioned and maturity became a dirty word. I will leave it to you to decide whether you belong in the first group or the second. By the way, it has absolutely nothing to do with age.

    • yemi hikari

      04/24/2013 at 9:27 pm

And the second group expects the first group to put up with their spoiled tantrums when someone calls them out.

The font is still way too small for me. I have to strain my eyes to read certain things & I REALLY don’t need that (I’ve had enough eye problems thank you). My main problem is reading search results, the search options on the side (the “narrow results” section (e.g., sections (e.g., “movies”, “books”, etc.), “category”, “language”, etc.), info about a story (e.g., author, summary, rating, language, category, etc.), & reading info in user’s profiles- pretty much every area of the website. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say here. I loved the font the way it was- it worked for me & I didn’t have to strain my eyes to read. Could you please give us a way to change it back to what it was or make it bigger so we don’t have to strain our eyes? Thanks.

I use Mozilla Firefox version 13.0.1 (yes I know it’s an old version) or Internet Explorer 9 & my operating system is Windows 7.
If it helps, I use a Toshiba Satellite laptop.
