All Quiet On the Western Font

21 Mar

As result of all the great feedback we have resolved most if not all of the font-sizing and jagged edged problems that plagued some users and especially those with Windows XP/Vista PCs.

We have also tweaked the default font-sizing to be 1 size smaller for most displays except for HD+ (1600×900 resolution or higher) monitors/laptops and this new setting appears to be the current happy medium.

For the devoted Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Comic Sans fans or anyone that like the idea of a font buffet, keep an eye out for another update later tonight.

Viva la fonts!

UPDATE: Our developers decided sleep deprivation was not too good for quality control and thus a decision has been made to suspend all pending feature pushes until tomorrow.  Devs are human too, sometimes.

I like the update, but with the update I didn’t get some alerts of a couple of updated. I had to go to Alerts of my accounts page.

Not a huge fan of the new homepage font, but now that the sizing is changed back, I can live with it. I find sifting through summaries a little more difficult with this font, though, as the letter seem to be thinner. However, I do appreciate the effort. On the other hand, I’m really glad you defaulted the story font back to Verdana. As someone who has been on the site for almost 10 years, I don’t think I read a story with anything else! I was freaking out when the font-changing wasn’t working following the update.

I’m wondering what’s going on with the user menu though. It used to work perfectly fine, but now when I click on a tab, the window automatically scrolls back to the top and it’s a little irritating to have to keep scrolling back down to actually click on the page after I’ve pressed a tab on the bottom of the menu. I’m using the latest version of Chrome and have no idea whether anyone else is having this problem. It’s not a huge deal, but I thought I’d bring it up.

    Thank you.

I have the same problem in my account area; whenever I click on something in the sidebar the thing expands and I’m back at the top of the page before I can even click on something. It’s extremely annoying (especially since my scroll thingy has been acting up lately) and has caused me to miss click numerous times already, which is very frustrating.

      I also use Chrome.

I’ve found where you change the fonts and also the size but it’s not working. If i make it go bigger it’s to big and making smaller is to small. There is really to big of a jump in size between the two. I have windows 7 and newest IE update

I prefer the Arial font. It is easier to read than the other three that is offered. The other three are too hard for me to read properly. Too hard on my eyes. I would like to have the Arial font back please.

There something wrong with my profile page, and it wasn’t happening yesterday. There are a bunch of areas underlined or double underlined when they shouldn’t be, and the bullet points aren’t aligned to the page as they were before. Right the now the bullet points are being dissected by the lines that border the profile pages. Can we get rid of them or return the profile to pre-update of whatever it is you’re doing? Please?

There also seems to be a problem with the polls. I just tried to edit my poll choices, but every time I click edit I get sent to the top of the page and the box where I edit the poll choice doesn’t show up. Please fix!

Sleep is good & should be indulged.

I notice that the resize option on the review box is not as useful as it used to be. You can expand the box vertically, but not so much horizontally.

Font seems better now, but some letters still look edgy (like the “m”, “M”, “V”, etc.)

Also, on a 15.6″ monitor (res. 1366×768), the font looks too small.

The font is also too narrow, IMO. Uncomfortable to read. Maybe it can get solved by increasing the size a bit, but still… the text looks clunky.

Nevertheless, I will probably use Stylish to make the site use Verdana everywhere.

This isn’t a font issue, but one I have is that on my stats pages (hits for stories and profile), while it displays the graphs and stories, I can’t sort the stories by anything other than title. They’re automatically listed alphabetically and I can’t sort them by most to least hits for example.

    Anyone else have this problem?

I think the new look is excellent. I’ve had absolutely no trouble with the font or brightness, it doesn’t hurt my eyes at all, and now that Xing has adjusted the size it looks really good on the screen and is very pleasant to read. Quite a bit better than the old format, actually; that did cause me some eyestrain.

The whole site has a streamlined, contemporary look about it. The links and menus are easy to use and I had absolutely no difficulty in finding the fav/follow buttons. Some users said Search wasn’t working for them; it must have been fixed, because I have been using it with no problems whatsoever.

My only quibble, which has been mentioned by a lot of others, is the inability to sort the Stats pages (and Favorites, I guess, for those who use it). But from the list of pending fixes on one of Xing’s earlier posts, I assume that is going to be addressed. Once that’s done, I won’t have anything to complain of.

Thank to Xing and the developers, for all your work and patience. I, for one, think you have done a splendid job.

    • bienfait

      03/23/2013 at 1:40 am

Scarlet Rose, you need to make this request by email, following the instructions on the Help page on (the link is at the bottom of most pages there).

It may take some time for your request to be actioned, but if you simply can’t wait, there is nothing to prevent you publishing your story and leaving the character field blank, until the new character comes through, and noting in your summary who the main character is. Then when the request is actioned, you can update your story to include him.

Best of luck with the story.

Hey, thanks for keeping on working on the font problem.

REQUEST – Could you make it so that it is easier to link to individual posts in forums? Sometimes you want to reference another post without quoting it, and it’d be easier to do that if the individual links for each post could be seen or accessed somehow.

Sigh. Yes, I know administrators have human needs and lives of their own like us. The reason why I’m still annoyed at the administrators is simply this:

Have there been any new updates since this part of the administrative announcement from March 21(three days ago in fact)?: “A decision has been made to suspend all pending feature pushes until tomorrow.” I don’t think there are. They could at least tell us of a revised version of how soon what things left will be fixed, which I for one could be more understanding over. Instead, the administrators of FFnet just want to leave us in the dark about it for some unnecessary reason.

And if I still come across as dumb or mean after explaining myself, then you’re entitled to think so.

        03/24/2013 at 3:50 pm

It’s actually not normal for site admins of any site to give a time frame of when they plan to have certain bugs fixed on any site because there is honestly no telling how long it will take to tweak the bugs. It’s pretty much going to vary each time even if their a similar bugs. The only way they can actually give a time frame is if they are having to deal with a bug that has occurred before in the past that is occurring for the same reason they did before. So to be honest I’ve always been bothered by the fact people make demands of knowing when things will be fixed because this shows a major amount of impatience on the part of the complainers.

Well… was this supposed to be ‘the big surprise’? 😦

Why are you permanently fixing things that DON’T need fixing? The site is worse now than it was. The huge filter boxes are fugly, and the hidden follow/fave box is illogical and irritating. The ‘font buffet’ is useless, as you can’t make your choice permanent – it’s necessary to change it again every time you visit the site.

One change I’d like to see is to make the filter settings permanent. So if I want to it to be All ratings, English, DAO, Zevran – al least for logged in users.

Also – there are still only 2 characters filters. All people I know check new stories they’d like to read via filters, and only use Search if they are searching for specific stories they’ve already read, or that someone had recommended to them. So I don’t see much the point of the ‘big change’ of 4 characters. In fact, most people I’ve talked with haven’t even noticed it yet.

Another change I’d like to see is FIX for statistics of communities. I receive alerts that people are following it, but in statistics it has 0 followers.

I agree with most of what you’ve said, but I would like to point out that you can simply bookmark/favorite (or whatever your browser calls it) the FFnet page once you’ve set the filters; that way you can simply use that bookmark to open FFnet and the filters will remain. I’ve done this for the last three years…

I don’t mind the new font, I really don’t though I *would* like the option to go back to the old font styling, like you guys promised we’d get an update for.

My main issue is that I have a HD+ (1600×900 resolution or higher) laptop, and the current font style/size is KILLING my eyes. And what’s worse in the dropdown menus for *anything* i.e. chapter select, character select, sorting story by review/publish date/update date select, the words in the dropdown box are only half visible. *Half*.

And I also know you guys said you’d fix this, and I *really* hope it hasn’t been forgotten, but I usually love reading with dark theme on, but when I try switching to white theme the ENTIRE page goes BLANK, and the only way to read the chapter is by highlighting in the blank spaces, to try to bring up the words.

I know you all are human too, so please rest up and then *please* update the fixes for font and styling for HD laptops/monitors, and please fix the dark theme…though the HD font issue is truly my biggest concern right now.

    Thank you.

I’m not sure if it’s a scheduled change, but the “Chapter” buttons on the stories are gray, not black, and hard to see. Same for the selection fields in each category. I’m also not a huge fan of the font size reduction. I am also only getting 2 characters in the Search field.

The ads next to the review box are…distracting. I can see they fit there in terms of space, but it’s now harder to concentrate on the actual review.

Also, is it possible to blank out the review box if a signed review was already submitted or the sender is blocked? It would be nice to know you can’t send a review before you type up the text.

    • Inuyashi12

      03/23/2013 at 4:41 pm

Well, people are generally blocked for a reason, so you shouldn’t be surprised. You obviously did something wrong. Plus, it is a major problem on your end if that many people are blocking you. I honestly can’t imagine many people having this problem, so I see no reason for an update like that. The admins should focus their attention on the needs of the majority.

But you are right about the ads by the review box. Many people have already complained about that. I’m sure they’re working on a fix. I hope it’s soon, because it really is distracting. However, I normally type my review out on word first then copy and paste it. Cheers.

  26. Briana

    03/23/2013 at 11:48 am

I’m not sure what is the need for a font buffet, especially if the type itself is better simply used as a display face more than anything. Not all type, (Comic Sans to be more specific) can be easily read as type such as Helvetica, Arial, and Georgia can be. I also think the point size for the full site is a step too small, while the kerning is too wide. My eyes tend to take more time in reading the text across the screen when I could already be zooming through the site if it were still at the size it was before. The point size before does no justice for screens of a wider dimension, making it further difficult to read such. I guess I could turn up the zoom percentage on my laptop, but I wouldn’t need to if the type worked for users with small and wide monitors. My laptop is at 1366 x 768 resolution and I still have trouble reading the text.

I know you guys want to make changes that will try to fit to everyone’s need, however I felt the drop in point size could’ve at least been lowered by half a step. I also feel you guys are making changes, such as layouts that are not nearly as important than the need of the dictionary and thesaurus again. This is a site that excels at letting one’s imagination to grow, but I think it would let those ideas grow even more if the two gestures were at the tip of our fingers like they once were. I think it’s hassle going back and forth between an electronic or even hand-held dictionary when there could be one on the site. I emailed the site of this to the site twice and have not gotten a response yet. I love how you guys are trying to make everyone happy, but I think it would be awesome if you guys focused less on the layout and more on what one needs to grow on your sites as a better author. Thank you for your time.

Okay, I’ve just about had it now. I just took a more thorough look at the site and have come across even more issues, most of them related to the darn font changes! For one, the standard size in-story cannot be made smaller only bigger (and then smaller, back to the default setting which is too large) and there’s no difference between sans-serif and arial.

But that’s not even the worst part. When I go into my account area not only is everything too bright/white and too large (and girly/childish), but when I go to the story managing area I nearly had a stroke when I accidentally clicked on ‘download’ and got a completely different font! Then I quickly backspaced and clicked on ‘live preview’, which I use a lot when editing/uploading a story and it’s yet ANOTHER font! The page is also completely white, which is very off-putting and there’s too much spacing between the lines. After five minutes of squinting and straining my eyes I managed to be able to somewhat read through the page, only to get another brain shock when I changed tabs to the regular FFnet site and my gmail.

You are using too many different fonts that not only make reading or working on FFnet less than a nice experience, but it also interferes with any other tabs that I have open at any given time since the rest of the internet uses sensible fonts and yours clashes with them, which results in a giant headache and momentary inability to focus (not to mention the black spots in my eyes).

Please fix the mess you’ve made.

The breakdown by country graph still isn’t showing (there’s absolutely nothing) when you look at the stats per chapter.

      03/23/2013 at 7:18 pm

I’m sure they’re doing all they can to fix the bugs that came with the update. It’s not something that’s going to happen over night, though, or even within a couple of days. These fixes take a lot of time because of the coding. I would suggest going to “view” and selecting “source” on your browser when you’re on FF’s homepage. That page of html is only for the homepage. It’s just the beginning. Imagine all of the other pages they have to work through.

We talk about eye-strain with the fonts… the eye-strain for coding has to be at least ten times worse.

Just be patient. The bugs will be fixed in due time.

      • fems

        03/23/2013 at 8:00 pm

Perhaps they should have thought about that before implementing work that’s obviously half done. Or oh, I don’t know, hired some beta testers instead of subjecting the entire site and all its users to a bad update.

And yes, I’m aware of how much coding that takes. Funny thing is, the font of the coding is actually quite pleasant to the eyes, as is the size. Much better than the font that’s now over the entire website.

      • yemi hikari

        03/23/2013 at 8:32 pm

Yes… the site admins should never have implemented an update that they need impute and feedback in order to finish the second half. They’re also going to spend money to hire beta testers using money that they could use towards other things. That makes a lot of sense.

      • fishtank

        03/24/2013 at 2:55 am

To be fair, not everyone hated the new updates. Some people liked the changes and didn’t experience the dreaded “eyestrain.” There were many people thankful for the larger font. If you read through the negative comments, you will see that plenty of people said “oh, you just hate change. I love the updates!” It’s hard having an update to appease everyone. Sadly, it will never happen. I still look forward to what is to come.

It’s strange, but I have not experienced any of the bugs that other people complained about. I guess I am just lucky. I would complain, too, if I were having the problems everyone else is having. I really like this site and couldn’t stand it if I had to be away for even a day!

      • yemi hikari

        03/24/2013 at 3:43 pm

I actually haven’t experienced any of the bugs other people have had, but I have noticed that the look they came out with did look better as the site admins tweeked it more, so some people are going to be more sensitive to certain things. Still… you’re right in saying you can’t please everybody.

I’m still having issues with the dark theme. I can see the words of the story, but the top and bottom (where the summary and author information is at the top and the review alert buttons on the bottom) are greyed out and need to be highlighted to be read.

I very much prefer reading white font on black background, so I hope it’s still something that is intending to be resolved. I can be patient in the meantime, just want to make sure it hasn’t been forgotten!

P.S. I use Google Chrome on a Windows 7 laptop if that matters in the resolving of this issue.

I’m having a few problems on my IPod Touch, iOS 6.1.3. I use the regular site version over the mobile.

    – When I change to the light theme in a story, the text disappears.
    – Summary text above each story is black on dark theme.
    – Story summaries and information fonts are very small, while searching and above the actual story.
-In the narrow results section, the titles for each category disappeared.
    – Clicking on a cover photo, it does not show the enlarged version.

That’s all the problems I’ve encountered so far. I hope these can be fixed.

It would be nice if documents that are uploaded that the site could recognize more than one font that is being used in a document. For instance, I am writing a story where someone gets a letter in code. The code uses symbols like Wingdings, specifically Wingdings 3, which are various arrow symbols. It would be cool of that font would be able to be recognized and seen in the posts so when the story is told, the readers might even get into the story more and want to solve the code to see what the letter is saying. I’ve used simple letter substitution in other stories such as X=A, Y=B, Z=C. All you have to do is shift the alphabet so you get the right code, but after a time, it’s not all that interesting to see on the screen. Being able to use symbols to create a code and have it recognized as a legitimate font would be really cool.

    Fix it!

Maybe that’s FFnet’s subtle way of telling you you put too much crap on your profile. All those lists, questionnaires and copy/paste “bold what applies to you” stuff should be forbidden. It’s annoying and gives a bad impression to readers checking you out.

Usability of FF site for colour blindness: I didn’t know where to post this, so doing it here. Please forgive me if it’s the wrong place. As a person with a certain degree of colour-blindness, I find it really difficult to distinguish the colour of followed and un-followed Fanfiction title links in the list of fictions. So this is an issue of usability. I don’t want to override site colours in my browser because that messes up the general look and feel of a site. Followed sites in RED (and un-followed in BLUE), for example, would be much more usable for us colour-blind people. Can anyone please tell me how I can lobby for such a change?

The changes made are all horrible I actually got a fright when I brought up the website, I closed it and opened it again thinking it was some kind of mistake. The whole new theme Fanfiction has is dull and unappealing, the selections at the top are now less convenient to access and the search option was better the way it was. The new method of arranging your favourite stories is annoying, before you just clicked once and it arranged how you wanted. That was a really handy feature that helped me to find the story or author I wanted quickly. I don’t know if the increased size of the selection boxes was meant to be helpful but it isn’t, its unnecessary and unpleasant to look at. The log in screen looks bleak and dull, it actually puts me off accessing my account. The only good thing is that you now have four character selection slots when posting a story. Please put the site back the way it was, the way everyone liked it.

Is it possible to revert back to the previous theme? EVERY TIME I load a page, be it an author’s profile, the next page of a category, REFRESH, it blanks out before loading properly. I’m finding that quite annoying and an eye sore. The theme’s acting like a Flash or Java-based site on the “blank, then load” thing. If we talk by “normal loading”, the items load one right have the other, from top to bottom. Tried it on both of my computers, same thing. And one is a newer computer, at that.

If I have to take a video of it happening to show what I mean, I will.

Yes, I noticed that earlier today as well, once when I clicked a link to a story and once when I opened the story overview (via bookmark, so both of them were new tabs). It’s extremely annoying and I did a double-take both times.

      I’m using Chrome, though.

What about this petition about Deleting signed reviews that has been going on for FIVE YEARS! The outbox you still can’t delete conversations and to block anonymous reviews was taken away. I mean FIM Fiction is a year old and has ALL of these features and this site still has not made the updates that people want. Come on FIVE YEARS and still nothing, instead of “fixing” the small thing fix or update what people really want.

Wingman Master, the reason signed reviews can only be removed by the mods is because there are certain writers who will delete anything that isn’t gushing praise. That is not what these sites are about, honest critical review (as long as it’s not abusive) must be allowed to stand.

Anyone who can’t stand a little honest adverse criticism has no business putting their work into a public space.

It would be nice if abuse reports were actioned faster, but allowing the deletion of reviews at will by the author would be a step into the realms of dishonesty which would devalue every story and every review given on both sites.

What about this issue that has been sitting here for almost FIVE YEARS!
You are fixing small things that did not need fixing instead of fixing huge things that have be stated but never looked at. The outbox does not delete messages, we can’t delete signed reviews, and we can’t block anonymous reviews. These are the huge things that need to be looked at and this is what most people want in this site. The power to remove a review if it’s harsh or insulting and not wait for the admins to maybe delete it. This is just a suggestion so the site can be a little more flexible.

I don’t know if it’s dependent upon the fandom or maybe it’s got something to do with the author, but I’ve never seen any real flames/insults etc. on any of my stories or the stories I read. I don’t think it’s wise to give an author the option to delete (signed) reviews made on their stories because any touchy-feely person could then remove all the reviews that mention even one slightly negative thing. Thereby not only removing something someone (the reviewer) has thought long and hard about and put much effort into, but also distorting the view people (who have read and reviewed) have of the work.

I often read the reviews of a story first if I’m not convinced by the summary, title and/or author’s name to give me an idea of what to expect. If everyone starts deleting the reviews that don’t praise their god given writing talents and praises them on their bare knees, then the reviews don’t reflect the general reader opinion anymore. There are already far too many mindless people who praise badly written stories like it’s worthy of a million $$$ contract with a renowned publishing firm (Fifty Shades anyone?) that we really don’t need certain ‘authors’ (and I use the word loosely here) to have the power to remove reviews with (constructive) criticism.

If you’re going to publish/share/upload a story you’ve written then you should expect people to give you all kinds of feedback and/or criticism, and learn how to accept and handle the good and bad ones. Sometimes there might be crazies or online bullies who feel the need to put others down but, in my opinion, overall the review system works. You can report the crazies and bullies and let TPTB handle them. However, if you’re gonna cry about every “mean” review then maybe you should simply disable the review function and stay sheltered in your own little bubble.

I know your comment is old, but well said. Real flames rarely if ever happen and if the option were to be allowed it would be a lot of legit reviews that got deleted.

@guest – There could be something odd going on. I had five reviews for a new chapter today, but only four email alerts, and the missing one wasn’t diverted to the spam folder, so goodness knows where it is.

Have you checked your alert settings? Your email might have accidentally marked some things as spam, and you alert settings automatically get turned off when that happens.

96 Hours & Nothing to report? I grow less amused with this troubling time for FanFiction.Net I also have to wonder at the minuscule size of their tech department for to continue do you folks have an ETA? on anything that’s pending?
