I know what you mean, mine is doing the same. It’s really annoying.

Cannot change font size or font. I cannot read the stories with the font too small.

Even with IE 8 on XP you cannot change the font. Also font size on IE 8 works, except when you go to another chapter or story the font does not stay. It gets smaller.

Stop messing with the fonts. They are great the way it is.

I’m with you, everything is fine the way it is but they keep changing it.

NEW IDEA! Along with the 4 character filters, there should be a “And/Or” filter. IE, If i were to select Character A, Character D, Character H, and Character P, and select “Or” I would get the archive with all the stories that have any of those characters in the filters.

      That’s actually a good idea.

    Awesome, thanks.

Would there be anyway to do some kind of spoiler filter? For example, I am a big Vampire Diaries fan, but I haven’t been able to watch Season Four yet. It’d be awesome if I could put something in to only see fics that reference through Season 3, that way I could read fics since I can’t watch the show right now without worrying about spoilers. I understand that it may be difficult, especially since it requires authors to keep their spoiler tags updated, but it’d help me out a lot.

      03/26/2013 at 3:43 am

I’d rather the site admins didn’t add a spoiler tag feature. While it is the job of the writer to add spoiler warnings for people who are current with a show and may not have seen the latest episode, it is not their job to warn people who are not current with the show that there may be spoilers for stuff they have not seen. It is not the writers fault that the person isn’t current with the show. It would just be one big headache for the writers to worry about that they honestly shouldn’t have to.

My font size changed in the middle of reading a page. I can’t adjust the size. I really can’t see the words. What is up with this site? I can’t even get into the support page. And where is the search button to launch a search?

I’ve tried to use the Palatino font as that’s my preferred local font for my writings. But, sadly, the choise is not sticking in my Firefox 19.0.2 and as I use Windows, Palantino Linotype is one of the included fonts, so, the choice should be sticking throughout the site, correct?

  8. souther-reader

    03/25/2013 at 5:59 pm

Well yet again the people writing code are dumbasses.
I can’t change the font size and I can’t read it at it’s current size.
Do you people have nothing better to do??????

    • bienfait

      03/25/2013 at 6:43 pm

@souther-reader – I understand that you are frustrated, but there is no need to stoop to personal abuse. Can you not state your concerns with common civility?

    • TheAnnoyingVoice

      03/25/2013 at 6:52 pm

That’s actually not a very nice way to express yourself. Calling people names is rather childish. They’ve been doing their best to work out all of the bugs in this update, so asking if they “have nothing better to do” is kind of redundant.

I would suggest you tell them your browser, os, and screen resolution, as it may be something they need to fix in order to be compatiable with your browser, operating system, etc.

    Quick question.

The way the summary is displayed in a Story with the dark theme is the final version?

I liked the way it was before more. With everything dark except the summary.

The font cocktail is definitely a brilliant compromise. Thank you very much for implementing it. I’m quite serious about one of my earlier comments: don’t hesitate to take that vacation. Even if it’s just for a few days. You deserve it, Xing and team.

The Palatino Font that was just added is somewhat similar to Segoe UI when I reduce the font size slightly…at least in my browser. (It’s easier on my eyes than the others.) Thank you!!

  17. Gagin

    03/25/2013 at 6:21 pm

I just noticed that now we can actually make the text smaller on stories!!! So glad that tears are coming to my eyes, this is what I’ve wanted from this website from months, so happy that now we can set the font to be as small as we want!

Thanks to this, now we can use ctrl+mouse wheel to make the borders disappear and read in full page in a legible font. Oh god I’m so happy that my grammar has gone away! Literally crying

Thank you so so so much for this update. Honestly the only way this could get better would be being able to set the font size on the site (not the fanfics) when browsing the archive. But even then we can do that now, it’s just a matter of resizing the page to one’s liking (though I wonder if that works on tablets or if it’s a computer-only thing).

    03/25/2013 at 6:33 pm

Look, I know that you’re trying to help, but if it isn’t broken, please don’t fix it. The font styles and options were perfectly functional before, and now they are buggy as all hell and driving me, and I’m sure others, crazy. Please undo this particular update and leave it be.

    • yemi hikari

      03/26/2013 at 3:56 am

Funny how most people are now happy with the update. I think it is a wonderful edition because people can pick a font that best suits them and more people are happy rather then just the few that were pleased previously.

    03/25/2013 at 6:36 pm

    I stopped getting review alerts.

Also my new desktop computer has a huge screen. Can you make a reading mode even more narrow than 1/2? Like 1/4, for people with those new huge all-in-one computer screens?

I’m not having any problems with the fonts, but I know for sure I miss the dark setting. I get a headache when the background is white, I miss being able to put it down as black. Do you think you could put that back in?

  22. Andrew

    03/25/2013 at 6:57 pm

hey thanks for messing that was just fine the way it was because now the next/previous chapter buttons no longer work, nor do the font size or type optians and nor longer does the contrast, spacing, or width and when looking for a story the go button for filtering stories no longer works, frankly if you were gonna mess with the site you should have just added an MA rating selection that requires the viewer to have an account and be 18 to view an let that be it and left everything else alone

    • bienfait

      03/25/2013 at 7:19 pm

@Andrew – all of those things are working for me. You could help isolate the problem by giving Xing your OS and browser details, so they can track down and fix the problems.

  23. FtDLulz

    03/25/2013 at 7:01 pm

    i have firefox 19.0.2, windows xp sp3.

i’m only getting two or three different fonts (one serif font and two sans serif). that is, when i select droid, pt sans, roboto, and times new roman, i just keep getting the same serif font that i get for palantino and georgia. is this dependant on what fonts i have installed on my system? only the font name shows the preview of the font correctly, as far as i can tell.

    • bloodsong

      03/25/2013 at 7:03 pm

PS: can you put the divisions between reviews back? they’re all blending together with no lines between them. it looks like some might be slightly darker background than others, but it isn’t contrasted enough.

    • Xing

      03/25/2013 at 7:05 pm

Non-system fonts are not available to XP machines due to problems with XP and the rendering of modern web-fonts.

  25. Andrew

    03/25/2013 at 7:09 pm

pardon what i said about messing with the font, somehow my javascript got shut off, i got it fixed and everything is working correctly again, though i do think you should have an MA rating selection added that requires the viewer the to have an account and be 18 to view a MA rated story

    • MMC

      03/25/2013 at 7:24 pm

It’s been a little more than 10 years since they banned MA fics on the site. Pretty sure FFN isn’t going to change that any time soon…

    • Pumpkin

      03/25/2013 at 8:46 pm

No. I liked FFnet the way it is now anyhow with the current restrictions on rating.

AAndrew – As long as there is an effective screening process to keep underage readers out – and it needs to be 100% effective, children are remarkably good at getting into places they shouldn’t – this suggestion may have some merit. I’m not particularly interested in MA material; I did have a look once, but the stories I tried to read used shock value and self indulgence as a substitute for competent writing, so I gave up in despair. But seeing as a lot of users are requesting access to MA, and don’t seem inclined to make do with the alternative sites that offer it, it’s at least worth consideration.

    • yemi hikari

      03/26/2013 at 4:06 am

The problem is kids can easily lie about their age online just to read the more explicit stuff.

      • bienfait

        03/26/2013 at 3:31 pm

@yemi hikari – therein lies the problem. It would, as I said, need to be 100% effective. Personally I don’t have a clue how that could be done, so those advocates for MA need to do some serious thinking about it and come up with a workable solution, before any change can be seriously considered.

If they’re not sufficiently motivated to do so, then they haven’t really got a leg to stand on.

I have no issue with the sizes but I’m now not getting any of my reviews sent to my email or any new chapter updates though I still get story alerts and favs sent. This seems to have started a few hours ago.

Very nice. This update should please most users since they can now change the font to the style most pleasing to their eyes. I have been playing with the different fonts, but will continue to use the default of Open Sans. It looks terrific.

    Great job! 🙂

  30. Down the Rabbit Hole

    03/25/2013 at 7:41 pm

Can you add an “OC” character option in the character listing for all fandoms? Because so many of us OC lovers have to weed through endless canon fics and an OC option would truly help that. I do realize that there are communities that attempt to solve that problem, but for the fandoms I like the communities are dated and so most stories are from 2010 and not completed.

An OC character choice would be the best thing to happen for some of us. Just saying.

    Thank you.

The story summary is now visible on the dark theme in white text! The links to the author bio, story reviews, and the story’s media location over the summary bar are also in white. The blue links are in the light theme, however, was unreadable on the dark theme, so maybe a light blue?

I feel bad nitpicking over this, because you guys are getting so much stuff rolled out. I love the font chooser and hope to see the options expanded some day. Thanks for all the hard work!

  32. Kamja

    03/25/2013 at 7:47 pm

The fonts are great already, so you should stop there ;>. How do we stand on disappearing table columns for favourite/follow pages? It’s irritating.

  33. Josh

    03/25/2013 at 7:48 pm

Increasing the font size isn’t working properly for me – I’m having to do it on each individual chapter I view when using internet explorer (win7 with ie8). Seems to work ok if I use a different browser but would be more convenient if it was fixed to work regardless. Don’t know if anyone else is having similar problems.

Above, FtDLulz said “One problem: When changing to the dark setting, and going to Follow/Favorite, you can’t see the +Follow or +Fav unless you highlight them.” (In the pop-up window, text does not show up, only the selection boxes).

I have the same issue, but with IE9, Windows 7.

  38. Conrad

    03/25/2013 at 8:00 pm

That Favorite/Follow button give a square with I would suppose is white letters on a white background making it difficult to see what’s selected So I’m also thankful that the dark theme is more itself as of late.

    03/25/2013 at 8:13 pm

    My. God.
Thank you very much for this update, it set everything right!
Well, almost everything actually. I liked the summary space on the stories’ pages (with the dark background option on) white with black letters… I would like for that to come back, BUT, if it isn’t, I’m still really happy with what the team did now!
I admit a few days ago I thought this whole update was shi*. It was not needed, nor wanted, as I said, but I will humbly say that I changed my opinion with all these new fixes. It is, without a doubt, THE BEST update from the last times!
Thank you fanfiction team! I hope you leave the layout like this for a while and continue to listen to our sugestions!
    You guys are the best!

    • yemi hikari

      03/26/2013 at 4:07 am

They’re not going to be changing it back as they’ve come up with a solution that pleases most people. They make more adjustments to fine tune the thing, but the new look is here to stay.

  46. Angie

    03/25/2013 at 10:44 pm

Whenever I go to favorite/follow an author or story, the follow box under story is already checked and I think it would get annoying to uncheck it every time you just want to favorite if it’s already complete or any other reason. Could you change that?

  47. Dataz

    03/25/2013 at 11:00 pm

This is lovely! What wonderful update! Thank you! 😀

I do want to make a point about the story information in dark mode. I think you guys are still tweeking it, and I remember seeing everyone was up in arms with the gray text for characters, genre, and date information and whatnot – so it all looks white. Which doesn’t help separate it from the summary like in light mode. Maybe putting the thin line break between the summary and story info back would work… there used to be a line, right? I remember a line.

But more importantly, thanks for the font update!!

    • Dataz

      03/25/2013 at 11:25 pm

There was never a line between summary and info. And it would look ugly. A line is for separating different things… The summary and info belong to the same story.

I think they should space the summary and info, give the divs some padding to bottom/top.

Not agreed. It would take even more space, which isn’t something that can be afforded for those (I’d like to say the majority but I’m not sure) that don’t have immensely tall screens.
If the page looks too cramped, ctrl+mouse wheel lets you widen the space between things.
