Fontastic 2: Operation Eye Saver

31 Mar

We are introducing an experimental new texture (background) option for our Fontastic Panel in “Reading” mode. Only applicable to story reading pages and only with the default  dark-on-light  theme. This new addition is subject to drastic changes and thus the experimental tag.

With 8 different paper like textures to choose from, readers that love the default dark-on-light reading them can now chose the best text to background contrast to reduce eyestrain from extended reading.

Try it out and send us your feedback.

Interesting. I’m personally not a fan of textured backgrounds but the feature works well = )

Where is the option for these textured backgrounds? I’m not seeing it.

Go to any story and hit the AA icon below the story heading.

Oh, okay. I see it now. Thanks for responding so quickly.

I definitely find the textured backgrounds to be much easier on my eyes.

I’m going to say some of the textures are similar in color, but it does cause a subtle change in the colors. The only one I’m not fond of is the forth one as it seems overly pale and to close to white.

Good. Now I won’t get eyestrain from reading.

Love this update. Options two and seven made reading easist for me; currently have default on two. I agree with the above commenter that four doesn’t make much of a difference.

    03/31/2013 at 8:07 pm

Ooh, I like it, especially the seventh choice! Although I do agree that some choices look the same as others. Could I suggest using some colors like pastel greens and pinks?

    • Spyridon

      03/31/2013 at 10:28 pm

I agree. The seventh choice feels the best so far. 😀

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 1:02 am

I love the seventh choice as well, but I didn’t say anything because some people may not like having as dark of an option. I agree with having a pastel green and pink, as well as a yellow tan color as those are the colors that are supposed to help people with dyslexia read easier other then the ones already put into place.

  9. True Blackout

    03/31/2013 at 8:41 pm

Hmm, this could be a nice change for those of us who tend to spend hours at a time reading fanfiction. Staring at a white screen for too long (or even a black screen for too long — sometimes it can cause a real weird experience with your eyes after extended reading) can really make your eyes feel strained.

I found a texture I think I can get used to — not too dark, and lessening the sharp contrast between black and white just enough. Thank y’all so much for this option. =)

    03/31/2013 at 10:00 pm

I like this feature. My screen brightness only adjusts in increments instead of a genuinely sliding scale, so it’s permanently a little brighter than I’d like–which makes the background texture helpful. As others have noted, #7 is great. (Actually, most of the other, lighter textures are hard for me to see much at all–but that may also be due to my screen’s over-brightness.)

  11. DestinyCrusader

    03/31/2013 at 10:02 pm

They’re pretty neat. But could we have some more darker textures for people who like reading in black? There’s only one texture that comes slightly close, and it would be nice to have something similar but not pitch black. Thanks again for all your hard work! Loving the site 🙂

  12. Asj

    03/31/2013 at 10:26 pm

I kind of like the plain background myself, and I’ve only ever felt odd when trying to read white on black anywhere (maybe I’m just weird?). Though, I might try the textured things.

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 1:03 am

Some people do better or just fine with the white and black, but others it does help to have various shades. It’s known to help children with dyslexia read better.

      • Asj

        04/02/2013 at 11:00 pm

        that’s kind of interesting.

    03/31/2013 at 10:59 pm

One other thing, completely unrelated. Would you ever consider giving users the option to NOT view story covers/profile pics on story listing pages?

This is something I would sincerely appreciate. I do not enjoy coming across even thumbnail pics that feature, for example, certain types of pairings I don’t like (to the extent that I’m less willing to browse category listings because of it). I’d rather have the ability to just remove covers from my pageviews altogether. I have layout customizations that screen out commenters’ icons on AO3 and Dreamwidth, so it seems to me that disabling pics should be possible here too.

      03/31/2013 at 11:43 pm

As soon as they came out, I added a Stylish rule on FFNet: .cimage { display: none !important; } And bye-bye cover images! 🙂

      • Jordanna

        04/01/2013 at 4:02 am

I don’t know what that is… but since I primarily use IE, I suspect it’s one of those useful add-ons for other browsers that isn’t available to me. :/

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 1:04 am

Yes please. I enjoy the covers, but some people are more sensitive to the pictures for various reasons.

    • Shaveza

      04/05/2013 at 11:16 am

I’m with you on this, but I dislike having to sort through stories types of pairings I don’t like with or without the cover images. Some areas are so inundated by certain types that I avoid areas of the site I’d rather visit.

The option to sort by character is very limited in potential for filtering, because all too often I’m interested in stories revolving around one character. There’s also the fact that I don’t care to read anything where romance is the predominant genre and focuse of the story. Far too often I am out of luck. I can’t sort stories by what genres I -don’t- want to view after all.

What I’d like to see is a “Pairing” sorting option where the options are: ‘Hetero’, ‘Yaoi’, ‘Yuri’, and ‘None’. Something to that effect.

  17. Mali

    03/31/2013 at 11:54 pm

I think it’s a wonderful addition. I prefer the 2nd to last one. And I must say, my eyes felt very different when I started reading. Very nice.

  18. Cassie1234

    04/01/2013 at 12:06 am

Great option! I use dark theme all the time because white background strains my eyes, but even that sometimes the contrasting white-text-on-black hurts. Now I have more options! Thank you!

One question, though. This is not available on mobile site, is it?

  19. yemi hikari

    04/01/2013 at 1:06 am

No, it isn’t available on the mobile site. It honestly would be bad to at least add the black and white and a couple of grays.

Thanks for the great work. It was needed. This definitely helps. I would like to ask about the Author note feature. Is it still in works?
I’d really like a way to be able to answer questions from my readers without overwhelming my stories chapters or my profile. Please, pretty please…
Again thank you for the new feature.

    • LS

      04/02/2013 at 8:01 am

Ooh! I remember the possibility of the AN feature—that’d be nice to have. Even a simple “show/hide” tag like what’s used for profiles would be enough for me. I’d be all over that. Please?

Anyway, the textures are nice. Normally I’m perfectly okay with the light-on-dark, but I do appreciate the extra options, if only for a change of pace. I’m going to fling myself on the bandwagon and say that texture #7 is probably my favorite.

      • yemi hikari

        04/02/2013 at 9:44 pm

Except we don’t know if the “note” system is a way in which to make author’s note separate from the stories or if it is an attempt to actually allow footnotes for stories.

      • Klaus Schilling

        09/13/2013 at 2:44 am

My stories are full of numbered footnotes, with or without an extra author’s notes feature.

I already have my computer files defaulted to blue because of eye strain causing migranes. I’m certainly liking this update but would it be possible to include a choice of color potentially (common colors are blue, purple, green, yellow and pink to my knowledge)? I ended up just having to pick the darkest option because it was the closest to what I normally use.
I’m not complaining, just asking 🙂

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 2:44 pm

I’m going to add that they mean pastel versions of these colors, not the true color you would find on a color wheel.

  25. fems

    04/01/2013 at 12:11 pm

I would prefer a plain beige/off-white one or just something that’s not quite as white as the standard background. In the previews most of these look okay but once I’ve saved them it appears as if my screen is dirty because of the random smudges and spots on some of them. And no, it’s not my actual screen that’s dirty because I clean it quite regularly and if you put the cursor over said smudges/spots you can see it clearly as it covers part of the smudge/spot.

Once this has been tested and approved it would be really great if it was applicable to everywhere on the site, rather than just in-story since some of the account area is still very white/bright.

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 2:45 pm

I’m actually agreeing that it should be applied to the entire site.

I hate the be the Negative Nancy in the light of good news, but the option for “Arial” font in the stories isn’t working right. It won’t change over to it whenever I press it as an option.

    • yemi hikari

      04/01/2013 at 2:46 pm

Letting them know something isn’t functioning like it should isn’t being a Negative Nancy.

Quick unrelated question, but what happened to the strikethrough option in the forums? Other than that, the new feature is great though!

    04/01/2013 at 2:51 pm

I hope that amid all the improvements, you might consider bringing back the ‘review window in a separate tab’. Switching between the review and the story was much easier when scrolling was not the only way to navigate the complexities of quoting and writing.

    • Spyridon

      04/01/2013 at 3:53 pm

YES, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! It’s been annoying that I have to open another tab with the chapters so I can go up and down and write the review, especially if that author posted multiple chapters in one go.

    • LS

      04/02/2013 at 3:11 am

Actually, I’d like both, if it’s possible. With the review window embedded in the page, the simpler and shorter reviews are easier and faster to fire off. I love that, and I don’t want it to go away.

However, if I want to write a longer review, having to scroll up and down constantly is time-consuming and on rare occasions has induced mild nausea during particularly long chapters; I have to stop reviewing, do something else, come back, and read what I already wrote to remember what I was trying to address, then finish up. I don’t love that quite as much. So both options would really be stellar—I wouldn’t mind having to press a button to write a longer review, since I’d already be taking the time anyway.

Use the mobile review system, it doesn’t have the inline review function, so basically you ARE getting the function to have both options now 😛
Go to: ‘’ find a story, you will see at the bottom there is a button that says ‘Review’, press that
Also you can just find a story through the normal site, then change the ‘www.’ to ‘m.’

It’s not just that. For some reason when I hit “save” on any of my documents it’s doing exactly that. It puts these odd spaces in between words. This just started happening in the last half hour. You might have a larger issue here.

      • SCJen

        04/01/2013 at 5:29 pm

That isn’t the only problem. When I hit save in a document it puts spaces into words for no apparent reason. This just started happening in the last half hour. You might have a larger issue here.

This is absolutely brilliant! I’ve been hoping for a feature like this ever since I started reading fanfiction. It really does put less of a strain on the eyes, and that means I can actually focus on the reading than on the display. I hope they keep this feature.

In the stories it’s on the same line as the chapter index next to the A- (it’s the double A’s symbols). Select the font you want then below that you’ll see reading texture. they look shades of gray and white.
