Services Slowed by Network Attack

06 Apr

Please note our network is currently being targeted with a sizable network attack.

Majority of site features are working as normal but some are operating in degraded mode. We are currently working with our network provider to resolve this external problem.

Problems due to ongoing attack:

  • Email Alert Delivery. We have currently disabled email delivery to prevent any lost mails in transit.
  • Network Logins.
  • Page might be loading slower than normal.

We will update throughout the day as more info comes out.

UPDATED (2:13PM US Pacific Time): Attack has stopped (lasted 1 hour and 5 minutes) and all services have returned to normal. We will not sit quietly on this and will find the source of this attack to prevent future incidents.

I’d like to note that my replies in the site as well as everyone else’s are having to wait much much longer than five seconds and sometimes when we reply it told us we posted too soon even if it was done an hour later!!!!

Also when PMing it causes all our windows to have to reload and they get reorganized for some reason. This will happen when we’re just looking at a PM like we were about to reply within seconds or at most a little less than a minute.

Please someone try to fix this???????????????

I’m quite sure their dad doesn’t have a problem with them reading. I think the issue is them reading and writing fanfiction. Many people still look down on fanfiction writing and don’t consider it legit.

I can understand a parent not wanting a younger kid on this site. I won’t tell my nieces & nephews about it, and anyway, I’m pretty sure my sister has it locked away from the 15+ younger set under the Parental Controls filter.

There’s way too much slash rated K+ on fandoms like Man from U.N.C.L.E., Magnificent Seven, and The Sentinel, not to mention all the incest on Thunderbirds and Hardy Boys.

I still don’t understand the rationale against 2nd person writing, however. I’m sure there is a perfectly good reason, I just wish someone would spell it out.

      • yemi hikari

        04/20/2013 at 9:42 pm

@ cathy massey – The purpose of second person narrative is to insert the reader into the story as a character. It doesn’t matter if the “you” in the story is a canon character or the reader realizes they aren’t really the “you”, the point is to still make the reader “feel” like they are a character. This is why second person narrative is considered to be interactive while the other two narratives are not. The purpose of the other two isn’t to insert the reader directly into the story.

Personally, I always get rolled eyes and dirty looks from the parents no matter what I happen to be reading at the time, even if I’m well over 18 or if I read K rated entries. The reputation has preceded the material. People outside the fiction world don’t count fanfiction as regular reading. If I’m reading a story on ff, I’m much more likely to get interrupted, dismissed, or reprimanded than if I have a book in my hand, and the content is often far more innocent than some of my paperbacks. Whoops, sorry, went on a mini-rant in reply to a post that’s several months old.

Yeah, my folks too… They’re convinced FFN isn’t legit. (Like, FF and fanart don’t count as REAL writing and drawing, or something.) It’s not so much that they think I’m reading sketchy stuff- they just want me to study instead.

Not exactly a site attack, but I remember once a number of years ago, when someone posted a truckload of spam fics and posts with the same text over and over and over again. I forget exactly (faulty memory) what he said but it was something like: I AM TEH SPAMMIN TEH FANFICTION.NETZ. I believe his trolling was handily dealt with.

    • yemi hikari

      04/06/2013 at 9:51 pm

How about anybody whose lost their account because they broke the site rules and believe that they were thus censored despite the fact the rules are very clearly spelled out in the guidelines people have to agree to before they post a story.

      • Sweetie

        04/06/2013 at 11:21 pm

Nope. They still have their id numbers, so their account is never technically “lost.” They just have to create new ones in order to log in and post more stories!!!!

To be fair, some of the guidelines are subjective. What’s rated ‘M’ for someone might be different for someone else. But plagiarism, real people, etc… that is clearly spelt out.

      • yemi hikari

        04/07/2013 at 12:23 am

@ Sweetie – True. You would think if they had the skill to hack they wouldn’t have to worry about their account being banned. They may still be wanting to send a message that they don’t agree with the rules though, but what will that get them.

I also agree with what you said about what is or isn’t M. I know of one person who tried claiming that M rated stories couldn’t contain any “adult language, themes and suggestions”. Which defeats the point of having the M rating in the first place.

    • brendan2k5

      04/06/2013 at 8:49 pm

The two who said “Who would attack FFN?” MUST be ignorant of the criticism directed at FFn’s Staff through this blog’s comments since it opened last June.

I can think of alot of reasons WHY someone would target FFn for a cyber attack. It goes without saying whoever is responsible will strike again if the attack only lasted an hour and the only change was a slowed page load.

Given I have been pretty vocal of my contempt for the site’s obstinate leadership style that I consider to have played a signicant role in the site being targeted by hackers, let me state publicly I am not responsible for the attack, nor do I know who is.

Call me whatever you want but I don’t feel pity towards the site staff over today’s attack, more so since they appear to have been testing the site’s defenses. Considering some of the more…”colorful” comments I’ve been reading over at AO3 and TWCS (as well as several forums on FP and FFn) regarding the attack you can be damned sure I’m not alone in wishing “Karma” on FFn/ for alot of the stuff that has and continues to be allowed to happen on both sites.

In the long term, unlike apparently most of the people who use FP and FFn to pist stories I have a hard copy of ALL of my stuff on both sites so if they were to go offline I can just re-upload elsewhere. As I said in a previous posting, AO3 and TWCS exist because authors are able to do things there FFn/FP refuses to do. I’m not gonna repeat stuff verbatim but I wasn’t the only one who brought that up.

I went a bit on a tangent there but I do have my own WordPress Blogs. Unlike alot of folks who use the internet I don’t post “anonymously”.

      • Jiou

        04/06/2013 at 10:35 pm

Even though I’m aware of some of the criticism directed toward FFnet as a whole (and am of a completely different opinion, but that’s another matter), I still don’t get why it would be attacked.

This site’s content is made by a community of people who don’t have much to do with FFnet’s owners and/or leaders, so attacking FFnet means attacking its community and threatening the stories this community wrote.

I cannot see how anybody could possibly benefit from this.

      • yemi hikari

        04/07/2013 at 12:16 am

@ Jiou – I honestly can’t see how benefit from this unless the persons goal was to get the site admins to increase their security. If it is to protest the rules or protest the fact they don’t think the rules are being enforced enough hacking honestly isn’t the way to get their point across because this isn’t a political issue, nor is a customer service issue. I also can’t see someone who hates fanfic going out of their way to hack a site either.

        04/11/2013 at 9:38 pm

Well, that was bitter. If you harbour that kind of contempt for FFn, why are you here? In my opinion, FFN is a great site despite a few flaws, and, since it gives us a free opportunity to write and improve our writing, I wouldn’t complain. I’m so glad I found this site

      • Andy Black

        04/14/2013 at 12:14 pm

I’m not sure what your problem is, but “just uploading” to another site is not as simple as it sounds. This site really offers a great resource for writers of fan fiction. It’s the only one that really has a following allowing a writer to get real feedback.

This interruption in services is a slap in everyone’s face who cares about fan fiction and has contributed to the site. Why can’t people just find things that are positive in life and not always end up making a mess of something good?

Umm.. ff.n has had some of the BEST “customer satisfaction” i have seen on the net lately. I mean they are not perfect and obviously there are problems (mainly pretaining to how they handled M+ fics i would say) but overall… they have actually LISTENED to what we have had to say which is a major difference from a couple of the other sites i am a part of that are making weekly/monthly updates!

        So what is the problem..?

It didn’t matter how many childhoods were forfeited, how many lives had been lost over these past 100 years, or how many hours Zuko and Katara spent doing paperwork to solidify Peace Treaties between Nations; eventually, they all started to realize, that Avatar or not, the war would never end as easily as it had started. My site does not show up any of my favorites stories or authors. All it shows is my communities. Also none of the links on a story page works (increase font, follow/favorite, etc) on the next and previous buttons work. I can go to the author, and change chapters, but nothing else. I am reading on the mobile site from my laptop, so I could increase the font large enough so I could see it. I hope all is fixed soon. I know you say it is, but it isn’t. Not for me any way.

It works now; have you tried selecting any of the categories? Published or updated or any of that? I’ve seen that too, and I think its some kind of glitch in the system. It usually happens if you have more Favorited stories and authors.

Dear Attacker, i started writing you a much nicer note than this but then i decided not to. I’m pretty ticked off at you. Attacking FFN…. the point? Here I’ll answer that myself; there is no point! If you are going to learn to code and hack then at least do something useful! Make a video game or program a robot or something! I hope they catch you xP

    • yemi hikari

      04/06/2013 at 11:01 pm

They’re either trying to make the site admins change the rules they don’t agree with and feel are a form of censorship or they are trying to make it clear that the rules should be enforced more.

If its the first, they really need to learn what censorship is and that many of the rules are there for very good reasons. While it is true that other sites haven’t had a problem with the stuff ffnet has banned, these sites are far smaller then ffnet and not as well known. I don’t have anything against a lot of the stuff the site bans, but I also understand full well why they choose not to allow it.

If it is the second, it is now going to take the site admins longer to get back to steadily taking care of the rule breaking fanfics, unless they decide to take a break and go through the rule breaking fanfics while they deal with the problem, but chances are they won’t because they don’t know the reason yet as to why the person is attacking.

Of course, it could be someone who was bored, or someone who wants the site admins to update their security before they make any more updates.

      • Teamie

        04/06/2013 at 11:28 pm

Well, unless you know the attackers, then you really can’t speak for them. In all your posts, you seem obsessed about rule-breakers. I’ve been on this site for 10 years and I haven’t witness all the “horrors” you make it out to be. The attacks were probably done by some idiot. I doubt very much it was someone weeping in the corner about their poor deleted smut fic.

      • yemi hikari

        04/07/2013 at 12:10 am

@ Teamie – Not all of my posts are about rule breakers, so its not possible for me to seem obsessed about rule breakers in all of my posts. I typically don’t bring up anything pertaining to the rules, unless it is pertinent to the conversation at hand. While it may be true that none of the fandoms you have been have seen an increase in rule breaking fanfics or even an epidemic, there are certain fandoms that certain rule breaking is overly obvious.

~ The misc. categories are flooded with original fiction and RPF.
~ Fandoms that have a music fandom like Glee and High School Musical have a prevalence of song fics that use copyrighted lyrics.
~ Many book fandoms have problems with the “reading the books” stuff.
~ Some of the smaller fandoms have the same problems that the misc. categories do.
~ Hunger Games has a problem with interactive fanfics.
~ Homestruck has a problem with second person.

On top of this the person above me asked if there would be a reason for someone to attack the site, and the only political statement would have to deal with the site rules. I thus gave the reason. Otherwise it is as you said some idiot, or as I pointed out… someone who decided to test the sites security and make a point about updating.

      • yemi hikari

        04/07/2013 at 12:12 am

P.S. It’s also not a good idea to assume that the hacking was done by an idiot. That guess speaks no more for the person then my guesses did.

      • Lily Alder

        04/07/2013 at 10:57 am

I’m not sure that ‘tantrum’ is the most reasonable cause of the attempted hack. ‘Bored’ is more likely; so in ‘because it’s there’. But a hack as ‘an attention-getting-mechanism because of the rules’ sounds like a focus so narrow the hacker would have to be way over on the obsessed side. Of course, people who worry that much about the rules or people who break them are equally obsessed.

      • Lord Kelvin

        04/07/2013 at 3:11 pm

DDoS is done more frequently for monetary gain rather than to make a political statement. It takes time and work to build a botnet big enough to slow down a service like FFN. Curiously, the attack lasted for a very short time. Either they ran out of juice or went to find a better target.

It is not impossible FFN would get a request for a “protection fee” to avoid future attacks that did impede service quality.

The gist of what I got from that is “maintain the status quo” even though many of the folks who’ve commented to past blog posts have said they don’t like the way things are at present.

@ dathan rice – So mpreg should be banned simply because it is scientifically impossible in real life. All the writers of mpreg must also be stupid because they obviously don’t understand that it is physically impossible for a male to carry a baby. Please look up the trope “Mr. Seahorse”. Not all mpreg writers are stupid, or in your words retarded.

It says they were doing some updates this morning, did they get any of this resolved yet? I am kind of weary of posting new updates until the problem has been fixed. As far as the attack, that is really childish. This site is harmless and is just a place where a group of fiction writers and readers like to gather and share their interests. We are not harming anyone and nothing posted on here is meant to hurt or offend anyone. I think attacking sites like this one is a complete waste of time! 04/15/2013 at 4:18 am

I really do wonder why someone would attack ffnet.

If it was someone trying to make a statement, you’d think they would email ffnet before or after the attack saying what they want. If it was because of the policies it is a simple solution to just host them elsewhere. If they lost stories to ffnet because of them then I feel no pity. Any writer that doesnt have complete copies of their stories backed up on their own computer is a fool. If someone was really angry at ffnet about something, then they would’ve said something so that it could be resolved however as far as we know they havent because then ffnet would know the source and be already on the way to insuring it doesnt happen again..

If the attack was for monetary gain then it doesnt make much sense either. I doubt that ffnet makes a whole lot of money considering the entire site is free. The only reason the site exists is ads pretty much and those dont get a whole lot of money. Hackers looking to make money have many better sites to hack such as ones that store actual user credit card details

If it was to improve the site security then why wouldnt they just get a job to do it legally for them. Or at the least work with them to do a test? It is a real job to be paid to attack a company’s own computer systems. It’s called Penetration Testing.

The only other thing to really think about is if the person was bored. However with a site as big as ffnet it would take a good sized attack and people who take the time and effort to build a botnet big enough to make a dent dont just go around attacking sites for fun. There’s usually a point to making an attack because each attack puts a hacker at risk of being discovered and arrested or have their botnet taken out. Any person that can build a relatively big botnet realizes this.

More than likely I’d say is that it is because someone wants to either test their own attack capabilities or they want to make a name for themselves by taking down a large website despite it not being very well known outside the fanfic community and then realizes it wasn’t getting anywhere.. If that is true then they failed pretty badly. Maybe it was someone who hoped to gain something like money out of it but then realized they wouldn’t get anything useful out of it. Any one of these could explain the short amount of time for the attack.

In short it could be any number of reasons but it sure wasnt a normal attack,

Well, there are many possible reasons for this attack, but it is quite possible that it was done by people who were victims of the purge. Honestly If you are gonna say something is not allowed, enforce it from day 1, not just suddenly sweep through like a plague. Also, you should take into account how much of a stories focus is on the inappropriate stuff. a few of my favorite writers have expressed a reluctance to post on the site because the line on whats appropriate and what isn’t is extremely blurred. During the purge a lot of smut stories were deleted but others were ignored. It would help smooth things if you had explained what criteria the stories that survived had compared to those that didn’t. That said Personally i feel like the staff made a huge mistake with the sudden enforcing of rules that many probably weren’t aware were at risk of being enforced. Either enforce from day 1 or don’t enforce at all. 90% of the inappropriate stuff is under M rating, which is something you have to enable in the search, It isn’t like someone can “accidentally” stumble upon the stuff.

perhaps anonymous? as they target censoring and since got rid of a bunch of fanfics that were too inappropriate so might be why. BUT THIS IS JUST A THEORY.

I think I still have the attack in my computer. The site won’t let me log in and some pages are slow to load. If anyone can help me out, send me an e-mail.

Was wondering she we were going to start gettin email notifications that our favorite stories have been updated. It’s a pain to remember 200+ stories and see if they have been updated. Been quite disappointed with fanfiction site lately.

I’m having the same problem; ever since 3 am last night I stopped receiving e-mail alerts from my account when I clearly had alerts in my settings. I think it’s under attack again, since I haven’t been getting e-mails the whole day even until now.

Same problem :/ Everything’s supposed to be fixed? Because I’m still not receiving Emails for PMs, and my followers aren’t receiving Emails for story and chapter updates… and my problem has been like this for a day or two at least, much longer than under 2 hours…

I have Gmail too and the same problem as you. What’s going on? I should have gotten at least 3 update alerts on fics and two PM alerts but instead got none. Is it only a Gmail thing?

I’m having this issue too. Posted a chapter yesterday and a chapter today, still no alerts.

I haven’t had an update since early Saturday morning, despite several PMs and reviews. I thought it might be a problem with my email so I created another account. I got the initial verification from ff but nothing after that, despite more PMs and reviews

Is the lack of email notification still a problem? Because I don’t seem to be getting any alerts and posting new chapters to stories on doesn’t give any story alerts.

    (Already posted this elsewhere)

I have not received any email alerts since 11/05/2013 4:26 PM Australian Eastern Standard.

    Using Hotmail.

If the admins could see if this issue is just related to myself or system wide it would be greatly appreciated.

when is the email alerts going to be back up? I haven’t received any at all but when I look on the actual site, I have PM’s and unseen story reviews. very annoying. I don’t want to post a new chapter to a fic if no one’s even going to know about it since their alerts aren’t working.
