Polishing Part 1

30 Jul

We got some great feedback on the new browsing UI change and will continue to make improvements over the next few days to address the short-comings caused by the new usage pattern.

  • Fixed incorrect length filtering.
  • Fixed issue with Mobile/Tablet/Netbook users using the desktop site and not being able to scroll down to reveal the complete selection interface.
  • New visual cues to quickly identify enabled filters.
  • Misc fixes and improvements.

  • Hybrid filter UI approach where a few of most common filters do not require the activation of the advanced selection screen.
  • Live matching result count of activated filters.
  • Atom feeds will return pending the stabilization of the new filtering system.

Another thing: The Fanfiction Count Abreviation (like 4.4K) is very annoying for low-activity fandoms where you can remember the exact count ( /movies/Avatar/ etc).
A feature that seems to be long gone is manually editing the URL after filtering to allow searches for longer fics than 100 000 words (there is a 1 000 000+ word FF in /movies/Avatar/ )

I just have one question/concern. Is the site suppose to automatically switch over after the filters are applied or no? I`m trying to look through the stories only it won`t change or anything and I`m using my phone as well. I like the idea, I just need to know because it won`t apply what I request. Thanks!

Could you PLEASE switch back to the old filtering optiions ? Where is the filtering option by name? It’s inconvenient if we have to filter by the beginning letter. Sorry, but the new ffn is definitely a mistake. Never change a runnign system. The old ffn was running, so why in the wiorlddid you have to change it??? WHY???

@Isabeu – they changed because users asked them to, through this blog.

I only looked for this blog because I wanted to complain about the new search options.

That seems to be one of he main reasons people are using it now, as we were once content with what the site already was. We had no reason to try and fix what wasn’t broken.

Now the “majority” seems to have shifted, as we (the formerly-content users, with nothing to complain about) are all here, complaining about the new search-system.

Sorry, but – what popsessed you to make all those new filters?? It’s confusing and troublesome as hell! No, just NO. Change it back, please.

@T Evans – the new filters were brought in after numerous requests through this blog over the past several months. That’s what possessed them.

I love the new update, thank you very much, however, will you guys consider creating a “less than 15k” filter? That would be extremely helpful, thank you!~

I have not been able to use the filters at all since the changes with them began, and its so frustrating. Used to be that in two quick steps my favorite stories would appear, and the updated fics would be to the top of the list. Loved it! No hunting all over the site required. Next day change had been made to site and nothing worked right. The main search filters still do not work on my computer at all. The field will highlight but show nothing but the default the site is set to already! I hate this! I have to play stupid games with side filters because I can’t remember the names of all my favs. It is stuck on T rating, and most of my favs are above that rating. I want to the old system back, when it actually worked, and I could access my favorite fics.

I totally agree with you I have no idea how to use the new system. I’ve tried and failed at it many times. The old system was great, I thought the point of the site was that, one – people were free to write phenomenal stories, and two, people were able to read exactly what they wanted to read about. Now, with the new system I can’t do that. It used to be so simple and within a few seconds I was searching through stories I was actually incredibly eager to read. The old system was fantastic, you know what they say, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. Short, sweet, and easy to remember. So take what has been said by all fans of the site into consideration and change it back. If not then at least put a small set of instructions about how to use the new system, up in the site. I think it would help a lot of people out including myself.

By “it used to be so simple and within a few seconds I was searching through stories I was actually incredibly eager to read” do you mean something along the lines of “all I had to do was click one title after another without having to look at the summaries”?

        If so…

So what if you have to stop and read the summaries. This would honestly explain why I had a couple of people who liked a certain ship come into my story and flame me when I clearly hadn’t marked said story as romance. In the long run its a bad habit to get oneself into for that and other reasons.

You’re being super rude. Don’t assume people skip summaries / are flamers just because they don’t happen to share your opinion. The person above doesn’t deserve any of your frustration and aggressiveness. Take it elsewhere.

@ nonnie – The person being rude here is the person assuming I called everyone who skips summaries a flamer. I said such behavior explains why I and others who don’t ship a couple of characters have been the targets of flamers in the past. Said flamers also skipped summaries and were in a hurry to read their ship. Most people of course were polite enough to hit the back button when they found out it wasn’t ship fic. I also said there are other issues about this kind of behavior, like the fact they came to expect almost every story to be for their ship as well as not paying attention to the cliches that show up in their ships among other things.

I really don’t like the new filters. It’s become extremely hard to find a story centering around two specific characters. when i try filtering a romance between two characters it comes up with a bunch of different pairings. the excluding filter does not work well enough ether. please go back to the old filters. i have avoided coming on this website because of the horrible filters. if you don’t do something i will be forced to stop coming here. I really hope that does not happen as i have been using this website for nearly 10 years now.

I honestly do not like the new filtering system. The other one was much more simple and easier to understand. Why fix something thats not broken?

When you “fixed” it for mobile, you made it i have to use the mobile site, which sucks anyway

Umm I don’t know how many people requested for a new filter. But I’m sure I’m not one of them! I like the old version better… PLEASE change it back!!!! It. Is. Really. Confusing. In. The. New. Version…

I’m just happy the atom feeds are going to come back (although strangely a lot of my crossover ones still work), I relied on those a lot to keep track of categories that don’t get a lot of traffic and that I forget about. I liked the old filtering system, but the new one is fine for me too, especially now that it’s refined a little and easier to use.

is there a filters for dummies instruction that someone can send me? maybe i’m not using the filters correctly?

Your “fix” for the filtering system on mobile MADE EVERYTHING WORSE. Now I can’t even use the filters.because it won’t let me see the enter!
