25 Aug

Due to an unforeseen side-effect of a maintenance effort last night, the mobile story pages displayed random 403 errors. This has been fixed and we apologize for any inconvenience.

anyone know why when I delete a chapter and it says reviews are deleted also but they still remain? that’s stupid! I want to repost the chapter b/c its different and now people can’t review again b/c it didn’t delete their reviews like it warned it would. anyone know how to fix this??

      08/26/2013 at 8:51 pm

Does it actually say that the reviews are deleted? I ask because I’ve remember having gotten that message when I deleted a chapter before. I do remember that reviews have never been deleted with the chapters before and I do hope the site admins aren’t adding it in because it would be abuse by the people who want to delete every negative signed review they can.

      • AiP

        08/26/2013 at 9:00 pm

it said reviews would be deleted but they’re not. and the site admins confirmed they don’t remove the reviews which is stupid b/c then people can’t review and i’d have to remove the whole story which is also a very poor option. why won’t they just remove the reviews when the chapter is deleted?? makes sense! *gah*

      • yemi hikari

        08/26/2013 at 10:23 pm

Because there are too many sensitive little wall flowers out there who would use such a system to delete all negative reviews just to make their stories “clean”. Which is not in their right as there are people out there who do use the reviews to decide whether they read the story… aka the review section isn’t just for the writer.

Because also allowing more then one review would lead to spam and make it easy for the review count to be padded.

Because a long time ago the site admins announced that we’re supposed to post as close to final copies of the stories in the first place and while people can make edits like you’re talking about it isn’t meant to be done that way.

So… makes more sense that it doesn’t work the way you want it too.

        08/26/2013 at 10:26 pm

I understand that but if an author chooses to delete a chapter then the reviews should go also. its just stupid b/c some of us actually want to delete for story purposes not review purposes. so however you can ‘tweak’ it its still stupid to me. we can just block a reviewer for next time or delete anon’s so its dumb that if we delete a whole chap and want to repost we don’t have that right. gosh its like the bullies win over the authors all the time *sigh*

      • yemi hikari

        08/27/2013 at 1:28 am

…if we delete a whole chap and want to re-post we don’t have that right…

Sorry, but you do have the right to delete a whole chapter and re-post. What you don’t have the right to do is delete signed reviews whether its because you don’t like the review (not your personal scenario of course) or because you couldn’t take the time not to post a rough draft in the first place. While you’re right that it is the writer’s choice to delete a chapter or even multiple chapters it doesn’t change the fact it is poor writing etiquette. The price for poor writing etiquette in this particular case is that the readers aren’t going to be able to review again using their signed accounts. By having it this way it makes it more desirable to have as close to a finished draft in the first place.

        08/27/2013 at 8:38 am

You can make disparaging comments about my writing that’s up to you. this had nothing to do with not liking the reviews or not writing a first draft or having poor writing etiquette. a major plot point changed and I had to redo it. you’re obviously not understanding so thanks for your time to reply but this conversation is over.

        08/27/2013 at 4:53 am

Reviewing anonymously is always a possibility. Don’t worry about it. If people want to leave a review again, they will. I’ve left an anonymous review on an edited chapter before, and others chimed in on that very same instance as well.

        08/27/2013 at 1:10 pm

a major plot point changed and I had to redo it.

Sorry… but how is my pointing out that you’re not supposed to post rough drafts of your writing making despairing comments about your writing? You’re also saying that this has nothing to do with posting a rough draft either. So I’m thinking you’re operating under the assumption that it doesn’t count as a rough draft because the changes have nothing to do with syntax and grammar. You handled that in the first draft you wrote. What you don’t seem to understand though is that as long as its not the final draft it is a rough draft.

The other person is right. I actually prefer leaving reviews anonymously when a writer changes things because it a.) shows where they have grown and b.) the changes the writer has made. I’m also going to note something else. While it isn’t frustrating to see writers who are growing make changes to their stories it is really annoying to see the good writers do it simply because it means they’re indecisive. Why should I read their work if they’re going to change things on a whim?

Now I get random 408 errors. I use Firefox.

      08/26/2013 at 4:59 pm

Quincy – please e-mail support with some details:
      Your OS
Your connection type (cable, DSL, dial-up, etc)
      mobile device or no?
Can you recreate the error in other browsers?
Are you having trouble on any other websites?

408 is a timeout error is why they’ll need this. This may be a connectivity issue with your ISP, but without details, techs can’t attempt to reproduce your issue. If they can’t reproduce it, they can’t determine what’s causing it to fix it.

i keep getting messages on my google account saying that new chapters for storys im reading were put up but when i click on the link it says Chapter not found. Please check to see you are not using an outdated url.New chapter/story can take up to 15 minutes to show up.
so i waited a day but still nothing but that message keeps popping up so i am wondering is that linked to this error or is it just a mess up?

    • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

      08/26/2013 at 4:56 pm

kaleen – can you provide links? I can think of a number of legitimate reasons that this might have occurred. (profile deletion, story deletion, chapter deletion because of violation of ToS)

Glad you got that tweaked – can you do something please about the 11 year old I just e-mailed to you as well as the SOPA spam from the people who haven’t read it and won’t be bothered to and the porno images you have on site that I e-mailed? That would be lovely, ducks.

  26. DonPiano

    08/26/2013 at 4:37 pm

I still haven’t heard from you guys concerning the abuse emails. One of them included a user who posted an explicit photo as a profile image that’s been on this site since December 2012. If you’re not going to do anything about it I’m sure I could get the authorities involved considering how many minors are on this site.

    • nowistand

      08/27/2013 at 3:16 am

When did you email them? They are just human. Also, remember they get swamped with emails every day. If it takes a couple days, just relax.

And wow, you’re an a**, resorting to threats to get your point across.

If it’s been a year since you sent, send it again. It might’ve gotten lost.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        08/27/2013 at 11:03 am

To be perfectly fair, they haven’t responded to a single abuse e-mail since 2013-08-01. And those were the responses to the ones sent 2013-07-31. That’s just what I’ve sent, and others have advised me they have had the same experience.

When you’re ignored this long, and the image in question is of someone’s semi-erect penis, and you’re finding 10 and 11 year olds (admitted on their profiles or in stories) on site *every day*, I can’t blame DonPiano for the frustration.

You’re certainly allowed your opinion on the matter; however, it might be better received if you didn’t curse at the poster that you are reprimanding for exhibiting rude behavior.

I think fanfiction should allow rating ma if you are signed in. There are lots of stories like that already so at least you can control them.

    • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

      08/27/2013 at 5:52 pm

The rating was removed because the site has no age verification software and they wished to expand their user base back in 2002 to allow those readers between 13 and 18 access to the site.

I do *not* think that MA stories should be permitted. Logging in does not stop someone from providing false age information (it never has), and since there is a dearth of staff to handle the current issues, adding another one (age verification) would only exacerbate their problems.

    • yemi hikari

      08/27/2013 at 8:10 pm

No thank you. People can always lie to get around age verification. Since the site is thirteen and up having 18+ material would be a major temptation and many will lie about their age. On top of this MA technically isn’t the only tier above the M rating, so technically it’s easier to simply say no 18+ material rather then getting very technical about this.

      • Person

        09/03/2013 at 11:38 pm

I see where you are coming from.but what I was trying to say is if you can’t stop 18+ then possibly you could control it.

      • Simoneau

        09/04/2013 at 5:30 pm

@Person – I’m not trying to be funny here, but can you please explain how allowing MA rated material is supposed to control it? Because I don’t see any logic at all in your argument.

As it stands, at least we have the distant hope that stories which are unsuitable for young readers (which make up a good proportion of the readers in ffnet; not sure about fictionpress) can be reported and removed.

Once the site accepts them, however, even that forlorn hope will vanish, leaving absolutely NO mechanism to stop thirteen-year-olds finding and reading this material.

      • yemi hikari

        09/05/2013 at 4:33 am

Since we can’t stop the other works that break the site rules perhaps we should allow them too? Let’s let the writers post what ever copyrighted material they want to, or even RPF. Let them post stuff with poor grammar, spelling and formatting just because there will always be people who break the rules. Honestly, the fact people break the rules does not mean the rules should change. Worst logic ever.

I know you are trying to curb the impact of automatic fanfic
downloaders, probably because they are causing undue strain on your
systems from rapid and repeated requests.

Is it possible for FFN to start using the “Last-Modified:” header field
in HTTP responses to reflect the actual last modification time of a story?

If that is possible, the HTTP HEAD command would be all that was needed
for automatic fanfiction downloaders to determine if a story needs

This could reduce FFN ‘s overhead, it would limit bandwidth usage and
wouldn’t require the server to render the entire story page HTML. In
essence (depending on your database structure) a single SQL lookup per
request could be all that was needed to retrieve a given StoryId’s last
    modification time.
