Between Friday the 13th and Tuesday the 17th…

11 Sep

Between Friday the 13th and Tuesday the 17th we will be working overtime to relocate our servers to a new facility. The new location will allow us to better service our users and give us the flexibility to launch some new features that are not currently possible.

Due to the amount of work involved, we expect some random bugs to pop-up during the move. However, we will do our best to minimize any impact to our users and perform most of the disruptive work during midnight hours.

Specific details and times of potential down-times will be forthcoming.

      What’s the screenplay category?

Why not an unseen tagging system for searching stories? That way when you’re searching for a story the search pulls from tags, not just the title and summary. So if you’ve got a catchy summary that doesn’t include a term such as “werewolf” but your story is a about a werewolf, you can tag it and it will appear in that search.

Also on the note of M/ MA, if so many authors write it why don’t they bring back the category but have an age limit on it. I’ve seen sites where you have to have an account with a posted age before they’ll even let you click a link. If you’re under 18 you get a redirect back to the main site. Or have people under 18 register for an account with their parent’s email attached, so that if there are any inappropriate reading attempts parents get an email and voila! Problem decreases.

I would like to see special sections for comments but dont remove review just add comments section so we can comment story like posts on facebook

      09/16/2013 at 6:20 pm

No please. We already have forums and if a writer wants to have running comments about their stories they can use that.

    • bienfait

      09/17/2013 at 12:05 am

What would be the benefit of of a separate comments area? Readers who want to leave comments can do so by reviews; authors who want to comment on their own work can include short author’s notes in their chapters or longer commentary on their profiles.

If the author and a reader want to engage in extended discussions, there’s still no need to clutter up the public pages. They can exchange PMs, or if they think anyone else might want to join in they can take it to the forums as yemi suggests.

A comments system is therefore redundant.

If any such thing was brought in, I hope the author will have the right to disable it, as I certainly would do.

I would disable it as well.

Agreed. I would also like to disable the share feature, and guest reviews (again.).

It’s not letting me check my account. Any time I click ‘Log In’ or try to check anything on my account, the page won’t load. Any other page loads just fine, but not that one.

I’m always happy to hear about new updates. I hope some sort of system for replying to anonymous reviews will be addressed so I can reply to questions from people without accounts.

I know this has been mentioned earlier, but I would also like to chime in for some tweeking of the search/filter function of FFnet. If you are going to overhaul the pairing/shipping standard.. please also include a function/sort feature for platonic vs. romantic. I grow very weary of the pages of Yaoi/Slash I must navigate through to get to decent stories.

You know what would be great? If you guys could ban the groups that are harassing everyone. You know, like Critics United, Literate Union, Eliminators, all those guys. It’s taking the fun out of

    • God

      09/19/2013 at 1:46 pm

@ Chaos Hunter: And you know what I think would be great? Permanently banning all crybabies who scream “bully” and “flamer” when those groups point out that their stories are in violation of site rules. God forbid anyone tell you precious dumplins that your story is anything less than The Greatest Thing Ever Written!

Ooh, and something else that would be great? Instantly banning people who post RPF, “Read the Book” stories, personal announcements as stories, and “stories” that are just song lyrics. And what about the folks who post stories of incest and child-raping and call them “hot” and “sexy”?

If you are so convinced that the critic forums should be banned, maybe it’s time for FFN/ FP to adopt a Zero Tolerance policy. Then they wouldn’t need critic groups, would they? If all of the whiners and crybabies would just read the damn rules and TRY to follow them, there wouldn’t be a problem.

    • Lillian

      09/19/2013 at 2:44 pm

The concrit groups are not the problem. The problem is the users, such as yourself, breaking the rules of the site and believing they can do so because the sites logo says “Unleash Your Imagination”. You can unleash your imagination as long as you follow the rules. (Why do you think the site has you agree to the Guideline Rules before posting.)

The concrit groups such as CU, LU, Eliminators, and such are here to help clean up the site from the rule violating content and provide a pre-warning to you, the user, before the admins take a look at your story. They warned you, if you choose to ignore that warning it is on you. If you want your account suspended, that is fine, but don’t blame them just because you can’t follow a couple of simple rules.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/19/2013 at 7:50 pm

Yeah.. Im not going to listen to to you because every experience I’ve had with them has been a bad one. Needless to say, the site hasn’t enforced the rules in ten years, so why should I listen to a bunch of self appointed police?

      • Lillian

        09/20/2013 at 3:26 pm

Because, Chaos, they are trying to warn you against breaking the rules so that your account does not get suspended. It is not their fault if you acted a little hostile in your responses and called you out on it. Stop acting like a cry baby and learn to fallow the rules that you agreed to.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/20/2013 at 4:36 pm

Sorry, but have you even read some of the things that CU posts on their “helpful reviews”? Until you do, please don’t lecture me about “warnings”. If my account gets suspended, so what? I’ll just make a new one. And if my stories get deleted? I’ll just upload to a separate account.

        09/20/2013 at 5:02 pm

You’re sounding less and less like a victim and more like one of those people who try to Eva’s the rules and then bitch when they get caught.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/20/2013 at 5:08 pm

My apologies if this next question seems stupid, but what the hell does “Eva’s the rules” mean? I’ve never heard that term before.

        09/20/2013 at 5:10 pm

Evades. My phone decided to autocorrect for absolutely no reason. It does that sometimes.

        09/20/2013 at 5:19 pm

I see. Maybe we could settle this on FFnet when the bug is fixed. I’d like to talk more on private, If that’s alright with you.

      • Kanathia

        09/20/2013 at 5:39 pm

I suppose that depends on what you mean by ‘settle’. I’m not overly interested in an Internet slap fight. I’ve little patience for it.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/20/2013 at 8:48 pm

No no, nothing like that. I just wish to talk out yours and my opinions regarding this matter.

        09/21/2013 at 12:41 am

I see. My fanfiction username is the same as this one. It should be easy enough to find.

      • Lillian

        09/23/2013 at 1:30 am

Yes, I have and I find it quite helpful. Really you are just being a cry baby because your story/poem got removed for whatever rule you violated. Grow up and learn to follow what you agreed to.

Lol, you think you could get away with breaking the rules so easily. Wrong. You wouldn’t be able to post anything if the admins decided to permanently suspend your IP from the site. Believe it or not, they will do it. Continue to violate their rules and you are put under their radar, and people could easily just report your new account under who you originally were. Why people forget that is beyond me.

    • holmes4ever

      09/19/2013 at 7:44 pm

That would be nice, Chaos, but those groups have been there a long time and I don’t see the admins stirring themselves to do anything about it.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/19/2013 at 7:47 pm

Yeah, it would. And I see your point about the admins not doing anything. The best I can hope for is a petition to get them banned, but I don’t think that would be enough. You know what I’m saying?

      • Kanathia

        09/19/2013 at 7:52 pm

What was it that got flagged by one of these groups that upset you this much? Because I can say with complete honesty that sometimes stories need to be flagged.

      • Chaos Hunter

        09/19/2013 at 7:54 pm

That’s the thing. It was a poem. A freaking poem! Is posting a poem so wrong that they have to flag me and harass me at every turn?

      • A.J. Goode

        09/19/2013 at 8:51 pm

Was it a fanfiction poem, or was it an original poem? If it had nothing to do with fanfiction, then yes, it WAS wrong to put it on a fanfiction site. is for fanfiction, and FictionPress is for original (non-fanfiction) works. If you are posting things that AREN’T fanfiction on, yes, you are doing something that is so wrong.

FFNet does allow poetry, as long as it is FANFICTION poetry. Say, a poem about Hermione’s feelings toward Ron, or a poem about Percy Jackson’s feelings toward Poseidon. However, an angsty poem about your depression is NOT fanfiction and doesn’t belong there.

      • Kanathia

        09/20/2013 at 2:30 am

Well I suppose that depends on the poem.

      • holmes4ever

        09/20/2013 at 9:26 pm

Don’t bother petitioning them, Chaos. it wouldn’t do any good.

Can’t say I blame Chaos, the critic groups do have a pretentious air about them in telling users to “follow the rules because I’m a self appointed rule enforcer. ”
In that case I wouldn’t like just any old user, with no more authority than I do over the site, to tell me what to do with my story if I’ve never seen the rules be enforced before. It also would be annoying to have reviews that are irrelevant to your story’s plot or its quality if you have a bunch of people only telling you “you’re story isn’t allowed”.

However, the critic groups wouldn’t need to exist if the staff actually ENFORCED the rules the site owner implemented for THEIR website rather than have regular users try to attempt enforcing them. That happening often enough would probably make the message clear that “such and such” isn’t allowed. This means that they are the problem, not the users or the critic groups, because they are the authority that should be enforcing the rules to maintain order; right now there is no order because the rules are rarely enforced. So it seems that it is that is responsible for taking the fun out of for pitting users against each other in an “us vs them” mentality as a consequence of the poor rule enforcement.

I’m not at all surprised when users think they can get away with rule breaking stories when they practically can . (Aside from the MA purge, but that probably felt like a dunk in freezing cold water for users when that rule wasn’t truly enforced until 2012, as opposed to the better alternative where that rule could have been enforced consistently for users to “get the point”.)
I think some rules are even an outdated waste of time for this site to be concerned with, such as chat and second person narrative fics, as opposed to real things like copyright infringement that could get the site into trouble.

From what I see, the critic groups are a “band aid” solution to a much bigger problem; a problem that might bring this website to it’s downfall if it doesn’t get it’s act together. (My aren’t I a cheerful fella?)
