i’ve got pop up ads appearing on my mobile are they related to this?

      09/18/2013 at 10:10 pm

Yea I’ve been getting them too, and I’ve been wondering the same thing.

Same here. Pop ups are in every page and without an option to close.

Same here, absolute disaster in my opinion. Thank god for apps like instapaper and the reader function on safari, but really this needs a quick fix.

Sorry, it seems really unrelated (keep up the good work though) but what happened to the button that let us hide the ads on the sites for a day? It’s been gone for a while and I’m wondering if it will be coming back.

Thanks for posting this… I’m having error message pop up for many of the stats pages on personal profile. Namely, Profile and Story Stats… I guess I’ll go to bed…
BTW… I’m on OS Lion (forgot what number that was… 10-something) and using Safari…
I’m thinking this is related to the move?
I copied this here, because I also got errors when trying to e-mail…

Xing, I know you and your team are busy with the move along with other projects, but I was just wondering if you can comment on the issues of authors using the anonymous review system to reply to anon reviewers as well as the ‘Read the Book’ genre that’s been going on in a number of fandoms. I think a couple of us would be interested in hearing what FFN’s stance on those two issues would be.

PS: An update on what projects you guys are working would be helpful too.

To the others, can someone explain to me the purpose of the RSS feeds in simple terminology (the use of the more technical terms easily lose me).

    • KageNoNeko

      09/19/2013 at 12:36 am

RSS feeds making it so that you don’t have to visit the website to know that things have updated. That’s the simplest way I can put it.

      • Erica

        09/19/2013 at 2:59 am

I’m also thankful of this, as I didn’t know too much about RSS feeds either.

      • Spyridon

        09/19/2013 at 4:07 pm

Thanks KageNoNeko. Do the RSS feeds work by giving you alerts on Twitter? I thought the story alert functions would do the same function.

    • Laura

      09/19/2013 at 1:08 am

I don’t understand why authors using the anonymous review system to reply to anon reviewers is an issue, just because how else are you supposed to answer their questions? Other than that I agree with everything you said. The “Read the Book” genre is popping up a lot.

      • Spyridon

        09/22/2013 at 10:45 pm

Normally, Laura, I would agree with you up until FFN decided to go public with a filter that sorts be review count. I know of one reviewer who does toe the gray area rather well as he answers to the anon review with the review quoted and deletes the original review so as not to affect the review count. It’s just one of those things that review system needs an overhaul.

Spyridon, in regards to the issue of RTB, this is the official position of the site, sent via e-mail:

Re: [#51766] Query regarding novelizations and quotation of copyrighted dialogue in fanfiction

      FanFiction.Net Support 8/01/13

      To: horusavenger

To be safe, we do not allow any inclusion of copyrighted passages within fanfictions.

Please help us spread the word.

**No** copyrighted material should be present – so the RTB that is on site is not only in violation of copyright, so are all the stories which contain song lyrics, and the numerous people in Harry Potter lately who have decided that “it’s okay” to post the entire first chapter of any one of Rowling’s books and change the gender/name of a character and call it fanfiction. This also applies to the misperception that putting Lilo in the script of Mulan is a parody (it isn’t) and that it is permissible to post the entire script as “fanfiction”.

Now, for clarification – NO – I am NOT HorusTheAvenger. Because Zack requests that the information he provides be passed on, HorusTheAvenger did so.

        Oh, and, Xing?
You have a user threatening violence against someone exposing said copyright infringement:

        “Guest 9/16/13 . chapter 7
Wow, if I could jump through the computer screen and choke the shit out of warty hogs I would. I am pretty damn sure that he is one of the many Pathetic, lowlife, unethical, immoral, stupid little coward piece on shits on fanfiction . Who the hell does he think he is …calling your story “illegal” I mean what the fuck! Does he know that what he is saying to you in over the internet harassment. Which is just as bad as harassment in person. This guy (or guys I don’t know) is a jack ass and should cry you a river, build you a bridge and GET THE FUCK OVER IT!
people like that piss me off. Keep writing you are really good at it, you never cease to amaze me.

Thank you for your awesomeness 🙂

Oh I almost forgot… WARTY HOGGS if I see you saying rude stuff about her writing … me and you are gonna have some words. Try doing something usefully for once in your life and fuck off! If you don’t like what she writes, don’t read it. She does not need you and your childish reviews to ruin her day.

        That’s all I have to say …”

Be much appreciated if you did something not only about that person deciding to plagiarize Rick Riordan and call if fanfiction, (see above about changing name/gender and posting entire copyrighted text) as well as banning IPs of “guests” who decide to threaten violence against those exposing illegal actions.

Frankly, if I wanted to read Percy Jackson, I’d read it, not someone’s changing of “Percy” to “Andrea.” (Yep, that’s exactly what that is.)

        09/19/2013 at 4:16 pm

I think that the coding team should place an announcement box at the top of the website that appears on every screen (mobile I think it would consume too much at the top) just to alert that policies that FFN want people to know. Let’s face it, not many people come to the blog except for when they are having problems. Maybe a purge too would be a good idea about getting rid of the RTB genre. With the new filters, I’m seeing a lot more RTB stories in Harry Potter. I never thought it was THAT bad.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/19/2013 at 7:27 pm

The only thing is, Spyridon, that it’s already in the TOS and the Guidelines. And you have to agree to that when you post a story. So how much more should they throw it in someone’s face? Honestly and truly? Because they already set it in front of you quite a bit.

Rather than recoding and having that as something else for everyone to ignore, I think they need to process the plagiarism reports they have and remove the thieves from the site.

@ RM ~ Funny how I know about this one because one of her supporters decided to bring up her name in another blog.

@ S ~ What would be EVEN better is if it was right there when people logged in right under the “Security and Privacy Best Practice”. This would solve the issue I brought up relating to the fact a lot of kids don’t understand or know what plagiarism is or why copying another persons story is not only wrong but not writing. I needs to be explained. The site admins can even point them to this site if they don’t want to go into great depth as it does a good job of explaining things.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/20/2013 at 12:07 am

Yemi – I’m “loving” the defense of “other people do it too!” Mm. That gonna be what you tell the judge there, lovey?

      • yemi hikari

        09/20/2013 at 11:57 am

Those kids honestly need consequences for their actions otherwise they’ll never learn it is wrong. And some after that won’t learn its wrong either.

      • Spyridon

        09/22/2013 at 10:42 pm

@RM: You, me, and probably a few people actually take the time to read it but announcements like this need to be announced publicly so there’s no misconception as to the stance of FFN on their policies. Keeps the offenders’ wiggle room to a minimum.

@Yemi: For a crack moment, I thought it would be neat if every person who signs up have to a go through a refresher course on what plagiarism is but that would be overkill and not really . . . what’s the word? . . . ineffective?

Too bad there isn’t a public shame list or something. Humiliation/embarrassment seems to be the only effective tools this generation. I don’t know about you but I got the fear of the writing gods placed in me when I went to middle school and how records of plagiarism can seriously f*** up your life.
