Sep 19th, Final Leg

19 Sep

We have completed the most critical part of the data-center transition last night and here are the current resolved and outstanding issues:

  • Spell/Grammar checking will be offline until later today.
  • Stats servers are up and collecting data but stats will not be updated until later today.

Thanks to user feedback, we have isolated the problem of users not being able to favorite/follow due to a login/cookie issue. If you are/were having issues with favorite/follow feature, please perform one of the following

  • Clear your browser cookies. Usually in privacy/history settings.
  • Or hit the login/account page of the site and re-attempt to login or logout.

Great work, guys. Would you please give me hits every day? You seem incapable of doing that job and you should do a little bit better in that regard.

If you’d read Xing’s post above, you’d see that the daily hits (stats) are disabled till later today.

No hits every day means your stories aren’t getting any hits. It isn’t’s fault. Maybe your stories just aren’t interesting.

I think it’d be great (and extremely helpful) to add a section where you can see user reviews on your stories all on one page instead of having to click every individual story. Also, adding a filter for “Read” and “Unread” or “Answered” and “Unanswered” would be extremely nice.

    • Lillian

      09/19/2013 at 2:35 pm

That would be extremely irritating. Not everyone wants to read peoples reviews on the same story they are trying to read at the same time. It would be worst then MST. I say keep them separate, there is no problem with hitting “review” when you want to see the reviews. As for a filter for “Read”, “Unread” or “Answered” and “Unanswered”.. Your email alters already tell you whether you read the review or not, that is if you have them turned on. The filter is useless since your email alters already provide it. If you have a problem with remembering whether you read it, that’s on you.

Now, what we really need is a improved report system. The site is flooded with so many rule breakers that it is ridiculous. I actually saw someone say that the admins did not care about rule breaking stories and that they rarely take any story down when it is reported. The users know that the admins are slow and are taking advantage of that to upload more of the violating content.

The report system should come first before any additional features are added such as the “Pairing/Couple” filter. (Yeah, I know many of you won’t like that being put on hold, but this is more important for both the site and the users.)

Another feature is a way to disable the share feature. Not everyone wants that either. You should let people be able to choose whether they want to share their work or not.

Also, something to add to the block feature. I noticed that a lot of users abuse the system to block people who they do not like all because they got a “negative” review (actually a critique they don’t approve of since they believe they are so perfect.), and, or, because they belong to a concrit group. That is not right, as you know, and so I am suggesting adding a reason box.

This way you will be able to check their reasoning behind the blocking, and prevent any innocent users being blocked just because of the users ego.

Maybe it is a silly feature, but it may prove of use.

        09/19/2013 at 2:45 pm

*snicker* Yes, that would really irritate the people I block.
Block by UID – 123456789 – reason: “plagiarist”

And I can see their reason for blocking me: “outed me for being a thief”. LMAO

        But I get your point.

And I wholeheartedly agree – the reporting system SHOULD be the first thing to be focused on now. The processing of backlogged reports needs to be FIRST priority.

        09/19/2013 at 7:13 pm

I actually can’t remember whether or not I answered reviews even with e-mail alert turned on, but that may have to do with the fact I reply straight from the review and no the e-mail as replying from the e-mail… well, it cuts off the review and doesn’t include the link to the reviews for the story. It’s good mostly for my older stories that have kind of gotten buried under the others, and even then I can’t find everything I think.

I do agree with the site admins focusing on the rule breakers. I was able to talk a writer out of paraphrasing another persons published work and making substitutions and now they’re telling me that they’re thinking of starting up again because others have done it, their stories are still there so it must be fine. This honestly isn’t a good thing, so the sooner the site admins do something the better. Though I admit they’ll likely come to the blog and complain.

While I like the idea of these writers having to write in why they’re blocking someone… first problem is it gives the admins more to do. Second, some people just don’t get along. Third, we have anonymous reviews. Fourth, I don’t want to explain why I’ve blocked some of these people. On one side the site admins will be made aware if my reason involves abuse or harassment. That’s not bad.

However, some of the kids… well, one of the writers I blocked about a couple of months ago was annoying but didn’t break any rules. They just kept insisting that “adults aren’t always right, but I must be right because…”. I had the feeling that she was special needs even before she posted it to her profile, which she thankfully has also removed. There were… other issues, like the fact she kept telling me her sob story, and… no. Any reason I gave would honestly be too personal.

      09/19/2013 at 6:32 pm

I second this. I’m afraid Lillian failed to understand the suggestion. From what I gather, you’re suggesting a page for the AUTHOR (not readers) to be able to read all reviews for all of his/her stories in one place, reply to them and mark them as read/unread. I think it would be an extremely handy feature for someone like me who checks his /her email on the go but can’t always reply immediately, then forgets and a while later can’t remember which reviews have already been replied to and which not. Having such a feature wouldn’t hurt.

      • yemi hikari

        09/19/2013 at 7:15 pm

It would be a wonderful feature, particularly for writers with many stories. One of my favorite writers has over eight-hundred stories. However, in the same regard it can also back fire. It should really only show unanswered reviews and it should only show from the day it was implemented and not go farther back, not unless the site admins have a way of retrieving whether people replied to the review or not.

      • Priscilla

        09/23/2013 at 10:55 am

Yes, that is what I was suggesting. It’s a reviews page for the authors, not the readers.

  3. LC

    09/19/2013 at 2:55 pm

Lillian: Hah. I’m pretty sure there’s one author who has blocked me. The only reason I can think of is that she didn’t like my last review. Not that I understand why. I’ve given her only good/positive reviews and put her work in my favorites and the last review wasn’t even a critique or anything worse either. it’s such a shame as i really did love reading her stories and this kind of makes me look at her with different eyes… Much less respect…

i’ve been wondering why my guest reviews show up few days late(shows up in time in my email). it didn’t that in the past(couple of months ago?) and i haven’t noticed same problem on other people’s stories and their reviews… doesn’t matter which browser i use either…

Speaking of improvements, I wish there could be a way to know wich chapter was the last I did read from a story(s).

I don’t think I’m the only one who is reading a long story but wants a pause and prefer to read something diferent for a while and later finish the unfinished.

You are aware that you could download Google Reader and use it to bookmark your page. That way you can go back to it later. Also, I think FF has the bookmark feature somewhere. I have seen it, I just can’t remember where.

      • seila

        09/23/2013 at 9:49 pm

The ff net did used to have a bookmarking feature. “Storymarks” I think they called it. It was cookie based, so I never got any wear out of it, but a nice idea nonetheless. It was marked by a little heart in the menu bar up at the top of the page. I don’t think it’s still there; if it is, adblocker kills it.

Personally, I just keep track of stuff by copying the chapter url into a word doc and sort them loosely according to fandom. I suppose real bookmarks would work just as well, but I find a document less hassle. It’s easier to move things around and add notes.

Search works, as does the main page and the general category listings (Anime, Books, Cartoons, Movies…) but I cannot access any story pages, specific category pages (Naruto, Bleach, Harry Potter, Howl’s Moving Castle…), or author pages.

I got this error pulling up an author page, and a near-identical one for every other page I tried except for the pages listed above. What’s going on?

I agree with the above poster. I’d like to have an area where I can see feedback reviews on all stories, rather than story by story. Not that you shouldn’t keep the present abilities, just add a section by the author for feedback for all stories.

I’d also like to click on daily hits and see hits by story, without having to check story by story (on the times when I am actually interesed)

I’d like to see who of logged in readers is reading. Even if only for those who favorited/followed a story.I.e., which of those who are following are still following.

Also, please add a comment box for when a user chooses to follow or favorite a story. Make it easier for authors to get comments then, i.e., give the user an option to comment why he is choosing to follow, favorite a story. Lots of these people never review or comment.

If a reader deliberately “spoils” the ending of a story in a review, it would be nice to be able to have that review removed or edited. If you’ve put up a long novel, and had people guessing/hoping the ending, all it takes is one malicious person to post the ending in a review and ruin it for any one casually checking reviews before they start a story.

    • Lillian

      09/20/2013 at 2:39 pm

This isn’t facebook. Why everyone wants it to be is beyond me.

Adding an area where an author can see all feedback is annoying. I don’t want to see all the feedback to my stories, I like to keep them separate. Each story has their own reviews, and needs to be kept separate in order so it doesn’t become a meshed up mess. If you want to see reviews as a whole, go to your email and type in to the search “Fanfiction” to get all your email alerts in one place so that you can read them. Believe it or not, it is not hard to do. This also provides the “Unread” or “Read” option. As for memory trouble, I won’t deny that I forget user names often, but really that isn’t the sites’ fault for our own problem. So we just got to remember better.

Also, you can check reviews via moderating them. Just go to the review box, click the chapter you want and the reviews for that chapter come to one full page. So adding this feature is pretty useless when it already, technically, exists.

I wouldn’t. I never check the stats form my stories. And the hits don’t really provide a story with much merit. Just because a lot of people read it, doesn’t mean it is good.

NO!!! If this site turns into anything like facebook, I think I will puke. It’s bad enough that they have the following and favorite options shown on a story, we do not need to see what our readers are following and still following. You can check that anyway via checking their story favorites.

So why force them to review or comment? I respect the people that like to keep quiet. It gives them a mystery that we have to solve. The comment box is out.

That’s redundant. You can already ask the admins to remove the reviews if it bothers you that much. As for editing, some reviewers, I don’t doubt, would like to be able to edit the grammar and spelling of their reviews. However the option makes it easier for trolls to use. If say if the reviews were turned into something like the forums, which is not needed, the troll who is in disguise of a “kind” user who starts up a conversation that you can’t help but comment on in a negative way, can change their post to make it seem like you are the bad guy in the argument. They could use this opportunity to do this to a lot of innocent users, so I say it is best to leave out the edit option. Let people see what the real comment was.

      • Priscilla

        09/23/2013 at 11:01 am

Again, Lillian is NOT understanding what i’m trying to say about the reviews page. All stories should be listed with the number of reviews next to the story name, with the read and unread box next to it. I’ve seen it on another site and it was an extremely useful feature. I have a lot of stories so it would be nice to keep track of them instead of going story by story.

Someone has copied a story written by a friend of mine – 00Zero – word for word, to the point where all of 00Zero’s a/n’s and thank you to reviewers are also listed. Several of us have left this person reviews to remove the story because it is clearly plagiarized but she has not done anything. This person has also published stories from other fanfiction authors on her own account as her own story. I’m looking for some direction as to what can be done.

I’m having the same problem as Bridget. I can access and general categories like Books, Movies, etc., but can not get to specific category pages like Harry Potter, Avengers, etc. I am also unable to login; the login page will not load.

    I keep getting this message:

FanFiction.Net Error Type 2 An error has occurred while processing your request.

All of this occurred in Firefox

why is it that when you hit the “ALL” link in at the top of the page (for any of the filters) it doesn’t change the way the stories are listed. It used to list everything in alphabetical order, heck, when you went to the main page for TV shows, etc., it always used to list all of the fandoms/shows/movies/etc. in alphabetical instead of instead of by popularity. Yes, I can click on the individual letters and browse that way but why not just list things alphabetically? Seems to make things more complicated than necessary.

I second Linda’s comment. I would prefer to have the option to view the stories alphabetically.

Me too. Much easier to find stuff – especially for checking fandoms you haven’t looked into before.

You guys who are having trouble with Firefox. I closed the browser, used CCleaner to clear my caches, and restarted my browser. Firefox now works. 🙂

I noticed a problem with the stats collection of data where accurate statistics were not being returned (specifically, 1 reader read an entire story (14 chapters) and sent 14 reviews, 1 per chapter, but the statistics showed only 10 hits to the story.) This was happening a week before the upheavals of the move and I would like to know if it’s been addressed, or looked at or fixed. There’s not much point to having the stats data collected if it’s inaccurate and/or skipping hits and it now makes me wonder if it’s restricted to the story stats or also affects the profile, forum and community stats as well.

The only way to truly stop plagiarising on the site would be to disable the copy functionality on stories, and prevent readers from downloading the stories. Literally, read-only. Since a lot of members prefer to download and read without being online, I am guessing that’s not going to be an option.

Any ideas on how much “later in the day” the stats will be updated?

Still no stats CST, anyone getting stats yet or a time when they are going to be up?

Stats are back but wonky. There is no difference between visits and visitors.
