Having access issues? Reboot….

20 Sep

There is a very small percentage of users being effected by out-dated dns entries within their browsers, computers/devices, and/or internet service provider. To put it plainly, your browser for some reason is going to the wrong location for our sites thus receiving timeouts and other problems.

If you are having similar issues, please try the following and report to see if any of the steps helped:

  1. Completely close your browser and try again.
  2. Test a different browser.
  3. Reboot your computer or mobile device.

I can’t open my account on fanfiction or read my stories. The account does not come at all, only a blank page shows up and when I try to read my favourite stories or stories which are not on my favourite’s list it says that fanfiction.net error type 2. I have also tried your steps on my sony tablet where my web browser’s version is3.2 and rel. is 1.

Everything else has been working fine, but for some reason I haven’t been receiving e-mail updates when I receive reviews, PMs or when one of the stories I follow are updated?

There are pop up ads on my mobile device… my browser already blocks them, but the ads are still popping up, even in the stories. Is this because of the new changes?

Also: no ads(I use an off-site ad blocker) and my block list is intact. I can’t think of anything else to check.

An oddity I’ve not seen before. The number of views and the number of visitors are identical, for both yesterday and today. Makes me think the system is not differentiating visitors from views. Happens in both Firefox and IE.

    • Lynn Hollander

      09/20/2013 at 1:40 pm

You could check that: Note your numbers, view a story/your profile twice, and note the numbers again.

  32. konarciq

    09/20/2013 at 3:07 pm

Same here. Tried the usual Firefox (23.0.1) and only get timed out and/or 503, 408 and 428 error messages (I think those were all the numbers I came across trying several bookmarked fandoms and 1 forum).
Then tried Internet Explorer (not sure which version) and only got the same result.
Tried everything but changing the dns server since I have no idea what that is and what it does. I’ll wait a few hours as Xing advises as an alternative 🙂
I’m in Germany btw, if that makes any difference.

(oh, and does *reboot* your computer simply mean shut it down and start it again? Not sure what the term means…)

Same issues, everything was OK until a few minutes ago and then lots of 503 errors interspersed with connection timeouts on a vareity of browsers and machines. Guessing there’s something wrong at the server end that will hopefully be fixed shortly.

It would be useful to know what the correct IP addresses we should be getting from DNS are as well.

I’m upset too. I also couldn’t update my story.
But I wouldn’t become mad or anything here…
Too soon to feel that way…
As far as I know, we’re not paying to use the site…
Sure, if this goes on for days, I might start pulling out my hair,
but situations like these are why fanfiction.net isn’t the only place my stories are saved…

    • Shooting Sword

      09/20/2013 at 3:49 pm

Just because you don’t pay doesn’t mean they can screw with us, especially us authors. Without us they wouldn’t have a site.
