Almost there…

22 Sep

All systems are operating normally thanks to staff working 14 hour shifts.  We have also implemented a work-around for the few users still having their DNS improperly pointed to our old location with Virgin Mobile and France Telecoms being the worst offenders.

Remaining tasks:

  • Fix a problem in stats gathering where unique users are not differentiated from simple views.

Well done staff, and hope that you all get a few days of operational perfection and can take a day off.

Is the problem in stats gathering likely to have had the effect of chapter skipping in reader views on stories? If the stats aren’t accurate, at least within the previous parameters of unique visitors and hits per page, there’s not much point in gathering them at all. Over the past two weeks (prior to the actual move of there were multiple instances of visitors hitting every page (as evidenced by leaving a review per chapter) but the hits returned in the stats showing that as many four out of a total of fourteen were not captured. At almost 25% error, it has reduced the statistics usefulness to nil.

Think of it this way. The final months count being off by 25% for a couple of days is better then being off by 100% for those two days. That’s at least the way I personally see it.

Thanks Xing and team for all the hard work to keep everything going!

So I’m guessing once all of this is finally sorted and put into the history books, the other projects will be worked? I would like to know other that other than the true pairing feature, what else is on the table. 😀

Oi, about the chick perpetuating the RTB genre. I hope she gets banned. Received a reply from Blair Partnership on her claim:

      Dear Spyridon,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we really appreciate you taking the time to do this.

As clearly explained in the email, any commercial publication of fan fiction relating to the Harry Potter series is not allowed, however we do not object to non-commercial fan fiction. This of course does not mean that using J.K. Rowling’s material verbatim is acceptable.

We have therefore forwarded this email onto the correct team who will look into it and handle accordingly.

Thank you again and best wishes,

      The Blair Partnership

      Email Photo

And Yemi, I forward the email as an Abuse Report to FFN so I hope they move quickly.

Here is a link to her profile as the site admins may move quicker this way and they really do need to deal with her asap as she is spreading the rumors.

They may want to check out her other works. Her Vampires Mate was starting chapter two also a copypasta of Twilight with word changes but now it seems to have gone to a paraphrased version.

      • Spyridon

        09/23/2013 at 3:09 pm

So I sent her a message through FFN and got the following reply:

hello i am having computer problems at the moment and i cannot get to my documents hense the long time with no updates i will sort out later

Okay, I understand that some people do get computer troubles but I find it a little suspicious that she updated the story about a week ago.

        09/23/2013 at 3:10 pm

P.S. What would be great if they had Rowling come out and say something about why RTB and other material verbatim of anyone’s work isn’t acceptable. She has enough influence that she could make some very drastic changes towards the better all around.

        09/23/2013 at 3:14 pm

@Yemi: Oh, that would be awesome as she did get everyone reading so maybe some will listen to her. I wonder where Robert is?

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/23/2013 at 3:25 pm

yemi – she’s not the only one with that on their profile – and the others have been reported ad nauseum as well.

Whether Ms. Rowling will choose to make a public statement regarding her position on the matter is unknown. I should think she would leave that to her barristers.

I have not published any of my numerous communications with the Blair Partnership to this blog because it states in the footer of each e-mail that its contents should not be disclosed to any party other than the recipient, and that only the recipient may place any reliance on the content of the e-mail. That, of course, is a legal formality to keep them from being misrepresented such as what the users posting the e-mails (falsified or not) to their profiles have done.

I suggest that anyone wanting to verify if Ms Rowling is in support of “read the book” fiction or any infringement of her copyright (changing the name/gender of the main character only), that they contact her agents and provide examples of what they are requesting information about. A general question will not suffice as that is where the misrepresentation stems from.

I’m not saying you are, Spyridon – I’m saying that asking “Can I write fanfiction based on Ms. Rowling’s books?” would be met with a yes while “Can I copy her text verbatim and include it in my story just changing Harry’s name to Sheila?” would be met with a resounding no. That’s why they have the legal disclaimer there though – so people don’t misconstrue their position, and instead actually ask them.

        09/23/2013 at 3:27 pm

I have no definite proof, but I believe Robert may have been the writer herself. Why else would he say, “I was under the impression that you and your associates didn’t believe I had any credibility to begin with to be honest.” Problem is, if this is true I can’t for the life of me figure out why she brought up the other writer.

      • Spyridon

        09/23/2013 at 3:35 pm

@Rogue: Don’t worry. I’m not taking offense. 😀 In my first email, I explicitly told them that any reply would be posted on the site’s blog. Writing that email took me a while as I wanted to be clear as possible in what I was trying to say.

      • Spyridon

        09/23/2013 at 3:40 pm

@Yemi: Didn’t see your post until right now. Actually, Robert and the author are two different people. Here’s the account that Robert is using to ask the author to post the image to a photo sharing site. Profile

If you compare the profiles, Robert’s in the US and the Author in the UK.

Plus, the author is claiming she’s in the clear as long as she disclaims it’s not her work. She’s also stating someone copied her story I think.

      • Spyridon

        09/23/2013 at 3:45 pm

So I was talking with her through FFN and suddenly I got a message that the user does not exist. Her stories are no longer there anyway.

        I wonder what happened?

      • yemi hikari

        09/23/2013 at 4:21 pm

I’m actually aware of that account. Interesting how it was created the same day things were posted. Also… you don’t have to live in the United States to set your account to the United States. You can set it to auto detect or you can physically change it to any country you want to. It’s the one down side to allowing people to select their country, but on the positive side when you take trips outside of the country or move you can keep the one country. This believe it or not is another way people who are smart enough can possibly figure out who a person is.

      • Spyridon

        09/23/2013 at 4:49 pm

@Yemi: Oh yeah, totally forgot about that quirk. Should I leave the image about the post from Blair Partnership or should I take it down now that it’s served it purpose?

      • yemi hikari

        09/23/2013 at 5:39 pm

Keep it up. You’ll find it handy if any person tries telling you that Rowling doesn’t have a problem with copy pasta again and other people can reference it.

@bienfait: Thanks but I just wonder about the other works that are in the RTB genre. I mean, the proof’s now out there and from the email, it looks like it’s enough to have the team that can handle the situation.

Well now you guys just need to improve the report feature. Ihave reported quite a few stories that wernt the property of the author yet said authors are continuing to write their ripped-off stories.

    • The Warty Hogg

      09/22/2013 at 2:27 pm

When the tech stuff is all finished, perhaps a few staff could be assigned a few eight hour days at least to responding to abuse reports. They have been ignored for weeks if not months and years in some case. Plagiarism and copyright infringement are as important to be ‘fixed’ as the statistics.

      • yemi hikari

        09/22/2013 at 4:10 pm

Having one day a week dedicated just to reports unless some major maintenance comes up would even work and they could switch the day so that people didn’t know when it was being done each week.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/22/2013 at 7:31 pm

Yemi, that would be viable for new reports, but they have a huge backlog they need to work through.

      • Lillian

        09/23/2013 at 12:14 am

Agreed. The system would work for new reports but the backlog is also something that needs to be dealt with.

      • BDG420

        09/23/2013 at 1:06 am

Agreed Hogg. I have been told by authors that do this that plagiarism does not exist on the site, which I know is a lie since it states in the ToS that an author shall not take another author’s work without consent. People need to learn that it won’t be tolerated. It has been several months without it being checked on, though I have seen stories disappearing just for a title alone.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/23/2013 at 11:01 am

BDG420 – I wish they would do the same for pen name alone – bitemehoe (4397647) is enough on it’s own, but that user’s profile image is beyond any consideration of propriety. Then there’s GravityFucks (3121114), Whoreasaurus (4599116), and Huge Erection (4444888).

Have sent a total of eleven reports on those over the last thirty days, and the accounts are still up. Along with their graphic and profane content.

        09/23/2013 at 12:58 pm

I see exactly what you mean Rogue and I wish that i hadn’t -_-. Who needs an image like that right where children can see it. That alone gives FF a bad image.

      • Lillian

        09/23/2013 at 1:29 pm

Another thing agreed upon, and then you have the users who think they can post really graphic content such as beastilty on the site (Yes, I saw a Harry Potter fic with such content in it.) and still nothing has been done. I’m still waiting for something to be done about the author I reported in the FF blogs, and again on the site.

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/23/2013 at 2:24 pm

Lillian – I’ve also found fisting (lots of that in Supernatural fandom), intercourse with a minor (and I’m not talking about sixteen – I mean a child), graphic rape being glorified and romanticized, authors claiming to be the original author only when called out on their thefts (one case that was just resolved after five and a half years of the original author attempting to get the stolen material, as well as the offender’s claims to be her removed…

The list goes on. It all needs to be resolved.

BDG420 – yes, it does give them a bad image. I’ve also found hand drawn images of naked children as avatars (not linking those). I’ve reported them as well – nothing. No response, nada.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask that at least the worst of it be resolved, that a priority be given to the reports, as I’ve mentioned on several occasions previous both in the blog and in support e-mails.

      • yemi hikari

        09/23/2013 at 3:12 pm

Yeah.. there is reason I’m not even bothering to look at the profiles you mentioned.

      • BDG420

        09/23/2013 at 3:52 pm

I can deal with lemons being written in stories as long as it is done in moderation and not a full blown smut fest. But if I am not mistaken child pornography, fictional and real, is against the law and against all morals. Those along with inappropriate images that people choose to use should be priority number one in order for this site to ‘save face’ so to speak.

thanks for the great service you provide and all your hard work.

now I’m curious could you add an option that allows users with accounts have an option to include M rating as default on story lists, please.

    • Simoneau

      09/22/2013 at 4:19 pm

Unless they are able to find a foolproof method of confirming that all registered users are over 18, allowing M rating is not a likely option.

      • General TheDyingTitan

        09/22/2013 at 5:03 pm

just have some sort of thing you have to agree to saying you accept any and all risks of reading M rated contemt

      • yemi hikari

        09/23/2013 at 3:15 pm

Problem one with what you said is it would have to be over sixteen and not eighteen as M rated stuff is sixteen and up. Second problem is that while this is the age guidelines some parents do let their fourteen and fifteen year old kids read M rated material because they trust them with said material. Some parents mind you are off but others are not.

    • Erica

      09/22/2013 at 5:28 pm

There was a suggestion of it being some kind of option to enable on the user’s account. Simoneau is correct if you meant an option on the filters, but if they could somehow manage to make options on a user’s account to have their preferences permanently in place (I can’t remember who suggested that from a previous blog post), then that would be the ideal.

      • General TheDyingTitan

        09/22/2013 at 7:17 pm

I guess I did not explain all that well on what I meant. I meant for an option of you account for when your logged in whether or not to see M rated content.

    • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

      09/23/2013 at 11:09 am

Just a thought for your consideration: When you’re asking them to add something to the site, it might be best if when they viewed your account, they were not to find any terms of service or content guideline infractions. You have an author’s note chapter, which is not permitted.

If you find it necessary to advise your readers that the story is being put on hiatus, I would simply modify the end of the last chapter with a note dated to that effect, as well as placing a note in the summary (rather than “cancelled” because honestly, that makes it look like troll work).

Also, you make the comment in several notes that you’re in high school. Which would, most likely, make you underage and not legally permitted to view MA material. I’m guessing that the reason you are wanting to set your default filter to “M” is because you are looking for material that is actually violating site terms in its pornographic content.

While that may not be the case, it is what users would use that function for. Since the admins are lax in removing the material, I do not believe that allowing such a default would be in their best interests.

      • General TheDyingTitan

        09/23/2013 at 11:24 am

i am not asking for MA rated content, there is a difference between M and MA, and BTW I am in my third semester of grade 12 so yeah im of age and I realise that I can not prove this but I was never asking for MA rated content, I was just asking for an option on your account to make it so you do not need to set the max rating of the stuff shown to M and if you looked at the rating info sheet M is 17+ and MA is 18+ and also I did not know with the authors note chapter, and its going to be brought down by my self anyways so it makes little difference. I was just asking for a small option to make the browsing of M rated content easier and more convenient that having to set the filters on every new page you visit

      • Rogue Mudblood (@RogueMudblood)

        09/23/2013 at 1:15 pm

My point still remains that it would be abused and that your account was in violation at the time of my post. If you’re wanting them to seriously consider requests that you make, you would need to make certain that you are not violating their terms and guidelines.

“Not knowing” tells me that you did not read the site guidelines that you were required to state you had before you posted that chapter.

I feel like I should also thank you for the site. I wasn’t into neither reading or writing any fanfics in the past (maybe because too many of them aren’t written too well… And sadly I ended up reading the bad ones…), but during this year I finally got into reading some good fanfics and then some more. Finally I decided to try and write something myself also. I’ve loved it ever since. Although one can’t obviously please everyone, I’ve gotten mostly good feedback. Which in turn gives me more courage to pick up more serous writing again in real life. It’s all thanks to your site and the people it brings together! 🙂

Interestingly enough on fandom page it put my story at the top (most recent posted) and said I had 35 chapters but if you click the story it’s only 34 and sub page 34 in the link for 35, still get Error 1 Message. It’s strange b/c my story’s been top for hours and it’s a very active fandom with lots of updates going on.

something is not right. Receiving notifications of new chapters, but the chapters are not loaded even though story lists are moving the entries as if they have been updated. Update dates not changed either. eg. Story Harry Crow by author Robst under Harry Potter put out notification more than 1 hour ago and chapter is still not loaded. No story in list from that point on is updated

    • marzydotes

      09/22/2013 at 4:58 pm

Thanks so much, Xing and crew! You guys have been working really hard these past few days (months and years for that matter), and it’s all really appreciated. Especially when you take time to listen and take into account what everyone says (rude or not).

Honestly, I know everyone has recently been bugging you to work on the reports, but after all the hard work you’ve guys have done, I think you should take more than a day break. You have also so many projects in the works, and it sounds like there’s a huge back up in reports for you guys, which sounds very daunting to get back to. If anything, it might be easier to slow down, work on those projects slowly, while at least taking one day of the week to work on the reports, so it doesn’t get overwhelming on that front and overall.

I have been on this site for around 11 years (with an account, 12 counting the whole year before where I was just a reader and lurker). I’ve been here before there were all this new additions and stuff, and while there have been some things I haven’t agreed about, that pales to how much I really just love this site to death and am very grateful you guys have not only created it but have faithfully maintained it through the years. This site has been a very huge part of my life. Thank you very much.

I’m not sure if this is a new problem, since I don’t often visit the forums, but I’m continually getting a 404 error when I click on a forum link. I’m on the mobile site using the most updated version of Chrome.

Other than that, great job guys! It’s good to hear that everything is coming along smoothly.

Am I the only one still unable to favorite any stories or authors? It’s been nearly a week since I’ve been able to favorite anything.

I can’t Fav or Follow anyone either. It has been about a week or more for me as well. 😡 its so annoying. I have to save all the links to new fics so I can go back to it later Instead of just clicking follow.

Good job guys! Keep up the good work! Transitions like that are so hard!

Thanks for the heads up on “stats” issues! (I was sad about how low stats were for September)

Well even if they’re just low, I’ll pretend it’s due to the new server so I can feel better…

    Hang in there!

Checking update chapters on three different browsers (Chrome, Firefox and IE) on Win XP with an Australian satellite connection, I’ve had no problems with uploading, editing, publishing, receiving email notification of the new chapters and being able to go straight to the new chapter via the email link, or using Search for the story and then clicking on the new chapter, so guessing that problem has been resolved completely.

    – Stats reported as the same number for visitor/view is the same but refreshing of stat data seems faster now.

    – I’ve had no problems with either favouriting or following a story or author and no problem accessing forum links, topics or posts or posting in a forum. SydneyWhites and Kit, have you tried clearing your browser cache, cookies and logging out then back in?

@SkysongFarm: Yes, I’ve cleared the browser cache and tried reopening the browser to no avail. I’ve also tried using Firefox and even IE (gasp!) to no avail. I simply don’t know what’s going on.

@SydneyWhite9, have you tried restarting the computer? I know in older versions of IE that was a quirk of the program – the cache would not fully clear until the computer itself had been rebooted.

I just have a question. When my readers leave reviews on my story, I can’t seem to read many of them. For example I have received 4 new reviews for my current story, but can only view 1 of them on the site, the other three aren’t showing up, and the count for my reviews aren’t going up either. Any idea why that is happening? Or am I the only one that happens to?

Well, have you checked the moderation queue for reviews? Maybe they’re anon and were placed there until you moderate them.

I understand that the site it undergoing repairs, however I am unable to “Follow and/or Favourite” any stories or authors for the past couple of weeks. Is anyone else having this problem? My browser is Safari.

The number of views/visitors is still exactly the same and still hasn’t been fixed and its been days. It really throws off the numbers as views/visitors are rarely exactly the same so everything is not fixed or accurate.
Its not just me other people I heard from have the same issue so if anything can give me an idea of when your taking care of this it will be much appreciated.

@Lucian – if you’d bothered to read Xing’s initial post on this thread, you would know that they are indeed working on it.

It occurs to me that if they deleted all those plagiarized stories and copyright infringements, they would free up a lot of room on those shiny new servers. Respond to abuse reports and clear space! A win/win for everyone.

@The Warty Hogg – imagine if they deleted all the rule-breaking One Direction stories…more storage space plus a much lower percentage of poorly conceived, plotless and clueless teenybrat wank material.

@Xing and @RogueMudblood, yes, I’ve done everything I’ve seen on the other forums. Nothing’s working. Still can’t favorite a thing.

I’ve been getting random notices of reviews all day today. I posted a new chapter and got a review notice about an hour before the notice of the chapter came to my inbox. When I looked at my reviews here on the site, I had three or four that I never got notices of in my email. Plus, other notices have been showing up at odd times. Is this related to the favoriting and views issues?

I do appreciate the work you’ve been doing. I’m just wondering if I’m the only one this is happening to.

Can you try this. Login, then logout, then try to save/favorite some stories.

Favorites are working for me. I use Google Chrome and Windows Vista, just incase that info might be useful to you. Best of luck getting any bugs or issues hammered out.

Avatars aren’t showing up again, slow loading time for profiles as well.

No problem with following or favouriting using Chrome, Firefox or IE on WinXP.

How long does it usually take to get a new community to appear? Not sure if this is a problem or not, but a reader has created a new community and has successfully loaded 44 stories to it but it is not appearing in the category listing with the filters set to Create Date. Is it a 24 hour thing before those listings are updated?

    • SkysongFarm

      09/24/2013 at 4:50 pm

Please ignore previous query on Communities. Despite a category being chosen on creation, it defaulted to General instead of the correct fandom and that had to be fixed. There are two followers on that community (email notifications confirmed) but no followers are showing on the listing. Since Number of Followers is one of the criteria on the search filters, it would be a BIG help if the followers field was updated with the new follower as soon as the email notification is sent.

Additionally, the description field in the community creation page is not updated to the listing shown for some time – why would that field be cached and unable to be updated?
