Pairing Mode Part 2

18 Oct

We have revamped the way pairing works to be more flexible and easier to use.

Major Changes

  • Updated Pairing Mode: Just add the characters, up to 4 max, and select the pair for each character. Up to two pairs can be selected. You can have 3 or all 4 characters be part of a single “pair”.  Please note the ordering of the pairs and characters are not important.
  • For the users that already created their pairs announced in Part 1 of the update, we will auto-upgrade your pairings to the new system within our next update.
  • Toned down the optional profanity filter used by forum admins. Many innocuous words and phrases that were incorrectly flagged have been removed.

Public searching ability for the pairs created by the new/updated pairing system will be active in the coming update.

Will the nocopy be sorted soon, isn’t that more important than pairings.

yes please fix the no copy it is quite annoying if an author puts a link to a song that you might want to look at after you read the chapter or if there is a funny part that you want to paste into a word document so you an look at it when ever you want. sorry if this sounds rude but i would like this to be fixed.

The ‘nocopy’ issue is due to sites like Flagfic that directly pull a story and make it available for download.

      Same with archiveorg.

They don’t like people making ‘archives’ of their site; hence why they block it and others from crawling.

Copyright issues, perhaps? I think that many authors would not want their work published on sites like archiveorg, especially people on fictionpress who get published and need to remove the story from the internet, where having it available on archive sites will hurt book sales.

This, of course, is assuming that it’s unintentional. But, if it was a bug, they’d probably have at least mentioned it somewhere by now.

(If they have just feel free to slap me ok?)

        10/18/2013 at 12:44 pm

Flagfic specifically got written premission from to run the site. That’s why the creator of it was so angry.

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 12:49 pm

They got permission? Then that is really lame in that case.

The actual blocking part is embedding in the CSS… It’s lame.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 12:53 pm

It’s not nocopy that prevents other sites from scanning a particular site though. For example… That sites been blocked long before the whole nocopy from archiving

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 1:00 pm

Some crawlers ignore the robots.txt, but the nocopy stops them, as well. I’m pretty sure thats what happened to Flagfic

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 1:18 pm

If they are actively blocking the sites, I know of a couple that are still working fine and they’ve already worked about it.

…if i may, those of us that use some reader programs need CSS to some degree…and not only that, but complicated scripts can interfere with the programs on occasion…so really this isn’t a solution everyone can use…though I do applaud you for offering up the opportunity to try.

I hope the automatically-thing about character to pairing will not be..

    • tiquatue

      10/18/2013 at 9:44 am

It’s not. The default is “no pairing” and you have to specify which pairing your listed characters belong to, if any. From what I can see, you can create threesomes and foursomes with this filter, too.

Much, much better system, IMO. Thanks for listening to us, Xing. Now, listen to us about the nocopy and continue working on those reported fics.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 12:55 pm

Yeah, but you can’t list only just one character. The other character for the pairing HAS to be listed.

Yes, please deal with this No Copy debacle. I would very much like to see a vocal stance on this, if you would be so kind. Here’s a few questions, and I would feel mollified for sure, if I could simply here your take on these matters:

What was the reason for implementing the No Copy/No Highlight feature?

Is there going to be any in site support in the future for those with disabilities? Also, what’s your stance on that? Would you be willing to offer some type of work around that allows these important programs to work for your site?

These issues are truly a concern for me right now, as they are for many others. Any sort of vocal response at all would be quite nice.

That isn’t a viable answer for everyone, unfortunately.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/18/2013 at 11:13 pm

The inability to highlight isn’t a major issue for me, since I always read fics on the site and tend not to quote fics in reviews. That said, I can assure everyone that screen readers can indeed read the fics without the ability to highlight words. So I’d guess it’s those with other disabilities who may find it challenging to not have the feature.

      • hpstar202

        10/19/2013 at 12:36 am

I know some screen readers may work but the program I have does not. The program I have needs highlighting. I am dyslexic and I like the program because it highlights the words as it reads and you can make notes in the program as it read. I got the program for school and I just use it for fun reading as well. I know that there are probably other program that I could buy that would work but I don’t think I should have to speed that kind of money for a nice one when I have a program that the site is blocking.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/19/2013 at 3:54 am

True. I don’t think text to speech should cost anything. Certainly not for help writing/reading. I have heard some people actually have highlighted text read aloud to see how it sounds for help with proofreading. Thought that was a neat thing since sometimes, spelling errors are caught better if the text is read aloud.

      • hpstar202

        10/19/2013 at 3:21 pm

Nice reading programs can cost anywhere from 200 to over 1000 dollars and nice speech to writing programs can cost 100 or more. There not cheap if you want a nice one. You can get free ones but they are not always the best quality. The one that they suggested for example is not really that good you can tell the voice is fake and not the easiest to understand. Mine is made to sound like it is a person specking and that takes money to make. The latest version of mine is 1395 dollars. I also like the program for when I am writing as it has programs to help with brainstorming and many other features. I have a lot of problems writing and I like how the writing features are connected to the reading program. The program reads what I write as I write which really helps. The program I have is an all around learning program not just a reading program so it is probably more expensive than most but why should I have to pay for more that one when I like that one I have. If this continues and they block the ways around it that I have now I will have to stop using the site cause I don’t have the money for another program.

Looks like it should be an improvement! Two quick notes: first, “Pairing” is misspelled in the title of this topic (small thing, I know, but we are writers….); second, possible bug?? – I added two characters just to experiment with the new pairing option, and now I find I cannot delete them from the Properties page. My story actually has only two main characters (Pairing A), so I need to be able to clear the other fields.

  5. BDG420

    10/18/2013 at 11:16 am

What about a system that prevents a story from being posted for low word count. I have seen a few stories that have just 2 words and that was ten mins ago.

    • Sparrow9612

      10/18/2013 at 11:53 am

I agree. There should be a limit to how few words are in a story. Should be about a thousand, maybe more. Personally, I read mostly those over ten thousand.

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 12:15 pm

I like long stories too but there are quite a few 100 words fiction challenges and drabbles and the like around, is it really fair to punish the majority who are honest for the few who are trolls?

      • animebookfangrl

        10/18/2013 at 12:20 pm

the only problem with your suggestion for the limit to be about a thousand, is the fact that some writers have one shots on fanfiction that are less than this and only 500 words.

      • BDG420

        10/18/2013 at 12:30 pm

If I’m not mistaken Tanya challenges are considered Authors Notes and should be posted in the forums, added onto a story that the author has written or the authors profile. As far as drabbles go, if the author chooses to do those then they can still do them but hold off on them and combine them into one chapter.

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 12:48 pm

Uh a 1000 words? I personally think not. I love drabble fics, and a lot of them never reach 100 words.

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 12:51 pm

@BDG420 No I mean people doing a challenge, IE, a 100 word challenge in which you must write a story with exactly 100 words… IE Drabbles

Actual written challenges should be posted in a forum yes

      • BDG420

        10/18/2013 at 12:57 pm

@Birdymain: Why do you think I said hold off on them and combine them into one chapter? I’m not saying not to write them.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 12:59 pm

Look, there already is a limit to how few words can be in a story. You have to have three lines of text whether they be lines of poetry or sentences. The reason the site admins have that rule instead of a word count is because there are things like drabbles and even haikus.

Not to mention the thousand word limit is absurd. The one site I know of that has a minimum word count is set at five hundred and I still have some short one-shots that need to be edited up despite the fact the one-shot is fine with the length it has.

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 1:02 pm

” lot of them never reach 1000 words :”

Lol had to correct it from 100.

      • BDG420

        10/18/2013 at 1:07 pm

@Tanya: Then how would you go about this if the admin and mods ignore reported ‘stories’? IMHO a word minimum is needed. It helps cut back on the flow of reports (even a little bit helps) and it will push people to be more creative and may bring in more fresh ideas.

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 1:15 pm

:\ Drabbles aren’t creative? One of the most popular stories I’ve ever read on this site was a drabble fic.

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 1:18 pm

@BDG420 “Quality over quantity” please and thank you, a story does not have to be 100,000 words long to be ‘creative’, in fact, I’ve seen quite a few stories that length that weren’t particularly inventive, and some that were 1000 or less that were VERY creative.

      • BDG420

        10/18/2013 at 2:07 pm

@Tanya:Read my question again or better yet allow me to rephrase myself. How would you go about in minimising trollfics (ex. stories that are 1 or 2, hech even 5 words long) If the admins and mods ignore almost all reported fics if your against a word minimum?

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 2:18 pm

I know the question isn’t directed at me, but the answer would be getting more admins.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 3:06 pm

I guess the best way to put it is this. The idea of adding in a minimum word count is in reality like the nocopy in the fact it punishes those who don’t break the rules but still allows those who break the rules to do so. In this particular case putting any sort of word minimum wouldn’t be fair to certain writers while the person who wants to break the rule will just slap in enough text to make it beat what ever minimum word count goes in. The solution is in the long run for the admins to do a better job, though I’m also going to say that adding in a way to filter for chapter length that someone else mentioned, it could make it easier to find and report these.

      • hpstar202

        10/18/2013 at 4:20 pm

I do not think a thousand would work as there is an entire filter for people who like under a thousand but more that two is good. They could do something like 50 or even 10 just to stop the blank stories or the 1-2 word ones.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 4:53 pm

As I’ve already said limiting the word count would hinder the poetry form the haiku which can be anywhere from three to seventeen words. Many are under ten words in length.

      • Birdymain

        10/18/2013 at 5:27 pm

There is quite a lot of poetry. I agree, a word limit would be a bad idea.

I’ve never encountered a story that’s been even 5 words or less.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/18/2013 at 11:24 pm

I vehemently disagree with a thousand words. I think one hundred is sufficient for a limit. I don’t read anything with less than that.

As for the idea of combining drabbles, I don’t agree. People should be able to post the way they want their story to be broken up. If drabbles must be posted together, there may be unrelated and confusing ones just to make up the ridiculous proposed limit.

    • fems

      10/18/2013 at 4:20 pm

While I’ve personally never encountered such “stories” I do think a minimum number of words is needed if there really are “stories” posted with two words. I prefer writing long stories and a thousand words is like 1/4th or less of a chapter for me but every now and then I also participate in a drabble challenge. The definition of a drabble is a story of exactly one hundred words and the format is quite popular in fanfiction, so I think a minimum of 50 words would be better considering a lot of drabble challenges are lenient in that “around 100 words” is good enough and thus some people will post ones that are closer to 70 words, for example.

If the minimum word count would be put higher than 50 and closer to a thousand there’s the risk that in a lot of (drabble) cases the author’s note will be longer than the actual story.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 4:54 pm

The fifty word minimum actually eliminates the haiku.

      • bienfait

        10/18/2013 at 5:56 pm

Word limits might be problematic. I have one story in which an important plot point turns on a telegram received by the main character. Fifteen words; the result (if I’ve done it right) being complete and utter despair. For maximum impact, I posted the telegram in its entirety as a single chapter.

At least it’s longer than a haiku.

  6. MsLyoness

    10/18/2013 at 11:29 am

Wait a minute, pairing order isn’t important? Why? If I have two pairings in a fic, one is definitely the main one and one is definitely a side one. You’re saying that my side pairing might come up first. I don’t understand why it seems to be so hard for you guys to get characters and pairings in order.

    • BDG420

      10/18/2013 at 11:46 am

It doesn’t make much sense to me. I never had any issues before finding my favoret pairings, just put the 2 characters in the tag selecter and boom you have your pairing. Thats how it’s been for quite some time if I’m not mistaken. As far as the no-copy thing, I support it. True there are ways around it but for the people that don’t know how to get around it just makes it harder as they have to actuality do manual work by typing every word in. They just need a way now to weed out the trolls, the people who write a word or 2 as a story. I say implement a word count minimum of say 1,000 words and leave it at that.

      • Tanya

        10/18/2013 at 12:55 pm

Not everyone can write 1000 words, and in fact there is an entire category of story called drabble that is around 100 words long, and it’s not just rubbish by trolls.

And even if you had a minimum word limit, they’d just copy paste some garbage in there to make it up…

I’d rather have, a word count of 2, that can be easily seen and ignored, than having a minimum 1000 word count that can blend in with genuine stories.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 1:06 pm

That word count minimum really pushes it. There is already a rule in place involving having at least three lines and the reason they have that specific rule is because of the three lined haiku people write which can consist of anywhere from three to seventeen words, but no more then that.

      • marmota-b

        10/18/2013 at 3:07 pm

Two of the 4 stories I have published now are under 1000 and I would certainly not wish to add to them just to bring it over a limit… In fact, being able to deliver a message under such a limit is really a writerly skill to be admired (experience with shortening articles for a magazine will teach you as much!).

A much, MUCH lower limit would certainly be better.

      • toeki

        10/18/2013 at 3:44 pm

well, a thousand words are a bit too much…with this criteria, most of my fics would be against the rules, for they have between 500 and 900 words and are fine like this…
and please, the thing about drabbles, haiku or the 221b challenges of the sherlock fandom are that they are still stories, even with the small word count…
i think you overestimate yourself a bit here… you just don´t have the knowledge or authority to tell an author that his story is not a story because it has too few words.
and, btw, i like to read shortstories between 200 and 1500 words, because when i come home from my daily work, i don´t have the time and energy to devour a 100thousand words fic.

btut honestly, debating minimum word counts is nitpicking and completely unimportant compared to the nocopy issue.

      • Ruri

        10/18/2013 at 9:29 pm

That word count would also hurt users that write in languages like Japanese and Chinese, since the word count here counts a serie of characters without spaces as one word. As a result, something in Chinese of “50 words” according to the system can easily be 50 sentences long, which can amount 2 pages on Word easily.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/18/2013 at 11:34 pm

If I’m not mistaken, the way filters work now, if you choose two characters, you get every story with them listed. This is unacceptable if you want to read them as a pairing. Since the character listings were increased to four, there’s a wider selection that gets included when filtering by pairing. So yeah, the way it works has changed.

      • yemi hikari

        10/19/2013 at 3:19 am

You do realize that they’re going to add something so you can look for specific pairings?

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/19/2013 at 4:05 am

@Yemi: Was replying to BDG’s comment about entering characters into the filter and getting pairings. Since they changed the character slots to four instead of two, it doesn’t work that way anymore. I perceived an inaccuracy in the statement that I was trying to correct. Please do not imply I’m not keeping up with site news by asking if I am aware of the current work on a pairing filter. Unless you were replying to BDG as well. But even so, that’s the same implication no matter who you were speaking to.

    • yemi hikari

      10/18/2013 at 1:04 pm

If you had taken the time to go and look at the new pairing feature you would realize that the two pairings are clearly listed off as “pairing one” and “pairing two”, so chances are there will be a way to identify the order of the pairings. What doesn’t matter is the order the characters are in or whether or not the pairings are in order when you mark them. That’s what I’m thinking.

I was amused to post a note with the word s m u t and have it censored. I thought it was already the euphemism for something stronger. And good work on deleting copyright infringements. You only have a few thousand ‘character reading the book’ stories left to do.
I do think you need to make it MUCH cleared in the TOS that ‘characters reading the books’ are forbidden if they copy directly from the copyrighted text.

Real classy, Tanya. Between this, your blatant disrespect and racist attitude toward Xing below, and your disregard for FFN’s TOS (continually posting how to bypass the no copy code), you’ve really shown your true colors.

      • Tanya

        10/19/2013 at 10:40 pm

@Guest, Why, yes, I am really classy, pointing out the simple, but most likely reason for a word being censored.

Adding things such as the no copy, shows that Xing doesn’t care about the users of his site, or he speaks little to no English and has staff to manage it for him.

Or maybe he speaks perfect English and still lets others manage it anyway.

Regardless, since there hasn’t yet been any official word on the no copy issue, it is quite clear that none of the staff give a toss.

And I’ll ‘disregard’ their ‘TOS’ as much as I like when they disrespect their users the way they have.

By the looks of things, I really doubt they care, otherwise, surely they would have deleted my comment by now. Just confirms what I said about the staff not caring. If they cared, then there wouldn’t be so many TOS violating stories around. Songfics, 18+ content, PLAGURISM, spam, RPF, reader interactive, ‘You’ stories. Need I continue?

And sure, I’ll show my true colours. They are the ones where I don’t care what internet tough guys such as yourself think of me.

I myself would like to see ‘tongue’ unblocked. I mean… what is so bad in it? That people can use the tongue for stuff that isnt appropriate to mention at places, doesnt mean you have to block it. Why didnt they block hand as well, or mouth? ._.
Once someone swore on my forum and I warned them with ‘Watch the tongue!’ Now it looks like I swore as well with it being starred out…

As a forum admin, I say the filter still needs work and I dont recommend for anyone to use it on their forum. I myself tried it out, saw what it did, and quickly disabled it.

I also see no problem in very mild words being displayed. ‘Crap’ for example is more funny than swearing, and one says daily that they feel like crap or their story is crappy. That is not a swear word either.

The filter would be ‘basic as you call it once only the major swear words are blocked. I would like to see a profanity filter in maybe three degrees:
      1. Basic – only blocks major swearwords.
      2. Medium – Blocks major and mild swear words
      3. Strict – blocks every little swear and malicious word

While I would like a way to be able to list pairings that only have one character who is a main character I think this pairing system is so far a major improvement. Does this mean you aren’t going to automatically make every story with only two characters a pairing?

Now take care of the nocopy issue. That’s far more important.

  14. fems

    10/18/2013 at 1:18 pm

I’m not sure why you couldn’t just automatically incorporate the already labeled pairs in this update, because now everyone whose pairings have previously been labeled by the author are now pair-less again until you finally come up with yet another update… It seems a bit silly and useless to have introduced it at all last time if this update has now (temporarily) removed the pairings again.

However, I am pleased to see labeling a pairing is now as easy as selecting which pair each characters belongs to, rather than how you handled it before.

There is still one thing that really bugs me and I’ve mentioned it in the previous blog as well as the first time you mentioned plans for a “true pairing feature”: if an author is allowed to put more than two people in one relationship (as they should, since you insisted on 4 character slots and thus threesomes and quartets should be allowed as well) then it’s not a pairing anymore, considering the definition of the word! Under normal circumstances I would probably just roll my eyes at the contradiction but this is a writing site, so I don’t think it’s too much to expect certain things like language and correct spelling, grammar and punctuation from the website.

On another note, I noticed you’ve removed the “7 days” in the “remember me” option for signing in, yet I don’t seem to be permanently logged in since I had to sign in yet again to check out the improved ‘pairing’ feature. Is the “remember me” option a permanent one? If so, could you please make it so it’s actually permanent rather than requiring me to log in every week or so?

      10/18/2013 at 1:24 pm

I enabled the pairing for one of my fics but I still don’t see an actual indication of said pairing in-story. Is this simply belated or won’t there be a distinction made between pairing and ‘regular’ (main) characters? It seems odd that a not-yet-implemented pairing filter would be the only way separate/find fics with pairings when you’ve gone through all the trouble of adding a “pairing feature”.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 2:56 pm

That’s because that part hasn’t been implemented yet just like the last part of the four characters where you can actually see all four characters universally hasn’t been implemented yet.

      • fems

        10/18/2013 at 4:34 pm

Yes, wouldn’t it be nice if they would finally fix the showing of all the used character slots in-story and on an author’s profile? It’s been months since they’ve introduced the two extra slots yet the displaying of characters listed hasn’t been updated and it can even be misleading now if it’s labeled romance, considering the characters are listed alphabetically in most cases and there isn’t any distinction between the new pairings and regular characters either. Hope we don’t have to wait months for that too… That is, if they even get around to ever fixing it. Hopefully before the end of the year.

I wouldn’t say that he doesn’t listen, more along the lines that some things go over his head. The nocopy… that was asked for awhile back by some of the people paranoid about their stuff being plagiarized. Which is why they’re going to implement a way to disable it that is hopefully off by default. I still don’t like that though because there are certain people who break the site rules who will try and use the nocopy to prevent people from reporting them.

You can just copy the address and send it through your email. It’s an email address.

As for a translation, that’s a tricky situation. When was the last time they updated any of their fics? If it’s been a couple years and you’re sure they’ve left I would go for the translation as long as you point out that it’s not your fic and point where and who the original creator.

Have you tried messaging the author? You get those in your email, the author may see it and answer you a yes or no.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but I can’t figure out how to work the pairing feature. At least, when I read over the properties page, I don’t see a pairing section or whether the pairing I want has been created. I’m blind, so please don’t judge me. I could use some guidance as to which buttons I should be pressing or what I can do to turn the mode on or off because that’s disappeared according to my screen-reader as well.

      10/18/2013 at 4:18 pm

I don’t have a good understanding of how screen readers work so I will try and explain how a sighted person can set pairings and hopefully that will give you enough information to make it work for you.

Go to publish then click on manage stories then click on the story you want to add pairings too.

At the very bottom of the screen there is a section labeled characters. Now by each character you have listed there is an x to the left of the character name which deletes them when you click on it and an up arrow on the right on the character name which when you click on it opens up a menu. The menu gives three options: no pairing (default), pair A and pair B. So is you want to make John and Sue a pairing and leave Jane as no pairing you would leave Jane alone but click on the up arrow next to both John and Sue and click on Pair A.

      Hope this helps!

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/18/2013 at 11:51 pm

Thank you. Those instructions were perfect! What they need to do is when a pairing is created, somehow update the page to show this textually. Like: “Pairing A: X/Y, Z.” This way, it’s clear what changes will be saved. Right now, there’s no indication to a screen reader that anything has happened.

    • fems

      10/18/2013 at 4:27 pm

Each character now has a little button to the right of their name which gives you a drop-down (well, more drop-up, but whatever) menu that allows you to pick between ‘no pairing’, ‘pair A’ and ‘pair B’. To remove the character themselves you have to click on the little X to the left of their name, instead of double-clicking the character’s name as was the case prior to this update.

You know, I wonder how the color coordinating system will be appreciated by those who are colorblind. I remember my one of my professors asked if the colors he was using was alright to the class one day and if there were any colorblind people. I didn’t even realize that color coordinating something might not work for color blind people especially since I think that some colors that work for one type might now work for another type. If I remember the questions my professor asked the student (turns out there was one colorblind student in my class).

Just throwing that out there. I’m not colorblind myself.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 10:34 pm

@ Spyridon ~ Thankfully the color coding isn’t two colors on the opposite sides of the color wheel. Usually when people are color blind they thankfully are only color blind to a particular color spectrum. Those who aren’t… at this point they’re out of luck but this gives another reason why the pairing system should be separate as people won’t have to worry about color coding. Otherwise they have to go in my hand.

Off-topic, but I have been sporadically e-mailing the site’s support e-mail for literal years, and have yet to receive a response.

I have an account, have had one for over a decade now, but have not been able to log in for years. My e-mail address is clearly associated to it — I still regularly receive notification e-mails for when people like my writing — and yet when I try to log in, it tells me my password is incorrect. When I try to reset my password, I get the following message: ‘Invalid email address. ‘[my e-mail]’ is not registered with the site.’

So basically, I’m locked out of my account. And whomever monitors’s support e-mail is either not getting my requests for assistance, or is ignoring them. Can I get some kind of an assist here?

I absolutely love the idea of the pairing system, I think it is definitely going to make things much easier. If I could suggest something though. Maybe an option to put one character in two separate pairings, sort of signaling a love triangle. Just a thought, being as I see so many love triangle fics out there, it might make it easier for people to either search for them or filter them out.

    • yemi hikari

      10/18/2013 at 10:36 pm

Uh, adding three people into a relationship would probably translate to threesome for most people. A love triangle would be displayed by A/B and A/C to indicate character A has a romantic relationship with both B and C (not necessarily simultaneously though) throughout the story.

Actually, what you wanted to make “easier to use” has turned out to be an annoyance to me 😦
I want to read stories that are featuring only two certain characters. Not three, not four. Only two. And It’s really frustrating me when I’m searching for stories to read, only to be disappointed because one of those two characters is being paired up with someone else, seeing as the other two options must be occupied by another pair of characters.
Wouldn’t it be better if we could also choose how many characters we want in a story between 2 and 4? It would be much easier and I wouldn’t be so angry all the time…

I like the idea of the new pair system but to me it looks like it still has a few bugs.

Now my main concern is still the nocopy. They changed it again you can no longer select all and copy. The ways around it are helpful as it means that I can still use my reading program. I don’t like having to go around the rules but how am I suppose to read the stories if I don’t with this knew nocopy system. I know they say that author will be able to turn it of but what about the one that are no longer on the site. I know people ask for the nocopy but It is not really helping. There still so many ways around it. I think that it should be turned off or disabled by default. Having nocopy as default is helping no one. If a person it worried about people stealing their work. Than they can turn it on. Automatically blocking copy is doing know one any good. The people who left clearly did not care if there stories were read, copied, and many times finished when they left or they would have taken it down. Many time when the leave the put up a note saying people are welcome to enjoy and if want finish the work. People should not be stopped from enjoying the work that they left for us to enjoy. If people who are still on the site care they will turn the nocopy on it is that simple.

The people who left clearly did not care if there stories were read, copied, and many times finished when they left or they would have taken it down.

In the majority of cases the answer is yes… they don’t care enough. Sometimes people lose their accounts and other times writers pass away.

      • Ballroom

        10/18/2013 at 5:51 pm

It’s not that they don’t care. It is possible that they don’t know. This site is for reading and writing fanfiction. Not reading, writing, AND copying fanfiction. People don’t expect their stories to be copied. They probably left their stories here for others fans to read. That doesn’t mean they’ve given permission for anyone to copy them. They only gave permission for people to read via the site.

If a person didn’t care, they would have deleted their stories forever. Instead they are nice enough to continue sharing their work with fans even if they never upload a new story.

Realistically, a person cannot write fanfiction forever. It’s not about not caring enough and that’s unfair to say.

On that note, I was wondering if those accounts that have cold should be moved to another server that would be like an archive. That server would not be affected by new updates and would keep to the older style of FFN so those updates don’t mess with how the original authors left it. If should the author ever come back, then the accounts can be returned back to the main archive.

EDIT: I was wondering if the profile account should have a bar that states something like ACTIVE, ON HIATUS, ABANDONED, Not writing at the moment, etc.

Just so authors can let their readers know that they’re on a break or can’t be reached for a business trip or something.

        What do you guys think?

      • hpstar202

        10/18/2013 at 9:34 pm

I did not mean they did not care about the stories. I was more taking about them not worries if you copy the story to say an ebook to read on a plane or for me my reading program. They left them for you to read and this nocopy stops me from doing that. I need my program and they are no longer here to enable me to read their work. I think I just phrased it bad. Their are also author who leave and open invitation for anyone who want to to finish their stories.

      • yemi hikari

        10/18/2013 at 10:29 pm

@ Ballroom ~ I had to think about what I wanted to say in response to what you wrote for a bit but here it is. Prior to ffnet existing and the early days of the site the way to share fanfiction was through mailing lists. Thus people expected their stories to be copied and passed on to others. Even when people started posting stories on ffnet people expected people to print out their stories by copying them into word documents as it was cleaner so they didn’t have to read them online. My point is if you post something for free you also expect people to copy and print your works as required under fair use. So there is none of this “they only gave permission for people to read via the site.”.

I also don’t agree with the statement “if a person didn’t care, they would have deleted their stories forever.” In most cases the reason the older stories are there is because the writers lost interest to the point they don’t remember they have an account. That’s actually not the right words for it because they do remember writing fanfiction and they do remember having an account. Their apathy is to the point the work is insignificant one way or another to them usually because said work has no way of being traced back to them as they didn’t put anything that can identify them in the work and/or the stories aren’t that good in the first place.

Mind you, abandoning the stories doesn’t mean they gave people permission to plagiarize from them, but copying stories under fair use is not the same as plagiarism. It doesn’t matter how bad the story is I’ve only ever come across a few people who were apathetic about their stuff being plagiarized and for some it was because they didn’t understand that what the other person was doing crossed the line.

@ Spyridon ~ The best way to take care of the older abandoned accounts is to make it so that the changes don’t automatically effect said accounts in the first place unless of course you’re talking about something like your suggestion that would automatically mark an account as abandoned. I’d rather they be marked as being on hiatus though because marking them as abandoned makes them a target for plagiarists.

P.S. While the site admins have been making it so that you can’t download fic through certain sites anymore I am pleased to find out that I can still run stories through a plagiarism checker. Still don’t like the nocopy.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/19/2013 at 5:30 pm

Have to say I side with Ballroom. I posted fics to be read on FF. It’s the only archive I post to because it’s the most well-known and as much as the silly smut restriction annoys me, at least it also discourages a deluge of poorly written, distasteful offerings. Wouldn’t want my work on a site that allows RPF, for one. I think that reflects badly on me as a person.

I feel the comment about fanzines and such is irrelevant now because of the prevalence of the Internet. Everything has gone digital and expectations need to change in line with that. THe problem, for me as an author, is that plagiarism is a major concern. I had someone plagiarize snippets of a character profile in an RP and I got angry. Really angry. How much more so for a fic, even if derivative? I still worked hard to write it and plan it. So I have a problem with the idea that people can copy text and claim it as their own, or keep it in an archive even after the site no longer exists or what have you. That’s why I myself do not copy fanfics. It feels wrong somehow.

On the other hand, people have brought up very legitimate points about the need to have copies for offline reading or even just to interpret and read, period. And really, I sympathize with consumers who honestly just want to use the material for their own personal enjoyment, without intent to claim undue credit or monetary gain. Trouble is that the bad people always ruin it for the honest ones. And should someone really keep their door unlocked merely because the majority of people aren’t going to break in or assault the occupants? No. We lock doors because of the few we cannot trust. So people will plagiarize. Fine. But I don’t see the need to make it easy for them. I think it just shouldn’t be assumed that an author will be okay with their work being saved on someone else’s devices unless given explicit permission to download it.

Well, I’m neither able nor willing to spend hours sitting on a PC or a laptop to read mulit-chaptered stories from the monitor. I’m also not willing to spend hours using a way around the nocopy-thing to copy and paste each single chapter into a .txt file just in order to create one big file that I can read comfortably from my e-book-reader.
Which means, I’ll simply stop reading stories here.
There are enough alternatives out there that do not their best to chase their readers away.

I also wonder if it could ever be possible for an author to have more than one C2. Perhaps one per fandom and a general or something to that effect. Sometimes we don’t want a general one, but do have favorite stories we’d like to store in a C2 in individual fandoms. It’s certainly not a priority, but something I feel could be interesting.

Also, perhaps a sorting option for Alternate Universes and/or Alternate Timelines? I’m not sure if that would go under “World” or not (though it’s probably the best place for it), but sometimes people want to search for those, and sometimes they want to opt out of them.

Something you may want to resolve Xing is that the cache numbers in story communities are way off, i.e they tend to be over the number of stories that really are in the community.

Is anyone else having issues with e-mail alerts in that they are not coming through via e-mail? As well as moderating reviews feature not working?

      10/18/2013 at 6:57 pm

Do you mean alerts for stories or reviews etc? At the moment I’m only subscribed to one story and it hasn’t been updated, so I’m afraid I won’t be much help in that area. Nothing amiss with my stats/alerts either as far as I can tell, although I haven’t enabled moderating guest reviews because I think it’s unnecessary.

Never mind, I just received an alert that someone’s following me so I guess my alerts are working fine. Perhaps yours are ending up in your spam folder?

I’m talking about both on my account they are just not working, I get no e-mails for alerts and nothing for reviews. I have tried all steps for Windows Live mail but nothing seems to be working I’ve also tried to reset the e-mail (this was the only time I received an e-mail) I have put fanfiction e-mail as a safe e-mail and I know it was working as it worked before the upgrade but stopped working after. I’ve sent 3 e-mails to support but have not gotten any reply.

        Hi Hpstar.

I have made sure that is a safe e-mail, I have also found that despite putting moderate guest reviews settings guest reviews just go through anyway, which makes me think that there’s something wrong in the account itself.

Xing, will it eventually be possible for all of a story’s listed characters to show up on all pages the story is on? It’s nice that you can see them on the main pages, but they should also be visible on the author’s profile and on the “Select Story” page in Manage stories. Both of those only show the first two characters listed.

    • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

      10/19/2013 at 12:13 am

I agree. It’s a pain to have to click each story just to check the character listings. Don’t understand why pages in our admin interface don’t reflect immediate changes like that when it works correctly in the directory.

        10/19/2013 at 12:24 am

That’s not happening. Read this: . It has the original announcements made by Xing about chat/script format stories, choose your adventure and second person. It even explains it for you why it was banned.

Not only that, but script format is nothing more than dialogue with stage direction. A majority doesn’t like to read it, myself included. Many don’t see it as a form of writing at all. Also, Xing chooses what is allowed and not allowed. I say bravo on banning it Xing, keep it.

P.S: On the word limit discussion, there was, once, a rule that chapters couldn’t be less than 500 words. I haven’t seen that rule since 06, along with the beta tester requests. So, they did have a rule against stories less than 500 words, I don’t know what happened to it, but it did exist.

      • yemi hikari

        10/19/2013 at 3:16 am

I’ll argue that script format is a form of writing but it is not the form of writing used for novels and short stories. It’s form of writing serves another purpose entirely.

That link is golden. Thanks 🙂

And that user has a lot of other interesting records on file too. I hadn’t realized the infamous MA ban in 02 was simultaneously announced with the official ban for RPF (then called RPS). Lol, how history repeats.

    • The Imaginatrix

      10/19/2013 at 12:01 am

I actually agree with this one as well. My friend and I write private RPs using the PM feature and we write in script format. It’s actually a story, if a random one. I understand why the scripts were banned, though. I’ve seen a few old ask-the-character fics and others that broke not only the script format rule but other more important ones as well. Those fics are banned regardless of formatting, so scripts as a style shouldn’t be banned. They can and have been done right.

      • bogman16

        10/19/2013 at 12:07 am

I’m so glad that you agree with me, I mean people should be able to use Script format to tell which is which because that way I look at story format is that it’s just a bunch of words crushed together like one big sentence

      • yemi hikari

        10/19/2013 at 3:15 am

And they can just as easily be done in regular story format. A script is in the long run an incomplete work that is meant to be adapted into something else.

    • hpstar202

      10/19/2013 at 12:55 am

I don’t like to read script. That said I read the link and don’t understand why it is banned. They say that script is like chat format and sometime it can seem that way. That said what about all those play that we have to read in school. I know most of my friends and I hated reading them but there are people out there that like reading plays. Which is that not what a script is the online of a play or movie.

      • Lillian

        10/19/2013 at 1:11 am

Okay, picture it this way. Would you rather read a story with descriptive details or a story that is just dialogue with stage direction like this:

Leni: This sucks! We can’t we do the Character’s Read the Book fics?! It’s just not fair!!

(Enter Leni’s best friend stage right)

        Marie: What’s not fair?

There really isn’t much to go on when it comes to imagination. This format is fine when you want to perform it on stage, but not appropriate for a writing site like this. This site is suppose to give you the experience of an actual writer. Chat/Script format is basically just a lazy, un fair, means of users getting out of trying to do any real writing (*cough* descriptive writing*cough*). It may be fun to write, for some, but it is best left for a site that allows it.

      • yemi hikari

        10/19/2013 at 3:13 am

Unless the writer is really good at writing dialog I would rather read a descriptive story. Truth of the matter is dialog is something most writers struggle with and writer’s who have the ability to write stories that use a lot of dialog are rare and even rarer are writers who can write dialog only stories with two characters.

Also, while a play is a way to tell a story it is incomplete without the visual, while a novel is complete without it. There is also a reason why script isn’t allowed for NaNoWriMo and was separated into Script Frenzy when they still ran it. Also comics are books too, but they aren’t allowed on the site either.

@ Spyridon and yemi hikari ~ I DO think the profile account should have a bar that states SOMETHING at least: ACTIVE, ON HIATUS, even – ABANDONED! Yes.You think about cheaters who plagiarize on others’ stories… Good. But guys, why none of you care about fic-translators that first get fascinated with a certain story and ONLY THEN (because of absence of any kind of appropriate warnings!) – clarify that the story IS UNCOMPLETED (when they read the other users comments like “please update soon”) and furthermore the Author of the story doesn’t respond his/her PM?…
What the fic-translaters should think in this case?
And my question is: Should such cases (when Author doesn’t respond PM for a long time) should be clarified and treated like VIS MAJOR? (unordinary cases) and the most important thing: under such circumstances should the fic-translaters get free (by administration) of laying undoable claims like Authors’ written permissions (because of the absence of the Author himself)?

    • fems

      10/19/2013 at 10:27 am

What? Why should you automatically be given permission (by the admins) to translate someone else’s story just because the author hasn’t responded to you?! That’s ridiculous. Also, FFnet is a writing site, not a translator site. I don’t get why people want to translate someone else’s fic anyway, just write your own story if you want to publish something.

      • Luss Vales11

        10/19/2013 at 11:48 am

Let me explain the key point: It’s not just the Author doesn’t respond me (or ignore, because think i
‘m not deserving his/her attention enough to give me the permission) The Author hasn’t said – NO!It’s because the story hasn’t been renewed since 2006 and I suppose the Author has no idea that I PM him/her by some problems due to his/her account… That’s why I hope this case is going to be concerned (by admins) as an extraordinary one.
If I get a chance to start off by translating of course I will point
        1. The Author
        2. the site where I found it
        3. Warnings the fic is not completed and possibly abandoned
I’m not going to plagiarize the other one’s story in any way! I just want to translate it into foreign language to give others a chance to read and enjoy a good story as well. Is that a bad or blamable thing, to your mind?
You don’t understand why someone just translate, but don’t write his/her own story?
Well… I’d like to ask you a counter-question Why someone becomes Formula 1 driver but the other one is becomes just – onlooker?
And I think, every Author would like his work to be translated into foreign languages…

      • fems

        10/19/2013 at 12:43 pm

Just because an author has abandoned the site (or perhaps has a new email address and thus doesn’t receive your PMs) doesn’t mean their story is free game. The ‘rights’ of the story still belong to the author and FFnet admins have no say about them.

As for your question about Formula 1 drivers and onlookers: I don’t know, never got the fascination with watching other people work/sport either.

Also, as an author myself I can say that not every author wants their story to be translated into a foreign language. As a matter of fact, I know a couple of authors who have declined someone’s offer to translate their story and that’s something I completely understand.

A few days ago there was the suggestion of merging the beta database with one for translators, either in this blog post or another (recent) one and in it, I already stated several reasons as to why someone might be opposed to another person translating their work. The most important one is that the original author has no way of verifying whether their story is being done justice as they most likely don’t speak the foreign language (or not well enough, otherwise they could have translated it themselves) and thus can’t check the quality of the translation. It could make their story look awful and badly written if it’s not done properly. Also, there is no way for them to interact with their reviewers, since they have no access to the reviews (only the author who publishes the story does) and considering it’s specifically translated for a small group of non-native speakers the reviews are most likely in said foreign language too so the original author cannot read, let alone respond to said reviews.

So, really, there isn’t any added benefit to the actual author of the story to having someone else translate it, but it can reflect badly on them and their writing ability.

      • yemi hikari

        10/19/2013 at 1:33 pm

Some peoples strong point is in translations and translating anything is great practice.

However… if you don’t have permission from the writer you should absolutely “not” be translating their story. No, seriously… this isn’t like writing fanfiction for other peoples fanfiction and its why I said awhile back if the site had a true translator system (system… not program) translators would always need to have permission from the original writer. It would have to be linked to a persons story directly and not be a separate entry. And then there is the problem with the fact the writer doesn’t know if it is a good translation.

considering it’s specifically translated for a small group of non-native speakers the reviews are most likely in said foreign language too so the original author cannot read, let alone respond to said reviews.

I actually have already gotten reviews from non-native speakers that I’ve had to translate with a translation program and I use a translation program to reply. It’s not that big of a deal really.

But definitely absolute NO translation if NO permission from the WRITER is given.

      • bienfait

        10/19/2013 at 3:26 pm

@Luss Vales 11 – as a writer who sometimes uses a great deal of wordplay, I have to point out that your claim that “every Author would like his work to be translated into foreign languages” is actually incorrect. Some things can never be translated in a satisfactory manner.

I certainly would not want my stories translated without my permission, even if said permission can’t be obtained (for example, if I’m dead).

      10/20/2013 at 2:13 am

Doesn’t AO3 have a page for ‘Orphan’stories that the authors have decided not to finish and have declared open to anyone who wants to take a shot at it?

I definitely don’t think unfinished stories should be taken over by the site after a certain time, but perhaps there could be a page where authors could post the ones from whom the muse has fled, leaving them on ‘indefinite hiatus’, and drop them for anyone else to adopt.

At least one or two conditions would have to apply for stories rescued from this ‘pound’. That the new author would have to respect the intended rating, or, gen, slash, het, for instance. No changing characters and settings to reassign to a different fandom.

I don’t know that such a page would ever see much use. I get the feeling, after all, that most stories are not deliberately and decisively abandoned, but that the author simply looses momentum. However, this site is far larger than most of us can envision, so perhaps there would be enough traffic to justify this.

I’m not really comfortable with the idea, but if it can be made to work in other places, perhaps it should go on the back burner to be examined here.

  34. Luss Vales11

    10/19/2013 at 2:10 pm

    Well, I ‘m getting your points…
I’ve never considered the things in this way, sorry for that, just because I’m not an Author and never been a one. Not everyone can be treated as a good author… But this doesn’t mean I’m lack of skills in translation as well))
Your message was more helpful, indeed (if to be honest)).
If there is a new email address, so, is that possible for admins to contact the Author and then let me know about that?
And for God’s sake, ADMINS of this site! Which of you is responsible for “the missing authors”? Who is competent authority?
Isn’t there anyone who could help me??
    P.S. A beta-reader with language skills – is a brilliant idea!

    • fems

      10/19/2013 at 2:42 pm

No worries. Glad to hear I managed to clarify things for you and show you a different point of view on the matter.

If a member is no longer using the email address registered in their account, I doubt there’s anything the admins can do about it unless they get an error message or something (but that only happens if the email disappears, not when someone stops logging in) and use the back-up email address, provided the author was around at the time this extra was introduced and they listed another email address – one they still check.

In my opinion, if you cannot contact an author and they have not given permission to translate their story (they could have something on their profile or in their story’s disclaimer) then you should simply give up. There’s nothing else you can do about it and I’m sure there are plenty of other authors still around that you could ask for permission to translate their stories. Or, you know, start writing your own (Russian) fanfic, instead of translating other people’s work. I imagine that would be much more satisfying, especially if you get positive feedback which, in this case, would belong to you and you alone, not the original author whose work you ‘merely’ translated.

    • bienfait

      10/19/2013 at 3:44 pm

Nobody is “responsible” for the missing authors. One of the features of ffnet and fictionpress is privacy – the only point of contact the admins have with the members is via their email address. So if the writer is not responsive to private messages, the admins are in no position to harass them on behalf of other members. Nor indeed should they do so.

Seems to me, if you can’t contact the writer via private message, you must simply let that story go. There are hundreds of thousands of other stories on the site. Why put so much effort into trying to get permission for this one story?

The writer has apparently moved on. Perhaps it’s best if you do the same.

  35. fems

    10/19/2013 at 2:36 pm

    @ yemi

Considering English is not my native language I think I’m well aware of the plus sides of translating and different languages.

I’ve had a couple of non-native reviewers leave me messages/reviews written partly in their native language simply because their command of English wasn’t great and in most cases I managed to respond just fine as I happened to be familiar with said languages. I’ve never had to resort to translator programs for such purposes, however I’ve already pointed out (in the blog that introduced the new translation tool) how incredibly incorrect those programs can be. Now, if you keep your review/reply simple then you’ll most likely manage to get the message across but using such programs can also give you the wrong meaning of certain words, thereby changing the meaning of the review/reply. So, it’s not something I would recommend.

Still, the comment you quoted was more in regards to the original author not having access to the translated story’s reviews (well, they could read them like everyone else but not respond directly, unless resorting to PMs) and therefore being unable to reply even if they could understand what the review said.

    • yemi hikari

      10/19/2013 at 4:00 pm

Actually, you can respond to ANY review whether you are the writer or not. The real issue is that the reviews should be going on the original story an not the translation I think.

Thanks for advices but I’ll merely give up…
I don’t know what is special with that story but it struck me, definitely.

  37. Luss Vales11

    10/20/2013 at 5:48 pm

Are you all really concerned about what word will feature the relationship when there is more than “two” characters? Of course it’s not “pairing” and not “relationship” – it’s not concrete enough .
Well… may be “love triangle” or… TRIPTYCH (my favorite word) when it comes to define relationship between Draco/Hermione/Blaze? 🙂

    • Simoneau

      10/21/2013 at 3:09 pm

“Triptych” is the wrong word entirely. Perhaps you should look up what it actually means.

      • Luss Vales11

        10/22/2013 at 3:06 am

        Oh, my goodness!
Hmmm…you mean it’s one of that… “indecent” words widely used in fanfiction, like – “lemon” and “lime”?
        I didn’t mean that at all….

  38. Luss Vales11

    10/22/2013 at 3:38 am

“triptych” actually means – series of three stories. But sometimes used for description of the most widespread and glorified feelings… for ex: the famous triptych with Draco/Luna/Harry or Draco/Hermione/Blaze.. I mean tripled relations.
Ok, then why not – tripling?

    • Simoneau

      10/22/2013 at 3:13 pm

No. “Triptych” means a set of three connected visual art works, generally but not exclusively in the form of three panels attached with hinges, the central one being revealed only when the two outer panels are opened out.

The word you’re looking for is “trilogy”.
