22 Oct

On Oct/23rd @12AM US PST (GMT -7:00) time we will have a short period of about 1 hour where newly submitted stories will be delayed in showing up in the search engine or be available for browsing in the categories.

    ok now its showing.

I wonder what kind of maintenance is this going to be?

You do realise you have tons of users who’s time zones make it daytime, right?

    • bienfait

      10/22/2013 at 10:38 pm

I think they do; but if you want to find a timezone where they have no users at all to be inconvenienced, it’s going to be a little tough.

I guess they’ve chosen what seems to them to be the best available option.

    • birdymain

      10/23/2013 at 1:58 am

There really isn’t a best time zone. So they’re just going for what’s late for them.

I used fanfiction downloader to capture the stories my late friend wrote. Her family may be wiping such things from the internet (to keep spammers from accessing her email addresses) and I wanted a copy to remember her by. So there are other reasons to allow downloading fic. I admit this is a rare case, but still…

      • tiquatue

        10/23/2013 at 3:36 pm

Sorry about that, birdymain. I meant to reply to you further down the thread.

umm flagfic? r u blocking them? they said they got permission

    • bienfait

      10/22/2013 at 10:37 pm

Flagfic didn’t get permission from me, personally, to download my stories. So unless they do contact me, personally, and get my permission, or until some other means of protecting my work is put in place, I would prefer flagfic to be blocked.

Now do stop banging on about it, please. You’re growing tedious.

      • Birdymain

        10/22/2013 at 11:10 pm

Lol. They’ve only mentioned it once per blog the last few. I would also like to know if they are blocking the site on purpose. That’s only one of the questions I’d liked answered. A firm answer would be nice.

        10/22/2013 at 11:57 pm

        Well phrased, bienfait!

I don’t mind if a reader copies and pastes my story from FFN for their personal use, but the idea of a third party site serving up my work makes me wary. I post on FFN, not Flagfic. The same goes for other third party sites I’ve seen mentioned on the blog. I’m all for FFN blocking them.

      • bienfait

        10/23/2013 at 12:13 am

@Guest – my sentiments exactly. Once other sites start sneaking off with my stories, who knows where it will end?

By all means, let ffnet readers copy and paste for their convenience. But flagfic, and any other such parasitic entities, can kindly keep their hands off.

      • yemi hikari

        10/23/2013 at 12:23 am

To be honest the only third party sites I’m comfortable with are the ones that are created to scan web pages for plagiarism. They simply look for potential cases in plagiarism.

Will I am a reader and I am for flagfic as I do not have internet access daily and download completed stories to my Ipad. A lot of writers are putting their stories on other sites that support flagfic so they obviously do not mind their stories being copied for personal use.

      • Armnorn

        10/23/2013 at 9:49 am

In my opinion they should enable a feature that let’s the authors of each story decide if they want their stories to be downloaded. They could offer the files directly on the site. Some german sites support this and it works out just fine.
It would allow people like me to read stories. I travel a lot and have no internet connection while traveling so I want to download the stories on my kindle. I am very busy and just don’t have the time to read the stories on my computer. I used Flagfic a lot and it would be sad if I were unable to continue reading some of the great stories this site has to offer.

      • Lisa

        10/23/2013 at 11:04 am

I agree with you 100% as I read from my Ipad. It should be the authors decision.

      • seila

        10/23/2013 at 4:08 pm

        That’s a nice idea, Armnorn.

Really though, just returning copy/paste would solve this whole mess. I would very much appreciate being able to read longer stories offline and in a format catered to offline reading without jumping hoops and breaking the terms of service.

But nonetheless, the option to have one’s stories downloaded is still a nice thought, especially if authors can choose to opt out.

      • bienfait

        10/23/2013 at 5:02 pm

@Armnorn – your suggestion is excellent, and if it’s technically feasible, I would very much like to see it adopted

  6. Cody

    10/22/2013 at 11:16 pm

I just really hope to have the highlight feature back as an optional feature for the authors. I hate losing my place when I am interrupted from a long chapter.

  7. knotothedrk

    10/22/2013 at 11:20 pm

personally… they should allow flagfic…though, in saying that, they’ve taken away other modes for reading enjoyment so they’ll likely keep that off… in my opinion, if they’re going to take these things away, they’ve got to give us a means to read…

An app or something like that that would download a particular amount of stories for a time…that would be nice…

    • Cody

      10/22/2013 at 11:29 pm

I agree. They could have the app hold the fic(s) for two weeks on a ereader and then remove the fic from the cache. I’d pay for something like that just to be able to read some of my favs.

      • knotothedrk

        10/23/2013 at 2:34 pm

They should offer it for free, since they won’t allow the use of other things right now…throw us a bone someplace, since we need to actually be able to read/listen to the words…in order to enjoy fan fiction.

    • Trudes193

      10/23/2013 at 12:08 am

I agree with you, and bienfait. There needs to be some kind of replacement for copy and paste, just so people who needs this to read stories can enjoy their favourite stories. I also agree with the Guest above, who also makes a valid point for people who want to read at their own leisure.

    • Happy

      10/23/2013 at 12:10 am

Obviously, people are expecting too much. does exactly what it set out to do – host fanfiction. They don’t owe you anymore than that, but everyone here has a haughty sense of entitlement.

I hope they continue to block any sites they are not associated with.

      • knotothedrk

        10/23/2013 at 12:55 am

it’s not expecting to much to help those of us read, if we need other means in order to enjoy the site…

      • Trudes193

        10/23/2013 at 1:24 am

Exactly by denying people cut and paste, you are denying disabled people from enjoying reading stories. Which to me is kind of like discrimination, and therefore is not right, and we have a right to complain.

      • birdymain

        10/23/2013 at 1:56 am

No one here has a “haughty sense of entitlement”

There are legit reasons for all the complaints posted about flagfic and highlighting.

Furthermore, the whole point of the blog comments is to ask questions, suggest changes, point out badly thought out ideas, etc.

You have a right to your opinions just like everyone else who posts. You shouldn’t be insulting people over differences of opinions.

      • Belen09

        10/23/2013 at 4:06 am

There is no ‘kind of like it’ about it; it is discrimination! I’m tired of mincing words . . . It’s that kind of nonsense that leads to the ‘averaging’ of everything – if you are ‘different’ then you marginalized . . .

        10/23/2013 at 4:22 am

    • xraiderv1

      10/23/2013 at 3:34 am

I make it a practice to ask permission to use flag to get stories for reading on my nook color e-reader, and I respect the authors’ decisions either way. if an author says no? then thats it, and i thank them for their time, if they say yes? cool beans, and I thank them for their time.

  8. birdymain

    10/23/2013 at 2:09 am

Oh another suggestion. Making the black\white background in stories available for the rest of the site. I use the black background on stories because it’s better for my eyes, when I switch to looking for more stories I’m blinded by (lol) light.

    • knotothedrk

      10/23/2013 at 2:52 am

even better…let us pick the colors we would like…give us a color palette so we can change it… if you won’t let us highlight, at least throw us a bone by giving us a few ways to get around it… also, maybe make a list of VI programs for computers that you will support…or allowing us to request what programs we would like supported…

  9. HorusTheAvenger

    10/23/2013 at 2:14 am

Ah so that was the reason for slowdown.

In case the first request was missed: would greatly appreciate a change in the FFN forum settings so forum moderators have permission to change thread titles. Currently it is restricted to only forum administrators, which is problematic at times. Thank you.

so,the un-copy/paste is going to be permanent or what? disappointed.

  12. demarisdreams

    10/23/2013 at 8:52 am

OK, so, I just wanted to pick-up on something that was said by @Guest and @ Bienfait. There is nothing parasitic, sneaky or underhand about what Flag does. It takes a copy of a story URL and creates a PDF which includes an author’s name, the date a story is first published online (helping with any possible copyright issue at a later date) and where the story has been taken from i.e. FFN. Now that makes it much more difficult for someone to steal/plagiarise a story that just copy-paste onto a word doc which doesn’t include ANY of the above….JS.

    • Lisa

      10/23/2013 at 11:05 am

Yes I agree with you too.

    • Ballroom

      10/23/2013 at 1:01 pm

But the authors were not notified that their stories were subjected to this when they signed up for ffnet. Flagfic does not have the authors’ permission. Period. You can argue about this all you want, but it still won’t give Flagfic that authority. I understand why some people are uncomfortable about it and you’re not helping ease that discomfort. Your hostility is adding to it.

      • demarisdreams

        10/23/2013 at 7:44 pm

I’m by no means being ‘hostile’. How ridiculous, who get hostile over Fanfiction! Don’t make me laugh!!!! I’m just saying the flag doesn’t act any different from copy/paste, in fact it is a better option if an author safeguards is the issue we’re discussing. And with the internet every and any safe guard that get put up if a person wants to find a way around it and you know how to code, you can…including copying/pasting, right now.

    • bienfait

      10/23/2013 at 3:33 pm

@demarisdreams – my main concern is that this site, which I have *never* been aware of until someone complained about it being blocked, may or may not have been siphoning off my work without me being aware of it.

If they had any respect whatsoever for authors, they would require the writer’s okay before they went ahead and took it.

From my point of view, that makes them parasites.

I repeat, I have no objection to readers copying and pasting my stories for their personal use, and if and when it becomes available I will certainly enable the feature. But I didn’t sign on to be exploited by other sites about which I know nothing.

If they had any moral or corporate decency, they would at least ensure that writers are aware of their existence before they start hoovering up stories.

      • Vicky (@Andromakhe)

        10/23/2013 at 9:09 pm

Yes! To almost all of it. I will likely still disable copying on my fics whenever I can choose to. But everything else you said, dead on. I would also like to add it’s not just the third-party sites/apps that have ticked me off. It’s the fact people may or may not have been archiving my fics without asking me first. Yes, the fics are derivative, but the story still belongs to me. Disrespect and lack of consideration is right.

      • yemi hikari

        10/24/2013 at 4:35 am

They also don’t have permission from the site admins either and it is in no way affiliated with any of the sites it downloads from.

  13. Emily

    10/23/2013 at 9:44 am

are we allowed to copy and paste now?

    • Lisa

      10/23/2013 at 9:48 am

Hi, not sure on that. I would assume no if they do not want you coping fics thru flagfic. It sucks but that is Fanfictions right as they own the site. I just try to find my favorite stories elsewhere to download to my ipad thru flagfic.

  14. Genesis

    10/23/2013 at 10:09 am

Total change of subject, but does anyone know if there’s any way on to find out how many people have favorited/followed you as an author? I know how to access the stats for stories, but I’ve yet to find anything for authors. Am I missing something, or is that function not possible yet?

  15. konarciq

    10/23/2013 at 12:17 pm

    Yes, that info is available.

Log in to your account. All the way at the bottom of that list of links on the left of the page, you’ll find one labelled “Traffic Stats”. Click on it, and you get the choice of six options. Choose the bottom one: “Legacy User Stats”. That’ll give you the information you’re looking for!

For all you complaining about the no-copy/paste thing, view your story in your web browser, depending on which browser you use (Chrome:) click the menu icon, then click ‘Save page as’. this will save the current page onto your computer, INCLUDING the chapter contents, then you can copy your story onto your phone. (If you have an apple device, since they have no way of transferring non-‘media’ files onto the device, I reccomend uploading your saved pages to Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive e.t.c. where there is an app that you can get on your device.)

    • walkman00

      10/23/2013 at 3:18 pm

Forgot to mention: this will only download the current chapter

Only thing that i suppose can be further improved with email format is space between Ch and number.
