DocX and Forum Spams

30 Oct

We have resolved an issue with some DocX conversion and added extra protection against a new wave of commercial spams targeting some forums.

  • Fixed  DocX conversion resulting in some docs missing proper word spacing after submission.
  • (Spam Prevention) Forum topics headers will now strip out all urls.
  • (Spam Prevention) Forum new topic creation is now disabled for new users registered within the past 7 days. New users are still able to reply to forum topics.
  • Fixed discrepancy between the visual look of some member profiles between the desktop and mobile site.

I depend on DocX for the beta reads I do. Appreciate the effort.

While I’m loving all these updates and dedication you’re showing to the site, I can help but feel the topic of logged Abuse reports, troll fics, and other problem submissions seem to be pushed to the way side.

So I’m not the only one who’s noticed the slow momentum of abuse reports being taken care of.. Good. I was starting to think I was going nuts.

Thank you for this, but I’m still not sure what to do about forums in the incorrect language. Can you please help?

Off topic, but all the stories are appearing with “align center”.

I think the source of the problem is the ‘div’ tag, just before the story text, with these parameters: role=’main’ aria-label=’story content’ class=’storytextp’ id=’storytextp’ align=center style=’padding:0 0.5em 0 0.5em;’

I am using Firefox on OSX.

You need to upgrade your firefox to the latest version. The one you are using is very much out-dated.

I was using Firefox 24, still having problems with 25 which says its up to date.
        OSX 10.9.

This morning (at home) it was ok. This afternoon (visiting a friend) on a different ISP (Rogers) its centered.

Safari is ok and has that align center, so I was mistaken on that.

Then it’s your friend’s computer’s browser that needs updating.

Not the ones I’ve seen on Fiction Press. Are you on ffn?

Cheers for the updates – forum spam protections are really good. It’s irritating when a forum is besieged by spam.

On this blog, I’m having trouble getting out of moderation. Hoping to once more have freedom to comment here under this username!

Thanks for pulling the above post out of moderation purgatory!

I wasn’t around when the nocopy feature came in, but it’s very inconvenient. I’m aware of the ways to get around it, but it makes a lot of users’ experience less pleasant – affecting many more than it can possibly protect.

As a reviewer, I like to pull lines out of the story to comment on them individually, as a detailed reviewer who’s trying to write helpful, longer reviews. Nocopy stops that. If people can’t pull quotes out, they find it harder to review – and also, hard to stop plagiarism by reporting quotes from the story that are plagiarised!

Additionally, as other have pointed out, the accessibility issues are huge for those who use the site using different technologies.

Just the other day I needed to use a quote from a story I critiqued. Wasn’t pleased about not being able to copy it. It’s a major pain. There are also a few stories that are hard for me to read because the writers use walls of text. I honestly didn’t realize until after the ability to copy was removed that I actually used the highlight feature to break these paragraphs up or highlight odd sentences.

Gosh seriously, I’ve been travelling so only been reading on my tablet and didn’t notice til I got back a few days ago since copying works fine on my preferred mobile browser. Definitely panicked the first time I tried to highlight something and nothing was happening. I don’t have anything to add that hasn’t been said but I really hope that if this is something that’s going to stick around it’s something that authors have to enable instead of disable.

The only thing I don’t like is now in the middle of the stories, I have blue lettered hyperlinks…it really is annoying for me, and they take me off site, making my firewall try and stop me from opening each fan fiction, it is irritating a good bit.

You have 3rd party modules installed on your browser that is modifying your browser behavior. You need to reinstall your browser and/or remove all browser extensions.

It’s a non-malicious virus that gets installed on to your computer every once in a blue moon. Just go to your computer programs and look up most recently installed. If it’s not anything that you’ve manually installed or had updated, then it’s that program you should remove. You should also remove it from your browser add-ons.
