Crossover Search Option

11 Nov

Introducing new “type” option on search page so users can exclude or find only crossover stories within search results. By default a search will return both regular and crossover story types.

  • New type option with search page for users to selectively include/exclude crossover story types.
  • Accessibility: improved browser compatibility for login captcha audio. Internet Explorer screen-reader users should upgrade to IE 9 or later.

what are ie screen reader users?

Screen readers ‘read’ the text on a page for people who are visually impaired. It seems that FFN is finally doing something to fix some of the things they broke with the no-copy ‘stuff’.

Would “fix” it if it was set to default highlighting on. Nothings actually broken, they set it that way.

Screen readers basically read the text back to you. And for someone who use more advanced programs use them to control their computer.

Isn’t me or does it feel the conversations that used to happen on this blog updates no longer happen? Was that the whole point of creating that comment screw up a few weeks ago?

That does seem to be the point.

Pick a topic~ I personally doubt your conspiracy-esque theory of the staff squelching conversation, but it does seem to have been an inadvertent side effect nonetheless. Since no other suitable subject matter seems to be floating around . . . How about the very reason that a simple revalidation would result in this quietness?

I could start with myself, I suppose. I value anonymity to such an extent that I pick a new name every time I sign or register to a new place — including revalidation in this case. Besides, I wouldn’t want to give the impression that my alias was actually my chosen pen name. That would be all sorts of complicated and unfair. And more than once prior to the cleaning of slates, I wondered if anyone had assumed that my blog name had been my ff or fp account name. Gee, that would’ve been pretty awkward.

So I stopped for a bit, contemplating things with a bit of distance, then wandered back to see the utter lack of stimulating writer fan nerd convo. A disappointing sight greeted me and simultaneously encouraged. Clean slates are nice. Thus I am doing what I generally do: hello new pseudonym. And no amount of persuasion shall convince me otherwise. My pen name and previous posting names are a secret =3

I’m just hoping that the moderating of comments is temporary and that after a certain point my comments won’t have to be monitored anymore. That in itself makes commenting cut back. D:

I miss the lively conversations, too. I was learning a lot, finding out about features and services here that I’d never known of, and expanding my POV.

I’d pretty much dropped out of the conversations and have been spending far less time on the site over frustration with how negatively some of the changes impacted my browsing and lack of response from the admins to concerns. The moderation was the last straw.

Would it be possible to exclude non-crossovers as well for those who are only looking for crossovers?

    • Ruri

      11/12/2013 at 9:24 am

      It’s already possible:

When searching, in type are the following options:
      -Only Crossovers
      -Exclude Crossovers

That’s what it does. The phrasing is a bit odd, granted, but it ‘excludes crossovers’ or ‘finds only/only finds crossovers’, depending on how you use it. Unless they just claimed to have it and don’t… *frown* I haven’t actually looked yet. But that’s what they said.

I misread the blog entry as being all or none for crossovers with the wording they used. 😛

well the new search options will certainly be useful, cant even begin to tell you how annoyed I’d get when searching specific crossover types only to get ones completely unrelated to my search query.

The new 4 numeric digit sign-in captcha is a little odd – at least every third time, the numbers are too large to fit into the little box where they are shown, meaning I have to request a new one. Yes, I know, but it’s annoying.

As for the little round button avatars, even though mine is well awesome in that form (it has circular features) it’s an odd innovation and doesn’t seem to serve any logical purpose. Most of them just look silly.

I completely agree with you about the circular avatar. We’re supposed to submit square images for avs, and they crop them into a circle? Mine looks terrible now, and I too fail to see the purpose of changing it.

I sometimes see that on my nintendo 3ds web browser, or IE on the xbox 360, just click the refresh captcha icon, no real way around that sadly.

Never seen a too big captcha myself. I’ll have to look out for it. XD

That’s why the circle avatars are driving me nuts. My avatar for the site that I am currently using fits nice and neatly into a circle but most aren’t created to fit in a circle format and my mind tells me the composition is off.

I like the new PM look. Rounded corners and avatars makes for a cleaner look. Though the avatars, most of them, do look silly round. I think its time for an image adjustment.

Also, I still don’t seen any logical reason why the Crossover, Forum, and Community amount for a fandom is gone while the story count remains besides the fandoms. Makes no sense.

I’m not too fond of the new changes you’ve made. More specifically the security captcha change. Have of the time I type in the correct numbers or letters and it still thinks that I typed it in wrong. I prefer the old log in. Plus I’d love to have the copy and paste option back.

The “Fanfiction” in the top left corner of the webpage (where it says “unleash your imagination” and has the Mobile option) is in blue? It’s really hard to see like that and frankly strains my eyesight. It should be turned back to white so it’s easier to see. I don’t know if it’s just me, but it’s there.

i kind of wish that you would make the search results in order of most popular story

    • bienfait

      11/12/2013 at 10:58 pm

@espadas – you can already filter stories by number of reviews, number of favorites and/or number of followers. That seems an adequate level of cover for “popularity”.

I’m not sure what else you are seeking. Number of visits doesn’t work simply because older stories tend to have higher stats in that regard – story which has been up for two years (or three, or ten), would be expected to have higher numbers than a story which only went up three months ago. Also, a story with many chapters will have higher numbers than one with only a dozen or less; this doesn’t mean it’s more popular, only that there are more individual chapter hits because of the number of chapters.

I think you should find that if “popularity” is your main criterion for choosing which stories to read, the favorites and followers filters should help you to find what you’re looking for.

On top this page hits are far easier to manipulate.

Just noticed, it has only started happening. Centralised in chapter titles at the top of the chapter etc. are being pushed over to ‘my’ left because of the chapter selection button. It needs fixing or some such. As it is it make centered titles or whatever look messy!

Now with this update I am no longer able to add stories to my community while using my LG Rumor Touch (when using the regular site) like I used to be able to. It would be nice if we had the option of adding a story to communities while using the mobile site

Not only are the avatars rounded but so are the messages in the PMs and sometimes it cuts off the last letter or so of the word and like the rounded avatars really serves no purpose and I don’t really see why that needed to change.
